Disabling at application level a nic (network interface) on Windows

How can I disable at application level a network interface? The main question is this: If I disable the nic trough wmic (win7) or devcon (XP), the "plug and play" of a wired nic doesn't work any more. For example, if the user put the cable on a disabled nic, the OS doesn't know about it. So I need to persist the enable condition but disabling the networking like a disable nic. There's some API, network configuration (routing, changing ip, changing gateway, any), .NET Framework resource (Only NetFramework 2.0) or do you can think in any workaround to do this? Suggest and ideas also will be treated as a solution. Thanks and kind regards.

Changing the entire question as earlier one was very confusing. I have been exploring different clustering system to run Virtual machines on two different machines on LAN with high availability. Currently I am already using DRBD resource on two different machines on Primary/Secondary mode. In case the primary fails I manually promote the secondary to Primary and start the VM. I also explored Gluster and looks good, however, I would rather prefer clustering over Gluster (user space FS). So if anyone has idea which one would be better from ease of use prospective please I would be interested in. Moreover, sheepdog project appears good, however, could not find much documentations/Howtos. I am using Centos 6.

Where are the Microsoft downloaded app compat updates stored?

Where are the Microsoft application compatibility update settings stored on a Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 computer? Microsoft periodically release application compatibility updates (e.g. KB929427), where they list the shims that should be applied to a program in order to workaround known bugs in the software. Where are these app compat flags stored, and how can i see what shims are being applied? i have a feeling that a recent app compat update included a flag to force a particular piece of software, that we use, to require administrator. Because the task is scheduled to run nightly, and the running user does not have administrative privelages, the task is failing to start. The application is requiring to be elevated. It has the UAC shield overlay. The application has no RT_MANIFEST resource, and the compatibility option Run this program as administrator is disabled (per-user and all users). So all that's left is some secret global setting. i know user-specified compat flags are stored in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \AppCompatFlags \Layers

How can I backup all settings of free VMWare ESXi 4? I configured the host - VMs, Storage, Networking, Resource Allocation and all other settings available in vSphere Client. It consumed quite a lot of time, but works pretty well. Now I want to backup all the settings "just in case" to easily reinstall ESXi 4 if something goes really wrong. I don't ask "how to backup VMs" (so please don't point me to Ghetto-VCB script). I need to backup and restore just ESXi4 host's settings.

Unable to open Synaptic manager, unable to install packages, what can I do?

I have installed the sun java6-jdk package but it's not installed completely. After that it's giving an error when I try to install a new package. In terminal when I write "sudo apt-get install [any package name]" I get an error like this: E: could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock -open (11 Resource temporable ) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg). Also Synaptic package manager is not opening and none of the packages are downloading through any of the methods I know. Please help!

Hardware/Software inventory open source projects

Dear Stackoverflowers I would like to develop a Network Inventory application that works on any operating system. Reports on every possible resource attacehd to a network. Reports all pertinent details of hardware and software. Thats (and i hate to use the phrase) my "End Game". However I am running before i can crawl here. I have no experience of this type of development, e.g. discovering a computers hardware and software settings. I've spent almost two weeks googling and come up short! :-(. So I am turning to you to ask these questions:- My first step is to find an existing open source project i can incorporate into my own code that extracts the fine grained details i am after, e.g. EVERYTHING there is to know about the hardaware and software on a single machine. Does this project exist? or do i have to develop that first? Have i got to write all this in C? I am guessing getting this information about a computer is going to be easier than for printers, scanners, routers etc... e.g. everything else you would find attached to a network. Once i have access to a single computers details i then need to investigate how i can traverse an entire newtork of printers, scanners, routers, load balancers, switches, firewalls, workstations, servers, storeage devices, laptops, monitors, the list goes on and on One problem i have is i dont have a 1000 machine newtork to play on! Is there any such resource available on theinternet? (is that a silly question?) Anywho, if you dont ask you wont find out! One aspect iam really looking forward to finding out how to travers the entire network, should i be using TCP/IP for this? Whats a good site, blog, usergorup, book for TCP/IP development? How do i go about getting through firewalls? How many questions can i ask in one go? :-) My previous question on this topic ended up with PYTHON being championed as the language/script to go with to develop this application in. Having looked at a few PYTHON examples they all seemed to be related to WINDOWS networks and interrogating Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). I had the feeling you cant rely on whats in WMI, and even if you can that s no good for UNIX netwrks. Surely there exist common code for extracting hardware and software details from a computer? Why cant i find it on the internet? Pease help? Theres no prizes though :-( Thanks in advance I would like to appologise if i have broken forum rules or not tried hard enough on my own before asking for assistance. I just would like to start moving forward with this as its one of the best projects i have been involved with. Intraforest user account merge with Active Directory

I have a scenario where there is a root domain (RD) and two child domains (CD1 and CD2). Users have accounts on both CD1 and CD2, with identical samAccountNames, names etc, and various applications either use the CD1 or CD2 account for authentication to resources. I need to collapse CD2 into CD1, so I want to merge the accounts together. However ADMT does not allow me this option (merge options are greyed out), I think because it does not support intraforest merge of accounts (although it does not explicitly state this anywhere in the documentation). My question is - what is the easiest way for me to merge these accounts? Ultimately all I really need (I think) is for the SID of CD2\user1 to be added to the SIDHistory of CD1\user1 - is there a tool that supports this? Computer accounts and profiles are not a concern for this scenario. Group migration is unlikely to be an issue either - CD2\user1 is usually granted resource access through membership of a group on CD1.

Heartbeat won't start up from a cold boot when a failed node is present

I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. Let's say one node is down... The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps cross over cable on eth1 and have access to a IP camera LAN on eth0 The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource. I have to manually restart heartbeat by "sudo service heartbeat restart" to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start? The latest update of Windows Live Messenger is an msp added to the package. I want to patch a msp into an msi. (To get the msp and msi's I did the following Use resource hacker to open up wlsetup-all.exe In the left hand tree browse to PACKAGE Right click PACKAGE, save PACKAGE resources Save to a new temp folder Eg. D:\temp\package.rc This will output a whole lot of .bin files These are just cab files so we need to do a mass rename “ren *.bin *.cab” Once done select all cab files and extract to a new sub folder \extracted In \extracted you will see all the msi, msp and 7z files you need) I try to apply the msp directly with no result msiexec /p messenger.msp /a messenger.msi I also try doing a admin install with nothing being extracted.

Installing Domain Controller on Hyper-V Host

Given a resource limited setup consisting of 2 host machines (HyperV-01 and HyperV-02), is it OK to put the domain controllers in parent partition, instead of their own VM? The main reason is that if the DCs go into a child partition, starting from cold on both machines could lead to a bit of an issue, as there'd be no DCs around until well after both parents have booted. I'm guessing this might cause undesirable effects. Am I correct to be worried about joining the host systems to a domain that's only on VMs? The biggest drawback I've heard so far is that if AD gets heavily used, its resources could cut into HyperV's. I'm not concerned about that for this deployment. Any other suggestions? (Besides finding a 3rd machine and running AD on it.)

Need help configurating my Tomcat server

I just reinstalled my entire server, and now I can't seem to get my JSP-based website to work on Tomcat anymore. I use the same server.xml file, which worked perfectly before the reinstallation, but no longer. decrypting AES files in an apache module?

I have a client with a security policy compliance requirement to encrypt certain files on disk. The obvious way to do this is with Device-mapper and an AES crypto module However the current system is setup to generate individual files that are encrypted. What are my options for decrypting files on-the-fly in apache? I see that mod_ssl and mod_session_crypto do encryption/decryption or something similar but not exactly what I am after. I could imagine that a PerlSetOutputFilter would work with a suitable Perl script configured, and I also see mod_ext_filter so I could just fork a unix command and decrypt the file, but they both feel like a hack. I am kind of surprised that there is no mod_crypto available...or am I missing something obvious here? Presumably resource-wise the perl filter is the way to go?

setting nproc in /etc/security/limit.conf prevents ssh login

I am trying to use /etc/security/limit.conf on Linux (Debian) to limit the number of processes per user. for starters, I tried to limit my own user processes by adding this to /etc/security/limit.conf: omry hard nproc 100 this locked my user out of ssh. I could open new processes (verified with su omry), but could not log into ssh with that user : sshd reported this in it's log: fatal: setreuid 1000: Resource temporarily unavailable also, I am certain my user is not running anything near 100 processes (actually 6). what can be the reason for this?

Redirect some URL requests to CloudFront and the rest direct to the normal server?

Say I have two types of URL requests that must be handled by my REST API: http://query.restapi.com/image.png?apikey=abc123 http://query.restapi.com/2.0/<apiKey>/resource.json?from=umi.us_census00.state_geometry Is it possible to redirect only some URL requests for static images (ie., regex: *.png?.*) to take advantage of CloudFront's caching and have the rest of the requests go directly to the normal EC2 server (or at least take a speedier indirect route to the normal EC2 server?). Perhaps the added request time for the misses to CloudFront is irrelevant to worry about? Or perhaps my situation is not best to use for CloudFront? I understand I will need to make DNS change where the current URL requests having http://query.restapi.com/some.png?apikey=0123 get redirected to http://d1234.cloudfront.net/some.png, but I am hoping there is some way for just redirecting static .png requests to take advantage of CloudFront?

Downloading attachments to directory with IMAP in PHP, randomly works

I found PHP code online to download attachments to a directory using IMAP from here. http://www.nerdydork.com/download-pop3imap-email-attachments-with-php.html I modified it slightly changing $structure = imap_fetchstructure($mbox, $jk); $parts = ($structure->parts); to $structure = imap_fetchstructure($mbox, $jk); $parts = ($structure); to get it to run properly, as otherwise I got an error about how stdClass doesn't define a property called $parts. Doing that, I was able to download all the attachments. I tested it again recently though, and it didn't work. Well, it didn't work 6 times, worked the 7th, and then hasn't worked since. I'm thinking it has something to do with me screwing up the parts handling, since count($parts) keeps returning 1 for each message, so it's not finding any attachments I think. Since it downloaded the attachments at one point with no issues, I feel confident that the area things are getting screwed up is right here. Before this block of code is a for loop that goes through each message in the box, and after it is loop that just goes through $parts for each imap structure. Thanks for any help you can provide. I looked at the imap_fetchstructure page on php.net and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Edit: I just double-checked the folder after typing up my question and it all popped up. I feel like I'm going nuts. I hadn't run the code since a few minutes before I started typing this, and it doesn't make sense to me that it would take this long to trigger. I have some 800 messages in the mailbox, but I figured since it printed my statement at the very end of the PHP that all of the file creation work was done.

Logging another person off in Windows 7 using Task Manager

Under WinXP, I could use Task Manager's Users tab to log off my wife's account which she always leaves logged in so I don't have to log in to her account and log it out. It's an older machine so I used that trick to free up every resource I could which might potentially slow down the game I'm playing at the time. I recently upgraded the machine to Win7 and when I try the same trick, I get an access denied popup. My logged in account does have Admin rights, so is it as simple as runing Task Manager "as an Administrator" in order to allow this? If so, how can I pull up Task Manager (other than the standard CTRL-ALT-DELETE) to have it pop up with Admin rights in order to log her account off in this manner?

How are server part of the Domain and How are Database stored in the Server or Domain? How does a new server be able to connect to existing database server to get all the data needed. I tried to find this information in the web but I am not really finding a good resource. It may be because these is really basic information. Microsoft Cluster or Oracle Fail Safe error

Trying to get Oracle Database 10g to work on Microsoft cluster (using Oracle Fail Safe, not RAC). Everything installed, but when trying to verify group or add database to group I get following error: FS-10220: Network name MSK00-NST01-1 maps to IP address 10.1.11.74 in the cluster resource but maps to IP address 10.1.1.74 on the system MSK00-NST01-1 is cluster name, 10.1.11.74 is first node IP, 10.1.1.74 is second node IP. Oracle documentation says "The cluster and the system must have the same IP address mapping for a network name. Check that either the network name server or the local host file has the same IP address mapping as the cluster." Where is the error - in Oracle configuration or in cluster configuration? What are possible ways to correct it? Thanks a lot for any ideas.

First time setting up a MySQL database.

In trying to learn how to work with the LAMP stack, I've hit a wall with MySQL. I can't seem to find a good reference for the first time setup of MySQL to be used with Apache and python. So, my question is four-fold: 1) Under what circumstances should I create my first database. That is, what user do I use (Apache's http user? root?) 2)How do permissions work? 3) Do I have to do anything on the MySQL side to make MySQL talk to Apache, or MySQL to talk to Python/Django? 4) Is there a good resource online that describes setting all of this up? I've found a bunch for using a database once it's in place, but none for the initial setup? Notes: I'm trying to run my LAMP stack on a dedicated little box for testing/learning purposes only, so I don't have access to any DBA that could help me, as much as I'd like one.

Windows 7 stopped connecting to samba share

I have a problem with Windows 7 Home connecting to samba on linux server. It's worked fine for a year and without any changes in configuration or updates it suddenly stopped working. The strangest thing for me is that it stopped working for no reason that I could think of. After a few minutes after trying to connect I get: \\ip is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Other computers in that network (XP machines) connect to samba without any problem. I've tried adding LmCompatibilityLevel as described here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/75-63-windows-samba-issue , but it didn't help.

Virtual Machine files on ramdisk doesn't run faster than on physical disk

I installed total 36G memory (4x8G + 2x2G) in the host (Windows 7) and I used ImDisk to create a 32G ramdisk and format it to NTFS file system. Then I copied the virtual machine (in VMware Workstation format) folder, including vmx, vmdk, etc... to the new created ram disk. Then I tried to power on it in VMware Workstation. What made me surprised is that the performance is not better than before. It cost almost the same time to power on the Windows 7 VM. I check the Resource Monitor in the Windows 7 host, and the statistics of CPU, disk, network are rather normal. The memory has reported 3000+ hard fault/sec when guest OS boot then drop to 0 after the guest powered on. Any idea about this issue? I had thought the performance of ramdisk will be better than physical disk in this case. Am I wrong? Thanks.
