• Do you have any tips for comments code to keep them in step with the code?

  G'day, I've read both of Steve McConnell's excellent Code Complete books "Code Complete" and "Code Complete 2" and was wondering if people have any other suggestions for commenting code. My commenting mantra could be summed up by the basic idea of expressing "what the code below cannot say". While enjoying this interesting blog post by Jeff about commenting I was still left wondering "When coding, when do you feel a comment is required?" Edit: Oops. Seems to be a duplicate of this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/121945/how-do-you-like-your-comments so sorry for the noise. Thanks to my, seemingly, SO shadow for pointing it out - wouldn't have thought I was that interesting. Now off to read the original post and see if it is relevant. Edit: I meant to emphasise the best appraoch to ensure that your comments will stay in step with the code. Maybe expressing an intent rather than the mechansim for instance.

• Mixin or Trait implementation in AS3?

  I'm looking for ideas on how to implement a Mixin/Trait style system in AS3. I want to be able to compose a number of classes together into a single object. Of course this is not a language level feature of AS3, but I'm hoping that there is maybe some way to do this using prototype based techniques or maybe some bytecode hacking that I believe AsMock uses to implement it's functionality. An existing Java example is Qi4J where the user define interfaces that the Qi4j framework implements based on metadata tags and coding by convention. Has anyone any ideas on how to get the Mixin/Trait concept working within AS3?

• Splitting up/merging windows in WPF

  I'm new to WPF but I need to implement following functionality: I have a window that contains one Grid (might be changed to stack panel or something else). In that Grid I have 2 columns, each of them contains another Grid. Lets call them gridFirst and gridSecond. There is also GridSplitter in first column allowing to resize the columns. I want to provide a button that will allow to separate gridFirst from this window and display it "as it is" in another window. How do I do that? It would be nice if the new window had a same menu as the original window without me having to copy-paste (that not a good coding practise) all its code to the new window. Thanks for answers

• VIM: created syntax not showing up?

  HI people I recently changed to VIM for coding in C. I'd like to hightlight the operators +-<=& ... etc I searched in google how should i do it, and i found the answer in this website: I was suppose to do something like: syntax match Operadores /[][><()&!|+*={}-]/ hi Operadores guifg=#000000 gui=BOLD Those characters were supposed to appear as black, bold characters. However, that doesn't happen when I open my .C files. However, if I create a newfile, (where there the C syntax doesn't show up), I am able to see the black, bolded operators. How can i correct this situation, and why is this happening (it seams like if my syntax is beeing overwrided by the C syntax). I'm using gvim, and this is my vimrc: colorscheme nicotine set smartindent set number set guifont=Inconsolata\ Medium\ 11 set numberwidth=5 noremap j jzz noremap k kzz Thanks, any help is appreciated. People are able to add new tabs, but the webbrowser component only appears in one tab page. • ASP.NET MVC: Is it "wrong" to use HTTP 500 via an AJAX request to return invalid form content?

  Here's the situation: I've got two partial views. One has a form. What needs to happen is when the form is posted via an AJAX request, if the operation succeeds, the area with the second partial is repopulated with the content. However, if the posted data was invalid, the original partial is repopulated with an error message. I'm using jQuery and the ajaxForm plugin to handle the form posts and responses. Would it be "wrong"/bad coding/wtf-worthy to conditionally use $.html() to replace the content in one area when it's a 200, and a different area if it's a 500? To me, this idea smells, but I'm not sure how else to accomplish the goal.

• Inverse Logistic Function / Reverse Sigmoid Function

  I am currently coding up a fuzzy logic library in java. I have found the equations for all the standard functions - Grade, inverseGrade, Triangle, Trapezoid, Gaussian. However, I can't find the inverse of the sigmoid/ logistic function. The way I have written the logistic function is java is : //f(x) = 1/(1+e(-x)) public double logistic(double x){ return (1/(1+(Math.exp(-x))); } But I can't work out or find the inverse anywhere. My algebraic/calculus abilities are fairly limited, hence why I haven't been able to work out the inverse of the function. Any hints or pointers would be a big help. Thanks

  i am calling ajax every second in page.. Here the server page returns randomly generated number,using this number(converted into seconds) i am triggering another function in ajax success .it works My problem suppose random number = 5 means trigger() function called after 5 seconds using setTimeout,but rember ajax call is triggering every 1 second so trigger function also called many time. i want to make ajax call wait untill trigger function execution.Which means i wanna pause that ajax call untill 5 seconds after that resume How can i do this ? • How to avoid code duplication for one-off methods with a slightly different signature

  I am wrapping a number of functions from a vender API in C#. Each of the wrapping functions will fit the pattern: public IEnumerator<IValues> GetAggregateValues(string pointID, DateTime startDate, DateTime endDate, TimeSpan period) { // Validate Data // Break up Requesting Time-Span // Make Requests // Read Results (through another method call } 5 of the 6 requests are aggregate data pulls and have the same signature, so it makes sense to put them in one method and pass the aggregate type to avoid duplication of code. The 6th method however follows the exact same pattern with the same result-set, but is not an aggregate, so no time period is passed to the function (changing the signature). Is there an elegant way to handle this kind of situation without coding a one-off function to handle the non-aggregate request?

• One repository per table or one per functional section?

  I am using ASP.NET MVC 2 and C# with Entity Framework 4.0 to code against a normalised SQL Server database. A part of my database structure contains a table of entries with foreign keys relating to sub-tables containing drivers, cars, engines, chassis etc. I am following the Nerd Dinner tutorial which sets up a repository for dinners which is fair enough. Do I do one for drivers, one for engines, one for cars and so on or do I do one big one for entries? Which is the best practise for this type of work? I am still new to this method of coding.

• How does Alpha Five Version 10 Rate for Web App Development

  I came across this RDMS via the advert on stackoverflow. Seems to be in the vein of MS Access / Filemaker / Apex database development tools but focused on web based applications. It quotes rave reviews from EWeek and a favourable mention from Dr Dobbs regarding its ability to create AJAX web applications without coding. The Eweek review, apparently written by an ASP.NET programmer, goes on to proclaim the ease at which apps can be extended using the inbuilt XBasic language and how custom javascript can easily be added without wading through code. Has anyone here built a web app with Alpha 5? Does anyone have comments on the development process, the speed of it or limitations they encountered along the way? To me it seems Oracle APEX comes closest to the feature set, has anyone programmed in both and have any comments?

  Any advice on the best way to strike a balance between the work methods of an offshore supplier and the work methods of a new onshore team? We have an offshore supplier with about 2 years who have their own working practices and methods. I was bought in as the first onshore developer for my company with the view to vetting the code that comes in and putting together some best practices. Now from what I've seen there are lots of holes in their process (e.g. estimation, planning, code reviews, coding standards from about 10 years ago, no concept of mocking, refactoring etc). I need to be seen as a problem solver and not a problem creator but also I need to try and be somewhat forceful of what they are doing needs improving and at the end of the day they are a supplier. I know the industry's standard language is C++, for 3D graphics the main choice is between Direct 3D and OpenGL, but what is the most widely used GUI framework? • Table and Column names causing problems

  I have an issue when the T4 linq templates generate the classes for my MySql db using subsonic 3. It looks like one of our table names "operator" is causing problems in the Context.cs generated class. In the following line of code in Context.cs Visual Studio sees <operator> as a c# operator and generates a compilation error of "Type expected" public Query<operator> operators { get; set; } Is there anyway I can work around this without having to rename my database table and column names? For example hard coding something in Settings.ttinclude to use or map different names to specific db tables and columns?

• Seeking to zoom in on an image, slowly, on page load, using Jquery

  Hello, I am looking to give the impression of zooming in from a large image to a detailed area of that image, over time, when the page loads - using javascript (jquery, preferably). I have been given the following flash site as a reference (action happens just after title fades in): http://www.delicatessennyc.com/ Not sure if this is even possible. I know I could switch out the large image for a smaller one - but my boss is hellbent of achieving this flash-type action using javascript. In another example, I've seen another form: http = new Http http(/* argument here */) Is this valid Scala? I guess it must be, because the author is a Scala expert. But it makes no sense to me. Actions are usually performed by invoking methods on objects, whether explicitly as object.doSomething() or implicitly as object = something (using the apply() method underneath the syntactic sugar). All I can think of is that a constructor is being used to do something in addition to constructing an object. In other words, it is having side effects, such as in this case going off and doing something on the web.

• Setting a Silverlight textbox control's width relatively

  Hello, I tried searching on stackoverflow for an answer to my question but couldn't seem to find anything relevant. Since I'm relatively new to Silverlight, I'm not even sure if this is possible, but I am trying to figure out if it is possible to set a Silverlight textbox control's width value proportionally to it's immediate parent container? It would be nice to avoid hard coding a width value. Say you want to place a textbox control inside a horizontally aligned StackPanel control and have it's width always dynamically adjusted to be 80% of the total width of the StackPanel. Is this possible to do declaratively in your xaml markup, or will I need to resort to some codebehind attached to some event handler to accomplish this? fyi, I am currently using Visual Web Developer Express 2008 to write my silverlight code. thanks in advance, John

• How do I set the next available custom color in the ColorDialog?

  I'm currently coding in VB.net. A user places the cursor in a table cell and clicks on "Table Background Color" to edit the current background colour. Currently I have been able to detect the current colour (for instance a light blue) and set that colour in the ColorDialog (Colour swatches are correct and RGB values are correct). What I would like to do is enable the user to click on the "Add to Custom Colors" to save the colour. Problem is, it sets the first square in the custom colours area (which happens to already be filled in with another custom colour), rather than finding the next square that is white and set it there instead. Is this possible? If the user selects a new custom colour square when they first load the ColorDialog, the current colour (light blue) disappears and the colour swatches and RGB values are set as white. Thanks
