  I have two web applications. Both of yhem use oracle.ucp.UniversalConnectionPool.   For reasons beyond my control, I'm being tasked with Ruby web development that does NOT use Rails or really any other heavyweight framework such as Merb. I'm wondering if anybody else has encountered this and can recommend best practices or resources that describe best practices for such a problem. I'd like to avoid the dreaded out.print('<td class="foo">'+some_data+'</td>') style of web development. A coworker has suggested Rack as a light framework but the documentation is sketchy and it seems unproven in the market.

• Trying to find a good strategy using Git for personal development on local/personal machine

  A noob here. I have a personal Macbook and I want to use Git to track the changes etc. I want to just init a repo on my macbook and work there. Is this a good idea? What if: I have a main repo somewhere in my Macbook HD, like, /Users/user/projects/project1 and clone it to another area on my macbook where I actually perform development? But there is a lot of redundancy in this. I am a little confused and want to know what are the usual steps folks take in a similar personal development environment. Thanks a lot.

  I created an element with an input value of type "Day" , when i write a formula i get this error. Any idea what's wrong? APP-FF-33232: EATC_EXTRA_DAYS_ENTRY_EFFECTIVE_DATE_ENTRY_VALUE has null or not found allowed, but no default set specified. Cause: If a Database Item has null allowed, or not found allowed, then the item must also specify a default set to be used to provide default values in the event of these occurring.   I'm having problems installing development machine for Sharepoint (Foundation) 2010. This is what I did so far on the same machine: Installed a clean Windows 7 x64 with 4GB of RAM without being part of any domain. Just a simple standalone machine. Enabled IIS related features as described here except IIS6 related ones (two of them) Installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Development Edition (DB Engine and Writer being enabled but not SQL Agent) Installed Visual Studio 2010 Premium Started installing Sharepoint Foundation 2010 with first extracting files, changing config to enable Windows 7 installation and then installed it as Server Farm (then Complete) to avoid installing SQL Express. Created a separate SPF_CONFIG local user with Logon on as a service right. Opened SPF Management Shell and run New-SPConfigurationDatabase so I am able to use a non-domain username (SPF_CONFIG that I created in the previous step) But all I get is this: The outcome after this error is: Database Sharepoint2010Config is created User SPF_CONFIG is added to SQL Server and attached to this newly created database as dbowner and checking SQL server security logins this user has following rights: dbcreator securityadmin public

• Using Linux vs Windows for development

  On my servers I run everything on Linux/ Apache, but for offline preparation before upload of the projects I'm using Windows (Vista) with a local Apache/ WAMP, PHP, Python, GD_image installation and so on. My question, would it be much easier in terms of setting up a good environment if I were to use Linux, e.g. Ubuntu distribution, as development OS for these things? Would you know some pros and cons when it comes to Windows vs Linux in terms of web development? (As I'm using mostly web apps these days, switching the OS might be less of a problem. I would need a good replacement for my image editor, though, as I prefer Corel PhotoPaint and PSP4 over Gimp, last time I tried.)

  I have been developing a new JavaScript application which is rapidly growing in size. This technique has worked marvelously for me - as it has created only one global footprint in the DOM and has given me a very flexible framework to grow each additional feature of the application. However - I am reaching the point where I'd really rather not keep this entire application inside one JavaScript file. I'd like to move from having one large uniqueApplication.js file during development to having a separate file for each feature in the application, featureOne.js - featureTwo.js - featureThree.js Once I have completed offline development testing, I would then like to use something, perhaps Google Closure Compiler, to combine all of these files together - however I want these files to all be compiled inside of that scope, as they are when I have them inside one file - and I would like for them to remain in the same scope during offline testing too. I see that Google Closure Compiler supports an argument for passing in modules but I haven't really been able to find a whole lot of information on doing something like this. Anybody have any idea how this could be accomplished - or any suggestions on a development practice for writing a single JavaScript Library across multiple files that still only leaves one footprint on the DOM?

• How does Alpha Five Version 10 Rate for Web App Development

  I came across this RDMS via the advert on stackoverflow. Seems to be in the vein of MS Access / Filemaker / Apex database development tools but focused on web based applications. It quotes rave reviews from EWeek and a favourable mention from Dr Dobbs regarding its ability to create AJAX web applications without coding. The Eweek review, apparently written by an ASP.NET programmer, goes on to proclaim the ease at which apps can be extended using the inbuilt XBasic language and how custom javascript can easily be added without wading through code. Has anyone here built a web app with Alpha 5? Does anyone have comments on the development process, the speed of it or limitations they encountered along the way? To me it seems Oracle APEX comes closest to the feature set, has anyone programmed in both and have any comments?

  I have to admit that "workflows" are not my strong side so here is what the problem is: we have active workflow that initiates when someone changes document of type X, the problem is that it is not initiated when someone try yo delete a revision. • Switching to Linux for Windows development, bad idea?

  I was contemplating switching to Linux for C++ development, coming from a Windows environment. Is this a bad idea? My workplace uses Windows and Visual Studio for our projects (some C# and java too, but right now I'm only developing in C++). If they decide to put me on a C# project, would development still possible (mono?)? What are the difficulties in this sort of transition? Would I have a problem working on their projects and vice versa? I read somewhere that there'd be problems with precompiled headers and such (we do use them), and encodings (tabs/spaces, line endings, etc).. If it's not too hard to do this switch, how do I get started? IDE? vim+make? Thanks. By the way, we make MOSTLY windows software.. EDIT: Thanks guys, I guess that makes sense..

The most prominent seems to be Seaside but there is also AIDA/Web and Iliad. They seems to be very similiar, but this impresson may be wrong. I wonder who has tried the different tools and can share the pros/cons of the different packages.   I am a frequent Windows Mobile application developer in need of a new development laptop. I am considering a MacBook or Macbook Pro running either Fusion from VMWare or Parallels Desktop. This will give me the option to port my applications to the iPhone depending on what MS does with WM 6.5 and 7. Has anybody tried doing Windows Mobile development using Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center (or ActiveSync) and VS2008 on the MacBook Pro using one of these virtual machines? Does the device emulator work properly? What about debugging a Windows Mobile device over a USB cable? In general, do most USB drivers (non HID) designed for Windows work under these virtual machines? Thanks.

• Avoid implicit conversion from date to timestamp for selects with Oracle using Hibernate

  I'm using Hibernate 3.2.7.GA criteria queries to select rows from an Oracle Enterprise Edition 10.2.0.4.0 database, filtering by a timestamp field. The field in question is of type java.util.Date in Java, and DATE in Oracle. It turns out that the field gets mapped to java.sql.Timestamp, and Oracle converts all rows to TIMESTAMP before comparing to the passed in value, bypassing the index and thereby ruining performance. One solution would be to use Hibernate's sqlRestriction() along with Oracle's TO_DATE function. That would fix performance, but requires rewriting the application code (lots of queries). So is there a more elegant solution? Since Hibernate already does type mapping, could it be configured to do the right thing? Update: The problem occurs in a variety of configurations, but here's one specific example: Oracle Enterprise Edition 10.2.0.4.0 Oracle JDBC Driver 11.1.0.7.0 Hibernate 3.2.7.GA Hibernate's Oracle10gDialect Java 1.6.0_16

• Super user powers in development environment?

  Is it too much to ask for when I ask the IT department to give my development team an environment where we can use whatever software that we can download without having to have security check those tools? Of course, the software can be checked by security before deploying to Test, and the development environment can be on a VLAN that is not accessible from outside. This would greatly aid us by allowing us to use whatever open-source testing tools that we want. I'm asking because we have such tight restrictions on the software approval process, and I hear of other teams that have an environment where they can configure their local server however they want and they can use whatever tools they want. What's the norm out there? Thank you for any comments!

  I am a hacker not and not a full-time programmer but am looking to start my own full application development experiment. I apologize if I am missing something easy here. I am looking for recommendations for books, articles, sites, etc for learning more about test driven development specifically compatible with or aimed at Python web application programming. I understand that Python has built-in tools to assist. What would be the best way to learn about these outside of RTFM? I have searched on StackOverflow and found the Kent Beck's and David Astels book on the subject. I have also bookmarked the Wikipedia article as it has many of these types of resources. Are there any particular ones you would recommend for this language/application?

• Linq to Entities performance within ASP.NET Development Server

  I've been evaluating linq to entities and linq to SQL for a project. Obviously each has its own advantages and disadvantages which have been discussed plenty of times here. However, One thing I am seeing with L2E is kind of odd. Using L2S, when using the ASP.NET Development Server, the performance is a little slower for my web service calls. I'm looking at 300ms vs. 250 ms. However, when using L2E, when using ASP.NET Dev Server, the performance is awful. I'm talking 1,250 ms vs. 220 ms. I know I should probably just use local IIS for development, but I'm curious if anyone else has seen this, or knows what is causing it.

  I really combed this site and others. I read and re-read the related links here and the Apple docs. I'm sorry, but either I am obviously missing something right under my nose, or this Apple profile/certificate stuff is a bit convoluted. Here it is: I have a product in the App Store. I have updated it several times and users like it. My development profile recently expired just when I was improving the app for its next release. I can run the app in the simulator. I can compile and put the distribution build on my iPhone just fine. I went to the Apple portal and renewed the development profile. I downloaded it and installed it in Xcode. I see it in the Organize window. I see it on my iPhone. I CANNOT put the debug build on my iPhone to debug or run with Instruments. The message is that either there is not a valid signed profile or it is untrusted. I subsequently tried to download and install the certificate to my Mac's keychain. Still no success. I checked the code signing section of Project settings and also for the target and the root. All appears to indicate that it is using the expected development profile for debug. Yes, I had deleted the old profile from my iPhone, from the Organizer. I cleaned the Xcode cache and all targets. I have done all of this several times and in varying sequences to try to cover every possibility. I am ready to do anything to be able to debug with Instruments in order to check for leaks or high memory usage. Even though the distribution compile runs fine on my iPhone and plays well with other running processes, I will not release anything without a leaks/memory test. Any ideas will be appreciated. If I missed something obvious, please forgive me - it was not due to just posting a question without searching for similar postings. Thanks!

• What patterns exist for web application development?

  I understand that MVC & MVP are design patterns that are commonly used for web development, as well as ASP.NET WebForms (more of an anti-pattern, really!). What other patterns are used in web application development? I'm not necessarily saying I want to learn/use new patterns just to be different - I do believe there's a lot of value in taking the conventional route - but I think it's good to know what else is out there to be able to properly understand what I'm currently working with.
