  I'm a bit unsure about the Usage Information and Limits of Yahoo YQL. Per application limit (identified by your Access Key): 100,000 calls per day. Per IP limits: /v1/public/: 1,000 calls per hour; /v1/yql/: 10,000 calls per hour. Do I require an application/access key for the /v1/public/ interface, non of the examples uses one. If I don't need an application key and only access the /v1/public/ interface I only have do worry about the IP limits of 1,000 calls per hour, right?

• What operating systems available for an 8-bit microprocessor?

  It does not need to be a full fledged OS, but at least have multitasking capabilities (i.e. a scheduler). Please mention what processor architecture it works on. This is a survey, so exact capabilities are not really important. Think of this as being a place to look at for possibilities when your next 8-bit embedded project comes up... I realize that most 8-bit micro do not require an OS, but just as a counter-example, Rabbit Semiconductor offers the RCM3710 processor module with 4 serial ports, a 10-BaseT ethernet port, 512K RAM and 512K Flash. All that for $39. All based around an 8-bit Z80 core. 8-bit does NOT necessarily mean extreme resource constraint.

• Process Memory limit of 64-bit process

  I currently have a 32-bit .Net application (on x86 Windows) which require lots of memory. Recently it started throwing System.OutOfMemoryException's. So, I am planning to move it to a x64 platform as 64-bit process. So will this help with the out of memory exceptions. I was reading this article from MSDN Memory limits for Windows So, my question is if I compile a 64bit .Net application, will it have IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE set as default (As the article suggests)? i.e will I be able to take advantage of the 8GB user-mode virtual address space?

  Hi everybody, I have a little (maybe the answer could require a book) question about web services and server side programming. But first, a little preamble. Recently we have seen new kind of applications & games using some kind of real-time interaction with a database, or more generally, with other users. I'm talking about shared drawing canvas, games like this , or simple chats, or the Android app "a World of Photo", where in real time you see who is online, to share your photos, etc. Now my question: Are all these apps based on classic TCP client/server architectures or is there a way to make them in a simpler way, like a web platform like LAMP? What I'm asking, in other words is: Can PHP+MySQL (or JSP, or RoR, or any other server language) provide a way to make online users communicate in real time and share data? Is there a way to do that without the ugly and heavy mechanism of temporary tables? Thank you! I hope I've been clear.

• differences between using wmode="transparent", "opaque", "window" for an embedded object on webpage

  when embedding a Flash object with the <object and <embed tag, there is an attribute called "wmode". It seems that most of the time, wmode="transparent" is the same as wmode="opaque" as the Flash doesn't actually have any transparent color so that the bottom HTML element is to be shown. As a result, "opaque" should be faster than "transparent" since it require less processing for transparency, yet most of the time i see Flash object embedded with "transparent" instead of "opaque". "opaque" is needed so that other HTML element won't be covered up by the Flash object. (such as a menu item that pops up an extra sub-menu won't be covered up by the Flash object). By the way, is there formal documentation for wmode's "opaque", "transparent", and "window"? I was only able to find blogs that describe it but not the formal documentation. thanks.

  Is it just me or there is a serious dearth of Front End Web Developer positions for recent grads. I have been working as one for the last 6 months now after my graduation and I understand that most of the front-end skills are not taught at academia and the profession requires a lot of discipline and patience to learn them on your own. I see a plethora of opportunities for recent grads for back-end positions but very few for front end positions. Does the industry have an understanding that Front-End positions require more expertise than back-end positions? Just my thoughts but not many people seem to keen to hire recent grads for front-end positions.

  I have a WPF application targetting the .NET 4.0 Client Profile which needs to use the Microsoft.WindowsAzure.* assemblies provided in the Windows Azure SDK 1.1. The problem is that these assemblies have a runtime version of v2.0.50727. I am able to add references to them from my WPF project but they're not recognised. I've read about the side by side execution capabilities of .NET 4.0 but does this require both the .NET 2.0 and the .NET 4.0 frameworks to be installed? Is there anything from Microsoft on when a new SDK might be available that contains assemblies targeting .NET 4.0?

• Allow member to be const while still supporting operator= on the class

  I have several members in my class which are const and can therefore only be initialised via the initialiser list like so: class MyItemT { public: MyItemT(const MyPacketT& aMyPacket, const MyInfoT& aMyInfo) : mMyPacket(aMyPacket), mMyInfo(aMyInfo) { } private: const MyPacketT mMyPacket; const MyInfoT mMyInfo; }; My class can be used in some of our internally defined container classes (e.g. vectors), and these containers require that operator= is defined in the class. Of course, my operator= needs to do something like this: MyItemT& MyItemT::operator=(const MyItemT& other) { mMyPacket = other.mPacket; mMyInfo = other.mMyInfo; return *this; } which of course doesn't work because mMyPacket and mMyInfo are const members. Other than making these members non-const (which I don't want to do), any ideas about how I could fix this?

  Hello, I have few questions regarding dynamic casting , typeid() and templates 1) How come typeid does not require RTTI ? 2) dynamic_cast on polymorphic type: When I do downcast (Base to Derive) with RTTI - compilation passes When RTTI is off - I get a warning (warning C4541: 'dynamic_cast' used on polymorphic type 'CBase' with /GR-; unpredictable behavior may result) When I do upcast (Derive to Base), with or without RTTI - compilation passes smoothly What I don't understand is why when I do upcast and RTTI is off - I don't get any warning/error! 3) dynamic_cast on NON polymorphic type: When I do downcast with or without RTTI - compilation fails (error C2683: 'dynamic_cast' : 'CBase' is not a polymorphic type) BUT When I do upcast with or without RTTI - compilation passes smoothly. How come on upcast on NON polymorphic type passes w/o RTTI ? 4) Does 'inline' in front of a template function has any effect, i.e. when the compiler compiles the function and see it is 'inline' it will actually treat the function as inline or it is ignored? • Reset Java Applet on page reload

  I need to quit firefox and restart it in order for the applet to be refreshed... its anoying since i'm still programming it an the class files changes... am i missing some codes which makes it unable to refresh the applet and still take the one from the cache??? So I have a .jar applet in my website, a simulation game that spawns army whenever user clicks on the screen... however whenever I refresh the page, the previous army are still there on the screen.. I want it to be refreshed (as if we're just starting to run the application the first time). I already tried pressing CTRL+f5 but the trick doesn't seem to work I'd basically like to do it automatically using scripts or something, so that it won't require user to manually press some button on the keyboard Any Suggestions? • python modules difference: .c/.h vs. .py

  I'm very new to python, as i'm embedding it (in form of a static lib) in an ios project. It's not possible for me to dynamically load python modules, so i would like to compile my modules along with python. For modules shipped with the python source this works (by modifying setup.py or Module/Setup), but when i downloaded a third party module i noticed, i don't fully understand the mechanism. The modules shipped with python come with a .c file in the Modules dir as well as a .py file in the Lib dir. My third party module just comes with .py files. 1.Why do those modules have different file extensions? 2.How to integrate a module coming with .py files in an embedded python version? Obviously pasting them in Modules/Setup does require some .c files. 3.Do these .c files have something to do with the Python C-Api? I guess i'm missing something essential :) Help is much appreciated.

• Mysql results sorted by list which is unique for each user

  Ive got a table of thousands of products and 50 or so authenticated users. These users all show the products on their own web sites and they all require the ability to have them ordered differently. Im guesing i need some kind of seperate table for the orders which contains the product_id, user_id and order column? How do i do this the most efficiently in mysql so as to be very fast, and not slow down if i get millions of products in the database. Is it even wise to do it in mysql or should i be using some kind of other index like solr/lucene? My Product table is called "products" My User table is called "users" A good example of the functionality i need is google search where you can order/supress the results if you are logged in. edit: the product results will be paginated and the users have the authority to edit the products, so its not just ready only

• how to run fastcgi

  I have fastcgi installed and running. I downloaded a developerkit from fastcgi.com. It had some examples in it. One of the example files echos some stuff. It required a .libs and a .deps I put those folders along with a echo.fcgi file and into the webroot/cgi-bin. If I got to the echo.fcgi url, it works great. I created a simple c file that prints hello world. I compile it using gcc -Wall -o main -lfcgi main.c What do I do with it now? Does it require something like a perl script or php script to be executed. Or, should I just be able to put it in the webroot/cgi-bin folder and go to it's url?

  Hello, We are soon to get VS2010 and according to the link below, Microsoft do not support VS2010 on XP x64. http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-editions/professional/system-requirements Does anyone have XP 64bit running VS2010? I am not interested in 64bit version of VS (I am wanting to install a 32bit version of VS2010 professional on a 64 bit XP machine). I am aware that XP will require SP3. Any warnings? Horror stories? Advice?

  Hopefully some Custom Control Designers/Builders can help I'm attempting to build my first custom control that is essential a client detail collection form. There are to be a series of elements to this form that require various styles applied to them. Ideally I'd like the VS 2005/2008 properties interface to be able to apply the CSSClass as it does at the control level, i.e. with a dropdown list of available CSS Clases. • Too many open files error in Glassfish3 while using https listener

  I have a problem running webservice that requires https connection(Glassfish3). After running for a while, it eventually crashes. Log file show "Failed to load keystore type JKS with path ....config/keystore.jks due to ...config/keystore.jks (Too many open files)". lsof shows that a number of open files are constantly increasing (among others, I noticed that there are many files with type 'sock' and undefined protocol that never get closed). I tried changing the limit of open files, but it resulted in a longer time before crashing... I blamed the webservice, but everything works fine if the application doesn't require confidential protocol. Did I miss anything in http listener configuration ? Or it is rather an application error? • FIPS-compliant encryption in .NET 2.0

  We have a .NET 2.0 application that uses the RijindaelManaged class to encrypt some sensitive data. This was fine until we ran into some machines that require the use of FIPS-compliant algorithms. We'd like to switch to AesCryptoServiceProvider, but most of our target machines haven't upgraded past .NET 2.0. Requiring an upgrade is out of the question. After all, upgrades are scary! Is there any way we could use AesCryptoServiceProvider in a .NET 2.0 application? Since 3.5 uses the 2.0 CLR, I was hoping there might be a way to build the needed libraries into the app. Failing that, could someone point me to a reference on the native API that's wrapped by AesCryptoServiceProvider?

  hey , I'm trying to change an AJAX accordion layout on the client-side. How can I make it so that when the page loads, the selected pane is opened? At the moment, I have this: Sys.require(Sys.components.accordion, function() { $("#accordion").accordion({ HeaderCssClass: "acc_header", HeaderSelectedCssClass: "acc_selectedheader", FadeTransitions: true, requireOpenedPane: false }); }); This works. However, if I add SelectedIndex = 1, it still starts off with the top pane opened and everything else closed. I tried change the 1 to other numbers (including -1), but it doesn't make a difference. Have I missed something here? (It's placed in an updatepanel, if that makes a difference) Thanks

  I posted a question a couple of days ago (SQL Reporting Services Daylight saving time query) which was I received an answer for (thanks very much) but did not elaborate on the whole problem I am experiencing. Not only did I require the returned date time format to account for day light saving but I also need the search parameter @StartDate to allow for DST. Currently if I key in a scheduled start time of 31/03/2010 11:00 and because the SQL DB has already taken the hours difference into consideration I get no results back. If I key in 31/03/2010 10:00 then the correct details are returned. Is there away using T-SQL or the like to get the search parameter to pass the adjusted time to the DB?

• Change the install directory for an OSX Package

  It drives me nuts that every time I download a binary to run on OSX that it wants to install in system directories. ~/Applications is a perfectly fine place to install and doesn't require blindly authenticating somebody else's binary. Is there a way to change the install directory for packages? On a few I've been able to open the package and edit the plist to install it elsewhere, but that doesn't work universally. I install from source when I can, but it isn't always an option. Is there a good way to force the installer to use ~/Applications?

• Why should I use MVVM when it breaks built in riaservices functionality

  I'm struggling to grasp why MVVM is really a good pattern to implement in riaserivces, To me there's nothing but trouble to it, it just add's another tier that I have to code. I Get that I could change the UI, but really I don't need to. Instead i won't be able to user out of the box functionality with riaservices, datagrid, dataform all controls require some implementation. Why can't it just be simple? Is there really no way to get MVVM to automatically set "IsBusy" and all the dataform edit functionality. It's like reinventing the wheel to me, and it seems that I'd be able to write code much faster just using riaservices
