• Logitech SetPoint update seems to be hanging

  I've just gotten a new Logitech Wireless Wave Combo MK550 mouse and keyboard. I pulled it in, and have installed the software that came on the CD, which is SetPoint 6.15. After installing it, it said that it had an update, so I started the installation for that. Now it's at a point where it says, "Approximately 30 second remaining...". It has been that way for 30 minutes, not 30 seconds. So, what's going on? I'm installing this on a Windows 7 Home Premium system, 64-bit OS.

• How would I Enable FTP on Home PC (Win7)?

  In my home, all PCs connect through a small router. Some wired and some wireless. Our Media PC (HTPC) is controlled via a Media Center TV style remote, so managing files on it is tedious. I can access all of the files on the HTPC from my desktop PC, but moving a 6 GB file from \\HTPC\Folder1 to \\HTPC\Folder2 involves copying the data to the desktop and then transferring it back. If I were on the HTPC, this would likely be handled by a simple address change for the file (i.e. it would be done almost instantly). I'm thinking if I could get an FTP program to connect to the HTPC, I could simplify things ...but how do I enable that ability on the HPTC? Then, how would I go about connecting to the HTPC? Would I simply enter \\HTPC as the FTP address?

• How to route traffic via another machine before the default gateway

  At the moment I have a router on 192.168.0.1, a Linux box on 192.168.0.2 and desktop clients from 192.168.0.3. Everything works with 192.168.0.1 as the default gateway. I'd like to send the traffic from the desktop clients via the Linux box before it goes out through the router so I can sniff the traffic (some of these are wireless connections). Can I set the default gateway to 192.168.0.2 on the desktop clients and then perhaps add some iptables rules to forward this traffic through 192.168.0.1? Quite happy to change the client desktops to another subnet if that makes it easier. Thanks in advance.

• Windows 7 cannot connect wirelessly to Netgear Router WPN824 V2

  I have a new HP Laptop running Win 7 Home Premium with an Atheros Wireless card. I have a Negear WPN824 V2 Rangemax Router. The router works with a wired connection. Wirelessly it can see the network but it cannot connect. I have searched the web and the WPN824 seems to work for some people, but I cannot get it to connect. I have tried disabling Bonjour Service and a few other things but it continues not to connect. Am I probably correct to assume that the WPN824 is somehow incompatible with Wiondows 7? or am I missing some simple change I should make?

• What security changes are necessary when connecting DSL modem directly to PC instead of router?

  Windows XP I have a user with a single PC that was connected to the internet via a standard home router. The router is now having hardware-related issues and to save money, they're considering connecting the PC directly to the DSL modem since they don't need to share the internet connection or need wireless functionality. If they decide to do that, I'm concerned that this will introduce additional security concerns. Is the Windows Firewall sufficient and Microsoft Security Essentials sufficient for protecting a computer directly connected to a DSL Modem? Or is other security software needed here? Ideally, I'd like to avoid having third-party firewall software constantly bringing up alerts and asking them to approve everything. Also, just to clarify, their use cases are just internet browsing and email.

• Social Media event Bandwidth requirements

  I have an one day event in July 2012, hosting 250 attendees for a social media event. We will be uploading live video to a website, allowing the press to access the web, and some vendors will be showing off their web sites for clients and visitors. The staff will need access for uploading files and information as needed. We had the event last year and tried a cable modem brought in with 2x2 megs just for the streaming video which worked well. I had 4 wireless hot spots, rented from a company 1.5 mbps x 780 kbps, which was were a complete failure. I was assured the 4 hot spots would be enough, but they did not work. What would be the proper way to get the bandwidth required to make the one day event successful? The setting is a Private Country Club where running cables everywhere is very tough.

• Best Linux distro for media server on older box

  I have an older machine with these specs: CPU: AMD Athlon X2 @ 2,8 Ghz, 2MB L2 RAM: 4 GB DDR2@ 800 Mhz GPU: Asus 4890 TOP 1 GB I want to turn the machine into a media server via XBMC (so good video and wireless peripherial driver support would also be a plus), but I also want to use it as an OpenVPN server so I can tunnel RDP to my other Windows machine in the network. I mostly want to use a Debian based distro (for the convenience of apt) and right now my options are: Ubuntu, Xubuntu or Mint. Which one do you think is more fitting? Thanks in advance.

• Server IP must be a LAN IP (Port Forwarding Netgear Router)? [closed]

  I'm trying to set up a server (Apache) on my computer (fairly new to it). As I understand it, for it to be accessible to other computers, I need to forward port 80. When I try to forward the port though, I get the error: Server IP must be a LAN IP. I noticed in ipconfig that my default gateway is different than my wireless router. My computer is not hardwired, not on WiFi. Furthermore, I do not, at this point, have a static IP. I read that it should still work with a dynamic IP until it changes. Any ideas on what I can do? I'm using Windows 7 in case it matters.

  Hey guys I use Clear internet ie wireless to get my connection. I play a game online Eve Online which has had on and off CTD(crash to desktop) due to the connection timing out. Usually I have trouble only late at night after work but today I had no connection at 4 pm. They ran a trace route and Im using Ping plotter to do a trace in real time. I have 100% packet loss at hop 2 and Im getting varible loss at hop 6 at ae-72-70.ebr2.Dallas1.Level3.net Also had windows send a dump to Microsoft mentioning the eve file has a problem requiring it to close. Any thoughts ? TIA!

  I have Tasker for Android but I don't know enough about it to be able to implement this. I'd like this to occur when I am connected to a specific wireless network: If someone phones who isn't in my contact list, reject the call immediately (straight to voicemail). If they call again within a certain amount of time (say, 30 seconds) allow the call to come through. Frankly, I can't even get the first one working. I know it's possible. The time thing is a kind of added bonus

  I have a laptop and a desktop I want to keep files up-to-date on both of them. I was thinking of creating a hard drive on 'server' and then changing "my documents" to that server path. It should work all right when there are two computers but what if a laptop uses wireless access at my house and more importantly, when it's connected wirelessly on a different IP range when I'm at college? For the second case, I guess, creating a VPN/remote server connection to the desktop will work, but if I want to make it automatic (my documents mapping), is there way to do that?

  Aircel, one of the leading wireless mobile services provider of India has just announced that iPhone 4S will be available to its customers on November 25. You can start pre-booking the phone from November 18 through Aircel website or walking into an Aircel showroom near you. My multiple calls to Aircel customer care division were no use to get the details on the price information. Three times the call got disconnected before a customer care executive tried fetching the details on price and models. We hear from BGR India blog that iPhone 4S price is going start at Rs. 40,000 for a 16GB model and may go up to Rs. 50,000 for a 64 GB model. Airtel, another leading mobile service provider in India, who sells iPhone in India is not sure when they are going to start offering iPhone 4S to its customer. I reached customer care regarding the iPhone 4S and they don’t have any details to offer at the moment. It’s good to see Apple releasing iPhone 4S to India markets just after couple of months of International release. Apple was earlier criticized for releasing iPhone 2, iPhone 3G in India almost an year after the international launch while companies like Nokia release their flagship models just after weeks of international launch. One of the most sought after feature of iPhone 4S is Siri and my friends in US told that it works amazingly good. Siri does not have any problem in understanding Indian English accent and it is very good at recognizing the Indian names in contacts list. But at the same time we do hear reports that Siri does not help much if it’s used outside USA. Considering that Siri is a software it should be possible for Apple to improve it to work better outside USA. But who know the priorities of Apple! • Random touchpad and keyboard freezes on new installation

  My touchpad and keyboard freeze up on my newly installed Ubuntu 10.10. They remain frozen until you shut down manually. No keys work, cursor doesn't move - it's like a screenshot. I was using Ubuntu 10.4 via wubi before on this Laptop where this problem never occurred. (I did not migrate wubi or upgrade to 10.10, it's a fresh start. 64-bit on Dell Studio, plenty of RAM, plenty of free space on partition etc.) I can't say there is a pattern yet, once it happened during the download of packages with the Update Manager, once it was just using Firefox, no other program running. In between these crashes the laptop was booted once, updates were installed etc., firefox was used and there weren't any problems. Both crashes should be in the attached kern.log and I noticed there were some error problems before the last crash (at the end, obviously). It seems the wireless was experiencing problems. This wasn't noticed on the user end, since the touchpad + keyboard were already frozen. kern.log: http://paste.ubuntu.com/552617/ How can the freezes be fixed? Edit: I will try Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then Ctrl+Alt+F7 when next freeze occurs, to see if it works again after this, as suggested here. But the keyboard seemed pretty frozen to me.

• Bump the Bill

  I'm writing this from 3,400 feet in the air somewhere between Chicago and Austin. GoGo In-flight strikes again. Is there anywhere I can't get a WiFi connection? While listening to Deacon Blues by Steely Dan and skimming the news, I just came across an interesting article on mobile payments. Remember when I wrote about the iPhone Bump application and its possible use in retail? Well it looks like PayPal updated their mobile payments application to include the bump technology. Now its possible to transfer money between individuals by bumping iPhones. According to the WSJ, Paypal did 24 million transactions in 2008 and 140 million in 2009 on mobile phones. As the technology gets easier to use, that number is bound to increase. Alternatives to Paypal include Google Checkout, Amazon Payments, wireless carriers ("put it on my phone bill"), smart cards (using your phone's SIM card), and iTunes. That last one comes courtesy of a story Joe Skorupa wrote on mobile payments. It looks like Apple allows iPhone apps to take micro-payments via iTunes accounts, so there may come a time when its possible to use your iPhone to make a purchase in a retail store and have your credit card charged via your iTunes account. There are still some improvements in usability to be made before using a phone will be easier than swiping a credit card, but its already better than fussing with cash.

• Reclaim Vertical UI Space by Adding a Toolbar to the Left or Right Side of Firefox

  Do you need to make the most efficient use possible of vertical UI space on your system’s screen, but have horizontal space to spare? Now you can shift the toolbar icons and their awesome functionality to a slim sidebar in Firefox using the Vertical Toolbar extension. As you can see above the sidebar even picked up on our Personas Theme to help it blend in nicely with the rest of the browser. You can access the options for the new toolbar by right clicking within the toolbar area. These are the options for the toolbar…you can choose the side of Firefox that works best for toolbar placement, adjust display, hiding, & animation settings, define how the buttons display, and add/remove additional buttons as desired.
