• How to get strptime to raise ArgumentError with garbage trailing characters

  We have to handle user specified date formats in our application. We decided to go with Date.strptime for parsing and validation, which works great, except for how it just ignores any garbage data entered. • Why does GetClusterShape return null when the cluster specification was retrieved through the GetClu

  Suppose I have a virtual earth shape layer called shapeLayer1 (my creative energy is apparently at an alltime low). When i call the GetClusteredShapes method I get an array of VEClusterSpecification objects that represent each and every one of my currently visible clusters; no problem there. But when I call the GetClusterShape() method it returns null... null! Why on earth would it do that? I used firebug to confirm that the private variable of the VEClusterSpecification that's supposed to hold a reference to the shape is indeed null so it's not the method that's causing the problem. Some have suggested that this is actually documented behavior Returns null if a VEClusterSpecification object was returned from the VEShapeLayer.GetClusteredShapes Method But looking at the current MSDN documentation for the VEShape class it says: Returns if a VEClusterSpecification object was returned from the VEShapeLayer.GetClusteredShapes Method Is this a bug or a feature? Is there any known workarounds or (if it is a bug) some plan on when they are going to fix it?

  Am adding an Entity Data Model to an ASP.NET website. When i Add New Item to the website and select ADO.NET Entity Data Model, am asked for the model name and language. I go a head and select Visual Basic as the language, the model is added and the site can compile with out any issues. however, the model it adds a ModelName.Designer.cs source file, instead of a ModelName.Designer.vb source file. am thinking this is strange as its happening with only one of my website. my other sites have .vb designer source file for their Entity Data Models. The site still compiles with out any errors but am afraid some thing is not right. any one experienced this?, is this normal behavior?

• Popup window keeps opening after I close it and refresh the page?

  I have an aspx.cs page with the following code: hypPopup.Attributes.Add("onclick", "window.open('Popup.aspx', '', 'height=650, width=800, location=no, toolbar=no, status=no, scrollbars=yes, resizable=yes'); return false" ); When I click the hypPopup link, the window pops up which is fine, but if I close it and refresh the page, the popup keeps popping up. I have to leave the page and come back for it to stop popping up on every refresh. Is this behavior by default or is there a fix to it? hypPopup.Attributes.Add is done in the Page_Load

• Submitting a form on 'Enter' with jQuery?

  I have a bog-standard login form - an email text field, a password field and a submit button on an AIR project that's using HTML/jQuery. When I hit Enter on the form, the entire form's contents vanish, but the form isn't submitted. Does anyone know if this is a Webkit issue (Adobe AIR uses Webkit for HTML), or if I've bunged things up? I tried: $('.input').keypress(function(e){ if(e.which == 13){ $('form#login').submit(); } }); But that neither stopped the clearing behavior, or submitted the form. There's no action associated with the form - could that be the issue? Can I put a javascript function in the action?

• Stop VBA Evaluate from calling target function twice

  I am having trouble getting VBA's Evaluate() function to only execute once; it seems to always run twice. For instance, consider the trivial example below. If we run the RunEval() subroutine, it will call the EvalTest() function twice. This can be seen by the two different random numbers that get printed in the immediate window. The behavior would be the same if we were calling another subroutine with Evaluate instead of a function. Can someone explain how I can get Evaluate to execute the target function once instead of twice? Thank you. • Remove first element from $@ in bash

  I'm writing a bash script that needs to loop over the arguments passed into the script. However, the first argument shouldn't be looped over, and instead needs to be checked before the loop. If I didn't have to remove that first element I could just do: for item in "$@" ; do #process item done I could modify the loop to check if it's in its first iteration and change the behavior, but that seems way too hackish. There's got to be a simple way to extract the first argument out and then loop over the rest, but I wasn't able to find it.

  Hi all, I'm new to pgf so i was trying out some examples from the pgfplot manual. One example is especially relevant for my current task but, alas, it would not compile. Package PGF Math Error: Could not parse input 'a' as a floating point number, sorry. The unreadable part was near 'a'.. I have no clue how to correct this behavior. Other plots (smooth, scatter, bar), which contain only numerical data compile fine. Could anybody give me a hint? Cheers K.

  I want to redefine the emacs keyboard shortcut control-i to be "MOVE CURSOR UP" To do this, I added the following line to my .emacs file: (global-set-key (kbd "C-i") 'previous-line) What I then discovered is that the tab key, by default, does whatever is bound to control-i, which is obviously not what I want. So, to restore normal tab behavior, I added this to my .emacs file (global-set-key (kbd "<tab>") 'indent-for-tab-command) This mostly works. BUT, tab no longer works for auto-completing commands in the mini buffer. How can I fix that? Or is there a better way of going about this? Thanks.

  I have a many-to-many relationship defined in my Symfony (using doctrine) project between Orders and Upgrades (an Order can be associated with zero or more Upgrades, and an Upgrade can apply to zero or more Orders). # schema.yml Order: columns: order_id: {...} relations: Upgrades: class: Upgrade local: order_id foreign: upgrade_id refClass: OrderUpgrade Upgrade: columns: upgrade_id: {...} relations: Orders: class: Order local: upgrade_id foreign: order_id refClass: OrderUpgrade OrderUpgrade: columns: order_id: {...} upgrade_id: {...} I want to set up delete cascade behavior so that if I delete an Order or an Upgrade, all of the related OrderUpgrades are deleted. Where do I put onDelete: CASCADE? Usually I would put it at the end of the relations section, but that would seem to imply in this case that deleting Orders would cascade to delete Upgrades. Is Symfony + Doctrine smart enough to know what I'm wanting if I put onDelete: CASCADE in the above relations sections of schema.yml?

• PhoneGap's vibrate() and beep() functions break in iPhone, Android emulators

  I have a PhoneGap app that I'm testing on webOS, Android, and iPhone. I'm using physical devices as well as emulators (the ones that come with their respective SDKs, not the PhoneGap emulator). Part of the code uses the navigator.notification.vibrate() and navigator.notification.beep() functions. All the physical devices I'm using either perform the behavior or ignore it if they're not capable (e.g., the iPod can't vibrate). However, the emulators behave differently. The Android emulator kills the app whenever the beep() function is called. The iPhone emulator causes the app to hang whenever the vibrate() function is called. Is there any way to get the emulators to ignore those function calls when they are unable to execute them? That is, is there a way to get them to degrade gracefully so I can test the app both places without having to modify the code specifically for the emulators?

• Visual Studio 2008 - formatting/control characters/marks

  Hi, I don't know what I did but somehow the IDE has started displaying a green dot whenever I press spacebar and a green arrowhead whenever I press TAB. The source has become littered with these characters all over and I am finding it very difficult to code in the presence of so many formatting marks. I have tried to search a solution on Google but couldn't perhaps enter the right keywords so haven't been able to fix the behavior. Is there any way I can stop VS2008 IDE from littering my source code with these green dots and arrowheads whenever I press spacebar/tab? I would be really thankful for this help.   We're seeing strange behavior when running two versions of a query on SQL Server 2005: version A: SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = 1234 ORDER BY name ASC version B: DECLARE @Id AS INT; SET @Id = 1234; SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = @Id ORDER BY name ASC Both queries return 1000 rows; version A takes on average 15s; version B on average takes 4s. Could anyone help us understand the difference in execution times of these two versions of SQL? If we invoke this query via named parameters using NHibernate, we see the following query via SQL Server profiler: EXEC sp_executesql N'SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = @id ORDER BY name ASC', N'@id INT', @id=1234; ...and this tends to perform as badly as version A.

• UIViewController prevent view from unloading

  When my iPhone app receives a Memory warning the views of UIViewControllers that are not currently visible get unloaded. In one particular controller unloading the view and the outlets is rather fatal. I'm looking for a way to prevent this view from being unloaded. I find this behavior rather stupid - I have a cache mechanism, so when a memory warning comes - I unload myself tons of data and I free enough memory, but I definitely need this view untouched. I see UIViewController has a method 'unloadViewIfReloadable', which gets called when the Memory Warning comes. Does anybody know how to tell Cocoa Touch that my view is not reloadable? Any other suggestions how to prevent my view from being unloaded on Memory Warning? Thanks in advance

  I am part of an organization in which there is contention amongst some very competent folks as to whether or not testing cross-browser behavior for JavaScript applications on virtual machines (for IE6/7/8, FF2/3, Chrome on XP/Vista/7) is reliable. This is using VMWare server on a Linux box host. While the discrepancies seen are few, there are cases in which it has proven difficult to tell if it is a product of virtualization or just different machine configurations. My question to the community is, what is people experience with this? Is there any credence to the claim that VM pose inconsistencies, or are they generally spot-on reliable? Can we trust them?

• In VisualStudio 2008, emacs mode - how can you enable "overwrite"?

  Using VisualStudio 2008, have emacs keyboard mapping scheme enabled. If I select text and try to paste over it, it INSERTS the new text, rather than replacing it. Also, if I select text and hit DELETE it deletes the first character AFTER the selected text (just as if I didn't have any text selected). Does anyone know how to fix this so that I get the standard windows behavior. That is: If I select text and try to paste over it, it replaces the selected text with what I pasted in. If I select text and hit the DELETE key, it actually deletes the text I have selected Thanks! Abby

• Duplex communication using NetTcpBinding - ContractFilter mismatch?

  I'm making slow and steady progress towards having a duplex communication channel open between a client and a server, using NetTcpBinding. (FYI, you can observe my newbie progress here and here!) I'm now at the stage where I have successfully connected to my server, through the server's firewall, and the client can make requests of the server. In the other direction, however, things aren't quite so happy. It works fine when testing on my own machine, but when testing over the internet, when I try to initiate a callback from the server side, I get an error: The message with Action 'http://MyWebService/IWebService/HelloWorld' cannot be processed at the receiver, due to a ContractFilter mismatch at the EndpointDispatcher. This may be because of either a contract mismatch (mismatched Actions between sender and receiver) or a binding/security mismatch between the sender and the receiver. Check that sender and receiver have the same contract and the same binding (including security requirements, e.g. Message, Transport, None). Here are some of the key bits of code. • ASP.NET MVC download image rather than display in browser

  Rather than displaying a PNG in the browser window, I'd like the action result to trigger the file download dialogue box (you know the open, save as, etc). I can get this to work with the code below using an unknown content type, but the user then has to type in .png at the end of the file name.   i wonder why backspace character in common linux terminals does not actually erase the characters, when printed (which normally works when typed).. this works as expected: $ echo -e "abc\b\b\bxyz" xyz (\b evaluates to backspace, can be inserted also as ctrl-v ctrl-h - rendered as ^H (0x08)) but when there are less characters after the backspaces, the strange behavior is revealed: $ echo -e "abc\b\b\bx" xbc is behaves like left arrow keys instead of backspace: $ echo -e "abc\e[D\e[D\e[Dx" xbc erase line back works normally: $ echo -e "abc\e[1Kx" x in fact, when i type ctrl-v <BS> in terminal, ^? (0x7f) is yielded instead of ^H, this is DEL ascii character, but ctrl-v <DEL> produces <ESC>[3~, but it is another story.. so can someone explain why printed backspace character does not erase the characters? (my environment it xterm linux and some other terminal emulators, $TERM == xterm, tried vt100, linux as well)
