  Im installing ffmpeg to run on an amazon linux ami, and have added the rpmforge repo and the dag repo. Here are some guidelines I'm using for reference: TWoZaO and Razuna The rpmforge repo has ffmpeg, but if you try to install it then it will complain that is missing dependencies (for me libSDL-1.2.so.0()(64bit)). Regardless I will install ffmpeg from svn so I can be sure to enable the options I want (namely libx264). It seems strange to me though that SDL is not in rpmforge or dag, and in according to both of my references above, it should be there. • What "pieces" are needed in order to set up a cluster of physical servers?

  Background: Currently, we use Rackspace cloud servers. We have no intention to stop using them, but would like to look into setting up a cluster of physical servers (probably desktop computers in the $400 range with 8gb memory each) to offset some of our load and work as a secondary, more powerful, less reliable system. To put things in perspective, we can buy comparable desktop computers for the same price as we pay in one month to rent them on Rackspace Cloud. I understand that this is generally a dumb idea. However, in this particular instance, the server cluster is needed for its computation power. It is not mission-critical, it does not host a consumer-facing website, and if it goes down for a day or two, its not really a problem. Currently, we have access to business class verizon fios. If I understand correctly, we can get at least 25 dedicated IP addresses with this service, this should be enough. Requirements: Each server runs Linux Centos 6.3 Some of the servers run Python and execute processes from a task queue (Redis or RabbitMQ) Some of the servers are capable of serving static files and Python driven REST APIs Some of the servers host a Cassandra database cluster One or more of the servers are a Redis database servers One or more of the servers are PostgreSQL servers Questions: What kind of router or switch is needed? We would like the computers to be able to communicate effectively with each other via internal IP addresses. This is especially important for communicating with servers hosting Redis that need to be able to respond to requests very quickly. Are there special switches or routers that need to be used to connect the servers together? Are Desktop computers ok for this? We have found that we are mostly RAM-bottle necked, I understand that some servers have highly superior CPUs, but I'm not sure we need CPU power as much as we need RAM, which is cheap in Desktop computers. Will we have problems with the WIFI cards in the desktops or any other unexpected hardware limitation? What tools should be used to "image" the servers. For example, when we get an installation right for a Redis server or Cassandra node, are there tools that come with Linux Centos 6.3 to image the server to a USB drive or something like that? Or do we need to use some other software for this? What other things are we missing that we should be concerned about? Thanks so much!

  The specific application is a NAS that hosts media content and is frequently accessed during the day. My NAS was probably cycling on and off around 5 times a day so I decided to not allow it to spin down. I'm thinking this will be better for the drive, but I am not sure. I am wondering, however, if there is any concrete information out there as to what causes more detrimental wear on a hard disk: Spinning 24/7 or cycling on and off as needed?

• Problem with using malloc in link lists (urgent ! help please)

  I've been working on this program for five months now. Its a real time application of a sensor network. I create several link lists during the life of the program and Im using malloc for creating a new node in the link. What happens is that the program suddenly stops or goes crazy and restarts. Im using AVR and the microcontroller is ATMEGA 1281. After a lot of debugging I figured out that that the malloc is causing the problem. I do not free the memory after exiting the function that creates a new link so Im guessing that this is eventually causing the heap memory to overflow or something like that. Now if I use the free() function to deallocate the memory at the end of the function using malloc, the program just gets stuck when the control reaches free(). Is this because the memory becomes too clustered after calling free() ? I also create reference tables for example if 'head' is a new link list and I create another list called current and make it equal to head. table *head; table *current = head; After the end of the function if I use free free(current); current = NULL: Then the program gets stuck here. I dont know what to do. What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to increase the size of the heap memory Please help...

  Hi there, I'm relatively new to java, I'm certain the error is trivial. But can't for the life of me spot it. I have an end of term exam on monday and currently trying to get to grips with past papers! Anyway heregoes, in another method (ALGO_1) I search over elements of and check the value H_NAME equals a value entered in the main. When I attempt to run the code I get a null pointer exception, also upon trying to print (with System.out.println etc) the H_NAME value after each for loop in the snippet I also get a null statement returned to me. I am fairly certain that the collection is simply not storing the data gathered up by the Scanner. But then again when I check the collection size with size() it is about the right size. Either way I'm pretty lost and would appreciate the help. Main questions I guess to ask are: from the readBackground method is the data.add in the wrong place? is the snippet simply structured wrongly? oh and another point when I use System.out.println to check the Background object values name, starttime, increment etc they print out fine.   I want to create the logging of iptables DROP's and intrusion attemps. First, I put --log-prefix "iptables: " at the end of every iptables rules in my iptables rules file. But this doesn't work, as it says there is a syntax error. So where should I put that command? (I would want to have it included in the saved rules file) Secondly, I created a file iptables.conf within /etc/rsyslog.d/, and I put the following inside of it: :msg, startswith, "iptables: " -/var/log/iptables.log & ~ I assume that at this stage, I'm supposed to restart the rsyslog daemon.   Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my capacity planning? In our test environment we have a lot of apps spread out over a few servers and Glassfish domains. To make versioning easier I would have liked to have one Glassfish domain per customer per app (kind of like a heavyweight version of lots of jetty instances). But I have heard that Glassfish is kind of heavy on the resources, and so I would need to measure approximately how many instances would fit in the available RAM. These are low-traffic/low load testing servers, so CPU is not really an issue, though RAM might be. How would I get an approximate measure of how much RAM is needed? This is one Glassfish 3 instance with one heavy EAR application deployed. top? jvmstats? ??

  Hello All: I just downloaded the latest FBConnect build, popped in my keys and getting a mysterious hanging error only when I try to post a feed without previewing (setting preview to zero). The activity indicated disappears and the blank dialog window just hangs there. (This mirrors what I was getting on the app I was developing). If I try to post a feed with preview it works; set preview to zero it just hangs. Again; thats with the sample project "Publish Feed" button. Hitting getting permission button and then Publish Feed does same thing...... Other Developers have confirmed seeing this too...Apps that have previously had working feed posts have been broken for weeks. Discussions on facebook connect forum seem to be related to this. • Urgent help needed on How to update NSMutableDictionary. My code doesn't work.

  I've populated an array using. arrSettings = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithContentsOfFile:[self settingsPath]]; The file is a plist with the root as an array and then a dictionary with three three keys defined as number. I've also tried setting the keys to string. I display the values in the plist file on a view using. diaper = [[arrSettings objectAtIndex:0] objectForKey:@"Diaper Expenses"]; oil = [[arrSettings objectAtIndex:0] objectForKey:@"Oil Used"]; tree = [[arrSettings objectAtIndex:0] objectForKey:@"Wood Used"]; This code works fine, the values in the dictionary are assigned to the variables and they are displayed. The user can make changes and then press a save button. I use this code to extract the dictionary part of the array so I can update it. The assignment to editDictionary works. I've double checked the key names including case and that is correct. editDictionary = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] init]; editDictionary = [arrSettings objectAtIndex:0]; NSNumber *myNumber = [NSNumber numberWithFloat:diaperAmount]; [editDictionary setValue:myNumber forKey:@"Diaper Expenses"]; myNumber = [NSNumber numberWithFloat:oilAmount]; [editDictionary setValue:myNumber forKey:@"Oil Used"]; myNumber = [NSNumber numberWithFloat:treeAmount]; [editDictionary setValue:myNumber forKey:@"Wood Used"]; In this example I've used a nsnumber. Sometimes the first two setvalue statements work, but the last setvalue fails with a EXC_BAD_ACCESS failure. Other times the first setValue fails with the same error. I have no idea why the first two sometimes work. I'm at a loss of what to do next. I've tried several implentations and none of them work. Also, in the debugger how can I display the editDictionary elements. I can see editDictionary, but I don't know how to display the individual elements.
