• Unity very slow while Gnome Classic running just fine

  I see tons of people complaining about Unity speed and I think the problem is not with the video drivers. When I login to Gnome Classic the system is behaving just fine, but when on Unity I can barely do use it: windows are moved hard, terminal is damn slow. Is there any solution or bug that I should track? • SQL SERVER – Number-Crunching with SQL Server – Exceed the Functionality of Excel

  Imagine this. Your users have developed an Excel spreadsheet that extracts data from your SQL Server database, manipulates that data through the use of Excel formulas and, possibly, some VBA code which is then used to calculate P&L, hedging requirements or even risk numbers. Management comes to you and tells you that they need to get rid of the spreadsheet and that the results of the spreadsheet calculations need to be persisted on the database. SQL Server has a very small set of functions for analyzing data. Excel has hundreds of functions for analyzing data, with many of them focused on specific financial and statistical calculations. Is it even remotely possible that you can use SQL Server to replace the complex calculations being done in a spreadsheet? Westclintech has developed a library of functions that match or exceed the functionality of Excel’s functions and contains many functions that are not available in EXCEL. Their XLeratorDB library of functions contains over 700 functions that can be incorporated into T-SQL statements. XLeratorDB takes advantage of the SQL CLR architecture introduced in SQL Server 2005. SQL CLR permits managed code to be compiled into the database and run alongside built-in SQL Server functions like COUNT or SUM. The Westclintech developers have taken advantage of this architecture to bring robust analytical functions to the database. In our hypothetical spreadsheet, let’s assume that our users are using the YIELD function and that the data are extracted from a table in our database called BONDS. Here’s what the spreadsheet might look like. We go to column G and see that it contains the following formula. Obviously, SQL Server does not offer a native YIELD function. However, with XLeratorDB we can replicate this calculation in SQL Server with the following statement: SELECT *, wct.YIELD(CAST(GETDATE() AS date),Maturity,Rate,Price,100,Frequency,Basis) AS YIELD FROM BONDS This produces the following result. This illustrates one of the best features about XLeratorDB; it is so easy to use. Since I knew that the spreadsheet was using the YIELD function I could use the same function with the same calling structure to do the calculation in SQL Server. I didn’t need to know anything at all about the mechanics of calculating the yield on a bond. It was pretty close to cut and paste. In fact, that’s one way to construct the SQL. Just copy the function call from the cell in the spreadsheet and paste it into SMS and change the cell references to column names. I built the SQL for this query by starting with this. SELECT * ,YIELD(TODAY(),B2,C2,D2,100,E2,F2) FROM BONDS I then changed the cell references to column names. SELECT * --,YIELD(TODAY(),B2,C2,D2,100,E2,F2) ,YIELD(TODAY(),Maturity,Rate,Price,100,Frequency,Basis) FROM BONDS Finally, I replicated the TODAY() function using GETDATE() and added the schema name to the function name. SELECT * --,YIELD(TODAY(),B2,C2,D2,100,E2,F2) --,YIELD(TODAY(),Maturity,Rate,Price,100,Frequency,Basis) ,wct.YIELD(GETDATE(),Maturity,Rate,Price,100,Frequency,Basis) FROM BONDS Then I am able to execute the statement returning the results seen above. The XLeratorDB libraries are heavy on financial, statistical, and mathematical functions. Where there is an analog to an Excel function, the XLeratorDB function uses the same naming conventions and calling structure as the Excel function, but there are also hundreds of additional functions for SQL Server that are not found in Excel. You can find the functions by opening Object Explorer in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and expanding the Programmability folder under the database where the functions have been installed. The  Functions folder expands to show 3 sub-folders: Table-valued Functions; Scalar-valued functions, Aggregate Functions, and System Functions. You can expand any of the first three folders to see the XLeratorDB functions. Since the wct.YIELD function is a scalar function, we will open the Scalar-valued Functions folder, scroll down to the wct.YIELD function and and click the plus sign (+) to display the input parameters. The functions are also Intellisense-enabled, with the input parameters displayed directly in the query tab. The Westclintech website contains documentation for all the functions including examples that can be copied directly into a query window and executed. There are also more one hundred articles on the site which go into more detail about how some of the functions work and demonstrate some of the extensive business processes that can be done in SQL Server using XLeratorDB functions and some T-SQL. XLeratorDB is organized into libraries: finance, statistics; math; strings; engineering; and financial options. There is also a windowing library for SQL Server 2005, 2008, and 2012 which provides functions for calculating things like running and moving averages (which were introduced in SQL Server 2012), FIFO inventory calculations, financial ratios and more, without having to use triangular joins. • July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 26 (sys.dm_db_log_space_usage)

  The sys.dm_db_log_space_usage DMV is a new DMV for SQL Server 2012. It returns Total Size, Used Size, and Used Percent size for a transaction log file of a given database. To illustrate this DMV, I will query the DMV against my AdventureWorks2012 database. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_db_log_space_usage As mentioned above, the result set gives us the total size of the transaction log in bytes, the used size of the log in bytes, and the percent of the log that has been used. This is a very simplistic DMV but returns valuable information. Being able to detect when a transaction log is close to being full is always a valuable thing to alert on, and this DMV just provided an additional method for acquiring the necessary information. • Using Visual Studio as a Task-Focused IDE

  Are there patterns or libraries or any official Microsoft SDK for using Visual Studio as a specifically Task-Focused UI? For example, both Revolution R (IDE for the R language) and SQL 2012 (and I think SQL 2008 and possibly 2005) use Visual Studio as the underlying IDE framework. Is there an officially supported SDK and/or examples/samples for doing this type of thing? I am building a language Parser for an existing language - whose only available IDE is INSANELY expensive - using Irony (and eventually will generate a Language Service as well). Any direct or indirect suggestions/answers are appreciated.

• New Replication, Optimizer and High Availability features in MySQL 5.6.5!

  As the Product Manager for the MySQL database it is always great to announce when the MySQL Engineering team delivers another great product release.  As a field DBA and developer it is even better when that release contains improvements and innovation that I know will help those currently using MySQL for apps that range from modest intranet sites to the most highly trafficked web sites on the web.  That said, it is my pleasure to take my hat off to MySQL Engineering for today's release of the MySQL 5.6.5 Development Milestone Release ("DMR"). The new highlighted features in MySQL 5.6.5 are discussed here: New Self-Healing Replication ClustersThe 5.6.5 DMR improves MySQL Replication by adding Global Transaction Ids and automated utilities for self-healing Replication clusters.  Prior to 5.6.5 this has been somewhat of a pain point for MySQL users with most developing custom solutions or looking to costly, complex third-party solutions for these capabilities.  With 5.6.5 these shackles are all but removed by a solution that is included with the GPL version of the database and supporting GPL tools.  You can learn all about the details of the great, problem solving Replication features in MySQL 5.6 in Mat Keep's Developer Zone article.  New Replication Administration and Failover UtilitiesAs mentioned above, the new Replication features, Global Transaction Ids specifically, are now supported by a set of automated GPL utilities that leverage the new GTIDs to provide administration and manual or auto failover to the most up to date slave (that is the default, but user configurable if needed) in the event of a master failure. The new utilities, along with links to Engineering related blogs, are discussed in detail in the DevZone Article noted above. Better Query Optimization and ThroughputThe MySQL Optimizer team continues to amaze with the latest round of improvements in 5.6.5. Along with much refactoring of the legacy code base, the Optimizer team has improved complex query optimization and throughput by adding these functional improvements: Subquery Optimizations - Subqueries are now included in the Optimizer path for runtime optimization.  Better throughput of nested queries enables application developers to simplify and consolidate multiple queries and result sets into a single unit or work. Optimizer now uses CURRENT_TIMESTAMP as default for DATETIME columns - For simplification, this eliminates the need for application developers to assign this value when a column of this type is blank by default. Optimizations for Range based queries - Optimizer now uses ready statistics vs Index based scans for queries with multiple range values. Optimizations for queries using filesort and ORDER BY.  Optimization criteria/decision on execution method is done now at optimization vs parsing stage. Print EXPLAIN in JSON format for hierarchical readability and Enterprise tool consumption. • SQLCMD Mode: give it one more chance

Choose me. - asked one forgotten feature when some bored DBA was purposelessly wondering through the Management Studio menu at the end of her long and busy working day. - Why would I use you? I have heard of no one who does. What are you for? - perplexedly wondered aged and wise DBA. At least that DBA thought she was aged and wise though each day tried to prove to her that she wasn't. - I know you. You are quite lazy. Why would you do additional clicks to move from window to window? From Tool to tool ? This is irritating, isn't it? I can run windows system commands, sql statements and much more from the same script, from the same query window! - I have all my tools that I‘m used to, I have Management Studio, Cmd, Powershell. They can do anything for me. I don’t need additional tools. - I promise you, you will like me. – the thing continued to whine . - All right, show me. – she gave up. It’s always this way, she thought sadly, - easier to agree than to explain why you don’t want. - Enable me and then think about anything that you always couldn’t do through the management studio and had to use other tools. - Ok. Google for me the list of greatest features of SQL SERVER 2012. - Well... I’m not sure... Think about something else. - Ok, here is something easy for you. I want to check if file folder exists or if file is there. Though, I can easily do this using xp_cmdshell … - This is easy for me. – rejoiced the feature. By the way, having the items of the menu talking to you usually means you should stop working and go home. Or drink coffee. Or both. Well, aged and wise dba wasn’t thinking about the weirdness of the situation at that moment. - After enabling me, – said unfairly forgotten feature (it was thinking of itself in such manner) – after enabling me you can use all command line commands in the same management studio query window by adding two exclamation marks !! at the beginning of the script line to denote that you want to use cmd command: -Just keep in mind that when using this feature, you are actually running the commands ON YOUR computer and not on SQL server that query window is connected to. This is main difference from using xp_cmdshell which is executing commands on sql server itself. Bottomline, use UNC path instead of local path. - Look, there are much more than that. - The SQLCMD feature was getting exited.- You can get IP of your servers, create, rename and drop folders. You can see the contents of any file anywhere and even start different tools from the same query window: Not so aged and wise DBA was getting interested: - I also want to run different scripts on different servers without changing connection of the query window. - Sure, sure! Another great feature that CMDmode is providing us with and giving more power to querying. Use “:” to use additional features, like :connect that allows you to change connection: - Now imagine, you have one script where you have all your changes, like creating staging table on the DWH staging server, adding fact table to DWH itself and updating stored procedures in the server where reporting database is located. - Now, give me more challenges! - Script out a list of stored procedures into the text files. - You can do it easily by using command :out which will write the query results into the specified text file. The output can be the code of the stored procedure or any data. Actually this is the same as changing the query output into the file instead of the grid. - Now, take all of the scripts and run all of them, one by one, on the different server.  - Easily - Come on... I’m sure that you can not... -Why not? Naturally, I can do it using :r commant which is opening a script and executing it. Look, I can also use :setvar command to define an environment variable in SQLCMD mode. Just note that you have to leave the empty string between :r commands, otherwise it’s not working although I have no idea why. - Wow.- She was really impressed. - Ok, I’ll go to try all those… -Wait, wait! I know how to google the SQL SERVER features for you! This example will open chrome explorer with search results for the “SQL server 2012 top features” ( change the path to suit your PC): “Well, this can be probably useful stuff, maybe this feature is really unfairly forgotten”, thought the DBA while going through the dark empty parking lot to her lonely car. “As someone really wise once said: “It is what we think we know that keeps us from learning. Learn, unlearn and relearn”.

• Sword and Sworcery - seg fault

  I've just bought, installed Sword and Sworcery via the Software Centre. When I run it, the screen goes black, the cursor changes and then all reverts back to normal. I found the executable that matches the menu item. /bin/sh /opt/swordandsworcery/run.sh When I run it from the console: Segmentation fault (core dumped) My setup: Linux jem-doxie 3.2.0-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 21 16:52:17 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Where to from here? • Problem with Python3 picking Python2 package

  I installed python3-numpy package, but trying to import it in Python3 interpreter I get this: $ python3 Python 3.2.3 (default, May 3 2012, 15:54:42) [GCC 4.6.3] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import numpy Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> File "/home/zetah/.local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/numpy/__init__.py", line 128, in <module> from version import git_revision as __git_revision__ ImportError: No module named version >>> Looking in Synaptic I see python3-numpy is installed in /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/numpy/ Why is it picking wrong package and what can I do to remedy this? Update: OK, in my ~/.profile I have this line: PYTHONPATH=$PYTHONPATH:$HOME/.local/lib/python2.7/site-packages but if I remove this line then my Python 2.7 local packages (which I build from source) wont work Update 2: Everything seems to work perfect without $PYTHONPATH. • question about 12.10 32 bit syslinux 4.06 EDD 2012-10-23 usb direct boot

  alright so guys i am trying to do a direct boot for Ubuntu 12.10 (as stated in the topic) i have been trying to do a direct boot for about ten minutes now. so i have to do a direct boot because my original OS has a corrupted kernel (i am trying to fix a friends laptop) Toshiba satellite C655D-S5518 anyway getting back to the main point when i put the usb in everything starts up fine it loads the usb then it goes to this screen saying "SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 2012-10-23 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 H. Peter Anvin et al." also getting a blinking line (as if i could put something in however when i try to type it does not show up so im guessing its telling me it is loading) However i am not getting a corrupted file or any kind of file error so im guessing my main question is, is this normal? and if so how long does it take for this to be done and what are the steps proceeding this? sorry guys if this is a dumb question i am new to the Ubuntu party haha thanks Logan.

• Why is there a large discrepancy between the stackoverflow tag frequency and the TIOBE Index?

  By recently looking at the TIOBE Programming Community Index (Sep 2012) I noticed the following order: C Java Objective-C C++ C# PHP When looking at the tag frequencies of stackoverflow however, the situation is as follows: C# Java PHP JS Android jquery (JS) iphone (Objective-C) C++ (Java takes the lead when accounting for Android tagged posts w/o a Java tag). JavaScript also likely has surpassed PHP in total numbers of programmers? I realize the tag-frequencies may not be the best indicator, but it is likely a sufficient measure nonetheless. What am I missing that explains this discrepancy, especially for ANSI C?

• Pulseaudio no sound card detected. Dummy output only

  I'm using 12.10 Quantal with Openbox and a .xinitrc script at login instead of a display manager. Its a relatively fresh install and I noticed when I opened pavucontrol the only output was a dummy one. I check around and it appears that my soundcard is physically installed but Pulseaudio isn't detecting it. I'm really unsure what I should do but any help getting my audio back would be appreciated.
