• How to allow remote connections to Flask?

  Inside the system, running on virtual machine, I can access the running server at 127.0.0.1:5000. Although the 'remote' address of the vm is 192.168.56.101 (ping and ssh work fine), I cannot access the server with 192.168.50.101:5000 neither from the virtual machine nor from the local one. I guess there's something preventing remote connections. Here's /etc/network/interfaces: auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.56.101 netmask 255.255.255.0 ufw is inactive. How do I fix this problem?

• Markdown, LaTeX combined in WYSIWYG editor. Is there any?

  I really like the way markdown is implemented in SE bunch of sites, where I can easily write code blocks, performing formatting or even use latex on some of sites like writing $\pi$. I also like how this online editor looks and feels. But it's all online. Is there any offline WYSIWYG analogs of notepag or WMD in Ubuntu that optionally supports pdf as an output format? Both markdown and latex desired. I desire to simultaneously use Markdown and LaTeX. I'm planing to use an editor for writing some technical stuff with math, but it's annoying to be constantly in "LaTeX-mode". So it would be awesome to immerse in LaTeX when I need formulas and use markdown when I need to speak on natural language. UPD. Almost all answers was quite useful, but none of them answers directly on my question. I'll accept @N.N. answer as a most complete.

• Gamification: designing cooperation in an RPG like game based on Scrum methodology

  I have implemented with 3 friends a gamified system at my work (development company) which builds an fantasy rpg game over scrum project methodology. Generally, the tasks are the missions, each player is represented by a character. They earn XPs for completing tasks and they advance to the next levels which gives them badges, titles and (this is in planning phase) new privileges (e.g. priority in choosing tasks). Since the very beginning we try to do everything to avoid rivalisation between players because it would ruin the project if the players started to compete. There are no explicit leaderboards, we also plan to give bonuses for helping other players. I have a feeling that this is still not enough to really encourage cooperation. I would like to ask You for any ideas that come to Your mind that would help.

  at the moment i'm running ubuntu server 12.04 on top of a virtual box running as service in M$ w7x64, I've configured the shares on fstab with E /media/E vboxsf auto,rw,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 the mount is ok drwxrwxrwx 1 knoker knoker 16384 Sep 1 20:02 E but i cant change the permissions inside of /media/E ,chmod runs but doesn't do nothing. on a specific case /media/E/Docs/Downloads i have dr-xr-xr-x 1 knoker knoker 163840 Sep 1 19:30 Downloads and since i cant seem to be able to change from linux i tried it on the windows, and all users listed have full control... • Number crunching algo for learning multithreading?

  I have never really implemented anything dealing with threads; my only experience with them is reading about them in my undergrad. So I want to change that by writing a program that does some number crunching, but splits it up into several threads. My first ideas for this hopefully simple multithreaded program were: Beal's Conjecture brute force based on my SO question. Bailey-Borwein-Plouffe formula for calculating Pi. Prime number brute force search As you can see I have an interest in math and thought it would be fun to incorporate it into this, rather than coding something such as a server which wouldn't be nearly as fun! But the 3 ideas don't seem very appealing and I have already done some work on them in the past so I was curious if anyone had any ideas in the same spirit as these 3 that I could implement?

• Prevent nautilus showing partition mounted in bash script

  In my bash script I mount partitions, check them, copy files to them, and unmount. When the script mounts the partition, Nautilus pops up with a Window showing the partition and stealing focus. This is something I want to avoid. Note: I know I can change the behaviour of this in System settings, Details, Removable media, Never prompt or start programs on media insertion, but I don't want to change the behaviour e.g. if a USB stick is plugged in, I just want to prevent it in my bash script. Actually this auto display doesn't seem consistent. If I do the exact same command from the terminal, Nautilus doesn't show, and I know there are other mounts in my script that don't show. So what could be causing this? Here's an example of the code: mkdir -p $target/home mount $target/home $homedev Thanks in advance

• Opensource showcase for MVC in Java Swing

  I've allready created small desktop CRUD applications using Java/Swing. In hindsight I'm not quite sure if the overall design of these applications is good. I've also done some reading on MVC and looked at different Swing-tutorials. My problem is, that I've got a very theroatical knowledge of MVC and on the other hand, most Swing-resources don't implement the MVC-pattern. Now I would like to get my hands dirty and see how MVC is implemented in Swing in a real-world-application. Are there any opensource project you could recommend? It would be also interesting to have more than one project, to see different approaches. Best fit would be a software, that uses a relational database in the backend, to see an overall design, that I can compare to my former applications.

  I am designing an application that has following flow: User designs a form using web application (J2EE backend application) The form is sent to mobile device (Android) Mobile device User fills out the form designed in 1. Results are synced with backend. One of my ideas is to create a common java UI library for creating the type of forms that I need. This library would also have a native renderers for different platforms (Web and Android would be implemented first). The whole point of it is to have a native experience on web and android side. Are there any existing solutions to meet the requirements that I have? Is it a good approach to achieve them?

• accessing c++ class members with luaplus

  i've implemented LuaPlus in my engine eventmanager successfully and really like the flexibility i gained. but i'm still not exactly where i want to by, because i can't link my c++ classes to a lua class. for example i have a Actor class in c++, and i want to be able to create the same class in lua and gain access to members with luaplus, but i can't figure how i can achieve that. Is this actually luaplus built in functionality, or do i have to write my own interface that exchanges data tables between c++ and lua? my current approach would be to fire an event in luascript that creates an new actor class in c++ code, and transfer its id and the data i need to back to lua. when i modify the data i send the modifications back to c++ code again, but i actually thought there's something in luaplus that exposes this functionality already.

• How to import in BIDS more than one SSIS package in one shot!

  Have you ever wanted to add more than one Integration Services existing package (e.g. 20 packages) in a SSIS project? Well, you may suppose that an Open Dialog supports multiple files selection to import more than one file at a time ... BIDS Open Dialog doesn’t allow this, you can just select a single file! Hence the loss of valuable time spent to import the packages one at a time. Few days ago I learned a trick that solves the problem, thanks to this post by Matt Masson. Just copy all the packages to import from Windows Explorer (Ctrl + C): Then just right click on the SSIS Packages folder of the Integration Services project and make a simple Past (CTRL + V): So “auto-magically” you’ll have all those packages imported in your Integration Services project!! What can I say... this feature was well hidden!

• HLSL Pixel Shader that does palette swap

  I have implemented a simple pixel shader which can replace a particular colour in a sprite with another colour. It looks something like this: sampler input : register(s0); float4 PixelShaderFunction(float2 coords: TEXCOORD0) : COLOR0 { float4 colour = tex2D(input, coords); if(colour.r == sourceColours[0].r && colour.g == sourceColours[0].g && colour.b == sourceColours[0].b) return targetColours[0]; return colour; } What I would like to do is have the function take in 2 textures, a default table, and a lookup table (both same dimensions). Grab the current pixel, and find the location XY (coords) of the matching RGB in the default table, and then substitute it with the colour found in the lookup table at XY. I have figured how to pass the Textures from C# into the function, but I am not sure how to find the coords in the default table by matching the colour. Could someone kindly assist? • Implications of Java 6 End of Public Updates for EBS Users

  The Support Roadmap for Oracle Java is published here: Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap The latest updates to that page (as of Sept. 19, 2012) state (emphasis added): Java SE 6 End of Public Updates Notice After February 2013, Oracle will no longer post updates of Java SE 6 to its public download sites. Existing Java SE 6 downloads already posted as of February 2013 will remain accessible in the Java Archive on Oracle Technology Network. Developers and end-users are encouraged to update to more recent Java SE versions that remain available for public download. For enterprise customers, who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 or older versions, long term support is available through Oracle Java SE Support . What does this mean for Oracle E-Business Suite users? EBS users fall under the category of "enterprise users" above.  Java is an integral part of the Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack, so EBS users will continue to receive Java SE 6 updates after February 2013. In other words, nothing will change for EBS users after February 2013.  EBS users will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6. These Java SE 6 updates will be made available to EBS users for the Extended Support periods documented in the Oracle Lifetime Support policy document for Oracle Applications (PDF): EBS 11i Extended Support ends November 2013 EBS 12.0 Extended Support ends January 2015 EBS 12.1 Extended Support ends December 2018 Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JRE 7 for Windows desktop clients? No. This upgrade will be highly recommended but currently remains optional. JRE 6 will be available to Windows users to run with EBS for the duration of your respective EBS Extended Support period.  Updates will be delivered via My Oracle Support, where you can continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JRE 6 desktop clients.  The certification of Oracle E-Business Suite with JRE 7 (for desktop clients accessing EBS Forms-based content) is in its final stages.  If you plan to upgrade your EBS desktop clients to JRE 7 when that certification is released, you can get a head-start on that today. Coexistence of JRE 6 and JRE 7 on Windows desktops The upgrade to JRE 7 will be highly recommended for EBS users, but some users may need to run both JRE 6 and 7 on their Windows desktops for reasons unrelated to the E-Business Suite. Most EBS configurations with IE and Firefox use non-static versioning by default. JRE 7 will be invoked instead of JRE 6 if both are installed on a Windows desktop. Mac users waiting for that certification may find this article useful: How to Reenable Apple Java 6 Plug-in for Mac EBS Users Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JDK 7 for EBS application tier servers? No. This upgrade will be highly recommended but will be optional for EBS application tier servers running on Windows, Linux, and Solaris.  You can choose to remain on JDK 6 for the duration of your respective EBS Extended Support period.  If you remain on JDK 6, you will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JDK 6. The certification of Oracle E-Business Suite with JDK 7 for EBS application tier servers on Windows, Linux, and Solaris as well as other platforms such as IBM AIX and HP-UX is planned.  Customers running platforms other than Windows, Linux, and Solaris should refer to their Java vendors's sites for more information about their support policies.   I am new to game development and never implemented a complicated (and realistic) lighting. My game uses a 3d voxel terrain world (like Minecraft). To hold the data I use octrees. My goal is to render a more realistic world scene like in most voxel games. For that I want to use a bezier algorithm to round out the blocky world. Assume that I already have a large generated polygon of my terrain (or some of them). I heard of some techniques like volumetric light, global illumination, ... What approaches of a very realistic lighting are there for my "organic shaped" voxel game?

• In Search of Automatic ORM with REST interface

  I have this wish that so far Google hasn't been able to fulfill. I want to find a package (ideally in PHP, because I know PHP, but I guess that's not a hard requirement) that you point at a database, it builds an ORM based on what it finds there, and exposes a REST interface over the web. Everything I've found in my searches requires a bunch of code--like, it wants you to build the classes for it, but it'll handle the REST request routing. Or it does database and relational stuff just fine, but you have to build your own methods for all the CRUD actions. That's dumb. REST is well defined. If I wanted to re-invent the wheel, I totally could, but I don't want to. Isn't there somebody who's built a one-shot super-simple auto-RESTing web service package?

• Solution with multiple projects and (GitHub) single issue tracker and repository

  I have a Visual Studio solution with multiple projects: Acme.Core Acme.Core.Tests Acme.UI.MvcSite1 Acme.UI.MvcSite2 Acme.UI.WinformsApp1 Acme.UI.WinformsApp2 ... The entire solution is checked-in in a single GitHub (private) repo. Acme.Core contains our business logic and all UI projects are deployables. UI projects have different requirements and features, but some of them are implemented in more than one project. All issues are opened in a single issue tracker and classified using labels ([MvcSite1], [WinformsApp1], etc) but I'm thinking it's starting to get messy. Is it ok to use a single repository and issue tracker to track multiple projects in one solution?

• Podcast: Dell Perot Systems Relies on Oracle In-Memory Database Cache

  Recently we spoke with Bill Binko, Technology Consultant at Dell Perot Systems, about a high volume web-based content delivery system they implemented for a client with Oracle In-Memory Database Cache. Their client needed to respond to ~1 billion hits (web requests) per day, but hadn't been able to support this load. Oracle In-Memory Database Cache allowed for multiple & complicated queries to take place without ever hitting the disk...providing sub-millisecond response time and ability to manage much higher high volumes of data. Old System: Old SQL Server Database, over 300 servers, difficult to maintain. New System: One Oracle Database 11g instance, multiple Oracle RAC nodes, backed up by Oracle Data Guard, and Oracle In-Memory Database Cache to cut query response times by 10x. (I gave it some thoughts and I'll answer my own question; hopefully you have better answers)

• Texturing a mesh generated from voxel data

  I have implemented the Marching Cubes algorithm to display an isosurface based on voxel data. Currently, it is displayed with triplanar texturing. I'm working with unity, so I have a material with the triplanar shader attached. Now, the whole isosurface is rendered using this material. And thats my problem: I want the texture to represent the voxel data. I'm storing a material value for every point in the grid, and based on this value, I want the texture of the isosurface to change. Sadly, I have no clue how to do this. So if the voxel is sand, I want sand to be displayed; if it's stone, then there should be stone. Right now, everything is displayed as sand. Thanks in advance!

• Performing user authentication in a CodeIgniter controller constructor?

  In "The Clean Code Talks -- Unit Testing" (http://youtu.be/wEhu57pih5w), Miško Hevery mentions that "as little work as possible should be done in constructors [to make classes more easily testable]'. It got me thinking about the way I have implemented my user authentication mechanism. Having delved into MVC development through CodeIgniter, I designed my first web application to perform user authentication for protected resources in controllers' constructors in cases where every public function in that controller requires the user to be authenticated. For controllers with public methods having mixed authentication requirements, I would naturally move the authentication from the constructor to each method requiring authentication (though I don't currently have a need for this). I made this choice primarily to keep the controller tight, and to ensure that all resources in the controller are always covered. As for code longevity and maintainability: given the application structure, I can't foresee a situation in which one of the affected controllers would need a public method that didn't require user authentication, but I can see this as a potential drawback in general with this implementation (i.e., requiring future refactoring). Is this a good idea?

• Is PhotoBucket a viable solution to host a website's photo galleries

  I'm currently working with a lot of photographers and will probably be picking up development on a professional photography site soon. With that in mind, and I can't stop thinking about a way I can implement a user-friendly photo gallery hosting solution where the site owner can upload images themselves without any webmaster intervention. Kind of like a CMS for image hosting. The idea is: - The user can log in to PhotoBucket - Upload their gallery - Visit an admin section of the site - Enter the new gallery name to the listing And... Voila, the gallery automagically gets displayed on the website in a clean lightbox-style presentation format (ie, no iframe nonsense). I took a brief look at the API and it looks promising. Is this a viable solution? Bonus points if you have implemented something like this with Photobucket and/or another 3rd-party image hosting site. Note: Purchasing a premium account is expected if necessary. The limitations on free accounts at most image hosting sites are just too restrictive to be useful.

• Object Oriented programming on 8-bit MCU Case Study

  I see that there's a lot of questions related to OO Programming here. I'm actually trying to find a specific resource related to embedded OO approaches for an 8 bit MCU. Several years back (maybe 6) I was looking for material related to Object Oriented programming for resource constrained 8051 microprocessors. I found an article/website with a case history of a design group that used a very small RAM part, and implemented many Object based constructs during their C design and development. I believe it was an 8051. The project was a success, and managed to stay inside the very small ROM/RAM they had available. I'm attempting to find it again, but Google can't locate it. The article was well written, and recommended a "mixed" approach using C methods for inheritance and encapsulation - if I recall correctly. Can anyone help me locate this article?

• Check connection and reconnect wifi

  I'm building a wireless photoframe. The one thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to get my wifi connection back up using a recommended method. Right now I edited /etc/network/interfaces so wlan0 is started at boot: auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp wireless-essid ourssid This method works fine for booting. But I found that if I do not check the connection for a long time (could be a week) it might be down. So I should reconnect. What I do now to verify the connection is working is downloading a file from the server that can't be cached (http://server.ext/ping.php?randomize=123456) If I fail to retrieve the file I assume that the connection is no longer working and I run a shell script like #!/bin/bash ifconfig wlan0 up iwconfig wlan0 essid "ourssid" dhclient wlan0 And the connection comes back. But I can't find anything if this is in any way a good method. Can this be improved upon, or is this already right?
