  • How to determine cpu, ram needed for rails app?

    What is the most accurate way to determine the amount of cpu speed and ram needed to run my rails app? I believe there are stress testing tools like Tsung, but how do I determine, for example, that I need X more ram, or X more CPU? I would like to find some way to roughly gauge the performance needs of my application so I can anticipate future needs. I think this data will also be useful for me to decide whether to upgrade one machine, or get another dedicated machine and put all the databases on that one. Essentially, I am concerned about scaling issues, and how to anticipate them. Thanks in advance for the help!

  • calculated colum or stored proceedure or just php funcion needed ?

    I have an order table in MySQL database and is has a field/column which store the dattime stamp of when the order was placed and I need to calculate when the order must be shipped. I could probably figure out how to right a function to calculate the ship date and call that when ever needed but I think, not sure it may moake more sense to have the shipdate as a column that is somehow calculate in mysql. that being said I have Never used a stored procedure or created a calculated field. the later I think would be best but again not sure. I used to make calculated field all the time in FMP but I've gotten away from that program. if someone could point me in the right direction or tell me why it would be better to do it one way over another I'd appreciate it . thanks Mike

I could probably figure out how to write a function to calculate the ship date and call that when ever needed but I think, not sure it may make more sense to have the shipdate as a calculated column. That being said, I have never used a stored procedure or created a calculated field. The later I think would be best but again not sure.   • How should images be stored when multiple sizes are needed?

    What is the best way to store images? Currently when an image is uploaded I resize it to 3 different sizes (a thumbnail, a normal size, and a large size). I save in a database a description of the image, the format, and use the id number from the database as the image name. Each size image has its own directory. Should I be storing the images in the database? Should I only be storing the larger size and generate the thumbnail as needed? Or any other ideas you have?

    I have a simple application to store Contacts. This application uses a simple relational database to store Contact information, like Name, Address and other data fields. While designing it, I question came to my mind: When designing programs that uses databases, should I retrieve all database records and store them in objects in my program, so I have a very fast performance or I should always gather data only when required? Of course, retrieving all data can only be done if it`s not too many, but do you use this approach when you make sure that the database will be small (< 300 records for example)? I have designed once a similar application that fetches data only when needed, but that was slow (using a Access database). Thanks for all help.

  • android localization: Is it a good practice to have only needed resource to put in localized folder?

    Hi, My application has 4 languages in it. However only one module needs to be localized out of 5, This module has 4 layout files and some images, remaining files can be there in default layout folder and drawable folders. My question is : is it good practice to put only needed files in localization folders, if I leave other files in its respective folders and don't copy them in translation folders, does my application throw NullPointerException when my application runs in other language? and Does android market have any size limit? (Also being a BB developer,AFAIK they do not allow OTA, if the application size grows more than 3 mb) [In case i need to copy the layout and image files]. Note about NullPointerException : it throws in string if you omit some string in localization and application runs in that particular locale. Thanks

  • What is the minimum power supply wattage needed for a Pentium 2.4GHz system?

    It looks like I've got a dead Antec True 330 power supply in an older desktop that has an Intel D845PESV motherboard, a Pentium 2.4GHz processor, 2 dvd/cd writers, 2 hard drives, and other typical devices. I have an even older computer that is not being used that has a 200W power supply. Can a 200W power supply drive what I've listed above? Or, put another way, what is the minimum power supply specs for the above system? (A new 350W power supply will run me $30--so buying a new one is not a problem--but I'm curious about the question nonetheless).

    What NIS maps are necessary for OSX 10.6 to authenticate? I have an ubuntu-sever sharing NIS, and from the OSX client, ypcat passwd, ypcat group and (as root) ypcat shadow.byname all work, and return the correct info. If I type groups kyle (a user in NIS, but not on the local machine), I get all the correct group information. The only thing that doesn't work, is logging in. (And yes, if I point an ubuntu box to that NIS server, everything authenticates off of it just fine).

    I'm developping a multi-tenant web application in ASP.NET MVC and it will provide my users the ability to have a custom subdomain pointing to their account page (like user.myapp.com). I already have it working by using a wildcard DNS entry and a code to query the database to load the user data based on the domain. I'm planning to offer the possibility of using custom domains, allowing the users to buy their own domains and use it instead of the subdomains that will be provided by default. I currently use DNSMadeEasy to host the DNS for the application main domain. I just don't know what kind of settings I must make to allow this feature to work, since the users will have domains hosted in several companies. Will I have to create my own nameservers and provide it to my users? What other things I must consider to implement it efficiently?

  • Advice needed: warm backup solution for SQL Server 2008 Express?

    What are my options for achieving a warm backup server for a SQL Server Express instance running a single database? Sitting beside my production SQL Server 2008 Express box I have a second physical box currently doing nothing. I want to use this second box as a warm backup server by somehow replicating my production database in near real time (a little bit of data loss is acceptable). The database is very small and resources are utilized very lightly. In the case that the production server dies, I would manually reconfigure my application to point to the backup server instead. Although Express doesn't support log shipping natively, I am thinking that I could manually script a poor man's version of it, where I use batch files to take the logs and copy them across the network and apply them to the second server at 5 minute intervals. Does anyone have any advice on whether this is technically achievable, or if there is a better way to do what I am trying to do? Note that I want to avoid having to pay for the full version of SQL Server and configure mirroring as I think it is an overkill for this application. I understand that other DB platforms may present suitable options (eg. a MySQL Cluster), but for the purposes of this discussion, let's assume we have to stick to SQL Server.

    I have downloaded the newest most stable Linux kernel, 2.6.33.2. I thought I would test this using VirtualBox. So I create a dynamically sized harddisk of 4 GB. And installed CentOS 5.3 with just the minimum packages. I setup the make menuconfig with just the default settings.     I welcome better key-wording here, both on tags and title. I'm trying to conceive a free, open and secure network environment that would work anywhere, from big enterprises to small home networks of just 1 machine. I think since wireless Access Points are the most, if not only, true weak point of a Local Area Network (let's not consider every other security aspect of having internet) there would be basically two points to consider here: Having an open AP for anyone to use the internet through Leaving the whole LAN also open for guests to be able to easily read (only) files on it, and even a place to drop files on Considering these two aspects, once everything is done properly... What's the most secure option between having that, or having just an encrypted password-protected wifi? Of course "both" would seem "more secure". But it shouldn't actually be anything substantial. I've always had the feeling using any kind of the so called "wireless security" methods is actually a bad design. I'm talking mostly about encrypting and pass-phrasing (which are actually two different concepts), since I won't even consider hiding SSID and mac filtering. I understand it's a natural way of thinking. With cable networking nobody can access the network unless they have access to the physical cable, so you're "secure" in the physical way. In a way, encrypting is for wireless what building walls is for the cables. And giving pass-phrases would be adding a door with a key. So, what do you think?

Accessible from external network. Support for Windows XP (and above), Mac OS 10.6.3 and Ubuntu clients. When it comes down to security we don't have the experience to comment on that.   • How to do IIS SSL server redirects correctly? Is meta refresh needed?

    Hi all! I think our backend programmer/server admin is handling our SSL redirects pretty wonky - see it in action here: www.mchenry.edu/parentorientation First off, see how it redirects to index2.asp? Is this necessary? Can't she easily redirect to the original index.asp but have it be https:// instead? Also, she is using a meta refresh on the original index.asp page to redirect to index2.asp as well, and she says this is for backup, in case the server configs change and the server can't handle the redirect so then the webpage would take over. Finally, she said she tried using the server redirect solely but that it kept looping on itself- what did she do wrong? Is this even possible? Is she giving us a snow job or what? I want a better understanding of what is happening here so I can talk to my boss about it, because this is driving me up the wall. Thanks for any info you can provide.

    I have a fairly powerful database server having SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. There is only one database on it which is being accessed from 2 servers (around 5/6 applications). The problem is as soon as applications start pointing to the database, system's CPU usage goes upto 100% with sqlserver itself using 95+%. I have checked profiler, there aren't any heavy queries running there. I have checked active connections, they are hardly 150. Still CPU usage is around 100% and applications are experiencing slow response/connection to database server are getting refused. Database grus, I really need some ideas here. Thanks.

Suppose a particular video is at max requested by 1000 users at the same instant of time, how many copies would be sufficient so that parallel streams can be provided to each user? Ideally 1 copy would solve the purpose, but what is the optimum number keeping the bandwidth and simultaneous access in mind?
