• Free (Or Cheap) Alternatives For An SSL Certificate For Facebook Apps

  In October (from what I remember) Facebook will require HTTPS connections to pages and app's that are hosted away from Facebook. At the moment, it comes up with a popup saying "do you want to turn secure browsing off". I think (as far as I know) that once October comes people won't be able to access these pages any more. Now, I know you have to pay for good SSL certificates. However, for a lot of clients this is just going to be a Facebook page, and not mission critical to their businesses. With this in mind, they may not want to pay for an SSL certificate. I was wondering if there are any free SSL certificates that could do the job? Even if there are no free ones, are there any cheap alternatives? Also, if you do use a free certificate, will it still work in the same way as a paid for certificate?

  I am trying to understand how does embed link works in Google+ Stream. I manage a site and usually every post contains some text and at least an image. But when I try to embed the link to a certain article on my blog the embed feature does not show the article text and images, but instead it shows the header image of my site plus some other header text content. Do you know how should I tag or code the article part so that Google+ parser recognize the right thing I want to show?

  I'm working on an Easter Island website and I'm currently redesigning my image system. Virtually all my photos are of Easter Island. My question is, should I always include the keywords "Easter Island" for Google to easier understand that my photos are from Easter Island, or is it sufficient that the "Easter Island" keywords are in the domain, as well as in all other pages of the site? For example, Alt text 1: "Moai statues at volcano Rano Raraku at Easter Island (Rapa Nui)" or Alt text 2: "Moai statues at volcano Rano Raraku" Would example 1 be considered keyword stuffing by Google

• How to discredit hacked links pointing at my company's website

  The competition of one of my company's websites has started a really dirty campaign of acquiring hack links. One of their ingenious tactics has been to seed in links to OUR site withing their hack bot, making US look like we might be responsible for it or using us to cover their tail. These are .gov and .edu sites. Is there any way possible to discredit these links? To disavow them at all? EDIT: Penguin has really effected this question, IMO. Does anyone know if there is a revised opinion on disavowing backlinks to your site?

• Using AdSense to show ads to logged-in users

  I know that you can grant authorization permissions to Google AdSense so that it can 'log in' and see what other logged in users can see (e.g. in a private forum), so that the ads it displays are better targetted. Extending this principle further: I am making a site which will show completely different content for each individual user (i.e. not 'common' content like a forum in which everybody sees essentially the same thing). You could think of this content as similar to the way each Facebook user has a different news feed, but it is the 'same' page. Complicating things further, the URLs for this site will be simple, e.g. '/home' and '/somepage', and will not usually include unique identifiers to differentiate between users (e.g. '/home?user=32i42'). My questions are: Is creating an account purely for AdSense to log in to the site with worth it in this case, seeing as it will be seeing it's own 'personalized' version and not any other user's? More importantly: is that against the Google AdSense Terms of Service? (I can't seem to figure that one out) How would you go about this problem?

• Oversizing images to produce better looking pages?

  In the past, improper image resizing used to be a big no-no of web design (not mentioning improper compression format). Hence, for years I have been sticking to the policy where images (PNG or JPG) are resized on the server to match the resolution pixel-wise they will have with the rendered page. Now, recently, I hastily designed a HTML draft with oversized images, using inline CSS style such as width:123px and height:123px to resize the images. To my (slight) surprise, the page turned out to look much better that way. Indeed, with better screen resolution, some people (like me), tend to browse with some level of zoom (aka 125% or even 150% zoom), otherwise fonts are just too small on-screen. Then, if the image is strictly sized, the enlarged image appears blurry (pixel interpolation effect), but if the image is oversized the results is much better. Obviously, oversizing images is not an acceptable pattern if your website is intended for mobile browsing, but is there case where it would be considered as acceptable? Especially if the extra page weight is small anyway.

• Blogger Dynamic template sometimes broken

  In all browsers (IE, Chrome, etc.) in my office and in all Blogger blogs using the dynamic template, I'm having this strange problem: No menu on the right side (except for the Subscribe button - other buttons are missing) plus no layout selection bar (top row). This problem is occasional, not happening reliably; any ideas? Update: whenever I get the menu problem with dynamic templates, I also seem to get a broken page (in Chrome, IE, etc) with simple templates - see second screenshot. Does anyone having this issue?

• Web Host for Small Rails-based CMS site [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am building a site for someone that uses a Rails-based content management system that I built myself. All of the Rails deployment experience I have so far has been over small intranets. I'm looking at web hosts like rackspace, because it seems like they're well-suited for Rails deployment. However, for a site that's not going to have more than a couple of hundred hits a month (if even that), I'm not sure it's necessary. I've also used Dreamhost's Phusion Passenger deployment for small projects before, but it seems barely functional and not well-supported, and I've also used Heroku for deployment, but I think a regular web host may do a little bit better, as they'll need things like Google Apps for Gmail set up. If anyone could provide some guidance on this, I'd greatly appreciate it. I get confused when I see things on rackspace like "1.5c/hour", because I'm not sure how that gets computed.

• What are the correct settings for a subdomain in ZoneEdit?

  I want to create a subdomain for a site hosted by Jimdo (a DIY website builder). Jimdo does not allow subdomains however. I am trying to find a workaround where a subdomain is hosted elsewhere but everything else remains as it is. E.g. I use their email service and I want to keep it. The domain is not hosted by Jimdo, but by a host that allows me to edit my zones. It points to the Jimdo NS. I have independent hosting where I have NS information. This is where I want to host my subdomain. My thinking was that I could use ZoneEdit as a "fork" that allows me to keep using my Jimdo page like before and, at the same time, directs a subdomain to another host. Provided this is possible: Question: How do I configure ZoneEdit CNAME or NS records to forward visitors to my website and my email to my Jimdo mail account while pointing a subdomain to another host?

• Changing the RSS and Dynamic Views layout when using Blogger as a Podcast index

  I'm trying to set up a podcast service at present. This is just a 'spare time' task - so I wanted a quick, easy way to do it. To get this working: I've ripped (with owner permission) some YouTube content across to MP3 and hosted this content on Azure Blob Storage. I've posted blog posts - with linked mp3 content - inside a Blogger website. I've registered the RSS feed with iTunes This all seems to be working OK - http://dotnetmobilepodcast.blogspot.co.uk/ However, when it comes to a couple of final touches, then I'm hitting problems. RSS I would like to add iTunes metadata to the RSS feed. However, I can't find any way to do this inside the Blogger system. To workaround this I've tried using FeedBurner with its StreamCast plugin. However, the output from FeedBurner doesn't seem to be accepted by iTunes - e.g. http://feeds.feedburner.com/MobileAppCSharpPodcasts leads to this very unhelpful 11111 message: Is there any other way I can get this iTunes metadata content into the Blogger RSS feed - e.g. maybe an alternative service or a Yahoo! Pipe? Showing the MP3 files in the Blog I'm trying to work out how to automatically display the linked enclosures inside the blog posts - do the blogger Dynamic Views don't seem to have any way of doing this? I've found the HTML in those views very difficult to follow. If necessary I can workaround this using manual entries into each blog post... but I'd prefer to do this programatically if I can.

• Google analytics - drop in traffic

  Bit of a general question here. We are in the process of converting a number of our clients from older web sites to new ones. The problem we are getting, and sorry for being so general here, is we are getting a sharp decline in traffic as reported on Google Analytics. It's not a gradual decline, it seems to hit almost as soon as the new site goes live. I've just got a few questions to see if there is something we are doing wrong: a) We are using the same analytics accounts going from old to new site. Is this a bad idea? b) The actual analytics code is integrated into the pages using a server-side include. IS this a bad idea? c) We structure our sites differently to our old site. IE. The old sites would pretty must have all the web pages in the root directory, and hyperlinks would be linked to the page files: EG. <a href="somepage.aspx">Link</a> Our new sites now have a directory structure that pretty much reflects the navigation structure, and hyper links link to the pages directory instead of the actual page: EG. <a href="/new-items/shoes/">New shoes</a> Is this a bad idea. I'm really searching for a needle in a haystack here. Would appriciate any help or advice as to why we are getting such a sharp and sudden drop in traffic. Again, so this is such a general question.   Ok So I've got multiple tomcat instances setup on several AJP ports, I also have Apache httpd listening on port 8090 (cos I've got another app already using 8080 at the moment). I've successfully mapped urls such as mydomain.com:8090/demo and mydomain.com:8090/preprod to their respective tomcat instances using Jk Mount and the following vhosts config; <VirtualHost *:8090> JkMount /preprod* preprod JkMount /demo* demo </VirtualHost> But I also want the "root" address to map to another tomcat instance, what will become live/production, ie I want mydomain.com:8090/ to map a 3rd tomcat instance. At the moment nothing happens or changes if I just add to the above config a line; JkMount /* rootwar if I browse to mydomain.com:8090 I just get the same boring apache httpd landing page letting me know its running (ie index.html in httpd/htdocs) Is it possible to use JkMount to redirect the "root" address stuff to a tomcat instance? I can see that a rule like /* will also match URLs like mydomain.com/preprod but I was hoping the rules are applied in order so if /* appears at the end it effectively would be a "if its not one of the other environments, then direct to root/production" Just to be clear I'm trying to setup the following; mydomain.com:8090/preprod --> myApp running in tomcat1 mydomain.com:8090/demo --> myApp running in tomcat2 mydomain.com:8090 --> myApp running in tomcat3

  Use Case: Photos are organised in a folder structure by date (by software lightroom/picasa) Want to run a local webserver to host a web gallery from (already know how to run lamp etc) I want to be able to attach metadata to the photos (probably through a database not residing in the photos folder) such that they can be tagged/categoried/albumed without affecting the original photos I want to be able to assign permissions to different albums to set users I want the software to watch the photo source folder for changes so that new photos are indexed ready for applying metadata and albums. I'd like the software to handle the rendering of numerous file types (photo formats) as well as video formatts I am language agnostic so php/python heck even c#, just want software that forfills the requirements.   If you run a SaaS app, or work on one, I would love to hear from you. Where the safety and security of your customer's data is paramount, how do you secure it and back it up? I would love to know your main host (e.g. Heroku, Engine Yard, Rackspace, MediaTemple, etc.) and who you use for your backup. Be as detailed as possible - e.g. a quick overview of your service and the data you store (images for instance), what happens with the images when the user uploads them (e.g. they go to your Linode VPS, and posted to the site for them to see - then they are automatically sent to AWS or wherever, then once a week they are backed up to tape by the managed hosting provider, and you also back them up to your house/office). If you could also give some idea as to what the unit cost (per GB/per user/per month) of storage is - on average, I would really appreciate that. Getting ready to launch my app, and I would love to get some more perspective on the nitty gritty details involved. Thanks!

• google analytics - real-time user stats vs audience overview user stats

  When looking at the real-time analytics reporting for our app, it shows around 150-180 users, say around 10AM (our peak usage time). When I look at the Audience Overview report for the same day (hourly breakdown), the number of users shown for the 10AM hour is over 1000. I'm sure this has to do with some sort of aggregation, but I would like to know more about how these two numbers are calculated in order to understand it.
