• How to allow simple file sharing on Windows Server 2008R2 through VPN

  We are a small, distributed company with a Windows Server 2008R2 installation. I would like to set up a way for our employees to connect securely to this server via VPN and then be able to map a network drive. I have gotten this to work somewhat by installing the Network Policy and Access Services Role on the server and using the default settings. I have also created a network share on the server. The problem is that our connectivity is sporadic (sometimes the service stops listening on the port or simply refuses to authorize correct credentials) and slow. I can always connect through VPN, but mapping is problematic. I would be grateful for the answer on how to accomplish this as well as some guidance on whether I am on the right track. • Windows screen resolution change: lengthen timeout

  Occasionally I need to change the screen resolution of the console of a Windows virtual machine using XenCenter. When you attempt this change, Windows will revert if you don't accept the changed resolution within 15 seconds of clicking 'apply.' (Normally, this is a good thing.) The problem is that if I have a slow connection between XenCenter and the Xen hypervisor, the virtual console display may not refresh quickly enough to allow me to respond within 15 seconds. As a result, I can't change the resolution, even though the new resolution is valid. Is there a way to increase the timeout before reverting to the original display resolution?

• How is it possible for SSD's drives to have such a good latency?

  First time i read some information about SSD's, i was surprised to learn they internally use NAND flash chips. This kind of memory is generally slow (low bandwidth) and have high latency while SSD's are just the opposite. But here is how it works : SSD drives increase their bandwidth by using several NAND flash chips in parallel. In other words, they do some data striping (aka RAID0) across several chips (done by the controller). What i don't understand is how SSD's drives have such a low latency, whereas they are using NAND chips? (or at least lot better than what a typical single NAND chip would do) EDIT: I think under-estimate NAND chip capabilities. USB drives, while powered by NAND's are mostly limited by USB protocol (which have a pretty high latency) and the USB controller. That explain their poor performance in some cases.

• Application runs with different speed for two different user logins on windows server

  We have a application in Windows Server that download data from SQL server and store in our local machine. Now the problem I have is my Windows Server has two logins and in one login the app runs real slow, like gets 1 row in a minute, and from another login it fetches 20 rows in a minute. We have this problem only for a last couple of days. What could have caused this? More details: SQL server:S QL server2008 Os: Windows server 2008 Access method: Remote connection. Application: Custom .Net application to get data Both accounts are limited rights accounts. Any tools to track this? I am not sure what should I start with.

• Experience with MooseFS?

  Anyone have any experience using MooseFS? I want an easy distributed storage platform to store static data archive of about 10 TB and serve it to 20-40 nodes. Also I want to be able to add storage as the archive grows without having to rebuild the filesystem. I don't care if it's a bit slow. I just want it to be simple and stable. Basically from what I can see for OS X it's between MooseFS and Gluster. Any other suggestions?

• Changing languages rapidly causes Linux to crash.

  So I'm running Xmonad on my college computer (which runs Kubuntu) and whenever I leave my desk, instead of using x-screensaver which is incredibly buggy and slow, I just change to another workstation, open a terminal and change language to a language which uses symbols instead of letters, and then change back using an aliased command. For example, my .profile has the lines alias qwer="setxkbmap jp" alias *******="setxkbmap ie" where ******* is my password, using japanese characters. Changing languages seems to be much faster than running x-screensaver. The problem: rapidly changing languages seems to crash Linux; it just won't accept input (and it's not because the language hasn't changed back, nothing is output to the console). I can't use Ctrl+Alt+F1..F7, I can't "raise the elephants", anything, it just won't work. I'm just wondering, is this a known issue, and if so, is there something I can do about it?

  Hi All, I have a friend that hosts his website on IIS and Windows Server 2003 R2 32-bit. He has .WMV files and .MPG and others and some of these are 30 mb in size! He wonders why users complain the site is slow! So my question is how can we reduce the size of these movies? What software? What settings for bit-rate, etc? Is there free software? I can use either a Mac or a PC. Thoughts are appreciated.

• Different versions of 2.5" drives? Unscreawing Intel 320 for slimmer drive to fit newer thinkpads?

  My x60s laptops come with about 1-2mm heigher 2.5" HDD than newer x220 models. This is totally stupid when one would like to reuse the old drive in the newer laptops. I bought newer 2.5" 320 Intel SSDs and they seem to have such 1-2mm gap to unscrew but I am unsure whether it is meant for opening. Could someone instruct what to do here? Look the manufacturer has started changing the old good 2.5" drives into slightly different versions, now it means slow compability issues to fix or totally new 2.5" drives. Ideas how to proceed? Unscrewing newer 320 drives or are some other versions of 2.5" drives meant for x220? Does there exist some sort of racks to get drives working between different comps? Perhaps booting from laplink is currently the easiest solution to get things working when changing harddrives between comps?   I think anyone who's used Oracle SQL Developer will agree that it's painfully slow on the load. My research has lead me to a solution that seems to have helped a little, and that's telling OSQLD not to check for updates on startup. However, it still takes several minutes to open. What could OSQLD possibly be doing during load time? Is there any way get it to open right away?   I have got a laptop which is configured to have the user profile in a network drive. This is causing me a lot of headaches since the connectivity to my company is very slow. I want to relocate the profile of my user into a local directory. How do I do that? Those are the settings at the moment: C:\>set HOME HOMEDRIVE=P: HOMEPATH=\ HOMESHARE=\\SOMESERVER\_myuser$ The drive P is a network drive mapped to HOMESHARE. I can't find where windows is setting those environment variables, not even in the registry. The laptop is running Windows XP.

• Applications starts very slowly from a network path

  Hi We have a windows 2008 server which hosts the network share \\srvcompany\lib. This share contains several applications needed for the daily business. Every client/user (all win xp) has shortcuts on the desktop to these apps. We have the problem that at several (but not all) clients the apps starts very slowly. If I copy the application's programm files to a local folder then they'll start fastly. When I watch the memory usage in the task manager on such a "slow" machine while an applications starts I notice that the memory usage grows much slowier than when I start the app from a "fast" machine. But when I copy files with Windows Explorer from this share, the speed is nearly the same. I've also checked the network driver, both tested clients have the same network card with the same driver version. Has anyone an idea where or what I should check next to solve this problem?   Does anyone know of a Firefox plugin that would enable tab-completion (or some other key sequence like Alt-L) of items in drop-down lists in web forms? e.g. ou<TAB>in<TAB>s<TAB> for 'OurCompany - Internal Support' Vimperator's hints mode makes it very ergonomic to focus the drop-down list with a key sequence like f13 but the keyboard interface to the drop-down list still sucks. I very frequently have to pick items from a very long list with very long common prefixes among the entries (e.g. 30-40 starting with OurCompany -), which renders both the built-in keyboard interface and the mouse pretty slow and unergonomic. I basically want readline support for filling webforms!

• Why does Exim puts emails on hold if there are frozen messages in the queue?

  I've a CentOS with CPanel server working as a SMTP server, which currently uses 20 different hostnames and IP addresses to deliver email for an email newsletter service. However, it's extremely slow in sending emails. It's sending like 10 emails per minute, which I check by running the "exim -bpc" command. What could be affecting this? One thing I'm supposing, is that there are frozen messages in the queue, which are slowing down the sending until they're sent out, and are putting new messages on hold. What are the most common reasons a message can get frozen? Also, would it be more efficient to use 20 different small VPSs to send out email rather than use one large VPS with the 20 different hostnames and IPs in it?

  i have thunderbird 3.x, and i'm subscribed to several RSS feeds. How can I tell thunderbird to load/download any new RSS items in the background? The usual behavior with RSS feeds is that it download the headrs, or few introductory lines from the contents, but only when i'm clicking a feed item it starts loading "for real". I really want to receive the feeds and not to wait for them to load, the same way i receive emails in any email client - all messages are fully downloaded at once. there could be several reasons, BTW. - e.g. if i have short connection time, i'd rather connect, sync everything at once, and read it later. - or if i have a slow wifi connection, it's annoying to wait for each and every message, but the computer is idle while reading.. thanks

  I have a very strange question today - how do I share my dial up internet (yeah I know you are gonna say that is slow but broadband internet isn't available in my area), so dial up and 3G connection is all I got. I also have a Vodafone USB 3G modem that picks up 3G network, I am planning to use my Vodafone 3G modem in the day since I have free dial up internet from 7:00 pm in the night untill 7am the next morning. • How can I specify custom folders for file-browsing in Metro Apps?

  Whenever you use an Metro app and you want to import some files there is a little file browser. Like this: A lot of folders possible; however there is a folder that is very important: The personal Dropbox. How can I add this folder as a "favorite" in this view? Always browsing through the whole filesystem is slow in the Metro Interface. I realize I could make symlinks for all the typical Dropbox folders but that's simply annoying and there has to be another way (just like it's possible to "hack" the "Send To..." options for the context menu.

• msn 2011 extremely laggy at time?

  Hi I am using msn 2011 and think they done a terrible job on it. It seems so buggy. At times when I type a message it is like a slide show. If I would type a sentence you could see it really struggle and the sentence would show up seconds after you typed it. This only happens sometimes. I heard this is something to do with some ad's that are making it slow. Does anyone have a fix for this? Also I noticed like 70% of the time when I check auto login(remember my password and username) it forgets that I checked the box the next time I start my computer up. So I end up typing in my username and password. Thanks

• Monitor windows startup process

  My win7 starts up pretty slow lately. I think it's some kind of malware, but my antivirus software doesn't pick up anything. How could i monitor the startup processes myself? It seems to me like either something's doing a lot of work, or some important windows process hangs for a while, since there's stuff that i can do while it's starting (like start a console), and stuff that i can't do (like execute the systeminfo command in the console) So if you happen to know how i can monitor my system, that would be great.   I'm looking to deploy several virtual machines for users. They need access to both Windows and Linux. They also need to use the computers graphics card (for Photoshop, modeling, etc) under Windows. My question is, will an Ubuntu host/Windows guest or a Windows host/Ubuntu guest be faster? I'm somewhat worried about Windows getting a cluttered registry and slow, but on the otherhand, a Windows host would have direct access to hardware (Unless I'm just unaware of how to grant hardware access to a guest). Does the choice of software (VMware or VirtualBox) effect the choice?

• Possible causes for Domain server being unavailable?

  One of our servers was compromised after a user with administrative privileges accidentally loaded a virus from a USB drive on a desktop connected to the domain. The two most obvious symptoms of this were: The server is no longer responding to login attempts The root directory of the drive containing user data has been filled with randomly named empty folders. (Initially it was around a million folders, I've been slowly deleting them.) I've run several virus scans from different vendors and am fairly confident the virus has been removed but the damage is done. I'm hoping the two symptoms are related and that once the directories are gone the server will start responding again. The drive is very slow to respond. I'm deleting about 20k folders at a time. Anymore than that and windows explorer becomes unresponsive. In the event that I finish cleaning up the HD and things don't return to normal what other things can I check?

  I have a very slow laptop that I need to reboot 3 times a day. It is connected to a Windows domain. I have managed to get it to auto-logon, but I still get prompted to hit ok after reading a legal notice. I have cleaned out [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] and exported it. I import it every 10 minutes via a script. How can I permanently remove the legal notice. A new laptop is not an option right now.

• How to install software packages on a Mac? (MacPorts, Fink, anything better?)

  On my Mac OS X machine, how would you recommend I install command line software and other packages? I've been using MacPorts and it always seems quite slow, presumably because it has to compile the packages on-the-fly. I'd much prefer a package management system that has binary packages, saving me the need to compile things every time I want to download something new. I think Fink has binaries for some of the packages, but I usually see MacPorts recommended as the system to use. Which do you think works better and why? (Or is there another system that I haven't heard of?)

• Configuring memcached for a particular scenario

  I have a web application which queries opentsdb server(which in backend using Hbase cluster) for the datapoints of different metrics and using dygraph javascript graphing library, I am plotting those metrics. Since getting all the datapoints of past one day from opentsdb for a particular metric is itself taking nearly 2 seconds, my application which is plotting nearly 25 metrics is becoming very slow. In order to reduce this latency, I am thinking of using memcached module of php5 for caching all the queries. But I have few questions regarding memcached. Is there any way I can configure memcache to keep on updating its cache in the background by running some command line queries after particular interval of time. Is there any way I can configure memcache to always reply for a query using cache instead of first updating its cache because my application just plots datapoints for past one day. Missing out some datapoints is not that critical.
