• Problem with dropdown in IE8 Compatibility Mode

  Hello, I am having a problem with my site in IE8 Compatibility mode. Below is a URL where you get the basic idea of what my websites dropdowns look like. The dropdowns are done in CSS and when you hover over one dropdown the submenu for the dropdown expands under the dropdown to the right of it. It works correctly in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and normal IE8. But when you go to compatibility mode it isn't working correctly. • APC not recommended for production?

  I have started having problems with my VPS in the way that it would faill to serve the pages on all the websites. It just showed a blank page, or offered to download the php file ( luckily the code was not in the download file :) ). The server was still running, but this seemed to be a problem with PHP, since i could login into WHM. If i did a apache restart, the sites would work again. After some talks with the server support they told me this is a problem with the APC extension witch they considered to be old and not recommended for production servers. So they removed it for now, to see if the same kind of fails would continue to appear. I haven't read anywhere that APC could have some problems or that its not always recommended to use, quite the contrary ... everywhere people are saying to always use it. The APC extension was installed ssh and is the latest version. Edit: They also dont recomend MemCache and say that a more reliable extension would be eAccelerator

  Hi, I'm interested in web development and by that I mean the bigger projects like facebook or twitter. I know the basics of java, css, php and mysql. I know there is a lot more out there. I read about it. But I don't know what the purpose is and how to put in place. Things like: Scribe, thrift, casandra, Unix/Linux, shell/perl/python scripting, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, non-relational NoSQL datastores, JVM, nginx I want to know why they need it, how they use it and what te purpose is. What I need is a book like technical background of facebook for dummies or so. Are there any books or websites that explain this from scratch? Thank you!

• Rails architecture questions

  I'm building a Rails site that, among other things, allows users to build their own recipe repository. Recipes are entered either manually or via a link to another site (think epicurious, cooks.com, etc). I'm writing scripts that will scrape a recipe from these sites given a link from a user, and so far (legal issues notwithstanding) that part isn't giving me any trouble. However, I'm not sure where to put the code that I'm writing for these scraper scripts. My first thought was to put it in the recipes model, but it seems a bit too involved to go there; would a library or a helper be more appropriate? Also, as I mentioned, I'm building several different scrapers for different food websites. It seems to me that the elegant way to do this would be to define an interface (or abstract base class) that determines a set of methods for constructing a recipe object given a link, but I'm not sure what the best approach would be here, either. How might I build out these OO relationships, and where should the code go?

  I am building a web application that is dependent upon several third-party libraries. What is a good strategy for making sure that you're always using the most fully patched versions? A simple method would be to keep the versions written down and visit the websites at regular intervals, but I am looking for some way to get the information 'pushed' to me if possible. I figured that there might be others out there who have needed to do the same thing and have worked out a good solution. • jquery toggle+paginate+multiple instances

  Hi, I'm a jquery newbie - wanted to ask what might be the best strategy for achieving what I am after as I think it uses a mix of jquery functions : If list of items exceeds 5 items a 'more' link appears which when toggled will reveal the rest of the items. If items list is 5 or less no 'more' link is shown. Hide button also at bottom of long full revealed list. (perhaps this is toggle+pagination?) And then also that this can be used in multiple instances, as it is for multiple category menu's.(to be used in typical indexhibit websites structure like http://mikeyburton.com/) link 1 link 2 link 3 link 4 link 5 link 6 link 7 link 8 more Any help or links greatly appreciated.

• Does Python Django support custom SQL and denormalized databases with no Foreign Key relationships?

  I've just started learning Python Django and have a lot of experience building high traffic websites using PHP and MySQL. What worries me so far is Python's overly optimistic approach that you will never need to write custom SQL and that it automatically creates all these Foreign Key relationships in your database. The one thing I've learned in the last few years of building Chess.com is that its impossible to NOT write custom SQL when you're dealing with something like MySQL that frequently needs to be told what indexes it should use (or avoid), and that Foreign Keys are a death sentence. Percona's strongest recommendation was for us to remove all FKs for optimal performance. Is there a way in Django to do this in the models file? create relationships without creating actual DB FKs? Or is there a way to start at the database level, design/create my database, and then have Django reverse engineer the models file?

• Writing a PHP web crawler using cron

  Hi all I have written myself a web crawler using simplehtmldom, and have got the crawl process working quite nicely. It crawls the start page, adds all links into a database table, sets a session pointer, and meta refreshes the page to carry onto the next page. That keeps going until it runs out of links That works fine however obviously the crawl time for larger websites is pretty tedious. I wanted to be able to speed things up a bit though, and possibly make it a cron job. Any ideas on making it as quick and efficient as possible other than setting the memory limit / execution time higher?

  If you have ever used a new release of either Chrome or Safari, you know that when you add a new tab, the default screen is a grid like setup with your most favorite links sitting there waiting to be clicked on. The URL I designed like this: http://example.com/site A list of all sites which under control http://example.com/site/{id} A brief overview of select site with ID id http://example.com/site/{id}/user User list of target site http://example.com/site/{id}/item A list of items sold on target site http://example.com/site/{id}/item/{iid} Item detailed information # ...... something similar As you can see, nearly all URL are need the site_id. And in almost all views, I have to do some common jobs like query Site model against database with the site_id. Also, I have to pass site_id whenever I invoke request.route_path. • postgresql duplicate table names best practice

  My company has a handful of apps that we deploy in the websites we build. Recently a very old app needed to be included along side a newer app and there was a conflict w/ a duplicate table name needed to be used by both apps. We are now in the process of updating an old app and there will be some DB updates. I'm curious what people consider best practice (or how do you do it) to help ensure these name collisions don't happen. I've looked at schema's but not sure if thats the right path we want to take. As the documentation prescribes, I don't want to "wire" a particular schema name into an application and if I add schema's to the user search path how would it know which table I was referring to if two schema's have the same table name. although, maybe I'm reading to much into this. Any insights or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

• In order to bypass a website's login screen, can you load a link with a username and password?

  I am relatively new to web development, and I was hoping I could get some pointers about the feasibility of a feature I would like to implement. Is it possible to have a url link that you can click on, that can contain login credentials for the website it is linking to, so as to bypass that websites login screen? In other words, can I make a link from my website to facebook, that would allow me to login right in to my facebook, from any computer? Meaning, if I don't have cookies to store my login info in, is it possible to login still? This is just a conceptual question, so any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

• Extracting script tags from webpage using user script

  My userscript has the following code var scrpt=document.getElementsByTagName('script'); i included this to know the number of scripts of each page i access. This works fine with some websites but for some sites i am not getting all the scripts present. I installed the user script in both firefox and chrome the issue is the number of scripts for the same site is different in both browsers. For example when i access this link Help extracting text from html tag with Java and Regex i am getting the number of scripts in firefox as:17 and in chrome as:15 but when i view the page source there are 22 script tags Please help me to slove the problem. I even tried document.scripts but still i get the same result.

  I get the error message 'Can't create deploy folder.' when I try to profile a remote websites on WAWS. Actions taken: Downloaded and installed the dotTrace Profiler 5.5 from the JetBrains website Downloaded the dotTrace.Performance.Remote version 5.5.0 from Nuget Published the website to WAWS via Visual Studio 2013 Started the dotTrace application as Administrator Connected to the remote _https://subdomain.azurwebsites.net/AgentService.asmx. See image: http://1drv.ms/1nF5Cyh Selected the w3wp process and pressed Run Got the error message 'Can't create deploy folder'. • Python: Data Object or class

  I enjoy all the python libraries for scraping websites and I am experimenting with BeautifulSoup and IMDB just for fun. As I come from Java, I have some Java-practices incorporated into my programming styles. I am trying to get the info of a certain movie, I can either create a Movie class or just use a dictionary with keys for the attributes. My question is, should I just use dictionaries when a class will only contain data and perhaps almost no behaviour? In other languages creating a type will help you enforce certain restrictions and because of type checks the IDE will help you program, this is not always the case in python, so what should I do? Should I resort to creating a class only when there's both, behaviour and data? Or create a movie class even though it'll probably be just a data container? This all depends on your model, in this particular case either one is fine but I'm wondering about what's a good practice.

• Bringing specific results to the front using one MySQL query.

  I'm setting up my geolocation feature which lists out all the countries in order of name. However, most websites have it set up where the popular countries (such as United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia) are at the front of the list (are shown first rather than in their assigned places). Is it possible to achieve this using the same MySQL query that I am already running to select them? SELECT * FROM `global_flags` ORDER BY `country` Is there a better alternative somewhere? Perhaps something that can reorganize the results after the database has already been queried? I don't want to exclude those results and then manually type them at the beginning because that would waste more space in the file.

They give you javascript code that you embed in your pages (whichever event you wish to track) and voila..you're done. I have written a native application for Android phones, which is actually an adaptation of the actual web site. Now, I am required to setup Analytics and tracking for this native application. Question: How to do setup a native application for Analytics? We have Java Script code(not Google Analytics but for some other engine) that works for the original web site. Is there a way to incorporate that in the native application? I know Android supports Java Script via WebViews(Webkit);my application does not have webviews, it is native! • crossdomain cookie using iframe, how?

  I searched a lot on this topic, but didn't really found a solid answer to this. I need to set a cookie from any domain (out of my control), lets say "Domain B" to my main domain, lets say "Domain A", and be able to read the cookie also, without exiting Domain B. kinda like Facebook connect for websites, or Snap.com, and others of the sort. how it that done? If I look at lets say http://ajaxian.com/ I see Firecookie shows cookies from many domains being used on that website, and I really wanna know how it's achieved.

  Like a lot of people on Stack Overflow I love to read books about programming, almost as much as I love to read the lists that people add onto their websites, Blog's and this very website. However, for every gem there are a thousand turds, and to one developer a gem could just be a shiny turd to another. Whilst there are hundreds of book questions on this website asking users to recommend books that they have loved I have decided (after looking for a similar question and not finding it) to create a list of books that users have detested. After all, if we're going to fork out money for these books it'd be a good idea to get both positive and negative aspects out there. Please refer to a specific book, and with it add an image of either the latest version or the version you have read. Also, if you have the time please comment on the answers to provide your experiences with the books.

• Does anyone know of a vim plugin or script to convert special characters to their corresponding HTML

  I develop websites for corporate clients, so we see the ®, ™, etc. chars a whole lot. Sometimes I paste in huge blocks of copy, which might even contain pretty quotes (“ ”) or other strange characters from word processors. So, my question is this: Does anyone know of a vim plugin or script that can, in one fell swoop, convert all these characters to html entities? I think this covers all the bases of the entities it would be nice to have: http://web.forret.com/tools/charmap.asp So, for the characters above, they would be replaced with &reg;, &trade;, &ldquo;, &rdquo;, etc. I tried the htmlspecialchars vimball (http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=2377), but no dice. It only performs its replacement like the PHP htmlsepcialchars function, replacing html-conflicting characters, and doesn't cover any additional special characters.

• Best way to merge two identical ASPNET web sites?

  We have two websites which only diference is in the design (Diferent images, styles, layouts..etc) but the web structure of files and cs code is the same so we want to simplify its manteinance... The actual structure would be: DefaultA.aspx DefaultA.aspx.cs DefaultB.aspx DefaultB.aspx.cs LoginA.aspx LoginA.aspx.cs LoginB.aspx LoginB.aspx.cs One idea would be changing the design differencies at runtime depending of the origin website, but we dont like much this because performance, abstraction in designing them and url confusion... Another one is sharing the cs (both aspx inheriting and using the same cs) file but we never have done or seen it done in any website before so we wonder if its a good aproach... What do you think? Any other way better in terms of performance vs development-ease?
