• nvidia-settings makes one of my dual monitors grey and useless, disables network

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, Precise Pangolin, with a PNY GTS 250 1GB video card and a monitor plugged into each of the DVI ports. I'm using the proprietary drivers (post-release updates). If I set anything to do with Separate X Screens up in nvidia-settings (and write it to xorg.conf and reboot), my second monitor has a grey background, no menu bar, no ability to have a window on it, the second monitor doesn't get picked up in a screneshot, and if I move my mouse cursor to it it's an ugly black X. Plus, my network is unable to connect to anything. If I subsequently delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf and reboot, everything goes back to working, albeit with a single monitor activated. If I set anything to do with TwinView up in nvidia-settings, my second monitor starts working, but it isn't seen as a second monitor by Ubuntu, so I can't apply color calibration to it separately. Plus, my mouse gets "caught" between the monitors every time I try to move my cursor between the two. What gives? If it helps, this is the xorg.conf that nvidia-settings generates for Separate X Screens.

• Best strategy (tried and tested) for using Box2D in a real-time multiplayer game?

  I am currently tackling real-time multiplayer physics updates for a game engine I am writing. My question is how best to use Box2D for networked physics. If I run the simulation on the server, should I send position, velocity etc to every client on every tick? Should I send it every few ticks? Maybe there is another way that I am missing? How has this problem been solved using Box2D before? Anyone with some ideas would be greatly appreciated!

• How to connect to a wireless network that has a two word name with a space?

  Ok, I have searched for some time in earnest for an answer to this question. I have a Beagleboard which has Ubuntu 10.10 Minimal install for Arm running on it. With the default install, minimal tools, no GUI, I am unable to connect to my wireless network. The name of my network is "MYNAME NETWORK". Using a text editor to edit /etc/network/interfaces I can not seem to connect at all. As an experiment, I connected to a friends network, which has a one word name "dystek",and was able to connect with Zero issues, and update and install a full GUI for ubuntu Arm. The problem is that I don't want a full blown gui on the beagleboard, just a minimal install of ubuntu with CLI is all I need or want. Is there anyway to connect to my wireless network via editing the /etc/network/interfaces file. Surely there is... I just don't know how. Right now my interfaces file looks like this: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet static address 192.168.1.200 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 wireless-essid BARRETT NETWORK wireless-key 46456xxxxxxxx Any help would be appreciated.

• Authentication for users on a Single Page App?

  I have developed a single page app prototype that is using Backbone on the front end and going to consume from a thin RESTful API on the server for it's data. Coming from heavy server side application development (php and python), I have really enjoyed the new different design approach with a thick client side MVC but am confused on how best to restrict the app to authenticated users who log in. I prefer to have the app itself behind a login and would also like to implement other types of logins eventually (openid, fb connect, etc) in addition to the site's native login. I am unclear how this is done and have been searching - but unsuccessful in finding information that made it clear to me. In the big picture, what is the current best practice for registering users and requiring them to login to use your single page app? Once a user is logged in, how are the api requests authenticated? Can I store a session but how do I detect for this session in the API calls? Any answers to this would be much appreciated!

• Best free wireframe software for websites

  Working on a non-profit project and wondering if there's a standout wireframing tool for website design. I've taken photos of collaborative whiteboard drawings and now I want to put the results into something slightly more professional looking for review. For obvious reasons I'm not interested in anything that looks too much like the finished product or takes longer than it would for me to write the HTML. I checked out jumpchart, but that only seems to let you do content panes, not draw whole page layouts. Free or close to free is desirable - for instance jumpchart licensing seems very reasonable.

  I'm re-working on the design of an existing application which is build using WebForms. Currently the plan is to work it into a MVP pattern application while using Ninject as the IoC container. The reason for Ninject to be there is that the boss had wanted a certain flexibility within the system so that we can build in different flavor of business logic in the model and let the programmer to choose which to use based on the client request, either via XML configuration or database setting. I know that Ninject have no need for XML configuration, however I'm confused on how it can help to dynamically inject the dependency into the system? Imagine I have a interface IMember and I need to bind this interface to the class decided by a xml or database configuration at the launch of the application, how can I achieve that?

• NetworkManager not populating resolv.conf

  I recently upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04, and now NetworkManager isn't populating /etc/resolv.conf when connecting to wireless networks, when it had been working perfectly in 11.10. I'm not seeing any explicit errors in either the NM UI or in syslog. How do I diagnose what's wrong? Edit: If I try to run resolvconf, I get the error "resolvconf: Error: /etc/resolv.conf isn't a symlink, not doing anything." What should it be a symlink to and/or how do I get NM to populate it? This says the symlink should point to /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf, but that file does not exist on my system.

• How to create a reasonably sized urban area manually but efficiently

  I have a game concept that only really works in an urban area that is of reasonable scale and diversity. In terms of what it should look like, think GTA, in terms of the size think more like a small neighbourhood with residents and a few local shops, perhaps a supermarket. I'm mostly experienced in programming and not at all with modelling, texturing or drawing, but I've found that SketchUp allows me to design interesting looking buildings that I model after real world buildings in my own neighbourhood. Designing these buildings and other objects can take from a few tens of minutes to a few hours. My question is: what is the best approach for a one man army like me who does manage to model buildings to create an interesting city environment in a reasonable amount of time? My game will not be based on procedural generation, the environment will actually be modelled like GTA cities.

  One of my job now is to design a database for a survey. Let's say we have a series of questions (web-based), in which one page contains one question. Not every person will be given the same questions, those are based on their previous answers and also randomness. My idea here is, using the second approach seems better, however I would like to know whether updating the table is (much) slower than inserting a new row? Also with the first approach, I can omit having some null answers. The total questions given are fix, the client wont add any more question later on. • Designing a Business Rule Engine

  I have a requirement where there are 10 Rules to be applied on data in excel. If Rule 1 and Rule 2 fails rest of the rules are not checked. But if Rule 1 and Rule 2 passes the rest of all the Rules should be verified and if any errors found- they should be logged. Is there any design pattern which I can use to keep this Rule Engine flexible for adding these 10 rules and Closed for any additional chains in the Current Rule. I was thinking of something like a Decorator Pattern. Will this help me achieve that?

  I have a davicom dm9601 USB ethernet card. When I plug in the device, it is detected and drivers are loaded, but I can't connect to internet using it. It works perfectly on XP, other laptop but not working on Ubuntu 11.10 How can I install the driver for this? I have tried many things But nothing is working. • Which purpose do armor points serve?

  I have seen a mechanic which I call "armor points" in many games: Quake, Counter Strike, etc. Generally, while the player has these armor points, he takes less damage. However, they act in a similar fashion that health points do: you lose them by taking said damage. Why would you design such a feature? Is this just health 2.0, or am I missing something? To me, armor only makes sense in, for example, RPG games, where it is a constant that determines your resistance. But I don't see why would it need to be reduceable during combat.

• Is it possible to keep nm-applet running between invocations of WM startup?

  I am using nm-applet to interface with NetworkManager, running xmonad as a window manager. My X sessions (including nm-applet) are set up with a /usr/local/bin/xmonad.start script. My question is, how can I keep nm-applet running in the background as long as X is running, but not necessarily xmonad? As mentioned above, it is being started with xmonad (and dying with it when xmonad is restarted, etc). I am using gdm to manage my X sessions, and I'm running 10.10. Where's a good place to start nm-applet to suit my particular needs? I need to remove it from the control of xmonad, but don't know where to start it otherwise. Any help, tips, etc appreciated. Edit: problem seems to be with how I have integrated xmonad.   A friend of mine and I are planning a game together to work on in our free time. It's not an extensive game, but it's not a simple one either. He's working on the story behind the game while I'm working on the graphics and code. I don't really know where to start with the game. We know what the basic type of game it's going to be and how it would be played, but I'm having a hard time of actually knowing where to begin. I have Xcode open but I don't really even know what I should be designing first. What is some advice for this writer's block? Where is a good place to start with a game? Should I design all the graphics and layout before even touching Xcode? Should I program the things I know I'll have difficulty with first before getting to the easy stuff?

  I used the newest vendor driver for my onboard NIC (board: ASUS M5A97 Pro) and those sites to get it running on kernel 3.0: http://www.twm-kd.com/linux/realtek-rtl81688111e-and-ubuntu-linux/ The problem now is, that this doesn't work with either kernel 3.1 or 3.2: https://code.google.com/p/r8168/issues/detail?id=6 My question is: does anyone have a solution to get it run on the newest kernel? • Is nesting types considered bad practice?

  As noted by the title, is nesting types (e.g. enumerated types or structures in a class) considered bad practice or not? When you run Code Analysis in Visual Studio it returns the following message which implies it is: Warning 34 CA1034 : Microsoft.Design : Do not nest type 'ClassName.StructueName'. Alternatively, change its accessibility so that it is not externally visible. However, when I follow the recommendation of the Code Analysis I find that there tend to be a lot of structures and enumerated types floating around in the application that might only apply to a single class or would only be used with that class. As such, would it be appropriate to nest the type sin that case, or is there a better way of doing it?

  In a corporate web-design setup, who typically makes more per hour, the graphic designer or the programmer? By graphic designer, I mean somebody who builds mockups probably in photoshop, selects font-styles, colors, etc. Most things layout-wise are near pixel-perfect, but likely after the initial implementation by the programmer, there will be a lot of small changes directed by the graphic designer. By programmer, I mean somebody who is coding the CSS, the HTML, and light backend support, probably in PHP. The programmer will attempt to duplicate the mockups given the limitations of the medium, and consult with the graphic designer afterwards on what changes are tangible and which are not. Both probably have an undergraduate degree from a respected four-year institution.

• Connecting to VPN / proxy with different port number

  I have an IP address, port, username, and password for one of those VPN / proxy services that allows you to use an IP address other than what your ISP gives you, but in the 'Edit Connections VPN' GUI I don't see where to enter a port. I enter the IP address under 'Gateway' and the username and password where it asks for it, but it doesn't work. I try to enter it with the IP address ending with a colon, followed by the port, but that doesn't work either (e.g. "1.1.1.1:9999"). Any idea how I could make it work? I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. • Using Google App Engine to Perform World Updates vs an Authoritative Server

  I am considering different game server architectures that use GAE. The types of games I am considering are turn-based where the world status would need to be updated about once per minute. I am looking for an answer that persuades me to either perform the world update on the google servers OR an authoritative server that syncs with the datastore. The main goal here would be to minimize GAE daily quotas. For some rough numbers, I am assuming 10,000 entities requiring updates. Each entity update would require: Reading 5 private entity variables (fetched from datastore) Fetching as many as 20 static variables (from datastore or persisted in server memory) Writing 5 entity variables Clients of the game would authenticate and set state directly against GAE as well as pull the latest world state from GAE. Running the update on GAE would consist of a cron job launched every minute. This would update all of the entities and save the results to the datastore. This would be more CPU intensive for GAE. Running the update on an authoritative server would consist of fetching entity data from the GAE datastore, calculating the new entity states and pushing the new state variables back to the datastore. This would be more bandwidth intensive for the datastore.

  I'm creating my own game engine. I've read these articles and this question about DOD and there was written to not use member functions and classes. I also heard some criticism to this idea. I can write it using member functions or non-member functions it would be similar. So what are benefits/cons of that approach or when project grows, does any of these approaches give clearer and better manageable code? With POD & non-member functions I don't have to make struct members public I can still use object id outside of engine like OpenGL does with all it's stuff, so It's not about encapsulation. • Class as first-class object

  Could a class be a first-class object? If yes, how would the implementation look? I mean, how could syntax for dynamically creating new classes look like? EDIT: I mean what example syntax could look like (I'm sorry, English is not my native language), but still I believe this question makes sense - how you give this functionality while keeping language consistent. For example how you create reference for new type. Do you make reference first-class object too and then use something like this: Reference<newType> r = new Reference<newType>(); r.set(value); Well this could get messy so you may just force user to use Object type references for dynamically created classes, but then you loose type-checking. I think creating concise syntax for this is interesting problem which solving could lead to better language design, maybe language which is metalanguage for itself (I wonder if this is possible).

• How essential is it to make a service layer?

  I started building an app in 3 layers (DAL, BL, UI) [it mainly handles CRM, some sales reports and inventory]. A colleague told me that I must move to service layer pattern, that developers came to service pattern from their experience and it is the better approach to design most applications. He said it would be much easier to maintain the application in the future that way. Personally, I get the feeling that it's just making things more complex and I couldn't see much of a benefit from it that would justify that. This app does have an additional small partial ui that uses some (but only few) of the desktop application functions so I did find myself duplicating some code (but not much). Just because of some code duplication I wouldn't convert it to be service oriented, but he said I should use it anyway because in general it's a very good architecture, why programmers are so in love with services?? I tried to google on it but I'm still confused and can't decide what to do.

• Why do I have to reconnect my usb router cable?

  I have a Iball Baton ADSD2+ Router. It's working fine but the problem is when I boot into Ubuntu I have to unplug the usb cable and then plug it again, then it starts working. Why do I have to re connect my usb cable? Let me know if you need more details. Edit : I am using a direct connection. I mean to say I don't have to enter a username or password. I am connected to internet as soon as I start my router. The problem is if I start my router before my computer I have to re connect my usb cable. Thanks.
