• Login problems on SQL EXPRESS using a user

  Hello Serverfault. First time I set up a SQL server, so I hope you can help me out. I have a problem regarding logging in using SQL auth on my SQL EXPRESS 2008. I have added a user though the management interface as you can see on the image below. But as soon as I try to login using SQL auth I get an error the login failed for the user. The server log says: Login failed for user 'zebisgaard'. Reason: Could not find a login matching the name provided. [CLIENT: <named pipe>] Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 5. Do you have an idea why? I have triple checked that the username/password is correct, tried to recreate the user and so much more. And all this is localhost.

• SQL Server iSCSI session issue with a NetApp SAN

  We had an issue early this morning when iSCSI issues broke connectivity with a few of our databases (resulting in a SQL Server Error 21). Attempts to DBCC CheckDB did not work, and the only solution was to restart the SQL Service. Is there a known reason why an iSCSI initiator session would reset itself out of the blue? Example below from the NetApp syslog. This set of errors was replicated 4 times (once for each SQL server in production). Only one SQL server was noticeably impacted, however.   I have read up online, and through some threads here like this one. But I'm still confused and need to see if anyone can shed some light. My company is deploying a clickonce application that will be on multiple computers (about 50). It will be accessing an SQL Server database and I was wondering what kind of SQL Server licensing should I/need to have? The application currently logs in via SQL Server authentication using one SQL Server user. It seems logical that I would just need one user CAL and even through there will be up to 50 connections it should all still work. Am I right?

• SQL Server Express Uninstall / Enterprise Install Issue

  I need help installing SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition.I really need to remove the current SQL Server 2005.installation that is no longer on my Add/Remove software list but yet still installed on the machine. I tried to uninstall SQL Server Express / Developer Edition but it only removed it from my Add/Remove software list. It returned immediately but did NOT actually remove the product. (I'm now in a bad state.) i tried to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise and its says I'm blocked as all components are already installed - but they are not. How can I remove all instance of previous one and install clean Enterprise edition on my server Thanks

• Optimizing Disk I/O & RAID on Windows SQL Server 2005

  I've been monitoring our SQL server for a while, and have noticed that I/O hits 100% every so often using Task Manager and Perfmon. I have normally been able to correlate this spike with SUSPENDED processes in SQL Server Management when I execute "exec sp_who2". The RAID controller is controlled by LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager. We have the following setup: System Drive (Windows) on RAID 1 with two 280GB drives SQL is on a RAID 10 (2 mirroed drives of 280GB in two different spans) This is a database that is hammered during the day, but is pretty inactive at night. The DB size is currently about 13GB, and is used by approximately 200 (and growing) users a day. I have a couple of ideas I'm toying around with: Checking for Indexes & reindexing some tables Adding an additional RAID 1 (with 2 new, smaller, HDs) and moving the SQL's Log Data File (LDF) onto the new RAID. For #2, my question is this: Would we really be increasing disk performance (IO) by moving data off of the RAID 10 onto a RAID 1? RAID 10 obviously has better performance than RAID 1. Furthermore, SQL must write to the transaction logs before writing to the database. But on the flip side, we'll be reducing both the size of the disks as well as the amount of data written to the RAID 10, which is where all of the "meat" is - thereby increasing that RAID's performance for read requests. Is there any way to find out what our current limiting factor is? (The drives vs. the RAID Controller)? If the limiting factor is the drives, then maybe adding the additional RAID 1 makes sense. But if the limiting factor is the Controller itself, then I think we're approaching this thing wrong. Finally, are we just wasting our time? Should we instead be focusing our efforts towards #1 (reindexing tables, reducing network latency where possible, etc...)?

  I just migrated a development workstation FROM: Windows XP Pro SP3 with IIS 6 TO: Vista Enterprise 64bit with IIS 7 Since the move, one of my pages that accesses an SQL Server 2000 database is receiving the following error from my ASP.NET 2.0 web page: "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'." I have: enabled Windows Authentication in IIS and web.config disabled Anonymous Authentication in IIS set up Impersonation to run as the authenticated user verified that the logged in user (in this case, me) has access to the appropriate database on the SQL Server verified that my login and impersonation information is correct in the ASP.NET page by checking User.Identity.Name and System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name (both display my username) My connection string using SqlConnection is "Server={SERVER_NAME};Database={DB_NAME};Integrated Security=SSPI;Trusted_Connection=True;" Why is it trying to login with NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGIN? I have to assume it's some setting or web.config entry specific to IIS7 since it worked fine before the migration. NOTE: The SQL Server is Windows authentication only - no mixed mode or SQL only.

  I have tried disabling firing wall and checked sqlbrowser is started but for some reason I cannnot connect to my datbase... called server_name\sqlexpress.. I have a virtual machine and a full scale MS SQL Server 2008 R2 running on it... and I have several other vm running sqlexpress. they run fine and I can connect to them using sqlexpress... but when i try to access from sqlserver... • SQL Server replication and load balance

  I'm running a web service that serves a mobile app on IIS 8 and SQL Server 2014, my service has a massive load and i'm trying to improve performance, most of the load is happening on SQL. i don't think i have a bottleneck, my processor and ram is up to the max and i think my code is not that bad, am already using memcached and other stuff to avoid hitting SQL too much. i know i can always upgrade the server hardware but i already have a spare server that i would like to use, so i was thinking to split the SQL load on the 2 servers. What i was thinking of is to setup replication on the other server and do some load balancing, but am not sure how to do the load balance. I know i can adjust my code to hit the other server for some queries but i was hoping to find a solution that avoid changing my code. So my question is, What are the ways of doing load balancing between 2 SQL servers ? I would appreciate suggestions or best practices or some directions. Thanks.

• Archive Manager, SQL 2005 and MaxTokenSize high CPU

  So, I posted this question a few days ago: Impact of increasing the MaxTokenSize for Kerberos Tickets Since then the thought was to test our settings on two member servers, one with IIS and one without. I setup two GPOs to configure the MaxTokenSize reg setting to 48000 and MaxFieldLength/MaxRequestBytes to 64200 (based on MS KB2020943, these are set at 4/3 * T + 200). The member server seemed to work ok (a devalued tape backup server). The IIS server however has had some strange repercussions. The IIS Sserver host Quest Software Archive Manager (AM) 4.5 that communicates with SQL Server 2005 Enterprise on Server 2003 R2. After the changes all looked good until the SQL Server hit 100% CPU. I have removed the GPOS, removed the reg values and even replaced them with defaults (12000 for token size and can't remember the other one but was in a blog post about the issue in my other post). No change. Bouncing the IIS Server stops the high CPU and a colleague has looked at the SQL server and it is definitely the AM connection taking up the time/work on the SQL server. I haven't changed the reg values on the SQL server or the DCs but am reluctant to do so without understanding why this has happened. I am guessing its to do with the overriding auth and group issue we have but I am not seeing Kerberos errors in either event log. Has anyone seen something similar or does anyone have some tips? Was definitely blindsided by the Kerberos issue and am swimming against the tide to keep things functioning.

One of the subscription agents just started getting error 15164. The results of sp_helpsubscriptionerrors is: Source: MSSQL_ENG Error: 15165 Text: Could not find object '(null)' or you do not have permission. Command Id: 320 I have made sure that the SQL Server agent login has both Windows and SQL security access. Full access to the directory structure and sysadmin access to the SQL Server. What else can I do to try to troubleshoot/fix this? Thanks!

• Accessing SQL with the PC name not the IP

  I'm trying to connect to a SQL instance (default instance) on a machine. When using the IP of the machine it connects to the machine. Using the name of the machine on that machine you are able to establish a connection to the SQL instance but using the machine name on another PC the connection cannot be established. And gives the error A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. ... (Microsoft Server, Error: 10060) The machine that I am trying to establish the connection from can ping the machine with the SQL instance both on the IP and on the name. Why would this be and how can I fix it? Edit: pinging the name does resolve the correct IP. Pinging the FQDN also works correctly.

  I have SpiceWorks 4.7, installed and added the sql monitor extension to monitor our SQL servers. It does identify our sql servers correctly, but when I put the login information in it can't authenticate, with the following error message. Authentication failed. Check the login and password, and ensure that the server is configured for remote connections. I get the same result trying to use windows authentication. WE do use an alternate port# could this be the problem?

  Hi, Our environment is: Windows Server 2003, Service Pack 2 SQL Server Express 2005 SQLServer JDBC driver 1.2 (also tried Jtds) Sun JDK 1.6 (we tried this on JDK 1.5 as well) There is no virus protection software on the host, and no firewall is enabled. We have Web application deployed in JBOSS 4.0.2. Our problem is that the JDBC connection to SQL server periodically gets disconnected, and then we can't reconnect to the SQL server at all, unless we physically restart the server on which JBOSS deployed. we are getting following error in log. Software caused connect on abort: recv failed Note: We are able to connect to SQL server using sample java test class. Any suggestions would be most appreciated, as this is a serious, mission-criticial problem for us right now.

  Hi Guys, I have installed the above update through Windows Update. The update went through, reported a successful installation, and then straight after that it came back as an available update. I have done it a few times and my update log now contains multiple successful installations of KB995706. I have tried to uncheck it in the list of updates but it keeps coming back as well. The machine is a Server 2008 RC2 Standard. It's got SQL Server 2005 Express as well as SQL Server 2008 Standard. • IIS Hangs on SQL Connections when running ASP.net applications

  We have a database server running SQL 2000 and two web servers hosting ASP.net applications. All three servers are running Windows Server 2003 SP2. Our issue is repeatable after about 2 weeks, IIS on one web server is no longer able to establish SQL connections. Static content loads fine. Other non-IIS applications are still able to contact the SQL database server. ODBC functionality also still works. While running SQL profiler a connection is never established from IIS when it is in this state. The only way to fix this situation is to restart the web server. There are no firewalls installed on any machines.

• Trouble connecting to a local SQL server instance from the web

  We have a small network behind a firewall (WatchGuard XTM 2 series) and network switch. On our network we have multiple instances of SQL server, but 1 in specific that I would like to be able to access remotely from our website. We have a static IP address from our ISP and then all the machines on the network have a locally assigned dynamic IP address. When trying to connect to the database from outside our network how do I get the request to be directed to the proper machine / SQL instance? Is it a parameter in my connection string or something in my firewall? A few things to rule out: 1) The firewall is allowing access from the website to our network. I added the site's IP and opened up port 1433. Also, when trying to connect and monitoring the firewall no exceptions come up as they did before I added the proper IP address. 2) Remote connections on the SQL server has been setup and enabled. I've done a lot of reading up on remote connections and I am sure it has been setup properly. I am currently getting this error message on my site: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
