• Connecting PS3 dualshock on Ubuntu 14.04 with 3.13.0-34-generic?

  The last entries/queries I can find about PS3 dual shock controller are dealing with older kernel versions. It looks like there may still be a problem with using the PS3 dual shock via USB(or bluetooth) with 14.04? I'm only guessing because I get no sign of detection or input when I plug in the USB. When I run dmesg | grep sony [ 4687.762302] sony 0003:054C:0268.0003: can't set operational mode [ 4687.770639] sony: probe of 0003:054C:0268.0003 failed with error -38 So at this point, I don't know if it's worth running : sudo apt-get install xboxdrv I also found this article LINK but it's dated 01/2013. I was considering installing steam, and checking out some of the games. There are a few in particular I want to check out, but I'm afraid of purchasing them and then my controller does not work. I don't have a ps3, I just have the controller for Sixaxis/emulator/Android set up... I see mentions for QTsixa and xboxdrv, but the posts are at least a year old(older distibution/kernels) Ideally, I'd like to just plug in USB, and play. No Bluetooth.

• Tomcat + Spring + CI workflow

  We're starting our very first project with Spring and java web stack. This project will be mainly about rewriting quite large ERP/CRM from Zend Framework to Java. Important factor in my question is that I come from php territory, where things (in terms of quality) tend to look different than in java world. Fatcs: there will be 2-3 developers, at least one of developers uses Windows, rest uses Linux, there is one remote linux-based machine, which should handle test and production instances, after struggling with buggy legacy code, we want to introduce good programming and development practices (CI, tests, clean code and so on) client: internal, frequent business logic changes, scrum, daily deployments What I want to achieve is good workflow on as many development stages as possible (coding - commiting - testing - deploying). The problem is that I've never done this before, so I don't know what are best practices to do this. What I have so far is: developers code locally, there is vagrant instance on every development machine, managed by puppet. It contains the same linux, jenkins and tomcat versions as production machine, while coding, developer deploys to vagrant machine, after local merge to test branch, jenkins on vagrant handles tests, when everything is fine, developer pushes commits and merges jenkins on remote machine pulls commit from test branch, runs tests and so on, if everything looks green, jenkins deploys to test tomcat instance Deployment to production is manual (altough it can be done using helping scripts) when business logic is tested by other divisions and everything looks fine to client. Now, the real question: does above make any sense? Things that I'm not sure about: Remote machine: won't there be any problems with two (or even three, as jenkins might need one) instances of same app on tomcat? Using vagrant to develop on php environment is just vise. Isn't this overkill while using Tomcat? I mean, is there higher probability that tomcat will act the same on every machine? Is there sense of having local jenkins on vagrant?

• Build vs Rebuild

  Build means compile and link only the source files that have changed since the last build, while Rebuild means compile and link all source files regardless of whether they changed or not. Build is the normal thing to do and is faster. Sometimes the versions of project target components can get out of sync and rebuild is necessary to make the build successful. In practice, you never need to Clean. Build or Rebuild Solution builds or rebuilds all projects in the your solution, while Build or Rebuild <project name> builds or rebuilds the StartUp project. To set the StartUp project, right click on the desired project name in the Solution Explorer tab and select Set as StartUp project. The project name now appears in bold. Compile just compiles the source file currently being edited. Useful to quickly check for errors when the rest of your source files are in an incomplete state that would prevent a successful build of the entire project. Ctrl-F7 is the shortcut key for Compile. All source files that have changed are saved when you request a build/rebuild, so you don't have to save them first. When you run your executable (F5 or Ctrl-F5), Visual Studio saves all your changed source files and builds anything that changed, so you don't need to explicitly do those steps every time. This allows for quick "trial and error" debugging. • Is the development of CLI apps considered "backwards"?

  I am a DBA fledgling with a lot of experience in programming. I have developed several CLI, non interactive apps that solve some daily repetitive tasks or eliminate the human error from more complex albeit not so daily tasks. These tools are now part of our tool box. I find CLI apps are great because you can include them in an automated workflow. Also the Unix philosophy of doing a single thing but doing it well, and letting the output of a process be the input of another, is a great way of building a set of tools than would consolidate into an strategic advantage. My boss recently commented that developing CLI tools is "backwards", or constitutes a "regression". I told him I disagreed, because most CLI tools that exist now are not legacy but are live projects with improved versions being released all the time. Is this kind of development considered "backwards" in the market? Does it look bad on a rèsumè? I also considered all solutions whether they are web or desktop, should have command line, non-interactive options. Some people consider this a waste of programming resources. Is this goal a worthy one in a software project?

• Partitioning Strategies for P6 Reporting Database

  Prior to P6 Reporting Database version 3.2 sp1 range partitioning was used. This was applied only to the history tables. The ranges were defined during installation and additional ranges would need to be added once your date range entered the final defined range. As of P6 Reporting Database version 3.2 sp1, interval partitioning was implemented. Interval partitioning was applied to the existing History table as well as Slowly Changing Dimension tables. One of the major advantages of interval partitioning is there is no more manual addition of ranges. The interval partitioning will automatically create partitions for the defined interval when data is inserted into the table and it exceeds the existing partitions. In 3.2 sp1 there are steps on how to update your partitioning. For all versions after 3.2 sp1 interval partitioning is the only partitioning option used. When upgrading it is important to be aware of these changes.   Since the Chromium PPA is no longer maintained, for those of us preferring to use chromium over chrome, we have two options: Build and Install from Source Download either 'beta' or daily builds (in a zip file) Unfortunately for me, option 1 is overly complicated. I know how to compile most any other applications in Ubuntu but I've never been able to get chromium to build correctly. I am currently using option 2. In Chromium I have the Chromium Updater installed (http://goo.gl/ffAMy). This gives me quick access to the most recent 64bit versions. Once downloaded, I install to /home/myuser/opt/chrome-linux. From this directory I can run the chrome binary. It works perfectly except for the fact that I cannot get it to act as my default browser. I've tried, as root, installing the binary in /opt/chrome-linux/ with a symbolic link to the 'chrome' binary in /usr/bin. Unfortunately, this doesn't work as a non root user. So my question is - How do I properly install a downloaded chromium zip build so tht it's listed as an option for the default browser?

• Can I improve my AdWords quality scores with better landing pages?

  I noticed that I have some keywords in my AdWords that are totally applicable to my site but the quality score of the keyword is 4 or 5. I'd like to get it up higher by creating custom versions of my site's home page (landing page) targeted specifically for people searching on those keywords. So for example, if we pretend my site sells pet food, my current home page has the phrase "dog food." I have a specific AdWords campaign for people searching on cat food (with cat food-specific ads). I'm thinking about changing the URL on those ads to something like http://mysite.com/cat.html, so a different home page comes up with the phrase "cat food." My thinking is that will help Google see that this new landing page is appropriate for the keywords and will raise my quality score for the "cat food" keywords. (Note that none of what I'm doing is shady or misleading; nobody would disagree that all of the keywords and ads I've created are perfect and appropriate for what my site offers.) Question: is what I describe the correct way to raise poor quality scores on keywords, and will it help?

  I downloaded Komparator source from this page. The INSTALL file in the source say the following: Unpack komparator4-xxx.tar.bz2, and open a shell inside this directory mkdir build cd build cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` .. make sudo make install I unpacked the file, make the directory, entered this, but when I have tried to cmake (sentece Nº3) the terminal print the following errors disabling me to make & install: CMake Error at /usr/share/cmake-2.8/Modules/FindKDE4.cmake:98 (MESSAGE): ERROR: cmake/modules/FindKDE4Internal.cmake not found in /home/lucio/.kde/share/apps;/usr/share/kde4/apps Call Stack (most recent call first): CMakeLists.txt:2 (find_package) CMake Warning (dev) in CMakeLists.txt: No cmake_minimum_required command is present.   A few weeks ago, my colleague Michael Seback posted a blog entry on Oracle’s acquisition of Haley.  We recently read  an interesting report from Down Under, and here was our press release on the  implementation of Oracle’s Policy automation software in New South Wales, which I thought I would share. We always love hearing about our software “at work”, and especially in the Public Sector- social services area, where it makes a big difference to people’s lives. Here were some of the reasons, why NSW chose Oracle software: “One of the things Oracle’s Policy Automation system is good at is allowing you take decision  trees and rules that are obviously written in English and code them up using very much a natural language approach,” said Holling (CIO for Human Services). “So it was quite a short process to translate the final set of rules that were written on paper into business rules that were actually embedded in the system.” “Another reason why we chose Oracle’s Automation tool is because with future versions of Siebel it comes very tightly integrated with that. • Office 2010 Client &ndash; Should I go with 32 bit or 64 bit?

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). As you know, Office 2010 client now comes in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The question is, should you go with 32 bit or 64 bit? 64 is bigger than 32 .. so 64 is better no? NO! Given a choice, or unless you have a very strong reason not to – GO WITH 32 bit. Why is that? Here is why - 32 bit apps actually work better on 64 bit OS’s in most scenarios due to WoW, and the additional 64 bit VLSW calculations. If you have 2007 installations to support, SharePoint designer 2010 cannot be used to work with SharePoint 2007 sites. So you will have to install SharePoint designer 2007 32bit side by side with SharePoint designer 2010 32 bit side by side. So you cannot mix and match 32 bit and 64 bit here. Of course you can virtualize and not have this problem to begin with :-D. 64 bit office will break many things on your SharePoint experience for that client – example, that fancy datasheet view won’t work on lists. 32 bit office apps don’t have this issue. There are some extreme situations where you DO want 64 bit client apps though. Specifically if you have HUGE excel sheets to work with, then 64 bit office client excel is much better than the equivalent 32 bit excel. Comment on the article ....

• Laptop keyboard and touchpad disabled on startup

  I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my Toshiba Satellite L775D laptop. 14.04 is the only operating system installed. I am new to Linux and only barely scratching the surface of doing things in terminal. When I boot my laptop keyboard and touchpad are disabled (99.99% of the time) if I do nothing. The only direct effect I can have is to keep pressing the "numlock" key during boot when I notice the "numlock" light goes off. If I do this then I have a 95% chance of the keyboard and touchpad working when I am in the operating system. I am able to use my wireless mouse regardless. I have not seen any messages during boot. Previously I have tried playing with input method settings and utilities as well as language support settings. This same problem exists with the 12.... and 13... versions of ubuntu. With everything I have tried (from looking at other posts/suggestions) it seems I can have only a temporary effect. Please help me find a permanent solution to this problem. thank you.

• Data Structure for Small Number of Agents in a Relatively Big 2D World

  I'm working on a project where we will implement a kind of world simulation where there is a square 2D world. Agents live on this world and make decisions like moving or replicating themselves based on their neighbor cells(world=grid) and some extra parameters(which are not based on the state of the world). I'm looking for a data structure to implement such a project. My concerns are : I will implement this 3 times: sequential, using OpenMP, using MPI. So if I can use the same structure that will be quite good. The first thing comes up is keeping a 2D array for the world and storing agent references in it. And simulate the world for each time slice by checking every cell in each iteration and further processing if an agents is found in the cell. The downside is what if I have 1000x1000 world and only 5 agents in it. It will be an overkill for both sequential and parallel versions to check each cell and look for possible agents in them. I can use quadtree and store agents in it, but then how can I get the information about neighbor cells then? Please let me know if I should elaborate more.

• Ubuntu 12.04 desktop, VNC viewer not refreshing screen

  I've had this issues across multiple machines and multiple versions of Ubuntu desktop (all 10.04 or later). Usually it happens with an old laptop I've put Ubuntu on but now it's happening on my primary dev machine (a quad-core PC recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 desktop). The problem is this - I can connect to the machine and login with the password, the initial screen looks fine but never refreshes. I can see the monitor for the machine across the room and can see the mouse move and the menus pop up but the image of the screen on the PC in front me running the VNC viewer never updates. So the mouse and keyboard commands are working. Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop Ultra VNC Viewer (also seen with RealVNC's free VNC viewer) Desktop Sharing Static IP on eth0; Dynamic ID on eth1 I think it is an Ubuntu config issue because this PC used to work just fine with 9.04, 10.04, and 11.10 (over the past couple of years). I've also had a couple of laptops that used to have this issue with older Ubuntu's but don't with 12.04. Additional info: The Win7 PC I'm trying to use to control the Ubuntu PC is connected via 2 DLink 8-port gigabit routers. The Ubuntu laptop I usually control via VNC is typically only connected to the network via wireless. The screen refresh is choppy but usable. I've repeated the issue on a Win7 laptop which was connected via ethernet and wireless.

• X-notifier doesn't work in Chromium Browser

  It just keeps checking in vain. Also cannot import or export data, but get this error I use the latest versions of both in Lubuntu 12.04. In Google Chrome it works. What could it be the problem? • ODBC in SSIS 2012

  In August 2011 the SQL Server client team published a blog post entitled Microsoft is Aligning with ODBC for Native Relational Data Access in which they basically said "OLE DB is the past, ODBC is the future. Deal with it.". From that blog post:We encourage you to adopt ODBC in the development of your new and future versions of your application. You don’t need to change your existing applications using OLE DB, as they will continue to be supported on Denali throughout its lifecycle. While this gives you a large window of opportunity for changing your applications before the deprecation goes into effect, you may want to consider migrating those applications to ODBC as a part of your future roadmap.I recently undertook a project using SSIS2012 and heeded that advice by opting to use ODBC Connection Managers rather than OLE DB Connection Managers. Unfortunately my finding was that the ODBC Connection Manager is not yet ready for primetime use in SSIS 2012. The main issue I found was that you can't populate an Object variable with a recordset when using an Execute SQL Task connecting to an ODBC data source; any attempt to do so will result in an error:"Disconnected recordsets are not available from ODBC connections." I have filed a bug on Connect at ODBC Connection Manager does not have same funcitonality as OLE DB. For this reason I strongly recommend that you don't make the move to ODBC Connection Managers in SSIS just yet - best to wait for the next version of SSIS before doing that.I found another couple of issues with the ODBC Connection Manager that are worth keeping in mind:It doesn't recognise System Data Source Names (DSNs), only User DSNs (bug filed at ODBC System DSNs are not available in the ODBC Connection Manager)  UPDATE: According to a comment on that Connect item this may only be a problem on 64bit.In the OLE DB Connection Manager parameter ordinals are 0-based, in the ODBC Connection Manager they are 1-based (oh I just can't wait for the upgrade mess that ensues from this one!!!)You have been warned!@jamiet

  I have a problem with my sound card. I don't have volume up or down option anywhere. In the setting -> Sound I don't have any card detected. • Embedded Nashorn in JEditorPane

  Here's a prototype for some kind of backoffice content management system. Several interesting goodies are included, such as an embedded JavaScript editor, as can be seen in the screenshot: Key items of interest in the above are as follows: Embedded JavaScript editor (i.e., the latest and greatest Nashorn technology, look it up, if you're not aware of what that is.) The way that's done is to include the relevant JavaScript modules in your NetBeans Platform application. Make very sure to include "Lexer to NetBeans Bridge", which does a bunch of critical stuff under the hood. The JEditorPane is defined as follows, along the lines that I blogged about recently thanks to Steven Yi: javaScriptPane.setContentType("text/javascript"); EditorKit kit = CloneableEditorSupport.getEditorKit("text/javascript"); javaScriptPane.setEditorKit(kit); javaScriptPane.getDocument().putProperty("mimeType", "text/javascript"); Note that "javaScriptPane" above is simply a JEditorPane. Timon Veenstra's excellent solution for integrating Nodes with MultiViewElements, which is described here by Timon, and nowhere else in the world. The tab you see above is within a pluggable container, so anyone else could create a new module and register their own MultiViewElement such that it will be incorporated into the editor. • dpkg reporting as installed, uninstalled kernels

  I have run the following command to remove old kernels: dpkg -l 'linux-*' | sed '/^ii/!d;/'"$(uname -r | sed "s/\(.*\)-\([^0-9]\+\)/\1/")"'/d;s/^[^ ]* [^ ]* \([^ ]*\).*/\1/;/[0-9]/!d' | xargs sudo apt-get -y purge and only the current kernel is now installed, which I have confirmed in synaptic and by checking my boot partition. • Forking a GPL dual licensed software with business owned copyrights

  After receiving some threats of the copyrights holder of a dual licensed software(GPL2 and commercial) to buy the commercial version for projects in production, I am thinking to make a fork. In a case of GPL2 and commercially dual licensed with business owned copyrights software, is forking the GPL2 version an option? Also, is forking a good way to deal with such cases? Background information The software is a web CMS released under 2 versions a GPL2 free open source edition and a commercial edition including technical support and extra functionality. The problem is that now, basing their argumentation on the "distribution" definition of the GPL2, the company holding the copyrights argue that delivering the software and some extensions to a client is considered as a "distribution". And that such a "distribution" falls under the GPL2 obligation to release the custom made extension code. Custom made extensions are mainly designs, templates and very specific functionality. Basically they give me 3 choices: Buying the commercial licensed edition for projects based on the GPL in production, Deleting all the projects in production based on GPL2 version, Releasing all the extensions as GPL2 code. The first 2 options are nothing realistic for finished projects. The third option could be fine, but as most of the extensions are very specific, cleaning the code to make it usable by other users means lot of works and also I am not sure the clients will appreciate to have their website designs and specific functionality released publicly. The copyrights holding company even contacted some clients directly, giving them the "choice". I know that this is a very corporate interpretation of GPL2, and a such action is nothing close to legal, but as an independent developer, I don't want to take the risk to get involved in some long and tiring legal procedures. PS. This question was first asked on Stack Overflow where it felt out of the scope and closed, after reading the present site FAQ, discussing about software licensing seems fine.

• Model a chain with different elements in Unity 3D

  I have to model, in unity 3D, a chain that is composed of various elements. some flexible, some rigid. The idea is to realize a human-chain where each person is linked to the other by their hands. I've not tried to implement it yet as i've no idea on what could be a good way to do it. In the game i've to manage a lot of chains of people... maybe also 100 chains composed of 11-15 people. The chain will be pretty simple and there won't be much interaction... Probabily some animation of the people one at time for each chain and some physic reaction (for example pushing a people in a chain should slightle flex the chain) the very problem of this work is that in the chain each object is composed by flexible parts (arms) and rigid parts (the body) and that the connection should remain firm... just like when people handshake... hands are firm and are the wrists to move. i can use C4D to model the meshes. i know this number may cause performance problems, but it's also true i will use low-poly versions of human. (for the real it won't be human, but very simple toonish characters that have harms and legs). So actually i'm trying to find a way to manage this in a way it can work, the performance will be a later problem that i can solve. If there is not a fast 'best-practiced' solution and you have any link/guide/doc that could help me in finding a way to realize this is, it would be very appreciated anyway if you post it. thanks
