• How to handle class dependency with interfaces and implementatons

  I'm using ObjectAid with Eclipse to generate UML class diagrams for my latest Java project, and I currently have a handful of situations like this, where I have a dependency between two interfaces, as well as one of the implementations of one of the interfaces. Here, foo is the graphics library I'm using. In the previous example, FooCanvas draws ITexture objects to the screen, and both FooCanvas and its interface, ICanvas, take ITexture objects as arguments to their methods. The method in the canvas classes which cause this dependency is the following: void drawTexture(ITexture texture, float x, float y); Additionally, I tried a variation on the method signature using Java's generics: <T extends ITexture> void drawTexture(T texture, float x, float y); The result of this was a class diagram where the only dependencies where between the interfaces and the implementing classes, and no dependency by a canvas object on a texture. I'm not sure if this is more ideal or not. Is the dependency of both the interface and implementation on another interface an expected pattern, or is it typical and/or possible to keep the implementation 'isolated' from its interfaces dependencies? Or is the generic method the ideal solution?

• When and how does one become a good programmer these days? [closed]

  I mean, good enough to make software people want and get paid for it. Maybe even good enough to launch a company or something. I'm also concerned that I'm not applying the finer points of my algorithms/data structures/software design knowledge. Background: I'm 20 and have been struggling with programming for about two years now, trying to become a software engineer. I started with a few university courses that I did quite poorly in. I learned how to make websites with HTML/JavaScript and PHP/MySQL, but feel like I know very relevant theory for making good databases - how does something like Facebook serve hundreds of millions of people? What would be smart ways to store data? I don't know. Now I'm doing some android application development, but again I have no idea about good Java design theory (I use static variables like they're going out of fashion) and feel more like I'm gluing stuff together and letting Eclipse slowly autocomplete my project. In short, I'm not sure if I'm becoming a legitimate software developer or just "doing what's cool". At least I've taken some data structures and Algorithms courses and plan to take more in the next years. But I'm having a really tough time applying this stuff to my fun little apps that I'm building. Every language higher level than C++ seems to have its own quicksort function already built-in, for example. Similarly, I can't remember ever needing to implement a linked-list, heap, binary tree, or or worry about pointers and memory management. But maybe this is a good thing so that I focus on other things? I'm not too sure what those other things are though. Hopefully something more than building another photo sharing app. Anyways that's it for me, I look forward to your responses!

• Using Oracle Proxy Authentication with JPA (eclipselink-Style)

  Security is a very intriguing topic. You will find it everywhere and you need to implement it everywhere. Yes, you need. Unfortunately, one can easily forget it while implementing the last mile. The Last Mile In a multi-tier application it is a common practice to use connection pools between the business layer and the database layer. Connection pools are quite useful to speed database connection creation and to split the load. Another very common practice is to use a specific, often called technical, user to connect to the database. This user has authentication and authorization rules that apply to all application users. Imagine you've put every effort to define roles for different types of users that use your application. These roles are necessary to differentiate between normal users, premium users, and administrators (I bet you will find or already have more roles in your application). While these user roles are pretty well used within your application, once the flow of execution enters the database everything is gone. Each and every user just has one role and is the same database user. Issues? What Issues? As long as things go well, this is not a real issue. However, things do not go well all the time. Once your application becomes famous performance decreases in certain situations or, more importantly, current and upcoming regulations and laws require that your application must be able to apply different security measures on a per user role basis at every stage of your application. If you only have a bunch of users with the same name and role you are not able to find the application usage profile that causes the performance issue, or which user has accessed data that he/she is not allowed to. Another thread to your role concept is that databases tend to be used by different applications and tools. These tools can be developer tools like SQL*Plus, SQL Developer, etc. or end user applications like BI Publisher, Oracle Forms and so on. These tools have no idea of your applications role concept and access the database the way they think is appropriate. A big oversight for your perfect role model and a big nightmare for your Chief Security Officer. Speaking of the CSO, brings up another issue: Password management. Once your technical user account is compromised, every user is able to do things that he/she is not expected to do from the design of your application. Counter Measures In the Oracle world a common counter measure is to use Virtual Private Database (VPD). This restricts the values a database user can see to the allowed minimum. However, it doesn't help in regard of a connection pool user, because this one is still not the real user. Oracle Proxy Authentication Another feature of the Oracle database is Proxy Authentication. First introduced with version 9i it is a quite useful feature for nearly every situation. The main idea behind Proxy Authentication is, to create a crippled database user who has only connect rights. Even if this user is compromised the risks are well understood and fairly limited. This user can be used in every situation in which you need to connect to the database, no matter which tool or application (see above) you use.The proxy user is perfect for multi-tier connection pools. CREATE USER app_user IDENTIFIED BY abcd1234; GRANT CREATE SESSION TO app_user; But what if you need to access real data? Well, this is the primary use case, isn't it? Now is the time to bring the application's role concept into play. You define database roles that define the grants for your identified user groups. Once you have these groups you grant access through the proxy user with the application role to the specific user. CREATE ROLE app_role_a; GRANT app_role_a TO scott; ALTER USER scott GRANT CONNECT THROUGH app_user WITH ROLE app_role_a; Now, hr has permission to connect to the database through the proxy user. Through the role you can restrict the hr's rights the are needed for the application only. If hr connects to the database directly all assigned role and permissions apply. Testing the Setup To test the setup you can use SQL*Plus and connect to your database: $ sqlplus app_user[hr]/abcd1234 Java Persistence API The Java Persistence API (JPA) is a fairly easy means to build applications that retrieve data from the database and put it into Java objects. You use plain old Java objects (POJOs) and mixin some Java annotations that define how the attributes of the object are used for storing data from the database into the Java object. Here is a sample for objects from the HR sample schema EMPLOYEES table. When using Java annotations you only specify what can not be deduced from the code. In both worlds you normally create a Facade to retrieve or store the values of the Entities to or from the database. The Facade does this via an EntityManager which will be injected by the Java EE container. Installing the Oracle Database Instance Client software works perfectly. Provide the user name that connects through the proxy user This part needs some modification of your application software and session facade. Session Facade Changes In the Session Facade we must ensure that every call that goes through the EntityManager must be prepared correctly and uniquely assigned to this session. The second is really important, as the EntityManager works with a connection pool and can not guarantee that we set the proxy user on the connection that will be used for the database activities. To avoid changing every method call of the Session Facade we provide a method to set the username of the user that connects through the proxy user. This method needs to be called by the Facade client bfore doing anything else. public void setUsername(String name) { username = name; } Next we provide a means to instruct the TopLink EntityManager Delegate to use Oracle Proxy Authentication.   Hi everybody, I know that there have quite a lot of answers to similar questions but I couldn't find any solution to my question, so new topic : I'm creating a listview, with one basic view per row, my try is to change the background color of the view by .setbackgroundcolor, but nothing's doing the trick... I define an array of color at the beginning of my resources and i'm trying to display it, I also tried to put the array in the class, write the color like #00FF00, int, and I wanted to try 0x...... but as my colors are in an array, I can't do 0x+myColorsArray[i] because Eclipse tells me that it's not a proper hex color... I'm getting a bit desperate... thanks for any help

• Tess4J working as standalone in 64 bit windows, But fails in Tomcat 7

  Trying OCR with Tess4J and able to make it work as a standalone application on 64 bit windows. I am using eclipse for the same. Now I am trying to create a war of the same code and deploy it in Tomcat7 and call the api using a servlet.   Hello, I am new to Android. Follow the HelloAndroid Tutorials by use Eclipse. After run HelloAndroid, the AVD 'xian_avd2' lunched, but stop there, no " Hello, Android" displayed on AVD. • android memory management outside heap

  Hi I am working on an application for android and we since we have lots of graphics, we use a lot of memory. I monitor the memory heap size and its about 3-4 Mb , and peeks of 5Mb when I do something that requires more memory (and then goes back to 3). This is not a big deal, but some other stuff is handled outside the heap memory, like loading of drawables. For example if I run the ddms tool outside eclipse, and go to sysinfo, I see that my app is taking 20Mb on the Droid and 12 on the G1, but heap size are the same in both, because data is the same but images are different. So the questions are: How do I know what is taking the memory outside the heap memory? What other stuff takes memory outside the heap memory? Complex layouts (big tree) ? Animations? Thanks Daniel

• How To debug Android app on Emulator using NetBeans IDE

  I recently downloaded the latest NetBeans IDE (for MACOSX) and imported/migrated a project over from the ECLIPSE environment. Everything looks, and works well... except that EMULATOR gets stuck "waiting for the debugger to attach." I tried "Attaching Debugger..." and set the PORT value to every case I've ever read about (8200, 8700, 5555, etc.) but the connection is refused. I am of the opinion that this is not the preferred way to start a debugging session in NetBeans for Android. What am I missing?

  Hi friends, I am trying to write a small application using bouncycastle algorithm, from the http://tinyurl.com/ylclavn (BouncyCastleProvider.java) it says we have to import and add the provider during runtime by the following code import org.bouncycastle.jce.provider.BouncyCastleProvider; Security.addProvider(new BouncyCastleProvider()); error - The import org.bouncycastle cannot be resolved; during import error - BouncyCastleProvider cannot be resolved to a type; when calling addProvider I though bouncycastle is not provided with the Android 1.6 SDK, so thought of installing separately. how should i do this? If Bouncycastle is shipped along with SDK, what should i do to avoid these errors? I am using Android 1.6, eclipse-V3.4.0 on winXP . Thanks in advance

• Having the output of a Console App in Visual Studio instead of the Console

  When doing "Console" apps in Java with Eclipse, I see the output being put in a text box on the IDE itself, instead of having a Console popping up like in Visual Studio. This comes in handy, as even after the program has exited, I can still make good use of the text that was written in it, as it doesn't get erased until I run it again. Is it possible to achieve anything like that with Visual Studio? I know that instead of doing System.Console.WriteLine(str); I can do System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine(str); but it is not quite the same thing, as you get a lot of "junk" in the Output window, as all the loaded symbols and such. Even better, is it possible to have everything done in the IDE itself, when you run your app, instead of having the Console running? Thanks

• How to avoid "Page Expired" messages on logout with Wicket after redirect

  Hi there. I'm taking my first steps in to the world of Wicket. I've set up a login form and a logout page. The logout page looks like this: public class LogoutPage extends WebPage { public LogoutPage(final PageParameters pageParams) { getSession().invalidate(); setResponsePage(getApplication().getHomePage()); } } When a user clicks the Logout link they're redirected to the homepage, so far so good. The problem is that when a user tries to click on any of the navigatable Link's they get a "Page Expired" message. I'd like to log the user out gracefully and allow the user to continue to browse the website without receiving the "Page Expired" message. Any help is greatly appreciated. By the way, I've tried to follow the Wicket examples but they seem to be using org.apache.wicket.authentication and I haven't figured out how to make this available to my project (I'm using eclipse and maven2).

• Running JUnit test classes from another JUnit test class

  I have two classes that I am testing (let's call them ClassA and ClassB). Each has its own JUnit test class (testClassA and testClassB respectively). ClassA relies on ClassB for its normal functioning, so I want to make sure ClassB passes its tests before running testClassA (otherwise the results from testClassA would be meaningless). What is the best way to do this? In this case it is for an assignment so I need to keep it to the two specified test classes if possible. Can/should I throw an exception from testClassA if testClassB's tests aren't all passed? This would require testClassB to run invisibly and just report its success/failure to testClassA, rather than to the GUI (via JUnit). I am using Eclipse and JUnit 4.8.1

  Hi, I've been doing just simple archetype projects until now, and always after dependencies definition and saving pom.xml, immediately after that the Maven Dependencies library was full of libraries. But now I declared: parent(pom packaging, scm, repository management) parent(pom packaging, shared dependencies) actual project (jar packaging, few more dependencies) actual project (jar packaging, few more dependencies) I created them from the upper one by "Create module" ... Problem is, that I can't make it automatically fill the Maven Dependencies library In .classpath file there is this line <classpathentry kind="con" path="org.maven.ide.eclipse.MAVEN2_CLASSPATH_CONTAINER"/> as in other "working" projects, but there is nothing on the classpath. Any suggestions please ?

  Hi, I'm looking for the JDK source code for Java 1.5 update 18 (on win XP). I don't want to install a JDK, I don't want the source code for the entire VM, just the source for the JDK libs, so that when I navigate to a Java class in Eclipse, it opens up the source code. Is it possible to download just src.zip (or a zip that contains src.zip)? I don't want to install a new JDK/JRE just to get access to src.zip as I'm concerned that this will have undesirable side-effects such as modifying JAVA_HOME. Thanks, Don

  I am getting this error when I include an opensource library that I had to compile from source. Now, all the suggestions on the web indicate that the code was compiled in one version and executed in another version (new on old). However, I only have one version of JRE on my system. If I run the commands: $ javac -version javac 1.5.0_18 $ java -version java version "1.5.0_18" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_18-b02) Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.5.0_18-b02, mixed mode) and check in Eclipse for the properties of the java library, I get 1.5.0_18 Therefore, I have to conclude something else, internal to a class itself, is throwing the exception?? Is that even possible?

• Error when starting a tab activity in Android?

  I followed the directions verbatim in this Android tutorial, copying/pasting the code from the site to my app. http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-tabwidget.html However, when I try to run in the Android emulator, I get the error: "The application Hello Tab Widget has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." I tried debugging by introducing a breakpoint in the first line of the onCreate method, but the error occurs before the breakpoint is even hit. Any idea of what is going wrong, or any other way I can debug this issue? I am using Eclipse.

• From actionscript to google's datastore through java.

  I'm working on a flash game written in pure actionscript 3.0 in Flex. I've just finished implementing replays for the game, but want to store the top 10 hiscores' replay data on my google-app-engine'd website. I'm using Java for the app-engine stuff in Eclipse in java but I have no idea how to deal with communicating to my java code from my actionscript code. I'll need to both read and write from actionscript - java - datastore. Does anyone have any experience with this? For note, I'm horribly noob with anything to do with web development. I hear you can pass arguments to a URL when calling it, comparable to command-line arguments on a desktop executable and if so then sending all the data as a large string would be doable... The question then would be how to call a url from AS3 code with additional data and then how to catch that on the java side. Thanks to anyone who can help. Jono

  Hey, I've downloaded the android source code for CallLog, Contacts, Dialing in this link http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/packages/apps/Contacts.git;a=tree But now, when I try to import this package on Eclipse, imports like: com.google, com.android.internal.Telephony, com.android.internal.R, com.google.android.collect, android.provider.ContactsContract.Intents.UI, android.provider.ContactsContract.SearchSnippetColumns, android.provider.ContactsContract.ProviderStatus, android.provider.ContactsContract.ContactCounts, android.content.IContentService, android.provider.ContactsContract.Intents.UI And many other imports, show errors saying it cannot be resolved. So my question is, why it shows this errors? Why I cant implement it without this errors? I use the Google APIs, I've created the project from an existing source code, but I dont know why this happens. Thanks.

• AJAX get data from large HTML page as the large HTML page loads

  Not entirely sure whether this has a name but basically I have a large HTML page that is generated from results in a db. So viewing the HTML page (which is a report) in a browser directly does not display all contents immediately but displays what it has and additional HTML is added as the results from the DB are retrieved... Is there a way I can make an AJAX request to this HTML page and as opposed to waiting until the whole page (report) is ready, I can start processing the response as the HTML report is loaded? Or is there another way of doing it? Atm I make my AJAX response it just sits there for a minute or two until the HTML page is complete... If context is of any use: The HTML report is generated by a Java servlet and the page making the AJAX call is a JSP page. Unfortunately I can't very easily break the report up because it is generated by BIRT (Eclipse reporting extension). Thanks in advance.

• How can I implement an abstract singleton class in Java?

  Here is my sample abstract singleton class: public abstract class A { protected static A instance; public static A getInstance() { return instance; } //...rest of my abstract methods... } And here is the concrete implementation: public class B extends A { private B() { } static { instance = new B(); } //...implementations of my abstract methods... } Unfortunately I can't get the static code in class B to execute, so the instance variable never gets set. I have tried this: Class c = B.class; A.getInstance() - returns null; and this ClassLoader.getSystemClassLoader().loadClass("B"); A.getInstance() - return null; Running both these in the eclipse debugger the static code never gets executed. The only way I could find to get the static code executed is to change the accessibility on B's constructor to public, and to call it. I'm using sun-java6-jre on Ubuntu 32bit to run these tests.

Looking at the spec it doesn't seem to look like CASE is valid in COUNT Is there any other way?
