• Is Private Bytes >> Working Set normal?

  OK, this may sound weird, but here goes. There are 2 computers, A (Pentium D) and B (Quad Core) with almost the same amount of RAM running Windows XP. If I run the same code on both computers, the allocated private bytes in A never goes down resulting in a crash later on. In B it looks like the private bytes is constantly deallocated and everything looks fine. In both computers, the working set is deallocated and allocated similarly. Could this be an issue with manifests or DLLs (system)? I'm clueless. Also, I compiled the executable on A and ran it on B and it worked. Note: I observed the utilized memory with Process Explorer. Question: During execution (where we have several allocations and deallocations) is it normal for the number of private bytes to be much bigger (1.5 GB vs 70 MB) than the working set?

• Best CPUs for speeding up compiling times of C++ w/ DistGCC

  I'm putting together a distributed build farm with DistGCC to speed up our teams compile times and just looking for thoughts on which processors to use in the hosts. Are we going to get a noticeable decrease in time using 8 cores vs. 4-hyperthreaded cores? Big difference in time between i7 and Xeon? etc, etc. Just need advice from people who've put together kick-a build clusters. We've got a majority of the normal things to speed up builds in place (pre-compiled headers, ccache, local gigabit connections between them, tons of ram, etc) so please just give advice on the best processor to use. And money is a factor, but anythings doable if the performance increase is noticeable. Thanks. Jay

• iPhone Simulator locks up immediately upon Build / Run

  I'm having a problem getting my MacBook set up to build iPhone *apps* in xCode. The iPhone Simulator locks up and shows the "spinning circle" busy icon. I've tried everything I can think of, including resetting the simulator tried all of the different hardware options tried the two debug build choices in xCode. uninstalling the SDK and completely reinstalling I downloaded the SDK today - "xcode_3.2.2_and_iphone_sdk_3.2_final" I'm just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard (10.6.3). I've run all the software updates. xCode version says 3.2.2 (1650) If it matters, my MacBook is 3-4 years old, 13 inch, dual 2.16 ghz intel cores, 2 gig RAM. I've never had a single problem with it. I would be so grateful if anyone can help me thanks so much,

• In a multithreaded app, would a multi-core or multiprocessor arrangement be better?

  I've read a lot on this topic already both here (e.g., stackoverflow.com/questions/1713554/threads-processes-vs-multithreading-multi-core-multiprocessor-how-they-are or http://stackoverflow.com/questions/680684/multi-cpu-multi-core-and-hyper-thread) and elsewhere (e.g., ixbtlabs.com/articles2/cpu/rmmt-l2-cache.html or software.intel.com/en-us/articles/multi-core-introduction/), but I still am not sure about a couple things that seem very straightforward. So I thought I'd just ask. (1) Is a multi-core processor in which each core has dedicated cache effectively the same as a multiprocessor system (balanced of course for processor speed, cache size, and so on)? (2) Let's say I have some images to analyze (i.e., computer vision), and I have these images loaded into RAM. My app spawns a thread for each image that needs to be analyzed. Will this app on a shared cache multi-core processor run slower than on a dedicated cache multi-core processor, and would the latter run at the same speed as on an equivalent single-core multiprocessor machine? Last friday we installed some windows updates. After the reboot tomcat doesn't start anymore, with error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap We reduced the parameter -Xmx1024m to -Xmx768m and now tomcat starts. • learning the Lower levels of computing

  I am a software developer with four years experience in .Net development, I always like to keep up to date with the latest technologies (.net related normally) being released and love learning them. I didn't however go to university and learnt all I know through helpful colleagues, .Net courses, the internet and good old books. I feel that I am a good developer, but without learning the lower levels of a computer as you would in the first year of a computer related Uni course, I get lost when talking to people about a lot of more technical lower level computing. Is there a book(s) that anyone could recommend, that would cover the lower levels of what is going on when I click "Run" in Visual Studio? I feel out of my depth when my boss says to me "Thats running in the CPU cache" or "you're limited by disk reads there", and would like to feel more confident when talking about how the hardware talks to each other (CPU to RAM etc). Apologise if thats a vague question, or has been asked before (i did check and couldn't find anything on here that answers my question).

• iOS Efficiency File Saving Efficiency

  I was working on my iOS app and my goal is to save a file that I am receiving from the internet bit by bit. My current setup is that I have a NSMutableData object and I add a bit of data to it as I receive my file. After the last "packet" is received, I write the NSData to a file and the process is complete. I'm kind of worried that this isn't the ideal way to do it because of the limitations of RAM in a mobile device and it would be problematic to receive large files. My next thought was to implement a NSFileHandle so that as the file arrives, it would be saved to the disk, rather than the virtual memory. In terms of speed and efficiency, which method do you think will work decently on an iOS device. I am currently using the first, NSMutableData approach. Is it worth changing my app to use the NSFileHandle? Thanks in advance, Guvvy

• McAfee Virus Scan and Oracle RAC

  Hi, We're experiencing a strange problem with Oracle RAC and McAfee anti-virus. As part of the installation of the Oracle RAC we disable anti virus as directed. We have had our RAC running fine, but when we came to re-enable the AV and reboot we got the BSOD. Abnormal Program Termination (BugCheck, STOP: 0x00000035 (0x8E984678, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS Following the standard process of raising this problem with Microsoft they identify the problem and also a fix. Microsoft talk about too many file filter drivers being present and pushing the DFS upper limit beyond the default size. Upping this value, as per msdn, has no impact. We're able to recover from this BSOD by disabling AV. We don't have the problem if we run the AV service manually whilst the system is up. However, if we make the service automatic we fail to boot.   I'm having problems installing development machine for Sharepoint (Foundation) 2010. This is what I did so far on the same machine: Installed a clean Windows 7 x64 with 4GB of RAM without being part of any domain. Just a simple standalone machine. Enabled IIS related features as described here except IIS6 related ones (two of them) Installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Development Edition (DB Engine and Writer being enabled but not SQL Agent) Installed Visual Studio 2010 Premium Started installing Sharepoint Foundation 2010 with first extracting files, changing config to enable Windows 7 installation and then installed it as Server Farm (then Complete) to avoid installing SQL Express. Created a separate SPF_CONFIG local user with Logon on as a service right. Opened SPF Management Shell and run New-SPConfigurationDatabase so I am able to use a non-domain username (SPF_CONFIG that I created in the previous step) But all I get is this: The outcome after this error is: Database Sharepoint2010Config is created User SPF_CONFIG is added to SQL Server and attached to this newly created database as dbowner and checking SQL server security logins this user has following rights: dbcreator securityadmin public

• Is it possible to tell IIS 7 to process the request queue in parallel?

  Currently we are developing an ASMX, ASP 2.0, IIS 7 web service that does some calculations (and return a dynamically generated document) and will take approx. 60 seconds to run. Since whe have a big machine with multiple cores and lots of RAM, I expected that IIS tries its best to route the requests that arrive in its requests queue to all available threads of the app pool's thread pool. But we experience quiet the opposite: When we issue requests to the ASMX web service URL from multiple different clients, the IIS seems to serially process these requests. I.e. request 1 arrives, is being processed, then request 2 is being processed, then request 3, etc. Question: Is it possible (without changing the C# code of the web service) to configure IIS to process requests in parallel, if enough threads are available? If yes: how should I do it? It no: any workarounds/tips? Thanks Uwe

  Hi, I install minix3 on vmware using installation CD i make using .iso image which is available @minix3 I make 2GB Harddisk, 512MB RAM on VMware, and installed step-by-step. It got installed and working fine. But i wana install 'packman' which is X window system. I'm not able to install it. It asks for installation CD, its still there and its detected also, but i couldn't proceed. Have any1 tried installing 'packman' i.e X window system on minix3. Please guide me. :)

  I'm currently having following error message when executing a .sql file with about 26MB on SQL Server 2005: Msg 701, Level 17, State 123 There is insufficient system memory to run this query. I'm working with 4GB RAM, 64Bit Windows 7 Ultimate, Core2Duo T6400(2GHz)... Is there a way to execute it without receiving this message (maybe force SQL Server to use swap file?) or a way to execute it in parts (like 100 queries a time)... The file is basically a CREATE TABLE followed by thousads of INSERT queries and I have a lot of those (converted .DBF files to SQL queries using ABC DBF Converter) Any idea will be very appreciated!

• Faster projected-norm (quadratic-form, metric-matrix...) style computations

  I need to perform lots of evaluations of the form X(:,i)' * A * X(:,i) i = 1...n where X(:,i) is a vector and A is a symmetric matrix. Ostensibly, I can either do this in a loop for i=1:n z(i) = X(:,i)' * A * X(:,i) end which is slow, or vectorise it as z = diag(X' * A * X) which wastes RAM unacceptably when X has a lot of columns. Currently I am compromising on Y = A * X for i=1:n z(i) = Y(:,i)' * X(:,i) end which is a little faster/lighter but still seems unsatisfactory. I was hoping there might be some matlab/scilab idiom or trick to achieve this result more efficiently?

• Visual Studio 2008 freezing when editing aspx/master pages

  Visual Studio freezes up continually when I'm editing master pages or aspx files. Here's what I've tried that have not helped: restarting VS only working with few files open at a time Disabled all addins (resharper etc.) deleted .suo and .user files changed default editor from Web Form Editor and Master Page Editor to HTML Editor installed SP1 I don't have tons of files - 3 Master pages and maybe 30 aspx files. It is a asp.net mvc project. All I have to do to get VS to freeze is type a little text or even just paste. The freezing lasts a good 5-10 seconds. My machine has 4GB of RAM and fast disks. Could it have anything to do with asp.net mvc? Would the amount and size of other projects in the solution affect the editor?

• how to optimize illustrator artwork in flash?

  I'm working on a flash project that incorporates a lot of artwork done in Illustrator CS4. I've been copy-pasting directly from Illustrator into Flash, and I add some animations as well. Final file is going to be a one single swf file which will be a part of UI for an application and .net will be the core for this. But now flash becomes unusable slow to respond for actions. My machine is a fast i7 with 6gb of RAM, so I don't think that's the issue. We are going to use this file with dual core atom processors. Does anyone have ideas for alternative importing techniques, optimizations within illustrator, anything at all that will make this more manageable? Thanks

• Situations to prefer Apache Lucene over Solr?

Even if I embed a search-functionality in my Java application I could use SolrJ to avoid the HTTP trade-off when using Solr. So, when would you recommend to use "pure-Lucene"? Does it have a better performance or requires less RAM? Is it better unit-testable? PS: I am aware of this question.

• Java program strange behavior, how to fix it ?

  My notebook has Intel CPU, running Windows Vista. My program looks like this : public class Tool_Lib_Simple { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("123"); } } When I run it, I expect to see : "123", but the output was : "Hi NM : How are you NM ?" which was the old output from two days ago before I changed my program. If I copy this program into another project in Netbean 6.7, it will run correctly and output "123", and if I change the program name from "Tool_Lib_Simple" to something else, it will also output "123", but just not under the name of "Tool_Lib_Simple" in the current project's src directory, I've deleted the "build" directory and did re-compile, re-build, it still gives me "Hi NM : How are you NM ?" as a result, seems to me the old version of my program is saved in the hard drive or ram and got stuck there, I've programmed many years, hardly ever encounter this kind of problem, how to fix this ? • Light-weight client/server DB?

I like the simplicity of SQLite, but by design, it doesn't support concurrent access. The apps I write don't have heavy needs, so I'd like to avoid heavier solutions like MySQL that are more difficult to deploy (remote customers with usually no computer personnel). Does someone know of a good solution that would offer the following features? Client available for VB.Net applications The server itself doesn't have to be a .Net application. Actually, I'd rather a bare-metal server so that it can run even on embedded Linux hosts with less RAM/CPU than regular PC's Easy install: the client part should either be statically linked inside the client application or be available as a single DLL, and the server should just be a single EXE listening for queries, à la Fossil (http://www.fossil-scm.org) clients can locate the server on the LAN by broadcasting data picked up by the server, so users don't have to write down the IP address and paste it into each client open-source, or moderately priced closed-source Thank you.

• LNK1106 with big binary resource

  I have a rather huge .dat-file (896MB) included as a BIN resource in my project. Now I get a LNK1106 link error ("fatal error LNK1106: invalid file or disk full: cannot seek to 0x382A3920".) I use Visual Studio 2005 under Windows XP, and have tried on a 4GB RAM machine with high Virtual Memory settings and lots of disk space. I have tried a number of different optimization flags, but to no avail. Does anyone have a clue? EDIT: I have narrowed it down to a specific size of the compiled resource. If the .res file is 544078588 bytes (about 518.9MB) or larger, the error occurs. If it is smaller it works just fine. Still no solution, though...

• Virtualizing WindowsXP on Linux Fedora 12 for Photoshop....

  I am running a Linux server from 2000, I have Fedora12 installed as the OS. I know you can virtualize Windows XP on the system to be able to run Windows programs, but the problem is I My server has only one 1333Mhz Pentium 3 processor and 1G of Ram. granted this is a pretty kick ass computer for the day, but lacking the processor I'm afraid that I will not be able to run Windows virtualization to support Photoshop CS3. Is there any program out there that runs similar to Photoshop, like windows Digital Image suite 10, that will run smoothly in my Linux Fedora 12 environment? or can I virtualize windows and run the Windows digital image suite 10, without slowing or corrupting my system?

• Why does my server hang when I call a page over files_get_content?

  I am trying to get content from a wordpress installation on a subdomain of my server. I tried that with file_get_content and also with Zend_Http_Client. $client = new Zend_Http_Client(Zend_Registry::get('CONFIG')->static->$name->$lang); $content = $client->request()->getBody(); As long as I run in on my localhost, it works fine. As soon as it runs on the same server as the subdomain, it hangs forever (timeout). • What operating systems available for an 8-bit microprocessor?

  It does not need to be a full fledged OS, but at least have multitasking capabilities (i.e. a scheduler). Please mention what processor architecture it works on. This is a survey, so exact capabilities are not really important. Think of this as being a place to look at for possibilities when your next 8-bit embedded project comes up... I realize that most 8-bit micro do not require an OS, but just as a counter-example, Rabbit Semiconductor offers the RCM3710 processor module with 4 serial ports, a 10-BaseT ethernet port, 512K RAM and 512K Flash. All that for $39. All based around an 8-bit Z80 core. 8-bit does NOT necessarily mean extreme resource constraint.

• Understanding memory and cpu speed

  Firstly, I am working on a windows xp 64 machine with 4gb ram and 2.29 ghz x4 I am indexing 220,000 lines of text that are more or less the same length. These are divided into 15 equally sized files. File 1/15 takes 1 minute to index. As the script indexes more files, it seems to take much longer with file 15/15 taking 40 minutes. My understanding is that the more I put in memory, the faster the script is. The dictionary is indexed in a hash, so fetch operations should be O(1). I am not sure where the script would be hanging the CPU. I have the script here.
