• Weblogic is slow to start (11mins) under VM (VirtualBox and VMware)

  (SOLVED! BY FAKING SYSTEM RANDOM GENERATOR, SEE BELOW) I'm setting up a VM image for my dev/build team. Inside that VM a Weblogic domain should be running. I use Ububtu server distro, WLS 9.2MP3 + ALSB. Everything works OK, quite fast, but at the start time the WLS stops twice for a measurable amounts of time. Two stops in total amount to about 10 minutes delay. For tasks where deployment requires server restart it's very annoying. :-( Sleeping time is not constant, sometimes the server starts very fast, sometimes so-so, sometimes 10 minutes or more. Interesting that if I press Enter while looking at the stopped server, it wakes up much faster, sometimes after a few seconds. WLST (Weblogic Jython shell) is also hanging for quite a time when executed in VM. It doesn't react to Enter though. Here must be some developers who run WLS with a VM. I wonder if others have the same problem? Was someone able to solve it?   Google Talk video chat only works in Gmail (because that makes sense, right?); however, other IM apps (I'm using Empathy specifically) support video chat over Google Talk. But can you use video chat outside your 'client'? Can someone on Gmail video chat with someone on Empathy? I'm having problems doing that, and suspect it may because of an older (but certainly not that old) version of Empathy. But before I start troubleshooting I just wanted to make sure ti's possible. Because I believe at one time, it wasn't - correct?

• "Input not Supported" on external monitor

  when it rains, it pours! Im helping a friend with his Dell Inspiron 1520. The hdd crashed and and top of that, the screen is cracked. I've replaced the hdd (SATA-5400), but the lcd replacement is only comin in a months time. I've tried to: hook the laptop up to an Acer 18.5" lcd monitor via VGA, boot up into Windows 7 installer, get to the Step-1 screen, Switch to external display (Function-F8) ...and get the "Input not supported" message on the Acer lcd. I know that this is a resolution problem, but cant for the life of me figure out how to solve this. I've also tried, hooking it up to my TV via Composite cables (got a VGA-Composite adaptor). Please could someone advise me what to do? -Thank u!

  hi there, Im used to using windows server 2003 but decided to get a Vista web edition for IIS7 and to run our MVC applications on. I have installed copSSH that i use for SFTP, and when i upload my files i am unable to change persmissions or take ownership or anything when logged in as an administrator. when i try to go to permissions i get: The permissions on uploads are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective. and all permissions are the grayed out. i have tried to use icacls to reset ownership and also tried to give myself full control through icacls however all attempts are met with a access is denied message and failed processing 669 files. all i wish to do is set up write and delete permissions on an upload folder for a CMS systems admin area, but i am a week into looking into this and i am still no wiser. Please could someone give some sound advice so i can get this running smooth thanks p.s i have added the copSSH notes as i think that when i SFTP the files to the server, this may somehow have some involvement in messing up permissions

• Refresh QTextEdit in PyQt

  Hi all, Im writing a PyQt app that takes some input in one widget, and then processes some text files. What ive got at the moment is when the user clicks the "process" button a seperate window with a QTextEdit in it pops up, and ouputs some logging messages. On Mac OS X this window is refreshed automatically and you cna see the process. On Windows, the window reports (Not Responding) and then once all the proccessing is done, the log output is shown. Im assuming I need to refresh the window after each write into the log, and ive had a look around at using a timer. etc, but havnt had much luck in getting it working. Below is the source code. It has two files, GUI.py which does all the GUI stuff and MOVtoMXF that does all the processing. • Unix LVM: how to resize root lvm

  I took over a virtual server at work after a co-worker left. He, however, setup the server incorrectly at multiple stages and im cleaning them up as I run into them... Currently I realized that the file system is broken in half onto 2 logical volumes both at 50gb. One is mounted as the root directory and the other as the /home directory. Saddly, the server has taken up 46gb of the root lv and i need to expand it. I have already shrunk and remounted the home lv. I resized the root lv, but I can't figure out how to unmount the root directory while the computer is on. Obviously this needs to be done before I can finalize the expansion, but I don't know how. I'd appreciate any help or pointing in the right direction. Thanks in advance. PS this is on a CentOS server.

• Is it a bad idea to run an asp.net app pool with the same identity as IIS's anon user?

  Subject says it all really, Thinking on security terms, I want to give each site on my server its own user account, so that they can't access each other's data. I also want to use integrated authentication for sql so i dont have any passwords knocking about in connection strings. Is it a bad idea to use the same account for the app pool identity and the anon user account for iis (im interested in answers for both v6 and 7)? Edit: ive seen this post describing how IIS7 allows you to automatically use the same account, but the question of whether its a good idea or not remains ;) If so, why? Thanks

• using squid for apache?

  so i have set up apache serving my php pages. i read about squid but don't understand why/how i should use it to speed up my web server. from what i've learned squid is located in same network (or another) and caches content requested by the web browsers, and then when another web browser wants a same page, squid returns that page cached locally, so it never sends a request to the apache server (faster response time for the client, and reduced load for the server). so it seems that squid is for the client side (web browser), and has nothing to do with the server side (apache). but then some people tell others how they have speeded up apache using squid. so im confused. could squid be used on the server side too? and how will it work?

• vista server 2008 web edition cant change permissions

  hi there, Im used to using windows server 2003 but decided to get a Vista web edition for IIS7 and to run our MVC applications on. I have installed copSSH that i use for SFTP, and when i upload my files i am unable to change persmissions or take ownership or anything when logged in as an administrator. when i try to go to permissions i get: The permissions on uploads are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective. and all permissions are the grayed out. i have tried to use icacls to reset ownership and also tried to give myself full control through icacls however all attempts are met with a access is denied message and failed processing 669 files. all i wish to do is set up write and delete permissions on an upload folder for a CMS systems admin area, but i am a week into looking into this and i am still no wiser. Please could someone give some sound advice so i can get this running smooth thanks p.s i have added the copSSH notes as i think that when i SFTP the files to the server, this may somehow have some involvement in messing up permissions

Ive done this before (as I have another physical folder with r/w for WMSvc) but I have forgotten how I did it! When I go to the physical folder Security Tab Edit Add Object Name = WMSvc Check Names, I get 'An object named WMSvc cannot be found'?? I have the 'WMSvc' object listed fine in the 'Groups or usernames' on the other Folder I mentioned above. I feel a bit daft, what am I doing wrong, how can give folder permissions to WMSvc object on a physical folder?

  Im setting up a combined website and extranet currently, they both read from the same database on the same server as the site is hosted on. The reason being that the website is fed from the data that the staff plug into the extranet interface. it also links in to AD for authorising access to the extranet. I have the extranet in a folder within the website folder. What I want to do is only allow the extranet to be accessed from computers within our LAN, but allow the main website to be freely accessible to internet users. I have it set up as a generic web server currently, so anyone can view anything (well up to the point where the user is asked to log into the extranet of course! I have read a lot on this but nothing I read applies to, or works in IIS7.5

• Snort: not logging anything

  My site seems to be the target of quite a bit of probing over the last few months. In an attempt to get a better handle on this I installed SNORT on one of the machines that has external exposure. Something must not be installed correctly as I see lots of probing in /var/log/messages but snort isn't logging anything. System: CentOS 6.2 (32 bit) Snort: (latest build and rules) Snort configured from this v excellent site: http://nachum234.no-ip.org/security/snort/001-snort-installation-on-centos-6-2/ snort running as daemon: /usr/local/bin/snort -d -D -i bond0 -u snort -g snort -c /etc/snort.d/snort.conf -l /var/log/snort The snort.log file is empty despite hundreds (or more) failed login attempts from individual IP addresses. Maybe Im missing the purpose of SNORT? I was hoping it would log this sort of info.
