• Trying to install Canon LBP7750Cdn driver on Ubuntu 12.04

  I'n new to Ubuntu/Linux and had significant difficulties while attempting to configure my printer to work. The automatic driver pairing wizard which Ubuntu uses to identify and install the appropriate drivers did not find my printer's driver. I managed to get it to print when I manually select the generic configuration and checked the PCL6 configuration. However, the printer driver wizard does provide a list of Canon printers and actually do specify my printer as LBP7750C (minus the "dn" at the end, I'm assuming its because duplex ability and networking is not present on all the models - I'm not sure if this could be the source of the problem), but in selecting this option and trying to print I receive this message: Idle - /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed I searched for this similar problem which other users might have encountered, but while there where plenty of such cases, they all had different resolutions and were all related to HP printers. Canon actually do provide a driver for my printer, but it comes with no installation instructions unless you consider yourself an experienced CUPS guru. Seriously. If anyone can help me solve this foomatic-rip failed problem I'd be really grateful - and I'm sure many other folks too. [BTW, can't Canonical fix this type of thing for the next Ubuntu release? - I't seems like a small problem but it causes many problems and countles hours of production time loss.] Thanks in advance.

• Battery is drained too quickly

  I'm getting really low battery life under ubuntu, not even close to windows. I tried powertop, and I saw that my laptop is consuming in idle nearly 20 watts (a bit more). I tried to install laptop-mode-tools, change "good" into "bad" in powertop, but nothing changes. I see that I have the the HD audio output device which is running at 100% every time. Could this be the problem? This is a report from powertop. • Are there plans for handwriting recognition?

  This is a big feature when it comes to putting Ubuntu onto tablets. Currently, Netbook edition works great for that purpose and the pen digitiser is perfect, but the handwriting would be a real dealmaker (especially for my business - we could actually move to Linux) to compete with the Windows one. CellWriter exists, but that only handles character and keyboard input (but I don't know about multitouch on the keyboard). It also needs to handle print and cursive, because character mode can be slow and uncomfortable (unless you're writing passwords). Lastly, CellWriter needs to have some default letter shapes rather than having to be trained from the start. There is a software package called MyScript (by Vision Objects) that handles all four modes (keyboard, character, print, cursive) plus calculator and fullscreen, but it's only free as a trial. Still, it would be nice to see it in the For Purchase section and the trial in the free section of the Software Centre. The only other ones are for Chinese/Japanese/Korean characters. What would really make a difference for us is the integration of some formal API with the OS that can automatically activate when running on a tablet to pass ink data to whatever recognition system is installed, and have something available (however rudimentary) to use it.

  I'm wondering about the differences between inheritance and composition examined with concrete code relevant arguments. In particular my example was Inheritance: class Do: def do(self): self.doA() self.doB() def doA(self): pass def doB(self): pass class MyDo(Do): def doA(self): print("A") def doB(self): print("B") x=MyDo() vs Composition: class Do: def __init__(self, a, b): self.a=a self.b=b def do(self): self.a.do() self.b.do() x=Do(DoA(), DoB()) (Note for composition I'm missing code so it's not actually shorter) Can you name particular advantages of one or the other? I'm think of: composition is useful if you plan to reuse DoA() in another context inheritance seems easier; no additional references/variables/initialization method doA can access internal variable (be it a good or bad thing :) ) inheritance groups logic A and B together; even though you could equally introduce a grouped delegate object inheritance provides a preset class for the users; with composition you'd have to encapsule the initialization in a factory so that the user does have to assemble the logic and the skeleton ... Basically I'd like to examine the implications of inheritance vs composition. I heard often composition is prefered, but I'd like to understand that by example. Of course I can always start with one and refactor later to the other.

• What is the proper response to lousy error message?

  I've just come across (for the 47 millionth time) some code that looks like this: except IOError, e: print "Problems reading file: %s." % filename sys.exit( 1 ) My first reaction is very visceral: the person who coded this is a complete idiot. How hard is it to print error messages to stderr and to include the system error message in the string? I haven't used python in years, and it took me all of 4 minutes to track down the documentation to figure out how to get the error message from the exception object e and the syntax for printing to stderr. My "complete idiot" reaction was slightly lessened since at least a non-zero value is passed to sys.exit, but I still find this code offensive. My prime thought is that the developer who wrote this is a complete novice for whom I have zero respect. Am I over-reacting? Surely there are excuses for all sorts of bad coding practices, but is there anything that can possibly excuse this sort of $#|t? I guess there are two question here: one is a duplicate of What are developer's problems with helpful error messages?, and the other is "am I over-reacting, or is it valid to conclude that the author of the above code is a novice?"

• Whether to separate out methods or not

  I am new to java and want to learn best coding practices and understand why one method is better than another, in terms of efficiency and as the coding becomes more complicated. This is just an example, but I can take the principles from here to apply elsewhere. I have need an option to display stuff, and have put the method stuff separately from the method to ask if the user wants to display the stuff, as stuff has a lot of lines of code.   I don’t know the exact business reason but someone asked how to identify all sales shipping orders with any negative quantities on them.  They needed to print these separately from the shipments that only have all positive quantities. Here is one way to solve this problem In NAV, open Sales Shipment Header Add a field of type Boolean (The field type should match the value you expect to return from the flow field method.  In this case we will use an exist so we expect a bool but we could have used a Sum, Average, Min, Max, Count, or a Lookup to return a value). Define it as a flow field and click on the ellipse next to CalcFormula Now [Has Negative Qty] is false if no negatives exist And [Has Negative Qty] and true if a negative exist So it is ready to be used as a filter on the report. Don’t forget that if you are using it in code, you may need to CalcFields. However, if I wanted to use Dependency Injection for unit testing it would cause a problem because now I can't send the input string to the parser constructor like before as its calculated inside ClientCalss itself: class ClientClass{ private $parser; public __construct(Parser $parser){ $this->parser=$parser; } public function print(){ //some code to calculate $inputString $result= $this->parser->parse(); //--> will throw an exception since no string was provided } } The only solution I found was to modify all my classes that took parameters in their constructors to utilize Setters instead (example: setInputString()). However, I think there might be a better solution than this because sometimes modifying existing classes can cause much harm than benefit. So, Are injectable classes not allowed to have input parameters? If a class must take input parameters in its constructor, what would be the way to inject it properly? UPDATE Just for clarification, the problem happens when in my production code I decide to do this: $clientClass= new ClientClass(new Parser($inputString));//--->I have no way to predict $inputString as it is calculated inside `ClientClass` itself. UPDATE 2 Again for clarification, I'm trying to find a general solution to the problem not for this example code only because some of my classes have 2, 3 or 4 parameters in their constructors not only one.

• Only one user can connect to Ubuntu samba server

  I setup a samba server on 12.04 LTS, and it works great for one user but not the others. I am trying to map a network drive from a windows 7 laptop. I can successfully authenticate with one user, but the other two both get "Access is denied" errors. Here is my smb.conf file. I changed all the users so they are all members of the same groups (all three users are admins anyway). I only ever have one user connected at a time.   Hello...I have been given the horrible task of doing this. Launch the website Take a screenshot Fill in the form details, click on Next Take a screenshot ... ... ... Rinse. Repeat. Now, with various combinations, this comes up to 300 screenshots. And I have to do this for 4 different browsers. Chrome, Firefox, IE 6 and IE 7. I cannot use tools which will capture the screenshot and store them, such as, SnagIT. I need to take a screenshot, copy it to a Word Document and take the second screenshot and take it to a Word Document. I thought, I will write a tiny utility which will help me do this. Here is the requirement spec that I put up for it - An executable which once launched seats itself in the System Tray. While it is active, all instances of Key Press (Print Scrn), it should write the contents to a Word Document as defined (either a default path or a user defined one). Save the document periodically. Now, my question is - if I am going to develop this using C# (Winforms application), how do I go about doing this. I can do a fair bit of C# programming and I am willing to learn. But I am not able to locate the references for how to do a background process so that it runs in the background. And while it runs, it has to capture the Print Scrn command. Can you folks point me to the right material where I can learn this? Theoretical references should suffice. But if there are practical references, then nothing like it. Thanks!

• How do I list all the relation variables and debug them interactively?

  I'm writing a charm that requires a mysql database, I found from looking at other charms that this (below) is how I get the info about the database: user=`relation-get user` password=`relation-get password` mysqlhost=`relation-get private-address` But I just found that from reading the wordpress charm example, is there a way to show all the relation variables that I can use? Also, while debugging my db-relation-changed script, I wanted to ssh into my host and interactively run those commands, for example relation-get user, but it didn't work. I resorted to having to restart everything and use juju log to print them out. This wasted a lot of time. Is there a way to print out these relations, either from my dev box or from the instance running my charm?   I am wondering which is the best way to go with java code. I need to create a class with simple prompts for input.. I have tried using both classes and cannot work out the particular benefits for each.   I have a question that should not be too hard but it has been bugging me for a long time. I am trying to write a function that searches in a directory that has different folders for all files that have the extension jpg and which size is bigger than 0. It then should print the sum of the size of the files that are in these categories. It sums the sizes of the files of one directory but it does not keep suming the rest. For example if I have these paths C:/trial/trial1/trial11/pic.jpg C:/trial/trial1/trial11/pic1.jpg C:/trial/trial1/trial11/pic2.jpg and C:/trial/trial2/trial11/pic.jpg C:/trial/trial2/trial11/pic1.jpg C:/trial/trial2/trial11/pic2.jpg I will get the sum of the first three and the the size of the last 3 but I won´t get the size of the 6 together, if that makes sense.   There is a server that responds to requests on a socket. The client has functions to emit requests and functions to handle responses from the server. The problem is that the request sending function and the response handling function are two unrelated functions. Given a server response X, how can I know whether it's a response to request X or some other request Y? I would like to make a construct that would ensure that response X is definitely the answer to request X and also to make a function requestX() that returns response X and not some other response Y. This question is mostly about the general programming approach and not about any specific language construct. Preferably, though, the answer would involve Ruby, TCP sockets, and PHP. • Why is the remove function not working for hashmaps? [migrated]

  I am working on a simple project that obtains data from an input file, gets what it needs and prints it to a file. I am basically getting word frequency so each key is a string and the value is its frequency in the document. The problem however, is that I need to print out these values to a file in descending order of frequency. After making my hashmap, this is the part of my program that sorts it and writes it to a file. //Hashmap I create Map<String, Integer> map = new ConcurrentHashMap<String, Integer>(); //function to sort hashmap while (map.isEmpty() == false){ for (Entry<String, Integer> entry: map.entrySet()){ if (entry.getValue() > valueMax){ max = entry.getKey(); System.out.println("max: " + max); valueMax = entry.getValue(); System.out.println("value: " + valueMax); } } map.remove(max); out.write(max + "\t" + valueMax + "\n"); System.out.println(max + "\t" + valueMax); } When I run this i get: t 9 t 9 t 9 t 9 t 9 .... so it appears the remove function is not working as it keeps getting the same value. I'm thinking i have an issue with a scope rule or I just don't understand hashmaps very well. If anyone knows of a better way to sort a hashmap and print it, I would welcome a suggestion. thanks
