• How to do pragmatic high-level/meta-programming?

  Imagine you have implemented the creation of a nice path-based star shape in Lisp. Then you discover Processing and you re-implement the whole code, because Processing/Java/Java2D is different. Then you want to tinker with libcinder, so you port your code to C++/Cairo. You are (re)writing a lot of boiler plate code, while the actual requirement "create a star shape" (or "create a path, moveto x y, lineto x y") has not changed. What are the options to encapsulate those implementation details? Some sort of pragmatic meta-programming? Maybe an expert system? How would you define your core business logic as language-independent as possible?

• Is it safe to convert Windows file paths to Unix file paths with a simple replace?

  So for example say I had it so that all of my files will be transferred from a windows machine to a unix machine as such: C:\test\myFile.txt to {somewhere}/test/myFile.txt (drive letter is irrelevant at this point). Currently, our utility library that we wrote ourselves provides a method that does a simple replace of all back slashes with forward slashes: public String normalizePath(String path) { return path.replaceAll("\\", "/"); } Slashes are reserved and cannot be part of a file name, so the directory structure should be preserved. However, I'm not sure if there are other complications between windows and unix paths that I may need to worry about (eg: non-ascii names, etc)

• Defining the track in a 2D racing game

  I am designing a top-down racing game using canvas (html5) which takes a lot of inspiration from Micro Machines. In MM, cars can move off the track, but they are reset/destroyed if they go too far. My maths knowledge isn't great, so I'm finding it hard to separate 3D/complex concepts from those which are directly relevant to my situation. For example, I have seen "splines" mentioned, is this something I should read up on or is that overkill for a 2D game? Could I use a single path which defines the centre of the track and check a car's distance from this line? A second path might be required as a "racing line" for AI. Any advice on methods/techniques/terms to read up on would be greatly appreciated.

My first app had this code: var express = require('express') , routes = require('./routes') , user = require('./routes/user') , http = require('http') , path = require('path'); Reading through the mongoose tutorial gives me this: var mongoose = require('mongoose') , db = mongoose.createConnection('localhost', 'test'); On strict mode, JSHint gives me app.js: line 6, col 32, Bad line breaking before ','. Which shows that I'm not the only one out there who's bugged by this syntax. Is there any reason to declare vars this way instead of adding the comma at the end of the line?

• Enemy Spawning method in a Top-Down Shooter

  I'm working on a top-down shooter akin to DoDonPachi, Ikaruga, etc. The camera movement through the world is handled automatically with the player able to move inside of the camera's visible region. Along the way, enemies are scripted to spawn at particular points along the path. While this sounds straightforward, I could see two ways to define these points: Camera's position: 'trigger' spawning as the camera passes by the points Time along path: "30 seconds in, spawn 2 enemies" In both cases, the camera-relative positions would be defined as well as the behavior of the enemy. The way I see it, the way you define these points will directly affect how the 'level editor', or what have you, will work. Would there be any benefits of one approach over the other?

• What undergraduate course to choose for a mature programmer returning to study

  I have been developing applications (mostly web-based) for almost 10 years now and have learnt pretty much everything I know through experience (and the internet!). I wouldn't call myself an advanced programmer, but I am quite proficient in several languages (C#, Javascript, Ruby, HTML/CSS etc) and spend a quite a bit of time working on personal projects and reading countless books & articles. I am looking to emigrate to Canada, hopefully Vancouver (im from the UK) and one way would be on a student visa, if I was going to be studying for a minimum of 2 years. Having never been to university or achieved anything higher than A-Levels I am quite tempted by this path. The thought of learning is more exciting to me now than it was 10 years ago! What would be people recommend as a good undergraduate course to take that would complement this career path? Would Math be beneficial, if so which area of Math? TL;DR What undergraduate course/area of study would complement 10 years of (mostly web-based) programming experience?

When I just return however, it returns CDC and works, however, exiting the function as return is meant to do. I am wondering how I can improve my code here to (1) make it work, (2) why my logic was faulty. For example, I understand that it generates say [DC], but I am confused as to how to go around that. perhaps index the value returned?

When the user press right on the keyboard, the background is moved to the right. If the path is always horizontal, this is simple to do (incrementation/decrementation of the x-coordinate). But suppose that the path is instead a polygonal chain. My questions are: How do you move the background? How do you move the background if the game objects are managed with a physics engine like box2D?

It was interesting to hear definite patterns emerging from those conversations: “BPM is a journey”, “experiences to share”, “our organization now understands what BPM is”, and my favorite (with some caveats): “BPM is like wine tasting, once you start, you want to try more”. These customers have started their journey, climbed up the learning curve, and reached a vantage point that allows them to see their next BPM destination. They see the next few processes they are going to tackle and improve with BPM. These processes/destinations target both horizontal processes where BPM replaces or coordinates manual activities, and critical industry processes that the company needs to improve to compete and deliver increasing value. Each new destination generates value, allowing the organization to reduce the cost of manual processes that were not supported by apps/custom development, and increase efficiency of end-to-end processes partially covered by apps/custom dev. The question we wanted to answer is how to help organizations experience deeper success with BPM, by increasing their awareness of the potential for reaching new targets, and equipping them with the right tools. We decided that we needed to identify destinations, and plot routes to show the fastest path to those destinations. In the end we want to enable customers to reach “Process Excellence”: continuously set new targets and consistently and efficiently reach them. The result is Oracle Process Accelerators (PA), solutions built using the rich functionality in Oracle BPM Suite. PAs offers a rapidly expanding list of exciting destinations. Some facts about my system: $ which python /usr/local/bin/python When I type python in terminal I get the following $ python Python 2.7.2 (default, Dec 19 2011, 11:12:13) [GCC 4.4.3] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.   I have an environment variable that I've set in ~/.profile with the following line: export APPDIR=/path/to/dir When I log in and load up a terminal, I can verify that the variable is set: $ printenv APPDIR /path/to/dir I'm trying to access this variable from within a Qt application: QString appdir = getenv("APPDIR"); QTWARNING("dir: |" + appdir + "|"); The warning window that pops up shows me: dir: || What is going on here? Am I misunderstanding about how environment variables work in Ubuntu? This is with a C++/Qt App on Ubuntu 11.10 x86.

  My goal is to be able to create online apps and dynamic, database driven websites. For instance, if in the future I get the idea for the next Digg or Facebook, I want to be able to code it myself. To arrive there I think I have basically two paths: Path 1 Start at a basic level, learning C, then C++ for OOP, then algorithms and data structures, with the goal of getting a solid grasp of computer programming. Only then move to PHP/MySQL/HTTP and start working on practical programming projects. Path 2 Start directly with PHP/MySQL/HTTP and getting my hands dirty with practical projects right away. • Drawing flaming letters in 3d on OpenGL ES 2.0

  I am a bit confused about how to achieve this. What i want is to "draw with flames". I have achieved this with textures successfully, but now my concern is about doing this with particles to achieve the flaming effect. Am I supposed to have a Path in where i should add many particle emitters along the path that will "be emitting flames"? I understand the concept for 2d, but for 3d are the particles (that are quads) always supposed to be facing the user? Edit: Something else im worried about is the performance hit that will occur by having that many particle emitters, because there can be many letters and drawings at the same time. And each of these elements will have many particle emitters.

• Can we grant sudo to an already opened application?

  So, can we grant sudo to an already opened application ? I wish to first open an application as normal user and incase if i need root permissions on it i wish to grant su without restarting the application.. I tried opening an application and then type "sudo appname" in terminal, but that opens a new app window retaining normal user permissions on old app window. Say, i want to check and edit /etc/apt/sources.list . I open a filemanager and go to the path and click on sources.list which opens a text editor with that file in view. If i feel i need to edit that, then i want to grant sudo to that instance of text editor rather than opening a new root text editor and browsing the entire path.

Instead of being branded Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), these new credentials are now branded Oracle Certified Expert (OCE). One area where we use the Expert brand is for credentials where the technology is advanced or broader than the path based credential requires. Some are high-end add-on certifications, and others have significant additional technological breadth. In these cases, the Expert brand is an indication that someone is tested in more advanced or in-depth skills - beyond the traditional path-based certification. A few examples are RAC Expert for DBAs, or SQL Expert - also for DBAs. Because (1) all of the Java EE6 credentials require that candidates become certified first in Java SE6, and (2) many people earn more than one Java EE credential, we felt that the Expert branding would be more appropriate. • How do I migrate web files from a Plesk 8 installation (on a slaved HDD) to a Plesk 10.4.4 installation?

  Due to Plesk 8 being at End of Support our host setup a new installation of RHEL and Plesk 10 on a new hard drive. They then slaved the old drive to the new so that we could migrate all our files using SSH. I am having challenges correctly migrating the sub domain files. The path to subdomain root folder in Plesk 10.4.4 is confusing as I don't know where to copy the files to. The path to the files on the slaved drive is: "/mnt/old-drive/var/www/vhosts/domain_name.com/subdomains/SUBDOMAIN_NAME/", meanwhile on the new installation I have "/var/www/vhosts/SUBDOMAIN_NAME.domain_name.com". There is an httpdocs folder in the '/var/www/vhosts/domain_name' folder but none in the '/var/www/vhosts/SUBDOMAIN_NAME.domain_name.com' folder. Where do I copy my subdomain files to? Please help.

I've got a domain and a site... and no clue about the web (I'm OK with files and programs... ) I got a message from google that my site is a possible phishing site, with a link the the suspect page: http://www.mydomain.com/~phishers/Paypal/us/Confirm.php needless to say, I didn't put that up. Can someone point me to a good tutorial on what to do now? I'd like to figure out what happened so I can defend against it the next time around. How do I identify what kind of attach this is? Also, what is the tilde doing in the URL path? I couldn't find any path like this on my hosting account, so I'm not entirely sure how to delete it.

  I'm new to PHP in a professional context. I want a few macro thumb rules to keep me on the enlightened path. Here are a few I'm proposing to myself: no absolute paths in include|require(_once)? statements no .. dirname(foo), or other means of walking up in include|require(_once)? statements put libs on the include path, not in subdirectories You can see that all of this is focusing on managing dependencies, because that is the problem I've encountered thus far. What other thumb-rule solutions to macro level problems do you have?
