• How to script printer creation on a Windows Server 2008 R2 clustered print server?

  As per subject. I've found some ways of scripting printer creation on Windows print servers using WMI, but it looks like WMI doesn't support clustered print servers (or clustered servers at all). The scripts in C:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts are useless because, they are not cluster-aware and end up creating the printers on the active cluster node (just like using WMI). The only tool I found that was able to work on a clustered print server is printui.exe (shortcut for rundll32 printui.dll, PrintUIEntry), but it can't create TCP printing ports: it can only add printers if the port already exists. How can I completely script printer creation (including TCP printing ports!) on a clustered Windows Server 2008 R2 print server?

• How can I get the current OU with a PowerShell login script?

  I am setting up a Terminal Server 2008 which will be used by different client organisations, each with multiple individual user accounts. I would like each client organisation to have a drive mapped to \server\clients\ Their OU name is also their client name, so I would like to be able to find their current OU and then use it for the mapping command. The OUs are hierarchicals, so it is the bottom-most OU name I need. Example OU: Dedicated Clients\AjaxCorp Should get a drive mapped to \\server1\shares\AjaxCorp Any suggestions on how I can get the OU? I am sure it must be easy, I just haven't figured it out... I did find information about how to do this with VB script, but as it is a whole new environment I thought it would be nice to use PowerShell instead.

• Looking for Unix tool/script that, given an input path, will compress every batch of uncompressed 100MB text files into a single gzip file

  I have a dump of thousands of small text files (1-5MB) large, each containing lines of text. I need to "batch" them up, so that each batch is of a fixed size - say 100MB, and compress that batch. Now that batch could be: A single file that is just a 'cat' of the contents of the individual text files, or Just the individual text files themselves Caveats: unix split -b will not work here as I need to keep lines of text intact. Using the lines option is a bit complicated as there is a large variance in the number of bytes in each line. The files need not be a fixed size strictly, as long as it's within 5% of the requested size The lines are critical, and should not be lost: I need to confirm that the input made its way to output without loss - what rolling checksum (something like CRC32, BUT better/"stronger" in face of collisions) A script should do nicely, but this seems like a task someone has done before, and it would be nice to see some code (preferably python or ruby) that does atleast something similar.

• Script to run chown on all folders and setting the owner as the folder name minus the trailing /

  Some numpty ran chown -R username. in the /home folder on our webserver thinking he was in the desired folder. Needless to say the server is throwing a lot of wobbelys. We have over 200 websites and I don't want to chown them all individually so I'm trying to make a script that will change the owner of all the folders to the folder name, without the trailing /. This is all I have so far, once I can remove the / it will be fine, but I'd also like to check if the file contains a . in it, and if it doesn't then run the command, otherwise go to the next one. #!/bin/bash for f in * do test=$f; #manipluate the test variable chown -R $test $f done Any help would be great! • How can I check for a string match AND an empty file in the same if/then bash script statement?

  I'm writing a simple bash script to do the following: 1) Check two files (foo1 and foo2). 2) If foo1 is different from foo2 and foo1 NOT blank, send an email. 3) If foo1 is the same as foo2... or foo1 is blank... do nothing. The blank condition is what's confusing me. Here's what I've got to start with: diff --brief <(sort ./foo1) <(sort ./foo2) >/dev/null comp_value=$? if [ $comp_value -ne 0 ] then mail -s "Alert" [email protected] <./alertfoo fi Obviously this doesn't check for blank contents. Any thoughts on how to do that?

  I am working on a site http://tapasya.co.in where i just impemented mootools slideshow. But I noticed that menubar that i was using stopped working, it was supposed to drop horizontaly but it is not being displayed now. I have used jquery for it. Please see the source of the web page. Problem is, when they click tweet, it just reloads the twitter box, empty. I want it to load something new, like a "thank you, now fill in this email form" and show a mailchimp form.   I'm trying to put together a simple script that will scan my home directory with clamscan and give me a warning if any viruses were found. Check the logs' && touch ~/Desktop/ClamscanError find ~/.ClamScan/* -mtime +7 -exec rm {} \; However, I'm unsure about a couple of things: I'm always wary of using rm- as far as I can tell, the find command I've got should be deleting any log files that are more than a week old. I'm also not entirely sure how the return value testing works- I've got a manual that briefly covers bash, which says that the meaning of $? is "match one character", and I'm not entirely sure how that grabs the return value. Should I be using -eq or = for testing the return value? From what I can tell -eq tests strings and = tests numerals, but I'm not sure what the type of the return value is.

  I am running a dedicated server with multiple websites. I have created a global directory for common scripts for all websites, rather than repeating them in every website directory. If I change the CHOWN for Y website then X website will have the same error. I don't want to disable the safemode restriction. Is there a work around, so that this global dir will be accessible by all website. I am getting following error in my browser when I try to access global directory. Global directory is on same level as all other websites. Is this a good practice to enable safemode for websites?

• Never getting a JSON response when running server-side PHP proxy script but I do with others

  I'm on PHP 5.3.4 and Apache 2.2 btw So I'm using (or trying to use) Simple PHP Proxy (Simple PHP Proxy) I enter a URL at his example page at SPP Example Page and it works fine, I see the JSON response and all the headers. However, when I copy the exact URL, only changing the URL to now have localhost, I get both empty headers and no JSON. Assuming that the script on his site is the same I downloaded, could this be due to a multitude of things or a setting in Apache and/or the PHP ini? So for example: benalman.com/code/projects/php-simple-proxy/ba-simple-proxy.php?url=http://github.com/&full_headers=1&full_status=1 That will get me a ton of info back Now changing to localhost http://localhost/ba-simple-proxy.php?url=http://github.com/&full_headers=1&full_status=1 {"headers":[],"status":{"url":"https:\/\/github.com\/","content_type":"text\/html","http_code":301,"header_size":194,"request_size":182,"filetime":-1,"ssl_verify_result":0,"redirect_count":1,"total_time":0.094,"namelookup_time":0,"connect_time":0.047,"pretransfer_time":0,"size_upload":0,"size_download":185,"speed_download":1968,"speed_upload":0,"download_content_length":185,"upload_content_length":0,"starttransfer_time":0,"redirect_time":0.047,"certinfo":[]},"contents":null} I even went basic and just used some curl and of course, empty objects being returned other than false for my content and the url I set in my JSON. Any help is deeply appreciated or any ideas.

• Logging Remote Desktop to Servers via Logon Script or GPO or What?

  The objective here is to start a simple .NET application I've written which captures some environment variables (time, username, computername, etc) upon login. This .NET application subscribes to the Windows "User logout" event. Upon launch, the application captures the above variables, and creates a record in my database, upon logout (which I'm capturing) I update another field in the same record, with the logout time. The above is working exactly as I would like, when I launch the binary, it makes its initial log entry, then waits for the logout event and updates the same record. Restrictions, the .NET binary should be able to live on a share point (\server\share\myapp\v1) so I can update the application to (\server\share\myapp\v2) and simply update the GPO/Logon script. My initial thought was to use the \domaincontroller\sysvol\ directory to store the binary and then update all user accounts to include a call to my application. Can you see any flaws in this approach? My question is this: First, is there anything wrong with my idea above? Second, if so, what is the best way (through group policy or otherwise) to ensure this application launches whenever a session is started on a server?

• What's the safest way to kick off a root-level process via cgi on an Apache server?

  The problem: I have a script that runs periodically via a cron job as root, but I want to give people a way to kick it off asynchronously too, via a webpage. (The script will be written to ensure it doesn't run overlapping instances or such.) I don't need the users to log in or have an account, they simply click a button and if the script is ready to be run it'll run. The users may select arguments for the script (heavily filtered as inputs) but for simplicity we'll say they just have the button to choose to press. As a simple test, I've created a Python script in cgi-bin. chown-ing it to root:root and then applying "chmod ug+" to it didn't have the desired results: it still thinks it has the effective group of the web server account... from what I can tell this isn't allowed. I read that wrapping it with a compiled cgi program would do the job, so I created a C wrapper that calls my script (its permissions restored to normal) and gave the executable the root permissions and setuid bit. That worked... the script ran as if root ran it. My main question is, is this normal (the need for the binary wrapper to get the job done) and is this the secure way to do this? It's not world-facing but still, I'd like to learn best practices. More broadly, I often wonder why a compiled binary is more "trusted" than a script in practice? I'd think you'd trust a file that was human-readable over a cryptic binaryy. If an attacker can edit a file then you're already in trouble, more so if it's one you can't easily examine. In short, I'd expect it to be the other way 'round on that basis. Your thoughts?

• JQuery validation not working for checkbox group

  I'm having trouble getting JQuery validation to work with a set of checkboxes. I'm generating the checkboxes using an ASP.NET checkboxlist, and I've used JQuery to set the 'name' attribute to the same thing for each checkbox in the list. Here's the code that gets written to the browser. I'm setting the 'validate' attribute on the 1st checkbox to set the rule that at least one checkbox must be selected. The JQuery validation works for all other elements on the form, but not for the checkbox list. I'm trying to enable the JQuery validation whilst being as unobtrusive as possible, so that pages will still work even if JQuery is disabled.
