• Testing harness for online teaching?

  I have been asked to teach an online programming course, and I am looking for a test harness especially geared to education. Some students will have significant coding experience, but others will be total newbies. The course is an introduction to software development, mostly taught in C with some C++ and Java thrown in. In any case, I would like to read their source code only after a test suite has made sure that it compiles and executes properly. The students will also benefit from having a tool they can check their code against before submitting it. However, the Learning Management System my employer is using doesn't have such a system. Do you know of any LMS software that includes this feature? Which testing harness would you recommend in case I have to roll my own?

• UrlEncoding-Safe Delimiter

  So the site I'm working on has a filter system that operates by passing a key and value system through a querystring. The whole site is going through a re-factor soon and I'm maintaining the existing site so before we discuss the RIGHT way to implement this, I just need ideas for changing my delimiter. The current format is like this: cf=<key>:<value> The problem is, I've recently run into an issue because some of our new values for this filter contain : in them. I.e: cf=MO_AspectRatio:16:10 The value is being UrlEncoded, but the browsers are de-coding %3a into : on the fly because the : doesn't inherently break the urls. I need some suggestions for url-safe delimiters that aren't :,-,_,&,? that makes sense. I'm not looking for a solution like () or something wild.

  I'm trying to clean my code to make it unit-testable. I know that unit tests must be created while coding but... I have to do it now, with code completed. My business class is full of methods with a similar implementation like: var rep=new NHrepository<ModelClass1>(Session); rep.Where(x=>x.Field1==1).ToList(); first error (from my point of view) is that I don't have to use "new" but instead use DI and add in the ctor parameters a INHrepository modelClass1Repository. If in my class I have two or more repository of different model class? Each must be in the ctor? Or probably business class is not build with SeparationOfConcern principle?

• TypeInitializationException When Getting an NHibernate Session

  I’ve run into what appears to be an NHibernate config problem. Basically, I ran up a simple proof of concept persistence integration test using NUnit, the test simply querys an Oracle database and successfully returns the last record received by the underlying table. However, when the assemblies are taken out of the NUnit test environment and deployed as they would be for an actual application build, my call for an NHibernate session results in a ‘TypeInitializationException’ whilst executing the code line: sessionFactory = New Configuration().Configure().BuildSessionFactory() The application is a vb.net console app running against an Oracle 9.2 database, using a ‘coding framework’ published on the web by Bill McCafferty entitled 'NHibernate Best Practices with ASP.NET' (pre S#harp Architecture).   Hi, I am facing trouble to set WrapText kind of facility in EditText. Problem: When i try tp enter data in EditText, it goes beyond the screen width (scrolling horizontally). • Access violation of member of pointer object

  So I am coding this client/server program. This code is from the client side. The client has an instance of an object mpqs_sieve *instance_; The reason I make it as a pointer is, that mpqs_sieve only has a constructor that takes 3 arguments, and I want to instantiate it at a later point in time. The client first gets some data from the server, and uses this to instantiate instance_. After this, it will request some more data, and upon receiving this (these are three coeffecients for a quadratic polynomial), it should set these in the instance_ object. However upon calling a member function of instance_, I get an access violation on one of the members of instance_ within that function call. I posted my code here: on pastebin, and I get the error on line 100. The call comes from line 71, and before that line 21. Any ideas to solve this? Thanks!

• Website looks weird in internet explorer 7, but fine in IE 6 and 8

  I used many different browsers while I was coding for a new site (Firefox, Chrome, IE8, Opera, Safari, Mobile devices, etc...). It looked the same across all browsers. I recently uploaded the site onto the server and got to look at it from work, using Internet Explorer 7 and It looks horrible. Elements are floating wild all over the place, but I cant figure out why. The weird thing is I just looked at it from IE6, and it looks fine, with the exception of unsupported transparencies in PNG's. If anybody has IE7, you can view the site here. Thanks

It would be helpful if the book covered: The software development process (requirements, design, coding, testing, maintenance) Testing roles (who performs each step in the process) Testing methods (white box and black box) Testing levels (unit testing, integration testing, etc) Testing process (Agile, waterfall, spiral) Testing tools (simulators, fixtures, and reporting software) Testing of embedded systems The goal here is to find an easy to read book that summarizes the best practices for ensuring software quality in an embedded system. It seems most texts cover the testing of application software where it is simpler to generate automated test cases or run a debugger. A book that provided solutions for improving quality in a system where the tests must be performed manually and therefore minimized would be ideal.

Like other portals, subscriber users should be able to create a topic, discuss topic, share information about them, and have the ability for notifications/alerts. The added feature, I would like to have is to moderate users.   Hello, I am coding a simple space empire management game in Visual C# 2008, which relies on connecting to a remote SQL server database to get/store data. I would like the user to be able to connect to a user-specified SQL server from the login screen(he specifies IP address, port, database name, ID, password and presses "connect" button). However, I found out that the Dataset connection string property is read only and cannot be changed. Is there any way to guide the wizard-generated DataSet to a user-specified server at run time? • File I/O OS handling

  This isn't a direct coding question but more of a OS handling mechanism. I was reading somebody's previous question regarding C# and file handling. Apparently C# was throwing an exception regarding a file being locked when trying to access this. So my question is, does C# use an internal lock to handle file I/O between processes, or does the OS use some type of mutual exclusion for file I/O? From what I learned about operating systems, well at least unix, is that the OS doesn't implement any type of mutual exclusion for processes trying to access the same file.

  Hi, I need to download and parse webpage with lxml and build UTF-8 xml output. I thing schema in pseudocode is more illustrative: from lxml import etree webfile = urllib2.urlopen(url) root = etree.parse(webfile.read(), parser=etree.HTMLParser(recover=True)) txt = my_process_text(etree.tostring(root.xpath('/html/body'), encoding=utf8)) output = etree.Element("out") output.text = txt outputfile.write(etree.tostring(output, encoding=utf8)) So webfile can be in any encoding (lxml should handle this). Outputfile have to be in utf-8. I'm not sure where to use encoding/coding. Is this schema ok? (I cant find good tutorial about lxml and encoding, but I can find many problems with this...)   Hi, I have a number of elements that i want to loop through as groups. Consider this HTML: <input class="matching match-1" /> <input class="matching match-1" /> <input class="matching match-2" /> <input class="matching match-2" /> <input class="matching match-2" /> <input class="matching match-3" /> <input class="matching match-3" /> // etc I want a CSS selector that would allow me to loop through these as groups so there would be - using this example - 3 iterations of the loop (one for match-1, one for match-2 and one for match-3). The 1,2,3 etc is a variable used for grouping but this is not fixed so it cannot rely on hard coding of these values. Is this even possible? I'll be using jQuery or prototype not that that should matter really. Thanks

• Does it make sense to have more than one UDP Datagram socket on standby? Are "simultaneous" packets

  I'm coding a networking application on Android. I'm thinking of having a single UDP port and Datagram socket that receives all the datagrams that are sent to it and then have different processing queues for these messages. I'm doubting if I should have a second or third UDP socket on standby. Some messages will be very short (100bytes or so), but others will have to transfer files. My concern is, will the Android kernel drop the small messages if it's too busy handling the bigger ones? Update "The latter function calls sock_queue_rcv_skb() (in sock.h), which queues the UDP packet on the socket's receive buffer. If no more space is left on the buffer, the packet is discarded. Filtering also is performed by this function, which calls sk_filter() just like TCP did. Finally, data_ready() is called, and UDP packet reception is completed."

• Create Custom Builds of an Xcode Project

  I am going to build a Mac application written in Obj-C with Xcode. For argument's sake let's say it will have 10 optional features. I need a way to enable or disable those features to create custom builds of the application. These builds would be automated (most likely through the Mac OS X Terminal) so I would need a way to state which of these features are enabled/disabled at build time (a configuration file or CLI arguments would be ideal.) So what is the best way to accomplish this? I'm trying to plan this out before I start coding so that there is proper separation in my code base to allow for these features to come and go. Ideally the custom build would only contain compiled code for the features it should have. In other words I don't want to always compile all the features and condition them out at runtime.

• How to "kill" background worker completely?

  Hi All, I am writing a windows application that runs a sequence of digital IO actions repeatedly. This sequence of actions starts when the user click a "START" button, and it is done by a background worker in backgroundWorker1_DoWork(). However, there are occasions when I get the "This backgroundworker is currently busy......." error message. I am thinking of implementing the following in the code, by using a while loop to "kill" the background worker before starting another sequence of action: if (backgroundWorker1.IsBusy == true) { backgroundWorker1.CancelAsync(); while (backgroundWorker1.IsBusy == true) { backgroundWorker1.CancelAsync(); } backgroundWorker1.Dispose(); } backgroundWorker1.RunWorkerAsync(); I think my main concern is, will the backgroundWorker1 be "killed" eventually? If it will, will it take a long time to complete it? Will this coding get me into an infinite loop?

• Quickest and easiest way to implement speech to text conversion for a small speech subset.

  Hi, I want to implement a system that receives speech through a microphone on my Mac OS x. I know arbitrary speech recognition is close to impossible without training the system so I'm willing to restrict it to 10 simple sentences. It must recognize with a high degree of accuracy which of these 10 sentences are being spoken, generate the text and add an entry to a remote MySQL database. With these being the architecture of the system I want to implement, could anyone give me an overview of what would be the best way to go about implementing this system? I'm looking for ideas like open source libraries to minimize the coding as this is just a prototype application for a demonstration. Basically I'm looking for a quick and easy solution. Thanks!

• How can HTML5 "replace" Flash?

  A topic of debate that's seen a resurgence since the unveiling of the iPad is the issue of Flash versus HTML5. There are those that suggest that HTML5 will one day supplant/replace Adobe Flash. I do not develop software that runs in a browser, so my (limited) understanding is: HTML is a pure-text markup language that is delivered over HTTP to a client browser. The client browser interprets the markup and renders (with varying degrees of success) the page according to an standard specification. Adobe Flash is a propriety framework for working with audio, video, sound and raster/vector graphics. It requires special authoring tools (a compiler perhaps?) and a custom player that's available as a plug-in to most common browsers. Could someone please explain (to this C/C++ developer) how it is possible from a technical/coding point-of-view that a text-based markup language (HTML5) could be considered a replacement to a multimedia framework (Flash)? Please no opinionated arguments - just technical facts.

  Hello! I'm looking for a basic code samples of how to upload files to server with HTTP POST method on Qt. My task: I have simple Qt program and I need to select any image file from the local host and upload it to the server. The selection part and GUI is simple and I have already done it, but with POST uploading I'm confused. In addition I have to say, that there is no authorization to upload file. If someone already looking this topic? PS: the reason why I'm asking and not coding my self is time, I need to get this method quick.
