• "Snapping" when in RDP

  I am using mstsc.exe version 6.0 (Remote Desktop non-Metro version) from an XP machine and cannot get Windows 8 snapping to work. I can drag a metro app window to the left or right, but it doesn't stick, it just bounces back to full screen. The snap bars do not appear. The client PC has two monitors, each with a resolution of 1280x1024. While mstsc.exe 6.0 does have an option to use both monitors simultaneously in normal settings, I am launching it with spanning enabled: mstsc.exe /span So the effective resolution in the session is 2560x1024. Is there a trick to getting this to work over RDP?

• Ubuntu Won't Load Up

  I'm having trouble with Ubuntu. It was working fine on Weds 24/08/12. Fired up my laptop yesterday and came up with the Grub screen. What I basically want to know is how do I get back to normal service? I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to Ubuntu/Linux systems. I think I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu. Currently using the 11.10 trial which I burnt to disc to use my laptop at the minute to post this question. This is the first screen I get come up. 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/R1187/20121025_173033.jpg' Following the first option it just takes me to a black screen with a flashing underscore. Pretty sure it doesn't allow me to enter any text. When I follow the second option I get this screen: I've tried following the advice on this question, but it hasn't done the trick. It keeps asking me if it's mounted. Any help will be appreciated. Ideally I'd like to get things back to normal. Failing that copying my data from the hard drive to an external one and reinstalling Ubuntu would be fine.

• Repairing The Visual Studio 2012 UI

  I have sympathy for ‘Softies who don’t like the controversial ‘Metro’ UI changes but are afraid to say so. After all, who wants to commit a CLM (Career-Limiting Move) by declaring that the Emperor has no clothes (or gradients) and that ALL CAPS IN MENUS ARE DUMB? Talk about power! Here’s a higher-up (anyone got a name?) who has enforced a flat, monochrome, uninteresting user interface in Visual Studio 2012  that has been damned with faint praise by consumers. The pushback must have been enormous. Some ‘Softies disengage from the raging debate with, “It’s not my decision” while others feebly point out that the addition of some colour pixels in the icons is a real improvement over the beta version. True, I guess. With the UI pretty much locked, its down to repairing the damage. Fortunately, some Empire dissident has leaked the news to a blogger that  those SHOUTING CAPs aren’t hardcoded afterall: How To Prevent Visual Studio 2012 ALL CAPS Menus And so it goes. By RTM, I’m sure there will be many more add-ons to help us ‘de-Metro’ VS 2012 and recreate our favourite Visual Studio 2010 themes for it.

• Installing 10.10+ with Radeon HD 6970 Video Card

  I built a new PC that has a Diamond Radeon HD 6970 graphics card, and no on-board graphics. When I boot from the Ubuntu disc, it runs through some initial booting stuff, and then gets to a loading screen that just has the Ubuntu logo and some progress bar/dot thingies. After this screen is finished, it goes black and says it cannot display video mode. I've seen many people that say to simply install the ati drivers. However, I don't believe this is an option, because I can't even get to the boot screen that asks me if I want to run the system off of the LiveCD, boot to hard disk, etc... Is there a way to somehow boot to a CLI before getting to the screen that would normally let me choose that? I'm at a loss as far as what to do. Also: Yes, the CD boots fine on other machines. (I've also burnt a couple discs just to be sure) Yes, the graphics card is fine. I normally dual-boot with Windows 7, and it runs on Windows just fine. Thanks for any help!

• Resolution independence - resize on the fly or ship all sizes?

  My game relies heavily on textures of various sizes with some being full-screen. The game is targeted for multiple resolutions. I found that resizing textures (downsizing) works quite well for this game’s art type (it’s not Pixel Art or anything like that). I asked my artist to ensure that all textures at the edges of the screen to be created in such a way that they can safely “overflow” off screen; this means that aspect ratio is not an issue. So with no aspect ratio issues, I figured that I would simply ask my artist to create assets in very high resolution, and then resize them down to the appropriate screen resolution. The question is, when and how do I do that? Do I pre-resize everything to common resolutions in Photoshop and package all assets in the final product (increasing the size download that the user has to deal with) and then select the appropriate asset based on the detected resolution? Or do I ship with the largest set of Textures, detect the resolution on load, set a render target and draw all downsized assets to it and use that? Or for the latter, do I use some sort of a CPU-sided algorithm to resize on game load?

• LWJGL Text Rendering

  Currently in my project I am using LWJGL and the Slick2D library to render text onto the screen. Here is a more specific example: Font f = new Font("Times New Roman",Font.BOLD,18); font = new UnicodeFont(f); font.getEffects().add(new ColorEffect(Color.white)); font.addAsciiGlyphs(); try { font.loadGlyphs(); } catch (SlickException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } then i use font.drawString to write onto the screen. This is a quick easy way but it has a lot of disadvantages. for example font.loadGlyphs take a very long time 1-3 seconds. so when i want to change a color or font type then i have to wait 1-3 seconds which means I cannot do it while rendering (ie. cant have different color text on the same screen). My question is what is a better way of drawing multicolored text onto the screen? I use slick2d only for the text rendering so maybe i can fully get rid of the library and draw text some other way... If you have an answer please leave a quick short example. Thanks!

• 3 or 4 monitors with Nvidia and Ubuntu

  I saw that you are (were?) running 4 monitors with Ubuntu 8.10 and two Nvidia cards (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/27113/how-to-use-3-monitors). I was curious if you were doing this with Xinerama, a hacked up TwinView config, or multiple X screens, or some other method? Does it work with compiz? I intend to run my Dell 30" in the middle with two 1280x1024 on the sides and continue to use one X screen, and run compiz, on Ubuntu 9.04. Currently, I am using 2 monitors with twinview and compiz, which runs fantastic. I just can't get the third monitor running (unless I enable it in its own X screen, and then enable Xinerama to enable windows to be dragged as if all one X screen, but this breaks compiz, and I don't care much for having separate X screen). I am very interested in knowing how you set up 4 monitors with 2 GPU's. Thanks!

  I'm having the issue where the Windows 8 Start Menu shows up on the secondary monitor instead of the primary. When booting the machine the start menu appears originally on the primary screen as it should. Sometime during the course of the day the menu starts appearing on the secondary monitor instead of the primary. • PC won't boot after hanging during Windows 8 automatic repair [closed]

  I've got a custom built PC using an ASUS P5E motherboard and Intel Q6600 CPU. I plugged in my mp3 player to the USB port yesteday, and when I came back to the machine after about an hour or so, the Windows 8 automatic repair message was on the screen. It seemed to stick there for an hour, after which I decided to just hit reset and try and figure out what was going on. However, the machine rebooted to a black screen before even getting to the BIOS, with the monitor lights just blinking indicating there was no signal. Tried powering down completely, waiting a few minutes and then powering back up again with no difference; black screen with monitor lights blinking. Tried leaving it on for a while and then pinging from another machine or accessing it via something like LogMeIn, but everything showed the machine as being offline. There were also no error beeps or anything like that. Also tried unplugging all of the memory and rebooting and that also caused no error beeps. Removed one of the display cards and left the other one in there, and still only a black screen. I'm inclined to think that the motherboard or CPU is fried, but there is no indication of damage on any components and the CPU fan seems to be working fine as it always has, so overheating seems unlikely. It's also plugged into a surge protector. The motherboard also has a green light which still lights up. As everything was still working fine before hitting the reset button during Windows 8 automatic repair screen, at which point everything stopped working, it seems unlikely that this problem is down to component failure. Has anyone else experienced anything like this or have any ideas on what could be causing this behavior?

• Turn on Laptop backlight without a keyboard shortcut

  I recently installed the latest drivers and my screen backlight turned off. The problem is that my Fn-F7 key combination doesn't work, so I can't turn it back on. I can see my screen at night if I hold a source of light next to the screen. So I can still do some trivial things with my laptop. Is there a way to turn the backlight on without using Fn-F7 key combination, either via the command line, or some other way?

• ubuntu 12.10 installation failure

  Here i am asking this question again because someone deemed it a duplicate to another topic which i over looked and NOTHING AT ALL in that topic pertained to my problem. If your going to close a topic believing it is a duplicate at least do somke reasearch into WHY you think its a duplicate and provide a like to a better source. How do i get past this installation username and password issue? I downloaded ubuntu 12.10 directly from Ubuntu.com and created a bootable USB with linuxlive. after loading the boot drive and ubuntu begins, it goes directly from the purple ubuntu startup screen directly to a black DOS like prompt asking for a ubuntu login. this is COMPLETLY before any installation -begins. i need some help with this. FYI : this is what it is saying after it goes to the login area in the DOS (Full black screen) like screen. Ubuntu 12.10 ubuntu tty1 ubuntu login: now i will provide a few images of the problem i am having. and because i DONT HAVE ANY OS on the computer BECAUSE ubuntu WONT go PAST this... i have to snap these pictuires with a cell phone and upload on another PC. these links are in chronological order from time of pressing power button to time i am presented with log in screen : image 1 image 2 can only post 2 links in messages... will post additional links in comments So, again... how do i get past this ? this is entireley before ubuntu is installed on my system. my PC specs... • Error when restarting computer after successful Ubuntu 12.10 installation

  I was having a lot of sudden issues with my computer (slow on start up progressing quickly to not being able to start ...even in safe mode). Worked on several different things. Finally tried formatting hd and then installing Windows 7. Got errors so I said screw it and tried Ubuntu. Downloaded it (via my laptop), burned on DVD, and tried a disc boot on my desktop. Went through the whole installation, said it was successful and progressed to the restart. It stopped at a screen with an error (0x1b5a6) from 'hd0' I don't remember the error code verbatim. Now when I try restarting it I get to the initial page, hit 'enter' on Ubuntu..and it just sits at a blank screen. Eventually it runs through this screen with a bunch of code and then just sits there. I can't type anything and enter does nothing. Some things on the screen are: Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0) I don't know what else to do... Restarting does not work. I have been working on fixing my computer for almost 2 days straight...

• "Serious errors found HF checking the drive for /home" After Moving /home to external HFSplus partition

  I just installed Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" and Ubuntu 11.10 on my MacBook Pro. Using these instructions: tuxation.com/creating-home-partition-mac-linux.html . After changing the location of my home folder to the new location, it gives me the error in the title, and my username no longer appears in the login screen. Using the "Other" option with my username seems to make it try to log in, but the screen quickly flashes between blank and a shell before kicking me back to the login screen without notice. I'm trying to share my home folder between Mac OS X and Ubuntu, using an hfsplus partition (unjournaled) between the two. The home partition seems to mount fine as /home, and I am able to modify it under Ubuntu. Below is the line I've added to fstab: /dev/sda3 /home hfsplus defaults 0 1 I should also note that I changed my account's username and home directory location to match this, though I've double checked that and everything seems in order there... Thank you in advance for any assistance. Edit: It seems that the /etc/passwd file didn't have my new home directory's location in it, so I changed that, and I am now able to log into my account, although I am still not listed in the login screen, and my username in the menu on the top right shows up as "[Invalid UTF-8]"...

  Transport Minister R Ashoka announced Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) services are going to be best in the world soon. BMTC has planned to launch a Mobility Card with which commuters can get rides in BMTC, KSRTC and future Metro Train facilities without buying tickets for each ride. The conductor with have a simple device in which the commuters can swipe their cards to deduct the ticket tarrif for bus or metro rides automatically. This Mobility card can be obtained by paying a fixed amount. This method is time saving and the commuters can be saved from paying the exact change for tickets. Ashoka says the Volvo Vayu Vaira services have internet connectivity and voice announcements of every bus stop names and this has been appreciated by the commuters. With WiFi Connections in Shatabdi Trains soon and Mobility Cards, India is soon to match the services of US Standards.   I just pushed the following to Codeplex: A new MVVM Light project template for Windows 8 Consumer Preview. This template appears in the File, New Project dialog and allows you to create a Metro style app already wired with MVVM Light. An updated Windows 8 installer for MVVM Light. Preconditions: This installs MVVM Light for Windows 8 only. You can install it side-by-side with the standard MVVM Light for Silverlight, WPF and Windows Phone. Where do I get it? You can download the MSI from: http://mvvmlight.codeplex.com/releases/view/85317 What does it do? The installer installs the Windows 8 version of the MVVM Light DLLs, as well as a new project template for an MVVM Light Metro style app, and code snippets. What is missing? Since Windows 8 Developer Preview, I worked on porting the DispatcherHelper class, and it works now. However the EventToCommand behavior is still not available on Windows 8 (because behaviors are not supported on Windows 8 for the moment). Known issues Some testers reported issues with the code snippets installation. Code snippets should appear when you type “mvvm” in your C# code, there is a list of mvvm-prefixed snippets (such as mvvminpc, etc). • Switch vs Polymorphism when dealing with model and view

  I can't figure out a better solution to my problem. I have a view controller that presents a list of elements. Those elements are models that can be an instance of B, C, D, etc and inherit from A. So in that view controller, each item should go to a different screen of the application and pass some data when the user select one of them. The two alternatives that comes to my mind are (please ignore the syntax, it is not a specific language) 1) switch (I know that sucks) //inside the view controller void onClickItem(int index) { A a = items.get(index); switch(a.type) { case b: B b = (B)a; go to screen X; x.v1 = b.v1; // fill X with b data x.v2 = b.v2; case c: go to screen Y; etc... } } 2) polymorphism //inside the view controller void onClickItem(int index) { A a = items.get(index); Screen s = new (a.getDestinationScreen()); //ignore the syntax s.v1 = a.v1; // fill s with information about A s.v2 = a.v2; show(s); } //inside B Class getDestinationScreen(void) { return Class(X); } //inside C Class getDestinationScreen(void) { return Class(Y); } My problem with solution 2 is that since B, C, D, etc are models, they shouldn't know about view related stuff.   Hi programmers! Today come out a little problem. I have an array of coordinates (latitude and longitude) maded in this way: [0] = "45.01234,9.12345" [1] = "46.11111,9.12345" [2] = "47.22222,9.98765" [...] etc In a loop, convert these coordinates in meters (UTM northing / UTM easting) and after that i convert these coords in pixel (X / Y) on screen (the output device is an iphone) to draw a route line on a custom map. [0] = "512335.00000,502333.666666" [...] etc The returning pixel are passed to a method that draw a line on screen (simulating a route calculation). [0] = "20,30" [1] = "21,31" [2] = "25,40" [...] etc As coordinate (lat/lon) are too many, i need to truncate lat/lon array eliminating the values that doesn't fill in the map bound (the visible part of map on screen). Map bounds are 2 couple of coords lat/lon, upper left and lower right. Now, what is the best way to loop on this array (NOT SORTED) and check if a value is or not in bound and after remove the value that is outside? To return a clean array that contains only the coords visible on screen? Note: the coords array is a very big array. 4000/5000 couple of items. This is a method that should be looped every drag or zoom. Anyone have an idea to optimize search and controls in this array? many thanks, A

• How can I validate if a 13.10 update was complete?

  I attempted to upgrade Ubuntu 13.04 server to 13.10 tonight via the standard linux text console and it had some trouble. Machine boots and displays 13.10, but I am unsure exactly what or how much was successfully upgraded. Is there some command I can run which will validate that all system has all standard binaries upgraded to the 13.10 release? As for the issue .... everything seemed to be going along ok until the screen displayed some kind of menu option regarding local edits to samba config file. There was a prompt requesting root password or ctrl-d to continue, but it would not take any input. From another terminal screen I tried killing the process displaying this samba message, and then some screen/SCREEN processes. The hard drive activity picked up for a while and then all the processes on that pty were gone. As I said, reboot was OK, but I have no idea if everything was upgraded. The machine seems to be acting like normal, except that the upgrade killed my openpvn process which I'll need to reload. Thanks

• Run Python Server at Startup

  Hello, I've got a few Python based servers that I need to run, and would like them to start automatically when I start my Ubuntu Server box. What is the best way to execute them like this? I was hoping I could write a Bash script and use Screen to get them running in the background, where I can check on them every now and then, but where as echo screen -d -m python works just fine, echo screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py` doesn't, with no error messages. Is that something to do with the spaces? Even though I did surround it with backquotes? I also tried: WEB="screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py`" echo $WEB As a way of escaping the spaces, but no luck. What's Bash scripting way to do this? And, once the Bash script works, where can I put it to make it execute on startup?
