• Suspend TimerTask until the next execution

  I am using a TimerTask to run some periodic tasks, the task being processing a set of files. I have a requirement where if the number of files to be processed exceeds a pre-determined limit, the thread suspends execution and waits till the next cycle to start processing the files again. Is there a way to suspend the TimerTask until the next execution period or do I have to extend the TimerTask class to achieve this functionality? I saw there is a TimerTask.cancel method, but this will cancel all further executions of this thread. I don't want this to happen. I just want the thread to be suspended until the next execution period. I don't have the luxury of moving to any of the other concurrent classes in Java as our framework uses TimerTask, and I have to stick with it. Any suggestions, pointers or tips are greatly appreciated. thanks, Asha

• Sync video play over network

  Hi, I have made a media player that plays basically anything that's scheduled to it via a text file. The player can also play the exact same clip on multiple machines(PC's). The problem is the syncing. The same video starts playing on each of the machines, but they are out by about 400ms, which looks crap and if there's sound it's even worse. What I do at the moment is: One machine is set up as the master and all other machines are set up as slaves. The master decides what item will be played. It waits for a message from each of the slaves, once all slaves are connected (or after the timeout), it broadcasts the item id of the file that needs to be played. All machines then start playing that file. What I also tried: I thought that the file loading time might be the major driving factor in the sync mismatch, so I chankged the code to do the following. The master still decides what file to play. It waits for the connect message from each slave (or timeout) and transmits the item id of the file to play. All machines start playing that file but pauses it immediately. The master then again waits for a ready message from each of the slaves. As soon as all slaves responded the master sends a play message to all slaves. All machines then continue the file. This unfortunately did not improve the problem. I am now pretty sure the sync mismatch is due to network delay. How can I compensate for this? Or maybe determine the delay to each slave? All network comms are done with winsock. Any thoughts or ideas is much appreciated.

• MySql product\tag query optimisation - please help!

  Hi There I have an sql query i am struggling to optimise. It basically is used to pull back products for a shopping cart. The products each have tags attached using a many to many table product_tag and also i pull back a store name from a separate store table. Im using group_concat to get a list of tags for the display (this is why i have the strange groupby orderby clauses at the bottom) and i need to order by dateadded, showing the latest scheduled product first. Here is the query.... SELECT products.*, stores.name, GROUP_CONCAT(tags.taglabel ORDER BY tags.id ASC SEPARATOR " ") taglist FROM (products) JOIN product_tag ON products.id=product_tag.productid JOIN tags ON tags.id=product_tag.tagid JOIN stores ON products.cid=stores.siteid WHERE dateadded < '2010-05-28 07:55:41' GROUP BY products.id ASC ORDER BY products.dateadded DESC LIMIT 2 Unfortunately even with a small set of data (3 tags and about 12 products) the query is taking 00.0034 seconds to run. Eventually i want to have about 2000 products and 50 tagsin this system (im guessing this will be very slooooow). • Fetching a result twice with deferend name

  I have 1 table with tasks named opentask:columns: id,title,description,expires,creator_id,creator_name, executer_id, executer_name, priority_id, status_id1 table with users named user: with columns: user_id, username What I want is to create a query where there will be all columns from opentask table where the executer_id will be equal to the user_id of user table AND the creator_id will be equal to the user_id again. This creates a confusion because the first equality excludes the second.So I need somehow to create a query where I will include the usernames for the executer with something like where "opentask.executer_id=user_user_id" and at the same time I will include the username again (as a differend name?) for the creator with something like "where opentask.executer_id=user_user_id"So I try this, which of course I know that is missing something, can you help? • What do I do about a Java program that spawned two instaces of itself?

  I have a java JAR file that is triggered by a SQL server job. It's been running successfully for months. The process pulls in a structured flat file to a staging database then pushes that data into an XML file. However yesterday the process was triggered twice at the same time. I can tell from a log file that gets created, it looks like the process ran twice simultaneously. This caused a lot of issues and the XML file that it kicked out was malformed and contained duplicate nodes etc. My question is, is this a known issue with Java JVM's spawning multiple instances of itself? Or should I be looking at sql server as the culprit? I'm looking into 'socket locking' or file locking to prevent multiple instances in the future. This is the first instance of this issue that I've ever heard of. More info: The job is scheduled to run every minute. The job triggers a .bat file that contains the java.exe - jar filename.jar The java program runs, scans a directory for a file and then executes a loop to process if the file if it finds one. After it processes the file it runs another loop that kicks out XML messages. I can provide code samples if that would help. Thank you, Kevin

  Is there a framework which can be used in your application, to make it expose internal objects on some port for inspection. for.e.g. after i start my application in this case a GUI Application, and then say launch http://localhost:9100 then it should show me the statistics of the app. I played a bit with HttpListener accepting connections and then outputting raw HTML, it works fine for simple tasks, but there is too much worked involved if i have make a proper object browser. • Could/Should I use static classes in asp.net/c# for shared data?

  Here's the situation I have: I'm building an online system to be used by school groups. Only one school can log into the system at any one time, and from that school you'll get about 13 users. They then proceed into a educational application in which they have to co-operate to complete tasks, and from a code point of view, sharing variables all over the place. I was thinking, if I set up a static class with static properties that hold the variables that are required to be shared, this could save me having to store/access the variables in/from a database, as long as the static variables are all properly initialized when the application starts and cleaned up at the end. Of course I would also have to put locks on the get and set methods to make the variables thread safe. Something in the back of my mind is telling me this might be a terrible way of going about things, but I'm not sure exactly why, so if people could give me their thoughts for or against using a static class in this situation, I would be quite appreciative.

• Application wide messaging... without singletons?

  So, I want to go for a more Singleton - less design in the future. However, there seem to be a lot of tasks in an application that can't be done in meaningful way without singletons. I call them "application wide services", but they also fall into the same category as the cross cutting concerns, which I usually fix via AOP. Lets take an example: I want an application wide message queue that dispatches messages to components, every component can subscribe and publish there, it's a very nice multicast thing. The message queue and dispatching system are usually a (rather short) singleton class, which is very easy to implement in, say, C#. You can even use double dispatching and utilize message type metadata and the like, it's all so easy to do, it's almost trivial. However, having singletons is not really "object oriented design" (it introduces global variables) and it makes testing harder. Do you have any ideas? I'm asking this question because I'm willing to learn more about this topic, a LOT more. :-)

I am creating a web application using zend, here i create an interface from where user-A can send email to more than one user(s) & it works excellent but it slow the execution time because of which user-A wait too much for the "acknowledged response" ( which will show after the emails have sent. ) In Java there are "Threads" by which we can perform that task (send emails) & it does not slow the rest application. Is there any technique in PHP/Zend just like in Java by which we can divide our tasks which could take much time eg: sending emails. Thanks..

• Adding java source (.java files) to test jar in Maven

  Hi all, I'm making use of my pom.xml and am was able to generate the jar for src/main/java (say app.jar) as well as for src/test/java (say app-test.jar). I was also able to include my java sources as part of the app.jar (i.e. have both my .class as well as my .java files in the jar). However for my app-test.jar, i'm not able to include my .java files in it.   I have a servlet automatically firing up when the app server starts, and in its init(), I'm making another thread: init(){ new FooThread() } in FooThread(), i want to periodically check the status of a DB value, then depending on the value, make a web service call. When these two tasks complete, I want the thread to sleep to wait a certain period then repeat. This cycle would just continue forever. • C# Spawn Multiple Threads for work then wait until all finished

  just want some advice on "best practice" regarding multi-threading tasks. as an example, we have a C# application that upon startup reads data from various "type" table in our database and stores the information in a collection which we pass around the application. this prevents us from hitting the database each time this information is required. at the moment the application is reading data from 10 tables synchronously. i would really like to have the application read from each table in a different thread all running in parallel. the application would wait for all the threads to complete before continuing with the startup of the application. i have looked into BackGroundWorker but just want some advice on accomplishing the above. Does the method sound logical in order to speed up the startup time of our application How can we best handle all the threads keeping in mind that each thread's work is independent of one another, we just need to wait for all the threads to complete before continuing. i look forward to some answers

• Java - Confused by the one class per file rule

  The one class per file rule in Java has me a bit confused. I writing an Android app and trying to implement the accepted answer to this question: Common class for AsyncTask in Android? which calls for an interface definition which class A implements and class B accepts as an argument to its constructor. So I need an A.java and a B.java, but where does the interface go? Does it need a separate java file itself? Do I have to define it inside both A and B? If not how to import it? Also I will have about 10 different AsyncTask classes, but I don't want to bother creating a new file for each one. What would you recommend? Is there a way to put all 10 classes in one file? Or should I create a big if/then block inside the class and pass an argument telling it which of the 10 different tasks I want it to do?

• Firing events in script task

  I've got an SSIS project where I am constructing an SQL command based on some variables. I'm constructing the command in a script task, and want to output the constructed SQL to the 'Execution Results' window. I am trying to do this using a FireInformation line from inside my script as follows: Dts.Events.FireInformation(99, "test", "Make this event appear!", "", 0, true); However, in the script editor when editing ScriptMain.cs, that line is underlined in red, and on mouseover, I get the following message: Error: The best overloaded method match for 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Tasks.ScriptTask.EventsObjectWrapper.FireInformation(int, string, string, string, int, ref bool') has some invalid arguments As a result, my script does not compile and I cannot execute it. Any idea what I'm doing wrong here, or what I need to change to be able to see the values of my variables at this point in the Execution output?

• Is there any way to perform pre-/post-switch commands using TortoiseSVN?

  We need to perform some tasks when switching from one Subversion branch to another using TortoiseSVN. Is there any way to, say, call a batch file before and after the switch? The only thing I can find are pre-/post-update and commit hooks, but none of those get executed when switching between branches. EDIT: I am looking for client-side hooks. TortoiseSVN has client-side hook scripts for pre-/post-update and commit, but nothing (that I can find) for pre-/post-switch. Initially, I thought adding hooks for client-side pre-/post-update would be executed when switching between branches, but this does not seem to be the case.

• UITableView animations for a "lazy" UI design?

  I have a UITableViewController that allows the user to perform editing tasks. Now, once a user has committed his change, the table view doesn't directly change the model and updates the table, rather "informs" the model what the user wants to do. The model in turn updates accordingly and then posts a notification that it has been changed. As far as I've seen, I need to begin/end updates on the tableview and in between change the model to its' final form. My changes though, are asynchronous and cannot guarantee to update the model before 'tableview endupdates' is called. Currently, each time I receive a 'model did change' notificaiton, I reload the entire table. So, how can I really make cell animations (delete/insert) work? Should the model fire a notification for each little change instead of the entire table?

  Hi everyone, I'm wondering if it's realistically possible to learn the iPhone SDK and complete an app by the end of this summer. The app shouldn't be too difficult, it would just interact with my site's API and essentially just fetch, create, and edit resources. I already have a little experience with the SDK (and I'm comfortable with Objective-C), so I'm not completely new to it. Although here I things I don't know how to do and what I'd need to learn: Log in to my site using basic http authentication and store the user's username/password for all future requests Implement a toolbar at the bottom to navigate between different views Fetch and parse xml into list items Do POST/PUT requests to create/edit a resource on my server Are there any good resources available to learn how to do those tasks above? • Best practice for avoiding locks on a heavily read table?

  Hi, I have a big database (~4GB), with 2 large tables (~3M records) having ~180K SELECTs/hour, ~2k UPDATEs/hour and ~1k INSERTs+DELETEs/hour. What would be the best practice to guarantee no locks for the reading tasks while inserting/updating/deleting? I was thinking about using a NOLOCK hint, but there is so much discussed about this (is good, is bad, it depends) that I'm a bit lost. I must say I've tried this in a dev environment and I didn't find any problems, but I don't want to put it on production until I get some feedback... Thank you! Luiggi

• Archiving rows dynamically

  I was wondering what would be the best solution to dynamically archive rows. For instance when a user marks a task as completed, that task needs to be archived yet still accessible. What would be the best practices for achieving this? Should I just leave it all in the same table and leave out completed tasks from the queries? I'm afraid that over time the table will become huge (1,000,000 rows in a year or less). Or should I create another table ie task_archive and query that row whenever data is needed from it? I know similar questions have been asked before but most of them where about archiving thousands of rows simultaneously, I just need to know what would be the best method (and why) to archive 1 row at a time once it's been marked completed

My question is, how (if at all) can Python compliment the skills of a typical C# developer working mainly with MS technologies on a Windows Platform. Some examples of typical C# dev on windows would be (SOA applications, web applications, windows services, automation, xml handling) Surely there must be some scenarios where knowing Python would help you get certain tasks done quicker or more efficiently than using traditional C# / MS technologies. • Modal forms get in the way of processing

  I’m working on an interface in VB6 to interact with a sound editor to automate certain tasks mainly using the editor’s object handles and activating them through SendMessage/PostMessage. In general it works OK, except that the editor has some dialog boxes that open in modal mode and freeze everything on the interface, including the timers. Is there a practical way to get these dialog boxes to open modeless or to interact with them from the interface after they pop up? I tried an MDI form, but it also freezes along with everything else. The only way to override the modal mode of these boxes is to launch an independent applet beforehand to address the dialog boxes with a timer, but the process is somewhat cumbersome. All I need to do with the dialog boxes is click the OK button or hit the return key.
