• Swing layout with miglayout and nested panels

  I have a Swing program using SwingLayout. The structure of the Swing components looks like this. JFrame JPanel (Cardlayout) JPanel (Miglayout) - Main panel Jpanel (Flowlayout) - Checkbox Panel JPanel (Flowlayout) - Option Panel My problem right now is that I'm not sure how to prevent the checkbox panel from growing. I don't want it to "push" out the column that it's in to the right. I want Wraplayout (which works fine on the option panel) to wrap the content of the checkbox panel when it grows too big. This is the view of it from the Windowsbuilder GUI inside of Eclipse. The panel with the label "sites" in it is the Checkbox Panel. Directly to the right of the Checkbox panel is the Option panel. The big panel containing both of them is the main panel. http://i.imgur.com/S7Njo.png This is what happens when I add too many checkboxes http://i.imgur.com/f2SZz.png My main problem is that I don't understand why setting "grow 0" on the column constraint for the first column in mainpanel doesn't prevent it from growing when the component inside gets too big as I add new checkboxes to the site panel (the site panel can have an arbitrary number of checkboxes). This is my miglayout for the main panel. mainPanel.setLayout(new MigLayout("", "[][grow]", "[][][][][][][][grow]")); Here are my component constraints for when I add the checkbox panel siteCheckBoxPanel = new JPanel(); mainPanel.add(siteCheckBoxPanel, "cell 0 0,alignx left,gapx 0px,aligny center"); siteCheckBoxPanel.setLayout(new FlowLayout(FlowLayout.CENTER, 5, 5)); I've also tried it without flow layout, and that doesn't fix anything. Any insight you could provide would be great! I'm also happy to provide more information if people have questions. FYI I've also tried "grow 0" on both the column and row constraint for the cell that the Checkbox Panel is inside.

• TRibbon's large button's image is not centered...any ideas? easy to demonstrate at design-time.

• Find unique vertices from a 'triangle-soup'

  I am building a CAD-file converter on top of two libraries (Opencascade and DWF Toolkit). However, my question is plattform agnostic: Given: I have generated a mesh as a list of triangular faces form a model constructed through my application. Each Triangle is defined through three vertexes, which consist of three floats (x, y & z coordinate). Since the triangles form a mesh, most of the vertices are shared by more then one triangle. Goal: I need to find the list of unique vertices, and to generate an array of faces consisting of tuples of three indices in this list. What i want to do is this: //step 1: build a list of unique vertices for each triangle for each vertex in triangle if not vertex in listOfVertices Add vertex to listOfVertices //step 2: build a list of faces for each triangle for each vertex in triangle Get Vertex Index From listOfvertices AddToMap(vertex Index, triangle) While I do have an implementation which does this, step1 (the generation of the list of unique vertices) is really slow in the order of O(n!), since each vertex is compared to all vertices already in the list. I thought "Hey, lets build a hashmap of my vertices' components using std::map, that ought to speed things up!", only to find that generating a unique key from three floating point values is not a trivial task. Here, the experts of stackoverflow come into play: I need some kind of hash-function which works on 3 floats, or any other function generating a unique value from a 3d-vertex position.

• How do I create a UISplitView manually?

I was going to just implement these protocols in my MyDayController, is this sort of standard? So, after the code above, I get an error: -[UIViewController _loadViewFromNibNamed:bundle:] loaded the "MyDay" nib but the view outlet was not set. so, how can I fix it using the UISplitViewController? I know that the UISplitViewController has a view property, but I cannot use it/connect it up in IB can I? Thanks a lot Mark

• Date since 1600 to NSDate?

  I have a date that's stored as a number of days since January 1, 1600 that I need to deal with. This is a legacy date format that I need to read many, many times in my application. Previously, I'd been creating a calendar, empty date components and root date like this: self.gregorian = [[[NSCalendar alloc] initWithCalendarIdentifier: NSGregorianCalendar ] autorelease]; id rootComponents = [[[NSDateComponents alloc] init] autorelease]; [rootComponents setYear: 1600]; [rootComponents setMonth: 1]; [rootComponents setDay: 1]; self.rootDate = [gregorian dateFromComponents: rootComponents]; self.offset = [[[NSDateComponents alloc] init] autorelease]; Then, to convert the integer later to a date, I use this: [offset setDay: theLegacyDate]; id eventDate = [gregorian dateByAddingComponents: offset toDate: rootDate options: 0]; (I never change any values in offset anywhere else.) The problem is I'm getting a different time for rootDate on iOS vs. Mac OS X. On Mac OS X, I'm getting midnight. On iOS, I'm getting 8:12:28. (So far, it seems to be consistent about this.) When I add my number of days later, the weird time stays. Why the weird time on iOS, and what should I do about it? (I'm assuming the hour difference is DST.) I've tried setting the hour, minute and second of rootComponents to 0. This has no impact. If I set them to something other than 0, it adds them to 8:12:28. I've been wondering if this has something to do with leap seconds or other cumulative clock changes. Or is this entirely the wrong approach to use on iOS?

• Upgrade to Delphi 2010, or stick with Delphi 7 "forever"?

  I am an individual user of Delphi, starting back in the early Turbo Pascal days. I have quite a bit of code developed over the years, but I have never sold software commercially or used it for business. Historically, Borland supported the non-professional users with lower cost versions, but Embarcadero does not. As I consider upgrading to Delphi 2010, I am put off by the high price. Embarcadero is also trying to "encourage" upgrading by threatening to charge "new user" prices for upgrades after Dec 31st. I have several questions for the community to help me decide whether to upgrade. 1) I have read about difficulties updating existing code to support the unicode string types. I have no need for unicode strings, and I am happy with the string support in D7. Will I have to modify existing code and components just to re-compile under D2010? Or are there compiler options to allow backward compatibility if new string types are not required? 2) The main reason I'm considering upgrading is for IDE improvements, and to get access to new APIs added to Windows since 2002. Are there any Windows 7 APIs or capabilities that would be impossible to support from my programs compiled using using Delphi 7 (assuming appropriate JEDI API libraries, for example)? 3) Is there anything else about Delphi 2010 that is really compelling for someone who is primarily interested in Win32 apps, and not working with databases? I have read that D2010 is slow to load, and other versions between D7 and D2010 have had stability issues, and the help system was "broken". What is the biggest benefit to D2010?

• Android Custom View Constructor

  I'm learning about using Custom Views from the following: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/custom-components.html#modifying The description says: Class Initialization As always, the super is called first. Furthermore, this is not a default constructor, but a parameterized one. The EditText is created with these parameters when it is inflated from an XML layout file, thus, our constructor needs to both take them and pass them to the superclass constructor as well. Is there a better description? I've been trying to figure out what the constructor(s) should look like and I've come up with 4 possible choices (see example at end of post). I'm not sure what these 4 choices do (or don't do), why I should implement them, or what the parameters mean. Is there a description of these? Thanks. • Flex: Double click event propagation on datagrid dependent on component order?

  I'd like to have a double click event on a datagrid in Flex3. The following example only works if the Accordion (id = "mustBeSecond") container comes after the DataGrid. Why is the order of the components important and what can I do to prevent this behavior? (The example does not work. • Group testNG tests without annotations

  Hi gents and ladies, I'm responsible for allowing unit tests for one of ETL components.I want to acomplish this using testNG with generic java test class and number of test definitions in testng.xmlpassing various parameters to the class.Oracle and ETL guys should be able to add new tests without changing the java code, so we need to use xml suite file instead of annotations. Question Is there a way to group tests in testng.xml?(similarly to how it is done with annotations) I mean something like <group name="first_group"> <test> <class ...> <parameter ...> </test> </group> <group name="second_group"> <test> <class ...> <parameter ...> </test> </group> I've checked the testng.dtd as figured out that similar syntax is not allowed.But is therea workaround to allow grouping? • Draw a column graph with no space between columns

  I am using the WPF toolkit, and am trying to render a graph that looks like a histogram. In particular, I want each column to be right up against each other column. There should be no gaps between columns. There are a number of components that you apply when creating a column graph. (See example XAML below).   I've been trying to get the Zend Jquery autocomplete function working, when i noticed this section in the Zend documentation. The following UI widgets are available as form view helpers. Make sure you use the correct version of jQuery UI library to be able to use them. The Google CDN only offers jQuery UI up to version 1.5.2. Some other components are only available from jQuery UI SVN, since they have been removed from the announced 1.6 release. autoComplete($id, $value, $params, $attribs): The AutoComplete View helper will be included in a future jQuery UI version (currently only via jQuery SVN) and creates a text field and registeres it to have auto complete functionality. The completion data source has to be given as jQuery related parameters 'url' or 'data' as described in the jQuery UI manual. Does anybody know which svn url tag or branch i need to download to get a javascript file with the autocomplete functions available in it? • Newbie question about Java

  Okay, I know that Java is a language but somebody has asked me if they can write a web application to interface in with a web app I've written in ASP.NET. I'm implementing a web service to serve up an XML so it's pretty language agnostic. However, I'm not 100% sure whether going down the Java route makes a lot of sense. I was kind of expecting PHP or ASP.NET server side code with maybe some Ajax/JavaScript or maybe a heavier client JavaScript program using JScript. Could some kind sole explain the basic Java environment when it comes with webapps. I've inferred the following - am I barking up the right tree? Java when run like ASP.NET is called JSP JavaBeans is a bit like the .NET framework, i.e. it's a library of re-usable components Java EE is a bit like ASP.NET in that it's a framework for building web pages on a server Java can also run on the client but it needs the Java VM installing When running Java on the client, can you use JavaBeans and is there a framework? Can it also use JScript? I don't think so as JScript is JavaScript library. Whilst running Java on the server would be okay, this is a relatively small application and therefore Java sounds like a bit of overkill. PHP or ASP.NET feels a better fit. But I don't think they should go down the Java applet in the browser and it adds complexity that's not needed. Thanks, Rob.

• Exporting non-public type through public API

  What if I have few factory methods returning non-public type and pairing set of methods which gives variables of this non-public type? This results with titled warning message in NetBeans. In result public API will contain only two pairing sets of methods. The reason is to make my type hierarchy sealed (like seald classes in Scala) and allow users only instantiate these types through factory methods. So we get DSL in some sense. For example, Schedule class represented by calendar fields' contraints. There are some types of contraints - Range, Singleton, List, FullSet - with NumberSet interface as a root. We don't want to expose these types and how Schedule interact with them. We just want the specification from the user. So we make NumberSet package-private. In class Schedule we create few factory-methods for constraints: NumberSet singleton(int value); NumberSet range(int form, int to); NumberSet list(NumberSet ... components); and some methods for creating Schedule object: Schedule everyHour(NumberSet minutes); Schedule everyDay(NumberSet minutes, NumberSet hours); User can only use them in the manner: Schedule s = Schedule.everyDay( singleton(0), list(range(10-15), singleton(8)) ); Is it bad idea?

• Maintaining a Python web application: heavier vs lighter framework?

  Five+ years from now, you are hired to support and extend a data-centric web application written in Python that hasn't been kept up to date. Would you rather prefer it was written in the current version of Django/Pylons at the time, using the available standard components, or kept minimal with something like CherryPy/web.py and a few library dependencies? Heavy framework Advantages: standard approach to application design and structure, as encouraged by framework; less application code to worry about. Disadvantages: requires learning the framework to understand how things work; broken things in old version of framework difficult to fix; upgrading to new version potentially difficult due to changing APIs; finding relevant documentation/help potentially difficult due to changing APIs. Light framework Advantages: most application code is directly "visible"; only needed features are implemented; architecture should be simpler to understand; less need to upgrade external dependencies; easier to upgrade external dependencies. Disadvantages: some reinventing the wheel; non-standard design and structure (with the associated unique issues and bugs). I will update the list with any helpful answers.

• Lucene complex structure search

  Basically I do have pretty simple database that I'd like to index with Lucene. Domains are: // Person domain class Person { Set<Pair> keys; } // Pair domain class Pair { KeyItem keyItem; String value; } // KeyItem domain, name is unique field within the DB (!!) class KeyItem{ String name; } I've tens of millions of profiles and hundreds of millions of Pairs, however, since most of KeyItem's "name" fields duplicates, there are only few dozens KeyItem instances. Came up to that structure to save on KeyItem instances. Basically any Profile with any fields could be saved into that structure. Lets say we've profile with properties - name: Andrew Morton - eduction: University of New South Wales, - country: Australia, - occupation: Linux programmer. To store it, we'll have single Profile instance, 4 KeyItem instances: name, education,country and occupation, and 4 Pair instances with values: "Andrew Morton", "University of New South Wales", "Australia" and "Linux Programmer". All other profile will reference (all or some) same instances of KeyItem: name, education, country and occupation. My question is, how to index all of that so I can search for Profile for some particular values of KeyItem::name and Pair::value. Ideally I'd like that kind of query to work: name:Andrew* AND occupation:Linux* Should I create custom Indexer and Searcher? Or I could use standard ones and just map KeyItem and Pair as Lucene components somehow?

• Automation Error upon running VBA script in Excel

  Hi guys, I'm getting an Automation error upon running VBA code in Excel 2007. I'm attempting to connect to a remote SQL Server DB and load data to from Excel to SQL Server. The error I get is, "Run-time error '-2147217843(80040e4d)': Automation error". I checked out the MSDN site and it suggested that this may be due to a bug associated with the sqloledb provider and one way to mitigate this is to use ODBC. Well I changed the connection string to reflect ODBC provider and associated parameters and I'm still getting the same error.   I want to track the mouse click events on a set of UI components on a set of pages. To do this, I am using the following jquery/ajax call(trimmed out u): 1.Ajax call which will add the click logging. myClickLogger = { endpoint: '/path/to/my/logging/endpoint.html', logClickEvent: function(clickCode) { $.ajax({ 'type': 'POST', 'url': this.endpoint, 'async': true, 'cache': false, 'global': false, 'data': { 'clickCode':clickCode }, 'error': function(xhr,status,err){ alert("DEBUG: status"+status+" \nError:"+err); }, 'success': function(data){ if(data.status!=200){ alert("Error occured!"); } } }); } }; 2.JQuery click event which will call the ajax logger(the clickCode is an identifier for which button/image was clicked): $(document).ready(function() { $(".myClickEvent[clickName]").click(function() { var clickCode = $(this).attr("clickName"); myClickLogger.logClickEvent(clickCode); }); }); The above ajax call(1.) is "canceled" by browser whenever the button click being tracked takes to a new page. If I change 'aysnc' to 'false', then the ajax call succeeds. Also, click events which do not take to a new page succeed. Only the click events taking to new page are being canceled. I do not want to make the call synchronous. Any ideas, what could be the issue? How can I guarantee that the asynchronous call before is finished when the click event takes to a new page?

  I am currently working on an application that allows reverse geocoding using silverlight + bing maps. • Scaling Literate Programming?

  Greetings. I have been looking at Literate Programming a bit now, and I do like the idea behind it: you basically write a little paper about your code and write down as much of the design decisions, the code probably surrounding the module, the inner workins of the module, assumptions and conclusions resulting from the design decisions, potential extension, all this can be written down in a nice way using tex. Granted, the first point: it is documentation. It must be kept up-to-date, but that should not be that bad, because your change should have a justification and you can write that down. However, how does Literate Programming Scale to a larger degree? Overall, Literate Programming is still just text. Very human readable text, of course, but still text, and thus, it is hard to follow large systems. For example, I reworked large parts of my compiler to use and some magic to chain compile steps together, because some "x.register_follower(y); y.register_follower(z); y.register_follower(a);..." got really unwieldy, and changing that to x y z a made it a bit better, even though this is at its breaking point, too. So, how does Literate Programming scale to larger systems? Does anyone try to do that? My thought would be to use LP to specify components that communicate with each other using event streams and chain all of these together using a subset of graphviz. This would be a fairly natural extension to LP, as you can extract a documentation -- a dataflow diagram -- from the net and also generate code from it really well. • Repackaging Jasper-Reports into an application specific OSGi bundle, legal or not?

  Hi, I wanted to ask (probably a silly) question regarding the packaging of existing open-source components as OSGi bundles (more specifically Jasper Reports). I have an application that I am converting from a monolithic jar-hell type architecture to something more moduler and OSGi is my weapon of choice. There are various modules I have in mind but one of the modules is a reporting module. My own reporting module will be a jar file containing my code that should reference a Jasper Reports bundle. Trouble is, Jasper reports depends on far far too many libraries and is quite monolithic in its own right. I therefore wish to build my own Jasper Reports bundle but this is where I start getting confused about the legality of repackaging. I don't plan to re-compile but I do plan to re-bundle removing known items that I do not require. Can anyone offer advice on whether I am permitted to repackage (not recompile or extend) open-source libraries into OSGi bundles without falling foul of 'derivative works' clause of LGPL? I noticed that Groovy seems to offer some monolithic jars that include all dependancies and actually goes so far as to re-arrange the packages of its dependancies so that there are no namespace conflicts. This seems to me to be a violation of the license but if anyone can reassure me that this is legal then I would feel safer about my less intrusive custom-bundling of Jasper reports. • Routing audio from GSM module to a Bluetooth HandsFree device

  I have a system with the following setup: I use: Windows CE 6 R3 Microsoft's Bluetooth stack including all profiles Motorola H500 The Audio Gateway service is up and running (checked through services list in cmd) GSM Module is functional - I am able to set outgoing calls and to answer calls. Bluetooth is functional - the A2DP profile plays music to Motorola headphones (can't remember the model right now) I want to hold a conversation using a headset device. I have included all Bluetooth components in the catalog. I pair the device using the Control Panel applet. When I press the button on the Motorla device to answer a call I get a print by the Audio Gateway: BTAGSVC: ConnectionEvent. BTAGSVC: SCOListenThread_Int - Connection Event. BTAGSVC: ConnectionEvent. BTAGSVC: SCOListenThread_Int - Connection Event. BTAGSVC: ConnectionEvent. BTAGSVC: A Bluetooth peer device has connected to the Audio Gateway. BTAGSVC: Could not open registry key for BT Addr: 2. BTAGSVC: The peer device was not accepted since the user has never confirmed it as a device to be used. So my questions are as follows: What do I need to do to pair the device with the Audio Gateway? Once my device is paired, do I need to set anything else up? (except for the GSM module of course)

• Graph navigation problem

  I have graph of components and relation between them. User open graph and want to navigate through the graph base on his choice. He start with root node and click expand button which reveal new component that is related to current component. The problem is with when use decide to collapse a node. I have to choose a sub-tree to hide and at same time leave graph in consistent state so that there is no expanded node with missing relation to another node in graph. Now in case of cyclic/loop between component i have difficult of choosing sub-tree. For simplicity i choose the order in which they were expanded. So if a A expand into B and C collapse A will hide the nodes and edge that it has created. Now consider flowing scenario. [-] mean expanded state and [+] mean not yet expanded. A is expanded to reveal B and C. And then B is expanded to reveal D. C is expanded which create a link between C and exiting node D and also create node E. Now user decide to collapse B. Since by order of expansion D is child of B it will collapse and hide D. This leave graph in inconsistent state as C is expanded with edge to D but D is not anymore there if i remove CD edge it will still be inconsistent. If i collapse C. And E is again a cyclic link e.g to B will produce the same problem. /-----B[-]-----\ A[-] D[+] \-----C[-]-----/ \ E[+] So guys any idea how can i solve this problem. User need to navigate through graph and should be able to collapse but i am stuck with problem of cyclic nodes in which case any of node in loop if collapse will leave graph in inconsistent state.

• How to explain to someone that a data structure should not draw itself, explaining separation of con

  I have another programmer who I'm trying to explain why it is that a UI component should not also be a data-structure. For instance say that you get a data-structure that contains a record-set from the "database", and you wish to display that record-set in a UI component within your application. According to this programmer (who will remain nameless, he's young and I'm teaching him...), we should subclass the data-structure into a class that will draw the UI component within our application!!!!!! And thus according to this logic, the record-set should manage the drawing of the UI. **Head Desk*** I know that asking a record-set to draw itself is wrong, because, if you wish to render the same data-structure on more than one type of component on your UI, you are going to have a real mess on your hands; you'll need to extend yet another class for each and every UI component that you render from the base-class of your record-set; I am well aware of the "cleanliness" of the of the MVC pattern (and by that what I really mean is you don't confuse your data (the Model) with your UI (the view) or the actions that take place on the data (the Controller more or less...okay not really the API should really handle that...and the Controller should just make as few calls to it as it can, telling it which view to render)) But it's certainly alot cleaner than using data-structures to render UI components! Is there any other advice I could send his way other than the example above? I understand that when you first learn OOP you go through "a stage" where you where just want to extend everything. Followed by a stage when you think that Design Patterns are the solution every single problem...which isn't entirely correct either...thanks Jeff. Is there a way that I can gently nudge this kid in the right direction? Do you have any more examples that might help explain my point to him?

That allows us to use arbitrary view methods as action handlers. The existing issue is that the input to the form, only displays on the console and not on jsfiddle result section, though no error displays on the result section, there is a new error appearing in the console of the updated fiddle: Uncaught Error: Cannot perform operations on a Metamorph that is not in the DOM. Finally solved I needed to comment out App.initialize() for it to work as expected. This the working fiddle ** http://jsfiddle.net/ACzaJ/20/. I don't know why that is so, but my guess is that, App.initialize works with other parts like the router for routing, ApplicationController and ApplicationView with {{outlet}} in the handlebars, which i didn't need for this fiddle. Finally Finally and completely solved This ** http://jsfiddle.net/tQWn8/ works with App.initialize. But you have to declare all those components above and pass the router to App.initialize, like this App..initialize(router). If you don't do this, then you will get the old error Uncaught Error: Cannot perform operations on a Metamorph that is not in the DOM.

• cakephp: Custom Authentication Object authenticate not called

  The method authenticate in a Custom Authentication Object is never called. Is this a glicth or am I missing something? It just skips the authenticate-method.
