    Two excellent results of SOLID development ideology are - Legibility - Extensibility over the life of a project (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid_(object-oriented_design) Although SOLID is a set of language-agnostic design ideas, some languages inherently support these ideas better than others. Out-of-the-box or after various customizations, in your opinion which language is best-suited to be both easily readable and easy to extend functionality in? Some definitions to pre-empt biases and flamewars: Legibility: amount of thinking done to understand the code proportional to the amount of code: (amount_think-energy / amount_code) is fairly constant and as low as possible in the optimal case. Extensibility: Addition of X amount of functionality requires a change in code or code additions in proportion to X (amount_added_functionality / amount_added_code) is fairly constant and as high as possible in the optimal case. Supporting information and tutorials encouraged. Code snippets welcome.

  • how to add language support to android

    hello i hope someone put me on the right direction with my problem i want to work on supporting my language, specially the writing on android we use Arabic characters with little modification ( like parsi, urdu etc).. i was hoping android has fully supported Arabic , then i would make changes to work with my language. but even 2.2 dosn't support Arabic . it just show Arabic characters and it is not connected. that is "????? " is displayed "? ? ? ? ?". some individuals have made Arabic support on CyanogenMod ROM's for some HTC phones, but they would not tell how they made it. I'v got the android source code, i want to know where to start, where to make changes , what is the library that handle fonts , shaping engine etc .. ps : android.com and other android related google groups are blocked in my country.

  • getTitle() on Doctrine i18n with non-default language

    Hi, I'm having a problem getting the title of an object from my i18n object in Doctrine 1.1.6 / Symfony 1.2 I have the following Doctrine Table method: public function getPlace($place_id, $lang=''){ $q = Doctrine::getTable('Place') ->createQuery('p'); if($lang != '') $q = $q->leftJoin('p.Translation ptr') ->addWhere('ptr.lang = ?', $lang); return $q->addWhere('p.id = ?', $place_id) ->fetchOne(); } Then on the view file if I do $place-getTitle(), it prints the title correctly in the language I wanted. However, if I do $place-getTitle() on an action it returns nothing, I have to do $place-Translation['es']-title to get the title in Spanish. If I work with the default language ('en') $place-getTitle() works. Any idea on how to make $place-getTitle() to work always? thanks!

  • go programming POST FormValue can't be printed

    Before I being a bit of background, I am very new to go programming language. I am running go on Win 7, latest go package installer for windows. I'm not good at coding but I do like some challenge of learning a new language. I wanted to start learn Erlang but found go very interesting based on the GO I/O videos in youtube. I'm having problem with capturing POST form values in GO. I spend three hours yesterday to get go to print a POST form value in the browser and failed miserably. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, can anyone point me to the right direction? I can easily do this in another language like C#, PHP, VB, ASP, Rails etc. I have search the entire interweb and haven't found a working sample. Below is my sample code.     A few years ago, I felt privileged to be involved in a mature open-source project where my salary was paid by a government research grant. As it turned out, I was ill-equipped for this three-month contract which included some very stressful network support in a medical setting and, to add to that, the project was poorly managed with poor lines of communication. My dream job had suddenly become a nightmare. Never, in my experience, though, did I learn as much about programming in as short a period of time. Psychologically, the only way through this episode in my life was for me to actively look for the good in things and focus on my love of programming.   • Programming tutorials for people with zero experience

    A friend of mine is interested in learning how to program computers, but she knows nothing about programming. I suggested that Python might be a good language to start with, but after some googling, I couldn't find any tutorials that covered both programming and Python in an adequate way. I don't want her to go through the tiresome "learn algorithms in pseudocode first" routine. Instead, I'd like a tutorial that will explain the basic ideas while working towards a real goal, e.g. a very simple console game. Does anyone know of any such tutorials? Do you think that I'm mistaken in how I'm handling this? Is Python a bad choice? I know that something like C, C++ or Java won't work - too many details will be very counterproductive. On the other hand, I think that Lisp might be too mathematical and abstract. Python, on the other hand, will let her even do something like coding primitive graphical games in a short period of time.

  • C++ USB Programming

    Hi, I am new to hardware programming(especially USB) so please bear with me and my questions. I am using C++ and I need to send/receive some data (a byte array) to/from a USB port on a microprocessor board. Now, I have done some serial port programming before and I know that for a serial port you have to open a port, setup, perform i/o and finally close the port. I am guessing to use a USB port, it is not as simple as what I mentioned above. I do know that I want to use Microsoft standard drivers and implement standard Windows IO commands to accomplish this, since I believe there are no drivers for the microprocessor board for me to interact with. If somebody can point me in the right direction as to the steps needed to "talk" to a USB port (open, setup, i/o) via standard Windows IO commands, I would truly and greatly appreciate it.   • Problems with dynamic programming

    I've got difficulties with understanding dynamic programming, so I decided to solve some problems. I know basic dynamic algorithms like longest common subsequence, knapsack problem, but I know them because I read them, but I can't come up with something on my own :-( For example we have subsequence of natural numbers. Every number we can take with plus or minus. At the end we take absolute value of this sum. For every subsequence find the lowest possible result. in1: 10 3 5 4; out1: 2 in2: 4 11 5 5 5; out2: 0 in3: 10 50 60 65 90 100; out3: 5 explanation for 3rd: 5 = |10+50+60+65-90-100| what it worse my friend told me that it is simple knapsack problem, but I can't see any knapsack here. Is dynamic programming something difficult or only I have big problems with it?

  • Proper programming procedure?

    I am creating a scoring application which is dependent upon what a user selects at the beginning menu. Example: If a user clicks 18, I want it to base itself off 18 holes of golf. If a user clicks 9, I want it to base itself off 9 holes of golf. Is it better to create a separate class for the code for 9 holes, and then another for 18 holes and then launch whichever depending on what the user selects? Or should I keep everything in 1 file and use a global variable to define different parameters? Still very new to android programming (or programming in general) so not sure of the proper "etiquette" if you will... Also what would be the pro's and con's of doing it either way? (If any) Thanks in advance!

Also I have some key bindings to open function declarations which I would like to use with all programming languages. How can this be achieved in gVim? As in, is there a way to maintain a configuration file for each programming language or something of that sort?

    I occasionally hear things about how SQL sucks and it's not a good language, but I never really hear much about alternatives to it. So, are other good languages that serve the same purpose (database access) and what makes them better than SQL? Are there any good databases that use this alternative language? EDIT: I'm familiar with SQL and use it all the time. I don't have a problem with it, I'm just interested in any alternatives that might exist, and why people like them better. I'm also not looking for alternative kinds of databases (the NoSQL movement), just different ways of accessing databases.

  • Resources for Win32 C/C++ programming

    I have experience in a variety of languages (Java, Perl, C#, PHP, javascript, ansi-C for microprocessors, Objective-C and others), with Win32 programming not being an area I've done a lot of work in. Now part of my job entails maintaining a large Win32 codebase that stretches back 15 years and includes everything from C written originally for Win95 to MFC to COM to 64-bit code for Win7 to C++ using Boost and so on. If there's a variation on how to do something it's in there. Are there any good Win32 C/C++ references that discuss both the proper way to do things today and give you a little sense of how things evolved? Something like this discussion of all the various boolean types, or how to approach the API monstrosity of simply copying a string. I don't see my career heading too far down this path, but I do like to understand what I'm working with and I think this is an important part of programming history. thanks, Eric

  • SSAS Reporting Services - Set specific language / translation

    Hi all, in the data warehouse there's a default language for the measures, and I added a translation for German captions. In a Visual Studio Report Server project, when creating a query with my German OS, the cube and its measures are displayed in German language. When dragging measures to the mdx query windows, the default measure name is used. That's what I want and what I expect, since when writing MDX queries I would like to use the default measure names. But when executing the query, the columns created for each measure is translated to German again. This resuls in having German columns names within my dataset, which I dont want. I'd like to have the english column names. I already tried to change the connection string to: Data Source=server;Initial Catalog=DataWarehouse;LocaleIdentifier=1033 But that doesn't help, I still see German translations. Anyone knows how to set a specific translation?

    Hi, I have a form with 2 textareas; the first one allows user to send HTML Code, the second allows to send CSS Code. I have to verify with a PHP function, if the language is correct. If the language is correct, for security, i have to check that there is not PHP code or SQL Injection or whatever. What do you think ? Is there a way to do that ? Where can I find this kind of function ? Is "HTML Purifier" http://htmlpurifier.org/ a good solution ?

  • Language neutral plugin architectures

    I am looking at extending an existing application through the use of a plugin architecture. The application id written in Delphi, but I want to be able to implement various plugins in whatever language is best of the job. Currently we have skills in Delphi, C# and Java, and would like to be able to implement a plugin in whatever language is required. Does anyone know of an example system that can be used to implement this ? I am assuming that I could standardise on a particular COM interface and anything that implements that interface could be a plugin. Does anyone have any pointers ? Thanks
