• Touch screens for kiosk applications

  I'm developing a kiosk-style touchscreen application in Qt. Currently I'm using an Elo Touch surface acoustic wave touchmonitor which works well except for one thing: drag performance is way too poor to provide a good user experience. As this is the case for the cursor in X as well as in my application, it seems to be either the fault of X (probably not) or the touchmonitor. Since mobile platforms are able to achieve very high performance in this regard, it seems like it should be possible for vastly more powerful desktop systems. Does anybody have experience with getting good drag performance out of desktop touchmonitors? What hardware have you used? Is X to blame?

But basics( one have abstracted from ones experience and interaction with smarter people in this field) one should have including concepts, practical issues, tips/techniques/tricks one should be aware of.For example the lessons or ideas may relate to programming,testing,design,project schedules, that are really useful in daily life of software engineer/developer etc ? This may be a good question because it looks not to specific, however experience of many is better than reading from books.I find discussions much helpful than books.Hope every one will have some lessons/ideas to contribute.please substantiate with atleast one example.

  I am evaluating cloud e-mail solutions based upon: Google Apps for Education Microsoft Live@edu I work for a University and we currently have an institutional portal (based on uPortal). We currently have our local IMAP server and webmail client fully integrated with the portal. We would like to replicate the current portal e-mail experience with the new e-mail services. At present users can see a snapshot of their inbox in the portal and click through into the appropriate place in the webmail client. We expect that we need to solve similar problems when integrating with the cloud based e-mail solutions. We need to solve the single sign-on (SSO) problem. We need to be able to access the inbox messages on the users behalf. (e.g. proxy authentication) Does anybody have an experience or advice on this? Many thanks, Mark

• Recommendations for supporting both Oracle and MSSQL in the same ASP.NET app with NHibernate

  Our client wants to support both SQLServer and Oracle in the next project. Our experience comes from .NET/SQL Server platform. We will hire an Oracle developer, but our concern is with the DataAccess code. Will NHibernate make the DB Engine transparent for us? I don't think so, but i would like to hear from developers who have faced similar situations. I know this question is a little vague, because i don't have Oracle experience, so i don't know what issues we will find.

• Why doesn't Maven's mvn clean ever work the first time?

  Nine times out of ten when I run mvn clean on my projects I experience a build error. I have to execute mvn clean multiple times until the build error goes away. Does anyone else experience this? Is there any way to fix this within Maven? If not, how do you get around it? I wrote a bat file that deletes the target folders and that works well, but it's not practical when you are working on multiple projects. I am using Maven 2.2.1. • Suggestions for designing large-scale Java webapp from the ground up

  Hi all, I'm about to start developing a large-scale system and I'm struggling with which direction to proceed. I've done plenty of Java web apps before and I have plenty of experience with servlet containers and GWT and some experience with Spring. The problem is most of my webapps have been thrown together just to be a proof of concept and what I'm struggling with is what set of frameworks to use. I need to have both a browser based application as well as a web service designed to support access from mobile devices (Android and iPhone for now). Ideally, I'd like to design this system in such a way that I don't end up rewriting all of my servlets for each client (browser and phone) although I don't mind having some small checks in there to properly format the data. In addition, although I'm the only developer now, that won't necessarily be the case down the road and I'd like to design something that scales well both with regards to traffic and number of developers (isn't just a nightmare to maintain). So where I am now is planning on using GWT to design the browser-based interface but I'm struggling with how to reuse that code with to present the interface (most likely xml) for the mobile devices. Using GWT RPC would, I think, make it relatively easy to do all of the AJAX in the browser, but might make generating xml for the mobile phones difficult. In addition, I like the idea of using something like Hibernate for persistence and Spring Security to secure the whole thing. Again, I'm not sure how well those will cooperate with GWT (I think Hibernate should be fine...) There's obviously a lot more to this than I've presented here, but I've tried to give you the 5-minute overview. I'm a bit stumped and was wondering if anybody in the community had any experience starting from this place. Does what I'm trying to do make sense? Is it realistic? I have no doubt I can make all of these frameworks speak the same language, I'm just wondering if it's worth my time to fight with them. This works perfect. Now for users who do not have Java experience I want to package somehow my application together with the application server and distribute it as a stand-alone version. Question 1: Is this possible? Question 2: Which application server would be best for this? Question 3: Where should I start to learn how to do this? Do you have any experience you can share with me. I have read a lot that springMVC framework is a good choice (never used though) My earlier experience with java is not much. only some small app development using Netbeans. so I have some experience using Netbeans. but I see that I can start a JEE project in Netbeans. so what kind of framework netbeans is using underneath. PS: My understanding of framework (e.g. SpringMVC) is that you follow rule of framework to configure your app. and then framework take care or linking your View, controller and model. so if i am using netbeans, do i need to take care of linking of my MVC by myself?

• serving js libraries: better performance from google code or using asset packager?

  I am working on a rails application that uses big javascript libraries (e.g. jquery UI), and I also have a handful of my own javascript files. I'm using asset packager to package up my own javascript. I'm considering two ways of serving these files: Link to the jQuery libraries from Google Code as described at http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxlibs/documentation/#jquery , and separately package up and serve my javascript files using asset packager. Host the jquery libraries myself, and package them together with my own javascript as one big merged javascript file. My hosting solution is of course not going to beat out Google's content delivery network, so at first I assumed that end users would experience faster page loads via option #1. However, it also occured to me that if I serve them myself, users would only need to issue one request to get the merged javascript (as opposed to one for my merged javascript and another for the libraries served by google). Which approach will provide the best end-user experience (presumably in the form of faster load times?)

• Executing a DTS package from Sql Server 2005

  I am trying to run several DTS packages from a sql 2000 box. The DTS calls will originate from .net 2.0 - 3.5 code. I have been unable to find a good way to programmatically accomplish this. What I have read is running a sql job from a stored procedure that calls the DTS package. Does anyone has any experience with this or know of a good way to call the DTS? Note: For the forseeable future these packages will remain DTS. Eventually we will convert them to SSIS. Any insight or experience would be very helpful.

  going through both the django book and tutorial, am a bit confused to the differences in approach (aren't they both written by the same people?) can anyone who has experience in both give a short review on them? i have decent python skills (largely untested though), but no experience at all in web apps and am trying to decide which one to stick to. i briefly looked in to practical django projects but that was a bit too complicated for me, my background is primarily bash scripting, the python i know i learned from an instant hacking tutorial and diving into python.

• Modbus driver: C vs Java

  Hi stackoverflow, I am soon going to start a project where I'm required to program a Modbus driver. My initial approach was to want to do it in Java, however my boss has had contact with a company that has experience in Modbus, and they said C is the better language to approach Modbus. So my boss pretty much demanded it to be in C. My C knowledge is not really big, so it would require me to learn enough to get the Modbus driver working in proper and stable order. So, my question to you stackoverflow people with some experience in Modbus: how important could the choice of C vs Java be? The modbus site seems to have Java libraries, if C was so superior to Java in every way, why would they have those libraries? Would it be useful to learn C properly for the advantages that might give?

• Minimum Hardware requirements for Android development

  I need information about minimum hardware requirement I need to have better experience in developing Android application. My current configuration is as follows. P4 3.0 GHz, 512 MB of ram. Started with Hello Android development on my machine and experience was sluggish, was using Eclipse Helios for development. Emulator used to take lot of time to start. And running program too. Do I need to upgrade my machine for the development purpose or is there anything else I am missing on my machine(like heavy processing by some other application I might have installed). And If I do need to upgrade, do I need to upgrade my processor too(that counts to new machine actually, which I am not in favor of), or only upgrading RAM will suffice.

• Which Workflow Engine do you recommend?

  I am kicking around the idea of using a workflow engine on this upcoming project. We know that there is a lot of caveats with using a workflow engine and we have a lot of development experience in many platforms so we would be willing to let the choice of workflow engine take precedence over our favorite toolset or developer IDE. We are more interested in internal workflow (i.e. petri net for easily changeable ERP purposes without involving additional coder time) than external workflow (i.e. aggregating SOAP calls into a transaction aware, higher level SOA). Which workflow engine would you recommend? We have superficially looked at offerings by Oracle, Microsoft, and some open source stuff too. It's all very overwhelming so please respond only if you have real life experience with implementing internal workflow.

• Which C# 4.0 Book would you purchase, and why?

  I'm currently looking at purchasing a few C# 4.0 books, namely: Essential C# 4.0 by Mark Michaelis or C# 4.0 Unleashed by Bart De Smet. I am aware that both books are yet to be released, but would you consider purchasing either of these books, or would you recommend another? Thanks for your time. Clarification: I'm not a .net Ninja, but I do have 8+ years experience with the framework & related languages. So I'm generally looking for in-depth books. I also train/instruct the rest of my organisation generally 6 - 12 months after each .net release. Each of the developers I train has the same or more .net experience then myself. • Another answer to the CAPTCHA problem?

  Most sites at least employ server access log checking and banning along with some kind of bot prevention measure like a CAPTCHA (those messed-up text images). The problem with CAPTCHAs is that they poss a threat to the user experience. Luckily they now come with user friendly features like refresh and audio versions. Anyway, like linux vs windows, it isn't worth the time of a spammer to customize and/or build a script to handle a custom CAPTCHA example that only pertains to one site. Therefore, I was wondering if there might be better ways to handle the whole CAPTCHA thing. In A Better CAPTCHA Peter Bromberg mentions that one way would be to convert the image to HTML and display it embedded in the page. On http://shiflett.org/ Chris simply asks users to type his name into an input. Examples like this are ways to simplifying the CAPTCHA experience while decreasing the value for spammers. Does anyone know of more good examples I could use or see any problem with the embedded image idea?

• Will being self-taught limit me?

  I'm 21 and am pretty efficient in html/css, python, and javascript. I also know my way around lisp languages and enjoy programing in them. My problem is that I'm extremely self-taught and not quite confident that I could land a job programing, but I really need a job soon as I've just become a father. I haven't even created a resume yet because I'm not really sure what to put on it except my lone experience. So I wanted to ask, will being primarily self-taught with some experience on small projects I've done for a few clients limit me too much? I mean I know I need some kind of education so I've enrolled part time in a community college to work on a degree in computer science, but it's years till then. And if it will limit me a lot, what kind of skills would be good to work on to make my chances any better? Thank You

• Hex Decompilers for PIC

  I've faced to a problem with a PIC Micro controller. I have a micro-controller programmed by me long time ago and I lost the relevant source code and the schematic diagrams. Now I need to invert the value of a port. I can do this using some NOT gates but it is a big hassle to do so. or alternatively I will need to write the whole program back. I don't expect to see the code back in PIC C or MikroC. Having an understandable assembly code would be sufficient. So do anyone has any experience on a good HEX decompiler that I can use for this purpose? Any comments based on your experience? :)

• Using Vim on the ipad... Any tips?

  I'm itching to program on my ipad. With the iSSH app I was able to log on to my university's server and even open an X server window. Unfortunately, the experience within iSSH is still rather clumsy. When using vim, the bottom line is hidden by the keyboard. Does anyone have any experience with SSH connections and the ipad or iphone? Are there better applications to use? I would prefer not to jailbreak my ipad.

• What would you recommend for a large-scale Java data grid technology: Terracotta, GigaSpaces, Cohere

  I've been reading up on so-called "data grid" solutions for the Java platform including Terracotta, GigaSpaces and Coherence. I was wondering if anyone has real-world experience working any of these tools and could share their experience. I'm also really curious to know what scale of deployment people have worked with: are we talking 2-4 node clusters or have you worked with anything significantly larger than that? I'm attracted to Terracotta because of its "drop in" support for Hibernate and Spring, both of which we use heavily. I also like the idea of how it decorates bytecode based on configuration and doesn't require you to program against a "grid API." I'm not aware of any advantages to tools which use the approach of an explicit API but would love to hear about them if they do in fact exist. :) I've also spent time reading about memcached but am more interested in hearing feedback on these three specific solutions. I would be curious to hear how they measure up against memcached in the event someone has used both.

• From .NET to Delphi, an ERP on Delphi

  I have learned programming on .NET. It's been 4 years since I have started (serious) programming, I gained experience in VBA, JavaScript but mainly C#. I have spent a lot of time trying to grasp the good coding practices, object orientation etc. Now finally I have a job. The job is fixing/upgrading an ERP on a daily basis. Creating reports and maybe sometimes new stuff. I have absolutely no experience in Delphi, and no motivation to learn it especially when people are moving to .NEt from Delphi not in the reverse direction sa my manager expects :) The question is that are there any tools that I write C# code and compile into this object pascal or whatever it is.
