• Windows Server 2008 R2 time keeps changing unexpectedly

  There is a serious problem with one of my servers time. At some random hours (5:59 localtime in the following example) it goes 1 hour back and keeps doing this again and again next times it reaches 5:59. Like this: 5:59-4:59 … 5:59- 4:59 and so on. It stays in the loop until I manually update its time.   I'm trying to put together a relatively complex flow-chart thing -as part of a University assignment (health-related, and gosh, does my university love all things Microsoft Office...). Because of the way the chart progresses I have to connect two objects with a 'double elbow' version of the 'elbow arrow connector.' I accept that perhaps this complexity means I should redesign the chart, but I've tried and failed to simplify things already. • My linux server takes more than an hour to boot. Suggestions?

  I am building a CentOS 5.4 system that boots off a compact flash card using a card reader that emulates an IDE drive. It literally takes about an hour to boot. The ultra-slow part occurs when Grub is loading the kernel. Once that's done, the rest of the boot process only takes about a minute to get to a login prompt. Does anyone have any suggestions? I suspect that it may have to do with UDMA. Everything IDE-related in my BIOS seems to checkout. The read performance hdparm is telling me 1.77 MB/s. Ouch!   Hello I just read this article which I find concerning: "After 90 minutes of troubleshooting, Nash traced the problem to TeamViewer, which he used to remotely administer the client's servers. It turns out the program had opened up its own webserver on the client's machine as soon as Apache went down and in the process made it impossible for the client, a large provider of business software, to restart its proper website." http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/24/teamviewer_snafu/ I started using TeamViewer recently because it's just much better than UltraVNC (runs on both XP and Vista, the server dials out instead of requiring the user to open a port on their router + better performance than UVNC)... but I thought that TeamViewer had both the server and client connect out to TV's web server for data to flow between the two hosts. Why does TV even need to open a web server on the server host? Thank you.

• Visio 2010 Reverse Engineer Oracle

  I have used Visio 2007 in the past to reverse engineer Oracle databases to get a flow scheme. I believe all Office 2007 products were x86 as well which is where I suspect my issue currently lies. I have since upgraded to Visio 2010 x64 and when I go to reverse engineer something from Oracle it shows up under Installed Visio Drivers but I can't seem to create a data source using it. My assumption here is it is because Oracle doesn't play nicely with x64 and with Visio being compiled as x64 I don't even get the option to use it. Has anyone done this with Visio 2010 x64 and Oracle yet? Or are there other tools you would recommend to reverse engineer and get a model such as the one generated by Visio?

• Shinken - Anyone using it?

  I've recently discovered Shinken, which a new implementation of Nagios using python. Shinken "divides" Nagios in 5 different types of agents, each one performing separated tasks. I haven't tried it yet but for what I've seen the whole architecture idea seems great to me (it works the Unix way: one process, one task), but the project seems a little "green" yet. So, has anyone tried Shinken? What's your opinion?

  Hi, For IDS, I plan to have a Win 2008 server running on the gateway with the majority of roles disabled. I plan to firewall the Internet connection, but I'd also like to install Snort to work as an IDS. However, I am guessing that regardless of the Snort install of the promiscuous Winpcap driver, I won't be able to monitor ports that the firewall blocks. My thinking is that chain of flow is: Internet-Firewall on Win 2008-Winpcap-Snort-internal network Is there a way to still monitor services that the firewall will block (i.e. TCP 445 SMB) ? Perhaps run the data through Snort and then through the firewall ? Thanks

Is there any way to automate it? Wireless connections have a nice little checkbox ("automatically connect when this network is in range") but I couldn't find anything similar for VPN connections. • How to get Word 2003 to make my print layout go from left to right?

  My copy of MS Word 2003 was installed on my computer with the locale set to Israel, so among other things my Normal.dot template was set up for right-to-left. I managed to fix most of the Hebrew support things so that I am working in English by default now. The only thing I haven't found a cure for is how to make the "print layout" view also go from left to right; as things are, the page flow always appears from right to left, even in English documents - IOW, page 1 appears on the right of page 2, as shown below. I can't see any obvious option to change this. How do I do it?
