• Tools to create maximum velocity in a .NET dev team

  If you were to self-fund a software project which tools, frameworks, components would you employ to ensure maximum productivity for the dev team and that the "real" problem is being worked on. What I'm looking for are low friction tools which get the job done with a minimum of fuss. Tools I'd characterize as such are SVN/TortioseSVN, ReSharper, VS itself. I'm looking for frameworks which solve the problems inherient in all software projects like ORM, logging, UI frameworks/components. An example on the UI side would be ASP.NET MVC vs WebForms vs MonoRail.

• Ubuntu - Create a link to a specified directory so I can easily change to that directory

  Is it possible to create a symlink to a directory, like /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar that I can access from everywhere? I want to be able to say cd myapp from anywhere in the directory tree and go to that directory. Is it only possible in the directory where I create the symlink? Do I have to update my ~/.bashrc file to include an alias like: alias myapp="cd /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar" and then just type myapp from anywhere? What is the best way to handle this situation so I don't always have to type in the long directory? I also want to be able to use that parameter in say a copy command, so the alias wouldn't help in that situation. Hopefully I can do something similar where ~ maps to the home directory in any command.

  They seem to open in an internet explorer type window, does anyone know: How long have HTA files been around? Have they been around since Windows 98? Do they rely on Internet Explorer being installed, and/or a certain version of it? If you choose another browser on the browser selection screen update for Windows 7, will HTA files still work? Do HTA files open on other browsers? Are HTA files windows-only? There is a huge lack of documentation on google about HTA files, so it's tricky to work out. I need to present the client with a list of minimum requirements to ensure our HTA content CD will work.

  Given I have a list of dependencies, like: module1 module2 dependsOn module1 module3 dependsOn module1 module4 dependsOn module3 I would like to create a build order where each build step is found on one line, and each line contains a list of one or more modules which can be compiled at the same time, and which only depend on modules compiled earlier. So, for the above data set, create a list like: module1 module2,module3 module4 Now, this is basically just a problem of creating a directed graph, and analyzing it. Now, I am using Ant, and would very much like to use something off-the-shelf... what is the minimum of custom code I need to have it create such a dependency-aware build list starting from the given input? BTW, these modules are actually custom modules, so maven will not work.

  I have been reading some django tutorial and it seems like all the view functions have to go in a file called "views.py" and all the models go in "models.py". I fear that I might end up with a lot of view functions in my view.py file and the same is the case with models.py. Is my understanding of django apps correct? Django apps lets us separate common functionality into different apps and keep the file size of views and models to a minimum? For example: My project can contain an app for recipes (create, update, view, and search) and a friend app, the comments app, and so on. Can I still move some of my view functions to a different file? So I only have the CRUD in one single file?

  I'd like to know why most Banks or Financial companies prefer Oracle than other RDBMS for their core systems (the absolutely minimum features that a Bank must support). I found a few answers that didn't satisfy me. For example: Oracle has more features. But features for what? Can't you implement that in application level if you were not using Oracle? Could someone please describe a bit more technical but still on high-level overview of what the bank needs and how Oracle would solve it and the others can't or don't have the features yet? I came from the web-app (web 2.0) crowd who normally hear news about MySQL, PostgreSQL or even key-value/column-oriented storage solution. • Problems installing Ruby 1.9.2 and rvm on Debian Lenny

  I have currently have Ruby 1.9.1 (bad) and want to install 1.9.3 under rvm. However, rvm requirements gives a long list: install build-essential openssl libreadline6 libreadline6-dev curl git-core zlib1g zlib1g-dev libssl-dev libyaml-dev libsqlite3-dev sqlite3 libxml2-dev libxslt-dev autoconf libc6-dev ncurses-dev automake libtool bison subversion But I've hit a problem here: /# apt-get install libreadline6 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Couldn't find package libreadline6 ...and (I imagine after just hunting down a Debian source to download curl) finding these packages isn't going to be a picnic. Given that there are few packages to install before I can get rvm to install Ruby 1.9.3, what's a good way forward? My sources.list: deb http://archive.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib

• Changing API level Android Studio

  I want to change the minimum SDK version in Android Studio from API 12 to API 14. I have tried changing it in the manifest file, i.e., <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="14" android:targetSdkVersion="18" /> and rebuilding the project, but I still get the Android Studio IDE throwing up some errors. I presume I have to set the min SDK in 'project properties' or something similar so the IDE recognises the change, but I can't find where this is done in Android Studio. Pointers greatly appreciated. I am trying to implement SIFT algorithm where I am able to create the DoG pyramid and identify the local maximum or minimum in each octave. What I don't understand is that how to use these local max/min in each octave. How do I combine these points? My question may sound very trivial. I'd like to compile a list/catalog of good questions, a kind of minimum standard to see if the applicants are experienced. So, my question is: What questions do you think should a good .NET programmer be able to respond? I'd also see it as a checklist for myself, in order to see where my own deficits are (there are many...). *UPDATE: It want to make clear that we're not testing only for .NET knowledge, and that problem solving capabilities and general programming skills are even more important to us.

• Public folder emails not being delivered

  Hello, We have just introduced an Exchange 2010 installation into our existing Exchange 2003 (all standard) environment. We make a lot of use of our Public Folders in 2003, so I am wanting to make a small PF tree in the 2010 system to test some applications against. I have created a few public folders in the 2010 public folder management tool, and mail enabled them, gotten email addresses, etc. However, mail will not be delivered, it queues on my existing 2003 Exchange server's 'Local Delivery' queue, and eventually times out and bounces. I guess the Exchange 'system' including the new 2010 server thinks that all public folder email must need to be delivered to the old 2003 server. Is it possible for me to have two public folder databases that each receive mail? If so, is there something I am missing to enable this? Thanks -R

• How to validate ToCheckList jQuery plugin (or multiple select fields)?

  Anyone ever use the toChecklist jQuery plugin? It basically turns a multi-select box into a list of checkboxes. Makes it easier for users to understand that they can choose more than one item - excellent plugin. However, I'm trying to make sure that users on my site pick at least 1 item in the list. ToChecklist has the capability of limiting the selection to a max value, but not minimum. I'm already using the jQuery validate plugin to validate the whole form, any ideas to get it to work against a multi-select box (which would then hopefully just work with toChecklist)?   We have library website written in classic ASP that allows to browse and search by multiple (50+) filter criterias (author, publication year, ISSN ... ). There are lots of security holes and we have only one developer who hardly maintain this ASP-site with some minor features for last 3 years. There are two common user groups - administrators (librarians) and students (5000+) who have books on hands and searches for them. We don't want to rewrite it from scratch, just to use standard free CMS (.net based) and migrate library data and user accounts with minimum effort. What CMS will you suggest? Thank you in advance.

• Simple but efficient way to store a series of small changes to an image?

  I have a series of images. Each one is typically (but not always) similar to the previous one, with 3 or 4 small rectangular regions updated. I need to record these changes using a minimum of disk space. The source images are not compressed, but I would like the deltas to be compressed. I need to be able to recreate the images exactly as input (so a lossy video codec is not appropriate.) I am thinking of something along the lines of: Composite the new image with a negative of the old image Save the composited image in any common format that can compress using RLE (probably PNG.) Recreate the second image by compositing the previous image with the delta. Although the images have an alpha channel, I can ignore it for the purposes of this function. Is there an easy-to-implement algorithm or free Java library with this capability?

• How can I install a headless JDK on an Ubuntu Jaunty server?

  I recently set up a build server that requires a JDK to run (for example, to compile the Java sources). The OpenJDK package in Ubuntu pulls in the OpenJDK JRE as a dependency which, in turn, depends on a large number of packages that are only relevant for graphical environments. For the standard JRE, there's a headless version of the package, but for the JDK, no. This issue has been discussed in various places before, and one solution that I found and used was this: $ apt-get --no-install-recommends -d install openjdk-6-jdk $ dpkg -i --ignore-depends=openjdk-6-jre /path/to/just-downloaded.deb While this worked, it now leaves my system with a broken dependency tree and apt-get refuses further installs untill I run apt-get -f. Is there a better solution to this?

• Dashcode: How to create a custom/new Project Template?

  I'm trying to customize the javascript that Dashcode uses. So that I won't step on Apple's Project Templates, I want to make a custom project template that would appear as a choice after you click "New Project." I have been able to modify one of the existing templates (like, Custom, Browser, Utility, RSS, and Podcast). I can not, however, seem to add a new template to the list, like adding "JJ's Awesome New Cross Platform Template" as a choice. I have tried copying the directory Plugins/TemplateWebCustom.wdgtTemplate and changing in Custom's Info.plist file the com.apple.Dashcode.template.web.custom to, say com.apple.Dashcode.template.web.custom2 and in Resouces/project.plist updating the key value pair: TemplateIdentifier ==>com.apple.Dashcode.template.web.custom Is it possible to add a new Project Template? • Mystery "users" email group

  This morning, our entire company received a spam message sent to [email protected], where "ourdomain.on.ca" is our actual domain. There is a distinguished name that this could correspond to: CN=Users,DC=ourdomain,DC=on,DC=ca Looking at the attributes though, there is no mail, no proxyAddresses, no signs that there is a mailbox configured there. I did some LDAP queries, searching for: (proxyAddresses=smtp:[email protected]) ([email protected]) But am not seeing any records. (I also search for known email addresses to ensure the tree was being searched properly.) We are running Exchange 2003. Is there another place to look for group email addresses? Is it possible that the distinguished name is being automatically translated to an email address?

• Why is my ipad's wireless so flakey?

  I'm the proud owner of a new IPad here in the UK. All is good, except for the wifi, which is a bit flakey. It connects fine to my Draytek router which is set for WPA/WPA2 and 56g only, displaying full signal strength. Then, after a few minutes, it goes down to minimum strength... And sometimes it goes back up again. A few times, it seems to loose connection completely, and needs to be turned off and on again. I've looked at the Apple support site, and have tried their recommendations (which are not really very relevant), but still nothing. I've tried setting the router to wpa2 only, and setting long-preamble. Right now, I guess I want to know if it's a hardware problem with my device and should be returned, or if it's a problem with all ipads which will be resolved. Guess I could take it back to the Mac genius bar, but I find those guys so incredibly pretentious and, frankly, rather useless, that i'd rather wait until I've exercised other options!

• What's the right way to do mutable data structures (e.g., skip lists, splay trees) in F#?

  What's a good way to implement mutable data structures in F#? The reason I’m asking is because I want to go back and implement the data structures I learned about in the algorithms class I took this semester (skip lists, splay trees, fusion trees, y-fast tries, van Emde Boas trees, etc.), which was a pure theory course with no coding whatsoever, and I figure I might as well try to learn F# while I’m doing it. I know that I “should” use finger trees to get splay tree functionality in a functional language, and that I should do something with laziness to get skip-list functionality, etc. , but I want to get the basics nailed down before I try playing with purely functional implementations. There are lots of examples of how to do functional data structures in F#, but there isn’t much on how to do mutable data structures, so I started by fixing up the doubly linked list here into something that allows inserts and deletes anywhere. My plan is to turn this into a skip list, and then use a similar structure (discriminated union of a record) for the tree structures I want to implement. Before I start on something more substantial, is there a better way to do mutable structures like this in F#? Should I just use records and not bother with the discriminated union? Should I use a class instead? Is this question "not even wrong"? Should I be doing the mutable structures in C#, and not dip into F# until I want to compare them to their purely functional counterparts? And, if a DU of records is what I want, could I have written the code below better or more idiomatically?   The title isn't very clear but I'll try to explain. Having this class: class Wrapped(object): def method_a(self): # do some operations return n def method_b(self): # also do some operations return n I wan't to have a class that performs the same way as this one: class Wrapper(object): def __init__(self): self.ws = [Wrapped(1),Wrapped(2),Wrapped(3)] def method_a(self): results=[Wrapped.method_a(w) for w in self.ws] sum_ = sum(results,0.0) average = sum_/len(self.ws) return average def method_b(self): results=[Wrapped.method_b(w) for w in self.ws] sum_ = sum(results,0.0) average = sum_/len(self.ws) return average obviously this is not the actual problem at hand (it is not only two methods), and this code is also incomplete (only included the minimum to explain the problem). So, what i am looking for is a way to obtain this behavior. Meaning, whichever method is called in the wrapper class, call that method for all the Wrapped class objects and return the average of their results. Can it be done? how? • Image processing in a multhithreaded mode using Java

  Hi Folks, I am supposed to process images in a multithreaded mode using Java. I may having varying number of images where as my number of threads are fixed. I have to process all the images using the fixed set of threads. I am just stuck up on how to do it, I had a look ThreadExecutor and BlockingQueues etc...I am still not clear. What I am doing is, - Get the images and add them in a LinkedBlockingQueue which has runnable code of the image processor. - Create a threadpoolexecutor for which one of the arguements is the LinkedBlockingQueue earlier. - Iterate through a for loop till the queue size and do a threadpoolexecutor.execute(linkedblockingqueue.poll). - all i see is it processes only 100 images which is the minimum thread size passed in LinkedBlockingQueue size. I see I am seriously wrong in my understanding somewhere, how do I process all the images in sets of 100(threads) until they are all done? Any examples or psuedocodes would be highly helpful Thanks!
