• For Australian audiences, would an uncached .com.au domain resolve faster than an uncached .com?

  Is there any speed benefit to using a .com.au domain rather than a .com if your customers, hosting and DNS services are in Australia, specifically in the worst typical case (domain is not cached in any local DNS relay for customer)? Assuming that both domains pointed to the same nameservers in the end. I know this is mostly academic because we are talking about a DNS lookup that would take at most a few hundred milliseconds and would only be relevant once at the beginning of a session. I just was curious. I know that an uncached .com lookup will involve consulting at least one ?.gtld-servers.net. server and an uncached .com.au will involve consulting at least one ?.au. server. Now, what I guess I'd need to know is Are the various ?.gtld-servers.net. servers using anycast technology that would have local fully authoritative nodes in Australia, making them just as fast to Australians as ?.au. and avoiding a 200ms+ overseas latency, or are some or all of them hosted only in the US or in the northern hemisphere?

• Setting up Mako with Cherrypy on nginx through FastCGI

  I'm trying to use TemplateLookup from Mako, but can't seem to get it to work.   Found the following here. The questions is: where can I find more details on how exactly implement this on Windows? Any guide or how-to anybody? Or maybe you can provide your invaluable suggestions? Specifically, how do I make so that "all QA servers would first resolve entries in qa.example.com first and then if that lookup failed they would try example.com" (I'm a dev, not a DNS specialist, but our IT Support has refused to help on this:() Use DNS Based Environment Determination for your servers. Do this by initially splitting your top level domain into a number of sub domains depending on their function, and then creating DNS Service Names in each of the sub domains pointing to the relevant server for that service. Based on the list above we would then have: * clientdb.prod.example.com for Production * clientdb.perf.example.com for Performance Testing * clientdb.qa.example.com for QA * clientdb.dev.example.com for Development Servers then resolve entries in their relevant sub domain by function. That is, all QA servers would first resolve entries in qa.example.com first and then if that lookup failed they would try example.com. This allows you to have a single configuration entry for your client database hostname (clientdb) that would resolve correctly in all environments. This technique has the added advantage of still having global services defined in a common top level domain. This seems to be related to Providing "split horizon" DNS service. Reading that, I see that I will probably need separate DNS Server for each environment. Is this true or does Windows support some form of "tagging" the records to be visible depending on the requestor's IP?

• Cannot resolve Hostname to IP, but IP to hostname works

  I have deployed a bunch of windows server VMs on a cloud hosting service. These machines are all joined to a domain controller on the same service, which also hosts DNS. All of the domain-joined machines have dynamic IP (along with the DC). If I try to resolve any of the hostnames remotely, it fails. For example, I am in SQL Server Reporting Services and I need to connect to a remote server. I provide the hostname of the desired target server and this fails, but then if I provide the IP, this works. How can I pass the hostname and have this resolve to IP? Is there anything I need to look for in the DNS server? It has records of the hostnames (in forward lookup I think), but reverse is empty. Isn't it the case that forward lookup resolves ip to hostname and reverse resolves hostname to ip? Also, I don't know what he subnet mask because this is not in my control, so the machines may not be in the same subnet - can this be a cause of the problem? Where is the problem? Thanks

• Hotmail marking messages as junk

  I was having problems with emails sent from my server being blocked completely by Hotmail, but I found out Hotmail had blocked my IP and by contacting Hotmail I had the block removed. See this question for more info: Email sent from server with rDNS & SPF being blocked by Hotmail But now all emails from my server are going directly to recipients "Junk" folder on hotmail and I can't figure out why. Hotmail says "Microsoft SmartScreen marked this message as junk and we'll delete it after ten days." I tried contacting the same people at Hotmail who had my IP block removed, but I haven't received any reply and its been almost a week. Here are some details: I have a valid SPF record for my domain "v=spf1 a include:_spf.google.com ~all" I have reverse DNS setup I have a Sender Score of 100 https://www.senderscore.org/lookup.php?lookup=66.199.162.177&ipLookup.x=55&ipLookup.y=14 I have signed up for Microsoft's SNDS and was approved. • Exim: send every emails with a predefined sender

  We use Exim on our servers to send emails only from local automated users, as root, cron, etc. We have to specify every possible users into /etc/email-addresses. For example: root: [email protected] cron: [email protected] backup: [email protected] This allow us te receive every email generated. The problem is when we add a user for whatever reason (for example when we add a package, some add a user), we can forget to add this user to /etc/email-addresses. Most of the time it's not a problem, but this is not clean. And the overall method is not clean. We'd like to configure Exim to send every emails with the same source address. i.e. every sent email comes from [email protected] One way could be to use a wildcard or a regular expression into /etc/email-addresses but this is not supported. I don't currently understand Exim enought to figure out how to modify this in a way or another. Ideally, Exim should look into /etc/email-addresses first, and if no match it use the predefined address. But this is very secondary. • Varnish does not start properly (crashes after startup) with no error messages

  I am running Varnish (2.0.4 from the Ubuntu unstable apt repository, though I have also used the standard repository) in a test environment (Virtual Machines) on Ubuntu 9.10, soon to be 10.04. When I have a working configuration and the server starts successfully it seems like everything is fine, however if, for whatever reason, I stop and then restart the varnish daemon it doesn't always startup properly, and there are no errors going into syslog or messages to indicate what might be wrong. If I run varnish in debug mode (-d) and issue start when prompted then 7 times out of time it will run, but occasionally it will just shut down 'silently'. • Things to check for an internet-facing email server.

  I'm faced with the task of setting up a public-internet-facing email server, that will be relaying mail for all of our other servers in the network. While the software in itself is set up in few keystrokes, what little experience I have with managing an email server has thought me that there are tons of awkward filtering techniques employed by other email systems. Systems that my own server will inevitably interact with a some point. Hence, my questions: What things should be kept in mind and double checked when setting up an email server? What resources are available for checking if my email server is set-up correctly? I'm specifically NOT looking for instructions for any given mail server, such as Exchange or Postfix. But it's okay to say: “you should have X and Y in your set-up, because when talking to server software Z, it typically tries to weed out open relays by checking for these.” Some things I've discovered myself: Make sure forward and reverse DNS are set up. Mail servers tend to do a reverse lookup for the peer IP-address when receiving. Matching a reverse look up with a follow-up forward lookup is probably employed to weed out open relays run through malware on home networks. Make sure the user in the From-address exists. The From-address is easily spoofed. A receiving mail server may try to contact the mail server in the From-domain, and see if the From-user actually exists.

• F5 BIG_IP persistence iRules applied but not affecting selected member

  I have a virtual server. I have 2 iRules (see below) assigned to it as resources. From the server log it looks like that the rules are running and they select the correct member from the pool after persisting the session (as far as I can tell based on my log messages), but the requests are ultimately directed to somewhere else. Here's how both rules look like: when HTTP_RESPONSE { set sessionId [HTTP::header X-SessionId] if {$sessionId ne ""} { persist add uie $sessionId 3600 log local0.debug "Session persisted: <$sessionId> to <[persist lookup uie $sessionId]>" } } when HTTP_REQUEST { set sessionId [findstr [HTTP::path] "/session/" 9 /] if {$sessionId ne ""} { persist uie $sessionId set persistValue [persist lookup uie $sessionId] log local0.debug "Found persistence key <$sessionId> : <$persistValue>" } } According to the log messages from the rules, the proper balancer members are selected. Note: the two rules can not conflict, they are looking for different things in the path. Those two things never appear in the same path. Notes about the server: * The default load balancing method is RR. * There is no persistence profile assigned to the virtual server. I'm wondering if this should be adequate to enable the persistence, or alternatively, do I have to combine the 2 rules and create a persistence profile with them for the virtual server? Or is there something else that I have missed?

• Unusual HEAD requests to nonsense URLs from Chrome

  I have noticed unusual traffic coming from my workstation the last couple of days. I am seeing HEAD requests sent to random character URLs, usually three or four within a second, and they appear to be coming from my Chrome browser. The requests repeat only three or four times a day, but I have not identified a particular pattern. The URL characters are different for each request. Here is an example of the request as recorded by Fiddler 2: HEAD http://xqwvykjfei/ HTTP/1.1 Host: xqwvykjfei Proxy-Connection: keep-alive Content-Length: 0 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/9.0.597.98 Safari/534.13 Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate,sdch Accept-Language: en-US,en;q=0.8 Accept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.3 The response to this request is as follows: HTTP/1.1 502 Fiddler - DNS Lookup Failed Content-Type: text/html Connection: close Timestamp: 08:15:45.283 Fiddler: DNS Lookup for xqwvykjfei failed. No such host is known I have been unable to find any information through Google searches related to this issue. I do not remember seeing this kind of traffic before late last week, but it may be that I just missed it before. The one modification I made to my system last week that was unusual was adding the Delicious add-in/extension to both IE and Chrome. I have since removed both of these, but am still seeing the traffic. I have run virus scan (Trend Micro) and HiJackThis looking for malicious code, but I have not found any. I would appreciate any help tracking down the source of the requests, so I can determine if they are benign, or indicative of a bigger problem. Thanks.

  So I started reading this book: http://www.amazon.com/Cocoa-Design-Patterns-Erik-Buck/dp/0321535022 On chapter 2 it explains about the MVC design pattern and gives and example which I need some clarification to. The simple example shows a view with the following fields: hourlyRate, WorkHours, Standarthours , salary. The example is devided into 3 parts : View - contains some text fiels and a table (the table contains a list of employees' data). Controller - comprised of NSArrayController class (contains an array of MyEmployee) Model - MyEmployee class which describes an employee. MyEmployee class has one method which return the salary according to the calculation logic, and attributes in accordance with the view UI controls. MyEmployee inherits from NSManagedObject. Few things i'm not sure of : 1. Inside the MyEmplpyee class implemenation file, the calculation method gets the class attributes using sentence like " [[self valueForKey:@"hourlyRate"] floatValue];" Howevern, inside the header there is no data member named hourlyRate or any of the view fields. I'm not quite sure how does it work, and how it gets the value from the right view field. (does it have to be the same name as the field name in the view). maybe the conncetion is made somehow using the Interface builder and was not shown in the book ? and more important: 2. how does it seperate the view from the model ? let's say ,as the book implies might happen, I decide one day to remove one of the fields in the view. as far as I understand, that means changing the way the salary method works in MyEmplpyee (cause we have one field less) , and removing one attribute from the same calss. So how is that separate the View from the Model if changing one reflect on the other ? I guess I get something wrong... Any comments ? Thanks

• SSRS 2005 - Cascading parameters and default value update problem

  I have a report with cascading parameters. The first parameter is Finanical Period Type, being either Month or Week. The second parameter is a list of either financial months or weeks depending on what was selected for the first parameter. This all works well and selecting a series of different Financial Period Types in sequence correctly updates the second parameter's values. However I now wish to add a default value for the second parameter, which is once again dependent on the first parameter. So I've added an additional field to the dataset populating the second parameter called DefaultPeriod and set the second parameter's default value to be retrieved from the above field. The first time I select the Financial Period Type, the default is correctly set. However changing the Financial Period Type results in an updated list for the second parameter, but the default is incorrect. It remains set to the original default value, even thought the dataset has been refresh and the DefaultPeriod field is correct. This is both an issue in the IDE and on the Report Manager site.

I tried subforms... but do I have to create subform for each field? • DHTMLX Calendar onChange

  I am having an issue with the DHTMLX Calendar with the onChange in the input field. I am initialisating the code with the following: jQuery(document).ready(function($){ var calendar; calendar = new dhtmlXCalendarObject(["date"]); calendar.hideTime(); calendar.setDateFormat("%d/%m/%Y"); $('.lightbox').lightbox(); $('#slider').cycle(); }); function checkDate() { var date = $("[name='date']").val(); alert(date); } In the form i am using: <input type="text" name="date" id="date" onchange="checkDate();" /> How it should be (and was working with JQuery UI datepicker) once the date is entered into the input field the onchange function would fire. However in this case: the onchange with this calendar does nothing. Reason for changing from JQuery UI to this DHTMLX is that JQuery UI Datepicker does not support all platforms (iPhones/iPads etc) and DHTMLX does.

• Ext.data.Store, Javascript Arrays and Ext.grid.ColumnModel

  I am using Ext.data.Store to call a PHP script which returns a JSON response with some metadata about fields that will be used in a query (unique name, table, field, and user-friendly title). I then loop through each of the Ext.data.Record objects, placing the data I need into an array (this_column), push that array onto the end of another array (columns), and eventually pass this to an Ext.grid.ColumnModel object. The problem I am having is - no matter which query I am testing against (I have a number of them, varying in size and complexity), the columns array always works as expected up to columns[15]. At columns[16], all indexes from that point and previous are filled with the value of columns[15]. This behavior continues until the loop reaches the end of the Ext.data.Store object, when the entire arrays consists of the same value. • Using SharePoint label to display document version in Word 2007 doesn't work when moved to another l

  I am surfacing the Document Library version of a Word 2007 document by creating a Label ({version}) within the content type of the Document Library and adding it as a Quick-part Label in the Word 2007 document. This works great. The latest version always shows up when I open the Word document. I also added this Version quick-part field to the footer of the Word document and then added this document as a document template to my content type, "ContentTypeMain". Now, I can go to my Document Library and I can create a New instance of "ContentTypeMain" with the Version field automatically there. This works great as well. However, if I create another Document Library and add the same Content Type, "ContentTypeMain" to it, the value of the Version quick-part doesn't update or refresh. The only way is to add another copy of the Label quick-part. It seems like the Quick-Part Label that maps to the Document Library Version is unique to the Document Library. My application dynamically creates subsites using site definitions and list templates. Thus the document library in each of the subsites are all being created from the same List Template. I inspected the XML files under the hood of the Word Document and it does look like there is a GUID attached to the Quick-Part Version field.

• How to add dynamic profile fields in Invision Power Board?

  I run a game server and want to link the persons in game character name and stats to Invision Power Board. I've setup IPB so players currently login with their in game login. That means their username on the forum is the same as their username for the game. They can have multiple characters on 1 account so ideally I'd like to allow them to choose a main character and display an actual image of that character and allow them to display other characters if they are online. Currently I'm doing something like this by hacking profileFields.php but it's messy and not very efficient on the user or server end. My code currently uses 2 custom fields which the player can enter their character names in. To display only their main character they enter the name in the first field. To also display other characters if they are online they enter the same name into the second field. To resolve the IDs I have to run a lot of queries. I know PHP but I am not familiar with IPBs code at all. I just need pointed in a direction where I can combine the 2 fields into 1 field. tl;dr: Here is my setup: Invision Power Board 3 Data is stored in MySQL on the same server the forum is hosted on. Usernames on the forum are identical to usernames in the game Here is a breakdown of what I'd like to do: In the edit profile section I need to resolve the forum username to the games account id then: Display a list of characters and allow them to choose which characters they want to display if they are online as well as a default character that will be displayed if none are online. In the posts user info pane: Display the online character or the default if none are online. Here is what I need to know: How to generate a list of characters in the profile edit form and allow selection (checkbox) of each character to display as well as the selection of a default character (radio or dropdown?) How to fetch the data and place it in the posts user info pane

• crystal reports : cannot determine the queries necessary to get data for this report

  I've recently come across the following error in one of my crystal reports following an accounting system update. Group #1: ? - A : This group section cannot be printed because its condition field is nonexistent or invalid. Format the section to choose another condition field. I've verified every database field being used to ensure it still exists for consistency and checked the formulas for that section. No dice. So to hopefully fix the problem, i remove the section using the Section expert. I run the same database checks. It then complains with the same error for Group #5. So i remove that as well. now I have a new and unusual error when i attempt to run 'Show Query'. the error is: "Cannot determine the queries necessary to get data for this report" I have tried to logon/logoff the database and verify database. No complaints until i try to run, show query. When I attempt to run the report, it also throws the same error. any ideas? Am I approaching this incorrectly? this is done in crystal reports 10. note: this report is run with the sql sa user to eliminate any permission issues.

Is there a way to have inline forms functionality with crispy-forms/bootstrap like django-admin forms have? On the sreenshot below you are able to fill out data for 'Question' object and below that you are able to add data for QuestionOption objects -you are able to click the '+' icon to add as many QuestionOptions as you want. I'm not looking for a way to get the forms auto-generated from models (that's nice but not the most important) - is there a way to construct a form that will let you add 'rows' of data like django-admin does?
