Homegroup doesn't show other computers, but "Network" does

I have a desktop and a laptop (both running windows 7) in my Windows 7 homegroup. The desktop created the homegroup, and the laptop joined it. Both share a few folders. On the laptop, I have no problem accessing the Desktop's shared folders via the "Homegroup" sidebar button in Windows Explorer. However, on the Desktop, I get the message No other homegroup computers are currently available in the homegroup screen. However, if I go to the Network page, I can see the other computer and browse its shared media. These shares were made by right clicking and choosing "Share with Homegroup". I can access the media, so this isn't a big problem, but I'm just confused as to why the Homegroup screen denies the existence of the other computer. Has anybody else encountered and resolved this?

Can you declare <canvas> methods within a template in javascript?

Not entirely sure I posed the question in the best way but here goes... I have been playing around with the HTML5 canvas API and have got as far as drawing a shape in the canvas and getting it to move around with the arrow keys. I then tried to move my various variables and functions to a template so I could spawn multiple shapes (that would eventually be controlled by different keys). I'm probably going about it all the wrong way and I think the problem is that I'm trying to manipulate the canvas.context (call zone in my script) from within a object/template. Perhaps its nothing to do with that at all and I an just not declaring my persona functions properly in the context of the template. Documentation for the canvas API is very thin on the ground and any hint in the right direction will be very much appreciated.

Windows hangs on Rename, Delete and Move for specific MKV files

I have been googling this issue for a long time, and no full solutions seem to be out there. For certain mkv files, windows hangs when moving, copying, or deleting. These files play fine in a player such as GOM player. System: a fast windows 7, 64 bit box. Results: CPU change is negligible Memory usage rockets up to ~100% In cased of delete or move, "discovering files" dialogue box stays up for a long time Rename simply shows spinning icon until it finishes Action is completed after EXTREMELY long amount of time Memory usage does not return to normal "Fixes:" Disable thumbnail creation (helps for some cases) After move/rename/delete kill explorer with taskmanager, and relaunch to re-claim your memory Even with the thumbnails turned off, the issue persists. I have also tried re-muxing a file, which worked fine, but still resulted in a file with the same above issues.

I have the following scenario: EX2200 Switch whit ge-0/0/6 set as an access port on VLAN 80 ge-0/0/0 set as a trunk port connected to a catalyst switch and various vlans allowed to pass includin vlan 80 On the Catalyst Switch. port #3 set up as a trunk port that receives traffic from the EX switch. port 46 is set up also as a trunk port that connects to a cisco router. Port #48 is where the host used to be connected host - EX2200 - Catalyst - Router the problem is that this EX2200 is a new addition to the network and the host connected previosly to the catalyst switch. traffic is not getting from the host to the router, but the router can send ARP request to the host. following is the relevant configuration: Catalyst Switch: interface GigabitEthernet1/46 switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q switchport trunk allowed vlan 80,82,83,93,289 switchport mode trunk mtu 1532 media-type rj45 speed 1000 duplex full arp timeout 300 ! interface GigabitEthernet1/48 switchport access vlan 80 switchport mode access mtu 1532 media-type rj45 speed 100 duplex full arp timeout 300 no cdp enable ! Write to windows share

I used to mount a windows share in Ubuntu server, with an entry in fstab: //data/SharedFolder /media/SharedFolder/ smbfs user,defaults,credentials=/root/.creds,uid=root,gid=root 0 0 /root/.creds is a text file with three lines, my username, password and domain. Users on the ubuntu server could write to this mount, but then I upgraded to 10.04 and now only root can write. Regular users can still read though. mount currently tells me: //data/SharedFolder on /media/SharedFolder type cifs (rw,mand,noexec,nosuid,nodev) How do I make it world writeable again? Thanks

My Music Folder Appearing On Desktop

Hello, I use Windows 7 and have recently been encountering a problem with the My Music folder. I keep all my music on an external hard drive and use a third party program such as VLC to play albums. I also have a large list of single MP3s that I play in WinAmp. Neither of these cause any problem but whenever I play a song in the bundled Windows Media Player a new My Music shortcut appears on the desktop. WMP is my default player, I've tried changing it to other players but whenever I use WMP it still creates this shortcut. The My Music folder is empty as all music is stored on the external hard drive and I've set WMP to collate, store and retain no information about anything, so I don't think it's anything to do with playlist history or anything. Any ideas what might be happening? Any help in solving this annoyance is appreciated.

Conflicting answers from du with different units

My question is quite simple. I get this output when checking the total amount of space I'm using on my Walkman. david@Milton:/media$ du -b --max-depth=0 WALKMAN/ 14823290693 WALKMAN/ david@Milton:/media$ du -k --max-depth=0 WALKMAN/ 14523776 WALKMAN/ Last I checked, 14,523,776 KB * 1024 = 14,872,646,624 B, not 14,823,290,693. Dividing the two, their "K" unit seems to be equal to about 1020.62 rather than 1024 as advertised. This is causing some errors in the program I wrote to sync my Walkman, so it fills up faster than it claims to. Can anyone explain this discrepency?

Linux WD30EZRX WD Green HDD & Blacx Duet 5G Usb

I have connected up an WD30EZRX WD Green HDD to a Thermaltake Blacx Duet 5G USB dock in Ubuntu 12.04. Every thing seems fine except when the HDD idles it seems to have error ls: reading directory .: Input/output error after a while and is only fixed by unmounting and remounting the drive as root. I have the following line in /etc/fstab UUID=AAF670E9F670B6E3 /media/3TB ntfs defaults,user,auto 0 0 I have noticed that it seems to go between /dev/sdc2 and /dev/sdd2 devices on remount. I did copy 1TB last night without issue in 1 sitting. But after x mins of idle it has remount issue. Any tips/suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated. Spent most of the night googling and all its done is made me sad. Edit (tried as suggested): root@mediaserver:/media/3TB# sudo hdparm -B 255 -S 253 /dev/sdd2 /dev/sdd2: setting Advanced Power Management level to disabled HDIO_DRIVE_CMD failed: Input/output error setting standby to 253 (vendor-specific) APM_level = not supported Seems as if that didn't help with this particular drive.

change owner/uid of mount point upon mount

The scenario is like this. Bob has a computer. It crashed. Now he only has the hdd. The hdd is in ext3 format. He go to his office and told the sys admin John to mount this hdd and put the mount point in his home directory. He could access his old extra and windows. Specially the Documents and Settings in windows was helpful for him. But he found a problem. He is a web developer and all his websites are in linux/home/bob/public_html directory. When he tried to access that public_html directory he got permission_denied. As he is the admin of the current system. He created his account first. so Johns uid was 1000. Bob also setup his private system and crated his account first. So Bobs uid was 1000 too. So thats an expected behavior. But problem remains. How can Bob access those websites in public_html?

Why is the latency on one LVM volume consistently higher?

I've got a server with LVM over RAID1. One of the volumes has a consistently higher IO latency (as measured by the diskstats_latency munin plugin) than the other volumes from the same group. As you can see, the dark orange /root volume has consistently high IO latency. Actually ten times the average latency of the physical devices. It also has the highest Min and Max values. My main concern are not the peaks, which occur under high load, but the constant load on (semi-)idle. The server is running Debian Squeeze with the VServer kernel and has four VServer containers and one KVM guest. I'm looking for ways to fix - or at least understand - this situation. How to make VLC show single FLAC file containing many tracks as separate tracks

I have a single .flac file that encompasses multiple tracks comprising a music album along with the corresponding .cue file. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with VLC player, and am trying to get VLC player to show the individual tracks and allow me to use the previous and next controls to move back and forth between tracks. The problem I'm having is that when I open the single .flac file with VLC, it just shows a single track the duration of the entire album, and I'm unable to skip back and forth between tracks. Is there any way to have VLC show the individual tracks contained within a .flac file without having to pre-split the .flac file into individual track files first?

Install Windows 8 64-bit over the top of Windows 8 32-bit

I currently have Windows 8 32-bit installed from MSDN (I didn't realise at the time that my processor supports 64-bit). I understand that you can't upgrade within Windows 32-bit to 64-bit directly from the ISO. I have burned the ISO to a DVD, and have attempted booting from this drive. The problem I am encountering: The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors. File: CI.dll Error code: 0xc0000221 You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer. Additional info: Computer: HP Pavillion m9280.uk-a Processor: AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-Core RAM: 3 1GB sticks Thanks in advance!

Movie colors are off on ubuntu using Movieplayer?

I've been playing with a new SLR that also happens to record movies. When I try to view a movie using Movie Player, it plays fine, and the sound is there, but the colors are off - green grass is purple, and my golden retriever is a blue retriever. VLC reports that the file is broken, offers to repair it, and plays it with the same problem. The same file plays fine under WinXP with both Media Player and Quicktime, and with no problems under MacOS also with Quicktime. What's the problem, and how can I fix it?

I need a relatively cheap host, which will be able to handle sudden peaks in traffic?

Hello, We're launching a product in a few months, which will obviously have a website. Judging from our current traffic, we believe that overall traffic will probably not be that much, but we are aiming at promoting the site heavily using social media. This has the typical problem, that IF we get suddenly get picked up by a large tech blog, we will see a sudden burst: A very heavy increase in traffic all of the sudden. If we use a cheap charlie host as our current host is (www.unoeuro.com) or something similar like GoDaddy, I'm afraid that the site will go down under the load. If that happens, then we might as well have thrown our social media marketing dollars out of the window. Our site will be relatively lightweight, all videos hosted at Youtube or Vimeo and other than that mainly just a standard webpage (ie nothing too heavy). I am hoping for recommendations for a good hosting company, which has some form of scalable hosting, so if / when a traffic surge hits, the site will not go down.

Calculus? Need help solving for a time-dependent variable given some other variables.

Long story short, I'm making a platform game. I'm not old enough to have taken Calculus yet, so I know not of derivatives or integrals, but I know of them. The desired behavior is for my character to automagically jump when there is a block to either side of him that is above the one he's standing on; for instance, stairs. This way the player can just hold left / right to climb stairs, instead of having to spam the jump key too. The issue is with the way I've implemented jumping; I've decided to go mario-style, and allow the player to hold 'jump' longer to jump higher. To do so, I have a 'jump' variable which is added to the player's Y velocity. The jump variable increases to a set value when the 'jump' key is pressed, and decreases very quickly once the 'jump' key is released, but decreases less quickly so long as you hold the 'jump' key down, thus providing continuous acceleration up as long as you hold 'jump.' This also makes for a nice, flowing jump, rather than a visually jarring, abrupt acceleration. So, in order to account for variable stair height, I want to be able to calculate exactly what value the 'jump' variable should get in order to jump exactly to the height of the stair; preferably no more, no less, though slightly more is permissible. This way the character can jump up steep or shallow flights of stairs without it looking weird or being slow. There are essentially 5 variables in play: h -the height the character needs to jump to reach the stair top<br> j -the jump acceleration variable<br> v -the vertical velocity of the character<br> p -the vertical position of the character<br> d -initial vertical position of the player minus final position<br> Each timestep:<br> j -= 1.5; //the jump variable's deceleration<br> v -= j; //the jump value's influence on vertical speed<br> v *= 0.95; //friction on the vertical speed<br> v += 1; //gravity<br> p += v; //add the vertical speed to the vertical position<br> v-initial is known to be zero<br> v-final is known to be zero<br> p-initial is known<br> p-final is known<br> d is known to be p-initial minus p-final<br> j-final is known to be zero<br> j-initial is unknown<br> Given all of these facts, how can I make an equation that will solve for j? tl;dr How do I Calculus? How do I make h.264 work on YouTube on Firefox on Windows 7 64 bit?

Various news articles state that Firefox supports h.264 on Windows since version 20. As of this writing the version is 24, yet Firefox still can't play most YouTube videos. I did the HTML5 opt-in and tested both Firefox and Nightly. I also made sure media.windows-media-foundation.enabled in about:config is enabled, and it is by default both on Firefox and Nightly. What's wrong and how do I fix it? Edit: This video works. This video fails. They're both MP4 (right click video - stats for nerds), so Firefox's h.264 support works at least some of the time. Edit: When I go to a YouTube video that doesn't work, click Share - Embed and then copy-paste the src of the iframe tag into the address bar, the video works.

Why many applications close after opening a document or doing a specific actions?

I have some encrypted pdf files that have no problem and in my last windows, I could open them easily with Adobe Reader 9.2 and other pdf readers. But now, I can only open non-encrypted pdf files and one encrypted file with Adobe Reader. every time I open almost any encrypted pdf, it closes itself. Also, when I try to search a folder for a keyword with Foxit Reader, once it closed. This is not related to Adobe Reader, because I have the same problem with Word 2007. When I open a document, sometimes it closes instantly and sometimes it closes after a few seconds and sometimes it is stable. My windows is Fresh. I have installed it a few days ago. Which is the best procedure and digital format to resurrect my old VHS library i a way I can see It on my LCD TV? I have a not so big collection 100 VHS I have plenty of storage I have a network media tank (A110 popcorn Hour but I can also purchase a new media center if needed) I have an old working VCR (but again I can pick a specific one new if you think It's better to save quality) The VHS cassette collection seems to have retained a good quality over the years. Of course I have some computer (either mac and pc) to do the process. Which software do I need/miss? Please give me some advice.

Routing from the DMZ to the interior network only

I have a home network connected to Verizon's FIOS service. Verizon's ActionTec router is connected to the ONT via coax to establish the MOCA network. My DD-WRT router's WAN port is connected to one of the ActionTec's LAN ports. The DD-WRT router is configured with a static IP address and assigned to the DMZ (this is done so I only have to configure port forwarding once). My issue is that this does not allow computers connected to the DD-WRT to serve streaming audio/video to the MOCA network using Verizon's Media Manager. I know that Media Manager uses ports 18001, 5050, and 5060, but I don't know how to forward those ports so that they are only available to the ActionTec's network and not the rest of the internet.

Why does MTP work on one machine, but not another?

I have two Dell computers, a laptop and a desktop. I reinstalled Windows XP home on both, from the same CD. Then I installed Service pack 3 and ran windows update. When I connect my Creative Zen media player to the desktop, the MTP software that is part of XP recognizes it, and I can copy file to and from it using Windows Explorer. But when I connect the same player with the same cable to the laptop, I can see it in Windows Explorer, but none of the folders that are visible via the desktop are available, and I can't copy anything to or from it. How can I get this working on the laptop?

Hi, I'm looking for an MKV meta tag editor, I'm using PLEX Media Server and PLEX Media Center on my iMac to see movies. PLEX is great because it automatically find and name all my movie library with year, director, gender, original title, description, movie poter art, etc. Unfortunately, it saves all the data only on a app DB file without edit any tag on the MKV files. A 20% of the movies needs to be fixed or PLEX needs help to find exactly the movie name, so if I need to move all my library elsewere, I need to do all the tagging work again. So, does exists MKV meta tag editor? Oh I'm a Mac user
