• Image coding library

  Is there any good library for lossless image encoding/decoding that has compression rate more or less similar to PNG but decoding to raw RGB bitmap data would be much faster than PNG? Also alpha transparency is needed, but not essential because, alpha channel could be taken from separate image. Original problem lies in slowness of reading and decoding PNG files on iPhone using standard libraries. Obvious and the simples solution would have been storing raw RGB bitmap data, but then size of unpacked ipa is too large - 4 times larger than PNG files. So, I am trying to find some compromise solution.

• Difference between "traditional" COM and COM+ (in Component Services)

  By the "traditional" way I mean registering the DLL in registry. There seems to be another method to set up it by going to mmc-Component Services-COM+ Applications and adding the .tlb file. I have a COM library that supports both methods. When it installs, it registers itself in the registry as a COM component and it works fine. However, when I added the .tlb file using the Component Services method, the behavior seems to be different and it starts giving out errors. I suspect it has something to do with marshaling and inter-process object transfer? (Sorry, I'm really a noob in the COM area) Can anyone point me to a good resource to clear my understanding?

• Ooutsourcing design/programming (taxes!)

  Hello, I have a full time job, but I also have some ideas in mind -- and I want to outsource some code development and design to Russia. I have friends there who help me to do that -- they'll do the development, provide me invoice (which is just description of our terms, because we decided on flat rate monthly fee), and I need to wire them money. So, I do not have business entity. If I'll pay them, am I am required to pay taxes? Or do I deduct my business expenses (say $30K/year) from my earnings (say $50K/year), and pay taxes only on what's left ($20K to be precise)? Any rules on that? Am I limited with something here? • Connect ps/2->usb keyboard to linux?

  I have a lovely ancient ergonomic keyboard (no name SK - 6000) connected via a DIN-ps/2 adapter to a ps/2-usb adapter to my docking station. After Grub it stops working. It takes either suspending and waking up or replugging it while Linux is running to get it to work. No extra kernel modules get loaded for this. When it works and I restart without power off, it will work immediately. • Streaming files from EventMachine handler?

  I am creating a streaming eventmachine server. I'm concerned about avoiding blocking IO or doing anything else to muck up the event loop. From what I've read, ruby's non-blocking IO can be used to stream files in a non-blocking way, or I can call next_tick, but I'm a little unclear about which of these approaches is preferable. Part of the problem is that I have not found a good explanation of non-blocking IO library functions in ruby. Short version: Assuming a long-lived network IO operation, several wall clock minutes of streaming per file, transfer, what is the best way to do this in eventmachine without gumming up the event loop? while 1 do file.read do |bytes| @conn.send_data bytes end end I understand that the above code will block and I'm wondering what to put in its place. Also, I cannot use the FileStreamer class that is part of eventmachine as is, because I need to manipulate the data after it's read but before it's sent. Thanks, Noah

  Hello again, I was doing some reading and have even gotten a "master" SPI working on my microcontroller. Here is my question, basically if the master wants to initialize a write to the slave we write to the SSPBUF, how do we control what the slave responds with? The datasheet doesn't seem really clear to me the order of events in that case. I.E. Master puts a char into the SSPBUF, this initiates the SPI module to send data to the slave, during the shift, the slave returns a byte. In the slave side, is there something that tells you you have incoming data, and you can write to your SSPBUF first, THEN accept the data? OR Do you have to write to the SSPBUF the first "return value" you want sent back before the master can have an opportunity to initiate a transfer?

  I am looking at the website. Trying to transfer selenium html to junit but could not get it to work because it keeps saying Error: Element not found. Maybe syntax error because I was able to break it down to the shortest path in firebug but still could not get to compile..What do you do in this case ? • Java/Swing: the fast/slow UI binding problem

  I need a way to bind UI indicators to rapidly-changing values. I have a class NumberCruncher which does a bunch of heavy processing in a critical non-UI thread, thousands of iterations of a loop per second, and some number of those result in changes to a set of parameters I care about. (think of them as a key-value store) I want to display those at a slower rate in the UI thread; 10-20Hz would be fine. How can I add MVC-style notification so that my NumberCruncher code doesn't need to know about the UI code/binding?

  As suggested by (among others) Kazi Manzur Rashid in this blog post, I am using ActionFilterAttributes to transfer model state from one request to another when redirecting. However, I find myself unable to write a unit test that test the behavior of these attributes. As an example, this what I want the test for the ImportModelStateAttribute to do: Setup the filterContext so that TempData[myKey] contains some fake "exported" ModelState (that is, a ModelStateDictionary I create myself, and add one error to) Make ModelState contain one model error. Call OnActionExecuting. Verify the two dictionaries are merged, and ModelState now contains both errors. I'm at a loss already on the second step.

Anybody has experience with hotmail, yahoo (web.de, gmx.net) and similar webmail companies blocking your emails because "too many from the same source in a period of time" have been sent to them? Generation loss is created because each time a lossy algorithm is applied new information will be deemed "unnecessary" and is discarded. How could an algorithm use this property to detect the transcoding of audio. 128 kbps LAME mp3 transcoded to 320 kbps LAME mp3 (I Feel You, Depeche Mode) 10.8 MB.   I've been involved in some interviews at work recently, and having seen a few CVs, I've been thinking of my own. I wonder how I might rate my proficiency at the various technologies I've worked with on some sort of simple scale: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert. I've been doing C# for a few years now, but I'd hesitate to call myself "expert" particularly (partly because surely I haven't been doing it long enough, and partly because I can't bring myself to be so bold as to say I'm expert at anything). I think I probably was expert at VB back when I got into programming, but any VB skills I had will have deteriorated by now.   Hi I used config given in this http://www.webtatic.com/blog/2008/04/page-level-caching-with-nginx/ for page level caching of php content the problem is that the cached page is saving in gzip format and it returning same gzip content to browser. I need the o/p like this "12:15:37 12:15:47" (Its coming for 1st time when the page is not cached) after that if request is resend it is returning ‹??????34²26±24à23Œ¸¸?`Î9”??? • Releasing an app - Developed on one account, releasing/approving on another

  Hi there, We have developed an application for a company who want to release it under their own account. It has been developed on our account and has had provisioning profiles attached to it from our own account. What is the best way to do this? Do I have to send them the xCode project and talk them through how to attack a provisioning profile to the project? Or can I just get their login details and create a provisioning profile from the Mac in the office and do it for them? Or is there a "transfer to different account" option? Many thanks!

  Hello, I am having the same problem as described below. http://marc.info/?l=php-general&m=124104032703506 The guy answered his own question by: "Sorry, didn't pay attention to the registered streams :-( You need to install a PHP package with ssl or compile it with --with-openssl." What does that mean? I'm fairly new to all this stuff and I don't quite understand what he was talking about, (e.g. registered streams, ssl). We have another server that has SSL. Does he mean that if I just transfer to that server, problem solved? Or is there anything else I need to consider? Can you please help me out? Any help is much appreciated :)

I have generated the train cases, but i dont know for sure what are the validation and test sets, the teacher says: 70% should be train cases, 10% will be test cases and the rest 20% should be validation cases. Since I'm new in the freelancing field, I was wondering how much you would charge for a junior programmer to do some work. Like many, I've started freelancing for website.
