• MySQL Enterprise Monitor 3.0.11 has been released

  We are pleased to announce that MySQL Enterprise Monitor 3.0.11 is now available for download on the My Oracle Support (MOS) web site. It will also be available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud in about 1 week. This is a maintenance release that includes a few new features and fixes a number of bugs. You can find more information on the contents of this release in the change log. You will find binaries for the new release on My Oracle Support. Choose the "Patches & Updates" tab, and then choose the "Product or Family (Advanced Search)" side tab in the "Patch Search" portlet. You will also find the binaries on the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud in approximately 1 week. Choose "MySQL Database" as the Product Pack and you will find the Enterprise Monitor along with other MySQL products. • Amazon Kindle - Whispersync implementation?

  For those who are not aware of Kindle's whispersync, here is how it works (from amazon.com): "...Whispersync synchronizes the bookmarks and furthest page read among devices registered to the same account. Whispersync is on by default to ensure a seamless reading experience for a book read across multiple Kindles." Can anyone give some details on how the Whispersync feature is implemented in Kindle and in the Backend of Amazon? I am guessing this implementation involves a very simple hashmap for each user account. Each hashmap maps Books with satellite information about the book. Satellite information contains bookmarks, furthest page read, device on which it was read, etc.. Thanks!

• root and home are on seperate partitions, but home still uses up space on root?

  When installing Ubuntu 12.10 for the first time, I made sure /home had it's own partition, gave it about 185GB, and gave root ~10GB. Now root is almost full after a few days and I've noticed that root is as big as /home and some additional MB from some actual root files. Note that I deleted some unused files in /home to make sure it really affects how much space is used in root, and it clearly does. (checked in gparted) I've also made sure the files I am talking about are actually in /home/myname/ and not just in root's home. df -h spits out this information: df: `/root/.gvfs': Permission denied Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb2 9.2G 7.9G 908M 90% / udev 3.9G 12K 3.9G 1% /dev tmpfs 1.6G 932K 1.6G 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 3.9G 6.4M 3.9G 1% /run/shm none 100M 112K 100M 1% /run/user /dev/sdb3 184G 4.9G 170G 3% /home /dev/sdb4 729G 87G 642G 12% /media/mave/Storage I cut out my windows partitions as I don't see any relevance. But is there any other research paper that is publicly available for designing the brain games ? Any equation or data that can help? Or what characteristics a brain game should have ? • Show Ubuntu logo in Byobu (tmux) status bar?

  For some reason my Byobu (tmux) status bar is showing TAB instead of the ubuntu logo. This: where it should be this: I've tried installing some different fonts, but have not corrected the issue yet. Any ideas? Further information: sudo apt-get install ttf-ubuntu-font-family Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done ttf-ubuntu-font-family is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Update: fc-list on my computer shows all the fonts with the prefix /usr/share/fonts/ e.g., /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/UbuntuMono-R.ttf: Ubuntu Mono:style=Regular But the same command on a working system shows fonts listed thus: Ubuntu Mono:style=Bold Italic Perhaps it's a font location problem?

• How to organize my site's file system properly?

  Doing some reading on Stack Overflow, I've found a lot of information suggesting that proper organization of a file system is crucial to a well-written web app. One of the key pieces of evidence is high-frequency references to "separation of concerns" in questions related to keeping programs organized. Now, I've found some information on organizing file systems (Filesystem Hierarchy Standard) from 2004. It raises only two concerns: first, the standard's a bit dated, so I believe it may be possible to do better given the changes in technology over the past 8 years; second, and most important, my application is very small compared to an entire Linux distro. I think that the file system should be organized very differently because of that. Here's what I'm looking at, currently: /scripts, /databases, /www -> /dev, /production -> login, router, admin pages, /sites -> content types, static pages /modules, /includes, /css, /media -> /module-specific-media

• Saving mobile application data when no service?

  Say I have a mobile application that allows users to enter information which is then uploaded to a central location. I had planned on building this using only HTML5 and javascript (non-native app), but I'm assuming if someone is in an area where there is no service they simply will not be able to use the app. As a work around would it be possible to write a native app that saves the information on the device and then uploads it whenever service returns? If so, is it possible to write a native app entirely in HTML5 and Javascript that does this?

• How do you conquer the challenge of designing for large screen real-estate?

  This question is a bit more subjective, but I'm hoping to get some new perspective. I'm so used to designing for a certain screen size (typically 1024x768) that I find that size to not be a problem. Expanding the size to 1280x1024 doesn't buy you enough screen real estate to make an appreciable difference, but will give me a little more breathing room. Basically, I just expand my "grid size" and the same basic design for the slightly smaller screen still works. However, in the last couple of projects my clients were all using 1080p (1920x1080) screens and they wanted solutions to use as much of that real estate as possible. 1920 pixels across provides just under twice the width I am used to, and the wide screen makes some of my old go to design approaches not to work as well. The problem I'm running into is that when presented with so much space, I'm confronted with some major problems. How many columns should I use? The wide format lends itself to a 3 column split with a 2:1:1 split (i.e. the content column bigger than the other two). However, if I go with three columns what do I do with that extra column? How do I make efficient use of the screen real estate? There's a temptation to put everything on the screen at once, but too much information actually makes the application harder to use. White space is important to help make sense of complex information, but too much makes related concepts look too separate. I'm usually working with web applications that have complex data, and visualization and presentation is key to making sense of the raw data. When your user also has a large screen (at least 24"), some information is out of eye sight and you need to move the pointer a long distance. How do you make sure everything that's needed stays within the visual hot points? Simple sites like blogs actually do better when the width is constrained, which results in a lot of wasted real estate. I kind of wonder if having the text box and the text preview side by side would be a big benefit for the admin side of that type of screen? (1:1 two column split). For your answers, I know almost everything in design is "it depends". What I'm looking for is: General principles you use How your approach to design has changed I'm finding that i have to retrain myself how to work with this different format. Every bump in resolution I've worked through to date has been about 25%: 640 to 800 (25% increase), 800 to 1024 (28% increase), and 1024 to 1280 (25% increase). However, the jump from 1280 to 1920 is a good 50% increase in space--the equivalent from jumping from 640 straight to 1024. There was no commonly used middle size to help learn lessons more gradually.

  A few days ago I was browsing a particular commerical web site, the site crashed and I encountered the "White Screen of Death". The detailed dump showed me what the site was using:zendMySqlPHPMageMagentoBesides all this detailed information of use to a hacker, the copyright on Magento cited a date of 2009.  Does this means that out of date software was in use?There is a more basic point - in your site please ensure that fatal errors are trapped and redirected to a page that gives away no information useful to a hacker. I suggest also that you provide a means for an administrator to simulate an error to check the error handling.

• Best way of accessing data on different pages

  I'm looking for a way to load data into properties/variables etc and have this information accessible to all the pages of my app. I want the information to be loaded via a background thread to keep UI thread free. Some of the pages will have various properties of their controls binding to these global properties. Here is what I tried. Created a static class. All pages could access the data but can't bind. Changed the static class to a Singleton and used DependencyProperty's. All pages could access data and binding worked fine but cross-threading issues when accessing via background threads. I have read in various places on this subject but haven't really come up with the best method yet for my situation.

• Getting "System program problem detected" pops up regularly after dist-upgrade

  This started to happen immediately after I had rebooted the first time after doing a system upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10. It first starts with a dialogue that says "System program problem detected". Then when I try to hit 'report problem' not much happens. I am led through a dialogue that always ends up the problem cannot be solved. I am running a MacBook1,1 I am aware this is not a lot of information, however I'm not sure which information I need to publish and how should I obtain it to debug this problem. Here's a screenshot!

• How to detect GLSL warnings?

  After compiling a shader with glCompileShader, I can call glGetShaderiv with GL_COMPILE_STATUS to check if the shader compiled successfully. I can also call glGetShaderInfoLog to get information about possible errors, warnings or other info. The information log returned by this function is unspecified. In a tool where users can write their own shaders, I would like to print all errors and warnings from the compilation, but nothing if no warnings or errors were found. The problem is that the GL_COMPILE_STATUS returns only false if the compilation failed and true otherwise. If no problems were found, some drivers return empty info log from glGetShaderInfoLog, but some drivers can return something else such as "No errors.", which I do not want to print to the user. How is this problem generally solved?

• Display monitor info via command line

  Is there a way to query monitor information from command line? For example, get monitor model, similar to e.g. what lspci does for graphic card info, or whether it's currently on or off, things like that. If possible, what kinds of basic information such as the above can be easily gathered? For example, is it possible to determine if monitor is in portrait or landscape position? Or if it has built-in speakers or not? Command line is the preference, but if there's a GUI method, I'd like to hear about it, too.

• Is it possible to track an outsourced adwords campaign?

  We have a site that is paying a 3rd party to run adwords campaigns on our behalf. They do this using their own Adwords account and so we are unable to link it to our Google Analytics account. We do have our own Adwords account for the site which is linked but the majority of campaigns are being run by this 3rd party. At the moment, in our Adwords reports (ie the Adwords section within Google Analytics) we are seeing that for the majority of visits the campaign and keyword data is not set. I am assuming that this is because even though the visit is being recognised as coming from an Adwords account, because it is not the Adwords account linked to our Analytics account, we don't get sent the campaign and keyword information. Is this correct and if so is there a way that we can start tracking this information so that we can see for ourselves how the campaigns are performing? Many thanks

• What are different ways to reduce latency between a server and a web application? [closed]

  this is a question about a web application that provides SOAP web services. For the sake of this question, this web app is hosted on a server SERVER B which is located in California. We have an automated, scheduled, process running on a server SERVER A, located in New York. This scheduled process is supposed to send SOAP messages to SERVER B every so often, but this process typically dies soon after starting. We have now been told by the vendor that reason why the process dies is because of the latency between SERVER A and SERVER B. The data traffic is routed through many diffent public networks. There is no dedicated line between SERVER A and SERVER B. As a result I have been asked to look into ways to reduce the latency between SERVER A and SERVER B. So I wanted to ask, what are the different ways to reduce latency in a situation like this? For example, would it help to switch from HTTPS to some other secure protocol? (the thought here is that perhaps some other alternative would require fewer handshakes than HTTPS). Or would a VPN help? If a VPN would reduce the latency, how would it do that? NOTE: I am not looking for an explicit answer that would work in my specific situation. I am more like looking just for a simple list of what technologies could be used for this. I will still have to evaluate the technologies and discuss them internally with others, so the list would just be a starting point. Here I am assuming that there exists very few ways to reduce latency between two servers that communicate across public networks using HTTPS. Feel free to correct me if this assumption is wrong and please ask if there is a need for specific information. NOTE 2: A list of technologies is a specific answer to the question I stated in the title. NOTE 3: Its rather dumb to close this question when it is after all about me looking for information and furthermore this information can clearly be useful for others. • Is ubuntu-geoip (GeoClue) is used for tracking?

  I am happily learning Ubuntu more closely now. I came across the process ubuntu-geoip-provider in system monitor. Is is used for tracking or for gathering nearest server info, or for syncing time with Internet, or perhaps for all these things? I searched for it but not enough information came through. If it is tracking, what kind of info it is gathering, and why it is doing that? It is based here: /usr/lib/ubuntu-geoip I just wanted more detailed information for that. Also, can this be disabled? Is disabling recommended, or would doing so cause dependency-related (or other) problems?

• Where do I find details of Ubuntu Firefox "install" offers?

  When I visit some sites (so far Tweetdeck, Tumblr, Launchpad, Google Docs) in Firefox, I get a "Would you like install {whatever}" popup from Ubuntu. My options are only yes, "not now" and "don't ask me again." I don't see any way to get more information about these installations. I can't quite tell if they'd be browser plugins or regular applications (the Ubuntu icon suggests the latter) and I don't see any indication that I can get more information about one of these applications before I install it. I'm hesitant to click "yes" just to see what happens. What is going on here?

• Parsing glGetShaderInfoLog() to get error info. Is this reliable, or is there a better way?

  I want to get a list of errors and their line numbers so I can display the error information different to how it's formatted in the error string, and also show the line in error. It looks easy enough to just parse the result of glGetShaderInfoLog(), look for "ERROR:" then read the next number up to : and then the next, and then the error description up to the next newline. But the OpenGL docs say "Application developers should not expect different OpenGL implementations to produce identical information logs." Which makes me worry that my code may behave incorrectly on different systems. I don't need them to be identical, I just need them to follow the same format. So is there a better way to get a list of errors with line number separate, is it safe to assume that they'll always follow the "ERROR: 0:123:" format, or is there simply no reliable way to do this? Thanks!
