  I like to keep my Makefiles flexible and multifunctional. One of the tasks I usually add to make command is tar, for example the following instruction does the job: tar: tar -cvf $(PROGNAME).tar $(SRCS) Makefile My question is: How can CMake be used to generate personalized commands like tar? I would like to see some code samples. For the full functionality it would be useful to create project's components and be able to use them as parameters. • How to use the watchdog timer in a RTOS?

  Assume I have a cooperative scheduler in an embedded environment. I have many processes running. I want to utilize the watchdog timer so that I can detect when a process has stopped behaving for any reason and reset the processor. In simpler applications with no RTOS I would always touch the watchdog from the main loop and this was always adequate. However, here, there are many processes that could potentially hang. What is a clean method to touch the watchdog timer periodically while ensuring that each process is in good health? I was thinking that I could provide a callback function to each process so that it could let another function, which oversees all, know it is still alive. The callback would pass a parameter which would be the tasks unique id so the overseer could determine who was calling back.

• Write out to text file using T-SQL

  I am creating a basic data transfer task using TSQL where I am retrieving certain records from one database that are more recent than a given datetime value, and loading them into another database. This will happen periodically throughout the day. It's such a small task that SSIS seems like overkill - I want to just use a scheduled task which runs a .sql file. Where I need guidance is that I need to persist the datetime from the last run of this task, then use this to filter the records next time the task runs. My initial thought is to just store the datetime in a text file, and update (overwrite) it as part of the task each time it runs. I can read the file in without problems using T-SQL, but writing back out has got me stuck. I've seen plenty of examples which make use of a dynamically-built bcp command, which is then executed using xp_cmdshell. Trouble is, security on the server I'm deploying to precludes the use of xp_cmdshell. So, my question is, are there other ways to simply write a datetime value to a file using TSQL, or should I be thinking about a different approach? EDIT: happy to be corrected about SSIS being "overkill"...

Im planing on building a admin Control Panel for my site and i was wondering if there is something out there which i can start working with instead of starting from scratch. • Approaches to a week long camp programming course (tips & projects)

  I will be teaching a week long programming course to kids between the ages of 11-18. Most of the kids have no programming experience. I'm looking for two things 1) General tips for teaching a camp class (how to make it fun when explaining the difference between int and float) 2) Interesting projects that the kids will be able to complete by the end of the week. Unfortunately the language I'll be required to use is either c++ or Java which means that I'll need to spend more time on itty bitty details than I'd like in a week long course. I feel more competent in c++ than in Java. However if someone can show me that Java is much easier to learn I'll probably teach that instead. My initial idea is to try something like "a game a day" with games like hangman, tic-tac-toe, guess-a-number, wheel-of-fortune, etc. I'll try and update the question text as answers come in to offer more details While there are other questions about teaching programming around I'm looking for advice and tasks that are useful for specifically a week long camp

• Avaliable parallel technologies in .Net

  I am new to .Net platform. I did a search and found that there are several ways to do parallel computing in .Net: Parallel task in Task Parallel Library, which is .Net 3.5. PLINQ, .Net 4.0 Asynchounous Programming, .Net 2.0, (async is mainly used to do I/O heavy tasks, F# has a concise syntax supporting this). I list this because in Mono, there seem to be no TPL or PLINQ. Thus if I need to write cross platform parallel programs, I can use async. .Net threads. No version limitation. Could you give some short comments on these or add more methods in this list? Thanks.

  I am extending the System.Net.Mail.MailAddress class to include an ID field, so I created a new custom MailAddress class that inherited from the existing class and a new custom MailAddressCollection class. I then overrode the existing System.Net.Mail.MailMessage.To to use my new collection. I would like to process the recipients in parallel, but I can't get the syntax right. This is the syntax I am using. • Rails: How to have dynamic association

  I'll use an example to explain what behaviour I would like to achieve. If you had a project management app and you added a task, but not all the contributors are users of the app. So when you adding contributors to the task you can enter a user name or email address. Here is the part that I'm finding a little tricky. The task model has many contributors which are linked through the user model, but from this point on I want to achieve 2 things. Store the non members email(this would obviously be quite simple) If that email address was to create an account it would then link that user to the task and remove the temporally saved email. This way, when that user creates an account all the related tasks will already be associated with their email. Is this something that i could achieve with a polymorphic association? or is there something else I should be looking at?

• How can I create a menu in the start menu for my program?

  This may be an easy question but I am not even sure of the terminology to search, so I have to ask. I want my program to have a menu when it is hovered over if it is pinned to the start menu. I am attaching a screenshot where windows powershell illustrates this function, and presents a list of tasks. Other programs sometimes use this to list recently opened files, etc. I am sure this is standard enough that there is a tutorial on it somewhere, would someone mind pointing me to it, or explaining how to do this? I hope that it doesn't matter too much what language is used, but I am proficient in Delphi, C++, and C#.

  I have just started learning programming and I would like to make a script into a chrome extension. Its a basic script and I hope to practice more and more and develop bigger projects and set myself bigger tasks This script has to do the following : reload a page every 20 seconds (say google.com) after 6 months the script must not run (maybe prompt a window saying "its over 6 months") The code should be able to go into a small chrome extension and also the 6 month time period should be absolute not relative to the time the script was started; for example should the browser crash and i have to turn on the extension again it should not restart the 6 month counter. Also if anyone could recommend any good sources for JavaScript to learn (preferably books; nothingIi read online ever seems to stick)

• Bash script to find a directory, list it's contents and sub-folders info

  Hi I want to write a script that will: 1- locate folder "store" on a *nix filesystem 2- move into that folder 3- print list of contents with last modification date 4- calculate sub-folders size This folder's absolute path changes from server to server, but the folder name remains the same always. There is a config file that contains the correct path to that folder though, but it doesn't give absolute bath to it. Sample Config: Account ON DIR-Store /hdd1 Scheduled YES ?According to the config file the absolute path would be "/hdd1/backup/store/" I need the script to grep the "/hdd1" or anything beyond the word "Config-Store", add "/backup/store/" to it, move into folder "store", print list of it's contents, and calculate sub-folders size. Until now I manually edit the script on each server to reflect the path to the "store" folder. • How can I create a profiler GUI in WPF?

  I am looking to create a task profiler in WPF with an UI similar to the one of incredibuild. Eg, timed tasks appear as strips on their respective line. Have a look at: http://baoz.net/wp-content/2009/06/ib1.png to see what I mean. I am unsure what the best way to tackle this problem is? Should I override the Panel class creating a custom layout panel for this or might there be an existing control/library out there that can fit my needs. I have so far had a look at various charting controls but am unsure of weither they can be tweaked to achieve this behaviour or not. I am really hoping for someone who has been using WPF for a while to help me narrow down my search. It is not exactly easy to know what to google for either :)

  When i first started using monotouch i found a page with some code samples for simple and frequent tasks... but on some of those code samples i found some things like this one: var imageRect = new RectangleF(0f, 0f, 320f, 109f); using (var myImage = new UIImageView(imageRect)) { myImage.Image = UIImage.FromFile("myImage.png"); myImage.Opaque = true; view.AddSubview(myImage); } The UIImageView is created inside a using() block. I'm a .Net developer and i know what a using() does, but i dont understand why is it used on this example. So my question is if this is the best way of creating views, and what are the differences (if any) of this aproach and creating views without the using() block.

• How do I get broadcast to work with djcelery+ghettoq

  I am using djcelery 2.1.4 with ghettoq 0.4.5 and django 1.2.3 and I am able to run tasks all day long, but when I try to use any broadcast functionality it fails without errors. Take the simplest case -- I run celeryd: python manage.py celeryd The daemon starts and I try to run a ping: >>> from celery.task.control import ping >>> ping() [] I can see the message that ping created appear in the database, but apparently none of the nodes are picking it up? Am I doing something wrong here? Does broadcast not work with carrot?

  There are some tasks where the obvious language choice is with scripting languages: bash, Python, Ruby, Tcl... however I find it hard to protect a company IP once the product is delivered because the application is never compiled. The client will have complete access to every single line of code. Which one are the choices to protect a product IP when it is best implemented with scripting languages? (switching to a compiled language such as C++ should not be an option) I know that some interpreted languages can be compiled, but there are cases where the process can be inverted

• Delete files in C# that windows does not want me to delete?

  At my company, we are writing a script to take care of simple tasks that we usually would do by hand. I am using c# to delete profiles in c:\documents and settings\, except a few. These will simply be left alone. The problem is that even with code that sets the files to normal and marks the admin user as an owner, they won't delete. They say that the quick launch folder has access denied. I am using a recursive permissions change method and I know that it works. Same thing with file attributes. Why won't it work? How do I fix this?

  what is the right way to setup VisualStuio 2010 for working with *.cl files? I have added *.cl under Tool/Text editor/File extensions and copied usertype.dat into the common7/ide folder, but VS underlines keywords like float4 or cross. Is it necessary to add some key in registry or can somebody propose a tutorial? Thanks in advance. PS i have already asked similar question old one question, but now i am looking explicit for a solution with vs2010. It is not bad, but really nerves and deflects me from programming tasks.

• Nesting arrays into NSDictionary object (Objective-C)

  I would like to define tasks using NSDictionary, which I'd like to save in a plist file (I didn't have much luck with Core Data so far), but got stuck at two points: -- When using initWithObjectsAndKeys: I can change the data type to number or boolean, using NSDate's numberWithInt: and numberWithBool: methods, respectively. I can't seem to find the method to change the type to date though. I couldn't find anything like that in the documentation. -- The second problem I ran into was with the nested arrays.   Say you had the following two constructors: - (id)initWithTitle:(NSString *)title; - (id)initWithTitle:(NSString *)title page:(NSString *)page; The second constructor is no different from the first, except that it sets up the member variable "page". Since it basically has to do the same thing, is there a way to call the first one from the second one to reduce code duplication, or do you have to set up a third method to do the common tasks?   Hi. I've been looking at the various JavaScript UI libraries and am wondering if there's one that can add some styling to page elements. I'm currently adding rounded corners, shadows, borders, and gradients via my own CSS + hacks to get it working on IE. I'm using jQuery for a number of tasks and wondered if there's a plugin that can add these design flairs more easily to DIVs. Not that you want to go overboard with this stuff, but when you need to use it, you'd like to depend on cross-browser and tried-and-tested solutions. Thanks.

• Mesos slave not 'Running' multiple executors simultaneously

  I am using Mesos to distribute a bunch of tasks to different machines (mesos-slaves). Here is what happens: 1. My scheduler gets resource offers and accepts it. 2. Mesos stages multiple executors on the same mesos-slaves (each slave has 4 cpus) 3. Only ONE executor enters the 'Running' state on each of the slaves while the others are shown in 'Staging' state. 4. Only after the current executor finishes execution the other executor starts running. Given that I have 4 CPUs on each machine, shouldn't each slave be running 4 executors simultaneously? Each executor requires 1 CPU.

• Subscribe to the 'complete' event of a .load() on a specific DOM element?

  Hi all, I already use both .live() and .bind('ajaxComplete') to accomplish certain related tasks, but I have found myself wanting to be able to listen for the 'complete' event of a specific DOM element which will call jQuery's .load() at various times. In this situation I don't want to listen for ALL complete events globally (unless someone can show me how to get the proper target from the event object returned by 'ajaxComplete'). I would like to be able to do something like this: $('.selector').load('url.php',{data:data},function(){ ... }); and then somewhere else, attach a handler to listen and execute some other code whenever that ajax call fires and completes: $('.selector').bind('complete',function(){ ... }); is there any way to do this? or must i always make use of the 'complete' event within the context of the load() method?

• linux process scheduling delayed for long time

  I have done strace on my multi-threaded c++ application running on linux after couple hours of running, none of the threads got run, for about 12 seconds. I have seen that the unfinished select system call which is called with a timeout was unfinished before the thread was suspended, reported after it resumed that, it took 11.x seconds for the operation to finish. This is clear indication that the process got starved for a long time. All threads in the process are created with default scheduling policy(SCHED_OTHER) of linux and default priority. There are another 5 similar apps running on the same box which are also heavy I/O bound like this app due to heavy data received on the socket. But most of the time, this app is getting scheduled delay. The other apps are created with same sched policy and priority as this i.e. the defaults. why is only this process gets blocked almost all of the time? Could it be because this process is more I/O intensive as in more busy due to may be higher rates of data? So, the linux dynamic priority adjusting in play here which pushed this process down?
