• Why can't I install Java?

  I've been searching high and low for someone who can help me. I've been trying for a month. A month. to install Java on my new PC to no avail. No tech support forum can seem to help me. It all started while playing tekkit one day. I kept running out of memory (using the 32-bit JRE 7 u45) so I decided to install the 64-bit version. I uninstalled the 32-bit version first, for some reason, and downloaded the 64 bit runtime. In the installer, I go through all the normal screens until the installation progress bar appears. Then, it just sits there. No progress is made. No CPU is used by the installer, or any of its dependencies. The installer will stay like this for hours, days, and in one case a whole week without doing anything at all. I've tried installing older versions, the 32-bit version, even Java 6 and none of them will install. UAC is disabled, I've run regedit, CCleaner, and any other "fix-it" program there is. It's getting to the point where I may just have to wipe my hard drives and start over. I have several applications that require java, so this is an absolute necessity. Please, please, someone have the answer. Here are my system specs: -Intel i7-3770k -AsRock z77 Extreme3 -Samsung 840 pro SSD -WD Caviar Black 1tb

• iis7 large worker process request queue creating process blocking aspnet.config & machine.config amended (bottleneck)

  ASP.net 2.0 app .net 2.0 framework IIS7 I am seeing a large queue of "requests" appear under the "worker process" option. State recorded appear to be Authenticate Request and Execute Request Handles more than anything else. I have amended aspnet.config in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727 (32 bit path and 64 bit path) to include: maxConcurrentRequestsPerCPU="50000" maxConcurrentThreadsPerCPU="0" requestQueueLimit="50000" I have amended machine.config in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\CONFIG (32 bit and 64 bit path) to include: autoConfig="true" maxIoThreads="100" maxWorkerThreads="100" minIoThreads="50" minWorkerThreads="50" minFreeThreads="176" minLocalRequestFreeThreads="152" Still i get the issue. The issue manifestes itself as a large number of processes in the Worker Process queue. Number of current connections to the website display 500 when this issue occurs. I dont think i have seen concurrent connections over 500 without this issue occurring. Web application slows as the request block. Refreshing the app pool resolves for a while (as expected) as the load is spread between the two pools. Application pool in question FIXED REQUEST have been set to refresh on 50000. Thank you for any help. Scott quick edit to say hmm, my develeopers are telling me the project was built with .net 3.5 framework. Looking at C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v3.5 there does not appear to be a ASPNET.CONFIG or a MACHINE.CONFIG .... is there a 3.5 equivalent ? after a little searching apparenetly 3.5 uses the 2.0 framework files that 3.5 is missing. So back to the original question , where is my bottleneck ?

• Free web-based software for team collaboration/documentation

  Looking for some advice here, as my search has turned up to be pretty fruitless. My group (9 people - SAs, programmers, and two network guys) is looking for some sort of web tool to... ahem... "facilitate increased collaboration" (we didn't use a buzzword generator, I swear). At the moment, we have an unified ticketing system that's braindead, but is here to stay for political/logistical reasons. We've got 2 wikis ("old" and "new"), neither of which fulfill our needs, and are therefore not used very often. We're looking for a free (as in both cost and open source) web-based tool. Management side: Wants to be able to track project status, who's doing what, whether deadlines are being met, etc. Doesn't want full-fledged "project management" app, just something where we can update "yeah this was done" or "waiting for Bob to configure the widgets". TeamBox (www.teambox.com) was suggested, but it seems almost too gimmicky, and doesn't meet any of the other requirements: Non-management side: - flexible, powerful wiki for all documentation (i.e. includes good tables, easy markup, syntax highlighting, etc.) - good full text search of everything (i.e. type in a hostname and get every instance anyone ever uttered that name) - task lists or ToDo lists, hopefully about to be grouped into a number of "projects" - file uploads - RSS or Atom feeds, email alerts of updates We're open to doing some customizations (adding some features, notification/feeds, searching, SVN integration, etc.) but need something F/OSS that will run under Apache. My conundrum is that most of the choices I've found so far fall into one of these categories: project management/task tracking with poor wiki/documentation/knowledge base support wiki with no task tracking support ticketing system with everything else bolted on (we already have one that we're stuck with) code-centric application (we do little "development", mostly SA work) Any suggestions? Or, lacking that, any comments on which software would be easiest to add the lacking features to (hopefully ending up with something that actually looks good and works well)?

• Lotus Domino - DAOS not reducing file size?

  I have implemented DAOS on a Lotus Domino Server (8.5.3 FP2) as follows: Lotus Domino Server Document: Store file attachments in DAOS: Enabled Minimum size of object before Domino will store in DAOS: 64000 bytes DAOS base path: E:\DAOS Defer object deletion for: 30 days Transaction logging is running, and the specific test database has the following advanced properties set: Domino Attachment and Object Service (ticked) Use LZ1 compression for atachments Compress Database Design Compress Data I have restarted the server. When I run a compact -c, it compacts the database, but does not reduce the size. I have checked the DB in Windows Explorer (60Gb) and the size is the same pre and post. I have checked the directory (E:\DAOS) and it is 35Gb in size. When I run the command 'Tell DAOSMgr Status tmp\test.nsf', I get the following response. From looking up on the net, I believe ticket count = 0 means that the db is not really DAOS'ed? Admin Process: Searching Administration Requests database DAOSMGR: Status tmptest.nsf started DAOS database status: Database: E:\Lotus\Domino\Data\tmp\test.nsf Database state = Synchronized Last resynchronized: 03/09/2012 02:49:13 PM Ticket count: 0 DAOSMGR: Status tmp\test.nsf completed I have run fixup on the database. When I have tried to run the DAOS estimator it has always crashed. This was a problem with larger databases on earlier versions of domino, but not anymore. Can anyone tell me why the size has not reduced? Am I missing anything?

• Script to unstick VNC keys?

  I've run into dropped key events when connecting via VNC clients, leading to a "stuck key" (usually a meta key like CTRL or ALT) and searching around the common answer on how to solve it is often "press and release each meta key individually until the problem resolves". However, I've found this to be annoying and time consuming to try and solve it this way. Plus on a bad connection, it sometimes will miss the "key up" event for the meta key again, and still keep the key stuck. So I'm looking for an automated way to do this: From a script on the client side or the server side, is there a way to trigger "key up" events for all the meta keys (CTRL, ALT, SHIFT, and WIN/CMD, both Left and Right versions)? Or just a command to release all keys the server thinks are down at the moment? Or some scripted way to at least list which keys the server end thinks are down so I know which key to keep pressing and releasing to try and release it? I've got a Mac on the server end, so a Mac/Linux solution would be needed for my situation.

  Here it goes. My friend saved by his works into my flash drive which was detectable/openable but ... The very next day, the drive wouldn't show up in My Computer and Windows gave him error code 43 (Unknown device). I been searching for the next few hours to find a solution as the works inside is important to him. I know he should back up his files but let's not go there. So .... I tried others few systems that once detected his flash drive but the problem still persisted. I don't know whether or not his flash drive is damaged but when plug/un-plugging, there are still sounds coming out though. Tried solutions: [On Vista Home Premium/HIS COME]Uninstalled -- Restarted com -- Re-installed (ERROR 43) [Windows 7/MY COM] Uninstalled --- Restarted com --- Can't install (ERROR 43) It seems that my com (Windows 7) had the lastest drivers already but still can't detect it. Its a Kingston DataTraveller 101 (DT101) 8GB. Could unplugging the flash drive without clicking "Safely Remove Hardware" is the problem? Kindly provide some help. Thank you all.

• Using a Linksys Wireless- G Broadband Router for a Wireless Antenna/Adapter?

  (Warning: I'm not too computer-smart). Just moved fm a home where I used ATT DSL to a home w/ Comcast Cable for internet. Old home had the DSL ethernet wired to my only desktop w/ a 2Wire router for my wireless signal for the laptops. In the new home the signal comes fm cable via a Netgear(300) wireless router (remotely located) & works fine for my laptops. After searching with the network software, my desktop (can't be ethernet wired cuz of location) detects no wireless signal. Desktop is a 2 yr old HP p6311f Pavilion (Windows 7). Can't seem to detect any wireless hardware (ant/adaptr). Maybe I don't have the ability & need to buy a USB wireless antenna? Would the Pavilion come w/ wireless capability out of the box, maybe something inside the tower? No antenna on back. I happen to have a Linksys Wireless router which I plugged in to the desktop (trying both internet & shared ports) & noticed signal action on the router front panel. No internet on desktop though. Can I use this as an antenna for the desktop? Thanks & sorry if my solution is an easy one I'm just missing. Just want internet on the desktop.

• Handle Sysinternals software does not accept -c parameter

  I am trying to close a handle to a locked file in Windows, using Sysinternals Handle software (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896655). First I search for opened handle: handle.exe "C:\Temp" It issues me the following: Far.exe pid: 1144 type: File 2E8: C:\Temp Far.exe pid: 1144 type: File 3A8: C:\Temp Next I run handle.exe with -c parameter. However, whichever number I enter, it does not do anything. I have tried both: 1144, 2E8, 3A8 and 1144 in hex (478) as the software help says it accepts PID in hexademic. Whatever I enter, it just issues the following: Handle v3.46 Copyright (C) 1997-2011 Mark Russinovich Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com usage: handle [[-a [-l]] [-u] | [-c <handle> [-y]] | [-s]] [-p <process>|<pid>] [name] -a Dump all handle information. -l Just show pagefile-backed section handles. -c Closes the specified handle (interpreted as a hexadecimal number). • How much memory will a Windows file-server be able to use effectively.

  In the near future we will be moving our fileserver to a newer box that will be running Windows 2008R2. I want to know how much memory Windows will be able to use for a system that is just a file-server. In searching around I found an old document for Windows 2000 that mentions the maximum size of the file-system cache is 960MB. I suspect this limit no longer applies, but is there a new limit? The file server will be just a standard Windows fileserver. It will have 1TB of attached storage. The large majority of the of the files accessed during the day are just typical Office documents. There are 80-100 people usually using the fileserver during a typical day. This system will only be used as a file server, it doesn't have any other roles. In Windows 2008r2 is there any hard limits for the filesystem cache? What are they? The server we will be re-using for this purpose currently has 4GB of memory, but it can be maxed out at 16GB. Is there any value in doing this for a Windows file-server? Are there any performance counters can I look at on the existing 2003 fileserver that will tell me if adding more memory will be worthwhile.

• Page pool memory

  I'm currently using Windows XP SP3 32 bit, using C2D E6320 with 2GB RAM. When I am playing Starcraft 2, I encounter an error where it says my system is running low on page pool memory. Starcraft graphic settings suggested a high settings for me. I do not think it has to do with my GC but with my RAM. I then made a search to try to rectify the problem. Apparently, it's something to do with my virtual memory. I then proceed to try to the suggested solution which is to temper the registry and limit the page pool memory to 384MB. However, having done so, I still could not achieved it. I've seen screenshot settings of windows XP with 2GB having 384MB of page pool memory. My default settings puts it at 195MB whereas when I try to increase the pool limit, it can only go to a max of 229MB. I tried increasing my RAM capacity to 3GB but the pool limit still remains. I like to know how to increase my page pool memory. I've tried searching for solution but to no avail other than the one that I've mentioned above (which didn't solve my problem completely).

• Refresh file access time under Linux / Discard disk read cache

  I am making use of the access time to analyse some build process, but it is not working the way I want: the access time is updated the first time I read the file, then it stays the same for a long while, or until the next reboot. For instance: $ ll -u some_file -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.3M 2010-04-07 10:03 some_file $ grep abcdef some_file $ ll -u some_file -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.3M 2010-04-07 11:24 some_file # The access time is updated # waiting a few minutes... $ grep abcdef some_file $ ll -u some_file -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.3M 2010-04-07 11:24 some_file # The access time has not been updated :( I suppose that the file is buffered by Linux in the free memory, the only this copy is accessed the subsequent times for speed reasons. A solution would be to discard the buffers in memory. After searching some forums, I found: sync echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches But it is not working, it seems that it only sync up the write buffers, not the read ones. May be it is due to some custom kernel configuration on my distro (fedora 9)? Or I am missing something here? Is there a way to achieve this access time refresh? Note also that I do not want to simulate some writes on my entire file tree. Because I am using some makefile based build system, this will cause the entire project to be build again.

• Authenticated User Impersonation in Classic ASP under IIS7

  I've recently moved one of our servers from Server 2003 and IIS6 to Server 2008 R2 and IIS7 (technically IIS7.5 I suppose). In doing so I am transitioning a small account management tool written in classic ASP and have run into a problem with user impersonation. Extensive searching hasn't been much help so far. Under IIS6, the site was configured to impersonate the logged-in user. Thus, if a domain admin logged in, he was able to run commands to create user directories, adjust permissions, etc. Using Procmon you can see the processes executing as that user. This worked fine. However, with the same code under IIS7, I am unable to get this behavior. I have enabled Basic Authentication, disabled Anonymous Auth, enabled impersonation and have changed the app pool to classic instead of integrated pipelining. Everything seems to be configured correctly, however, all the processes launched by the classic ASP site continue to run as the default AppPool identity and not the logged-in user. If it matters, programs are being launched with code such as: set Wsh = Server.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Wsh.Run("cmd.exe /C mkdir D:\users\foo") Monitoring via Procmon shows cmd.exe being run as either "Classic .NET AppPool" or "DefaultAppPool" depending on the pipeline mode. Any suggestions on how to get the classic ASP site to impersonate and execute as the authenticated user would be great. Thanks!

• Compiling Gearman PHP Library for CentOS 5.8

  I've been trying to get Gearman compiled on CentOS 5.8 all afternoon. Unfortunately I am restricted to this version of CentOS by my CTO and how he has our entire network configured. I think it's simply because we don't have enough resources to upgrade our network... But anyways, the problem at hand. I have searched through Server Fault, Stack Overflow, Google, and am unable to locate a working solution. What I have below is stuff I have pieced together from my searching. Searches have told said to install the following via yum: yum -y install --enablerepo=remi boost141-devel libgearman-devel e2fsprogs-devel e2fsprogs gcc44 gcc-c++ To get the Boost headers working correctly I did this: cp -f /usr/lib/boost141/* /usr/lib/ cp -f /usr/lib64/boost141/* /usr/lib64/ rm -f /usr/include/boost ln -s /usr/include/boost141/boost /usr/include/boost With all of the dependancies installed and paths setup I then download and compile gearmand-1.1.2 just fine. wget -O /tmp/gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz https://launchpad.net/gearmand/1.2/1.1.2/+download/gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz cd /tmp && tar zxvf gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz ./configure && make -j8 && make install That works correctly. So now I need to install the Gearman library for PHP. I have attempted through PECL and downloading the source directly, both result in the same error: checking whether to enable gearman support... yes, shared not found configure: error: Please install libgearman What I don't understand is I installed the libgearman-devel package which also installed the core libgearman. The installation installs libgearman-devel-0.14-3.el5.x86_64, libgearman-devel-0.14-3.el5.i386, libgearman-0.14-3.el5.x86_64, and libgearman-0.14-3.el5.i386. Is it possible the package version is lower than what is required? I'm still poking around with this, but figured I'd throw this up to see if anyone has a solution while I continue to research a fix.   I've Googled around for this to no avail, I'm sure its just something simple but I have not been able to figure this out perhaps because searching in Google or SF for a "-" can be problematic. I had a strange directory listing show up the other day in my git repository within Drupal. Listing my sites directory looks like this: -sh-4.1$ ls -al total 52 drwxr-xr-x 5 (hide) (hide) 4096 Dec 6 16:15 . drwxr-xr-x 24 (hide) (hide) 4096 Dec 11 16:22 .. -rw-rw-r-- 1 (hide) (hide) 24271 Dec 6 15:57 – drwxrwxr-x 4 (hide) (hide) 4096 Sep 17 11:53 all drwxr-xr-x 3 (hide) (hide) 4096 Sep 17 11:54 default drwxrwxr-x 8 (hide) (hide) 4096 Dec 11 17:40 .git -rw-rw-r-- 1 (hide) (hide) 476 Sep 17 11:53 .gitignore -rw-rw-r-- 1 (hide) (hide) 81 Sep 17 11:53 README.md This "-" file cannot be opened and does not appear to be a symlink, although when I execute "cd -" I get this: -sh-4.1$ cd - /home/sites/dev1.(hide).com That is coincidentally or not the users home directory, and the site's root directory. The other strange this is this entry does not show up for any other user browsing this same directory. Nor does it show up for other users period in their Git directories. The entry cannot be removed via RM. Running Centos 6.2 by the way...

• Missing boot files in Windows 8

  I had a partition with Windows 8 Release Preview, Windows' System Reserved partition and the empty space of the beginning of disk. I moved two partitions to the beginning of disk using Ubuntu Live CD and GParted. After that, the Windows Loader didn't boot and throw an error about missing files. I fixed it using the commands: bootsect /nt60 sys /force /mbr bootrec /rebuildbcd bootrec /fixboot bootrec /fixmbr When I used "Automatic repair" option from "Advanced boot" menu, it throw an error like: Windows can't fix your boot problems. For more information see file C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt In this file I found a description of the system repair actions and at the end of file: Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully. Now, when I use the Advanced boot menu from Windows 8 (PC settings - General - Advanced startup) I receive an error: Restart your PC to try again. It looks like something didn't load correctly. Restarting might fix the problem. If this happens more than once, you might also be able to find help by searching online for the specific error code. Erorr code: 0x8007090. 0x80070490 is the error code ERROR_NOT_FOUND. What are the missing boot files and how can I restore them? • Is it worthwhile to block malicious crawlers via iptables?

  I periodically check my server logs and I notice a lot of crawlers search for the location of phpmyadmin, zencart, roundcube, administrator sections and other sensitive data. Then there are also crawlers under the name "Morfeus Fucking Scanner" or "Morfeus Strikes Again" searching for vulnerabilities in my PHP scripts and crawlers that perform strange (XSS?) GET requests such as: GET /static/)self.html(selector?jQuery( GET /static/]||!jQuery.support.htmlSerialize&&[1, GET /static/);display=elem.css( GET /static/.*. GET /static/);jQuery.removeData(elem, Until now I've always been storing these IPs manually to block them using iptables. But as these requests are only performed a maximum number of times from the same IP, I'm having my doubts if it does provide any advantage security related by blocking them. I'd like to know if it does anyone any good to block these crawlers in the firewall, and if so if there's a (not too complex) way of doing this automatically. And if it's wasted effort, maybe because these requests come from from new IPs after a while, if anyone can elaborate on this and maybe provide suggestion for more efficient ways of denying/restricting malicious crawler access. • VMware Fusion won't boot my Boot Camp partition

  I have a Boot Camp partition on my MacBook that I would ultimately like to convert to a VMware virtual machine image. I've installed VMware Fusion and tried to start up my Boot Camp install using the Boot Camp button on the initial welcome screen. It brings up the "VMware Fusion is preparing your Boot Camp partition to run as a virtual machine" dialog, but afterward it shows an error dialog with the following message: Boot Camp partition preprocessing failed. You may not be able to boot your Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine. It then tries to boot the new VM, but it blue screens during the boot process. The info on the blue screen doesn't provide much in the way of help though. Running chkdsk has no effect. After searching around, some people recommended using VMware's stand-alone converter utility from within Windows to create an image, but the utility said it couldn't create an image because my disk uses a GUID Partition Table (GPT). I'm wondering if this is why it can't boot my BC partition from Fusion. Has anyone else run into this and found a fix?

• Fresh Proxmox VE 2.1 installation with defaults can't be reached or pinged

  I am using the lastest Proxmox VE 2.1. My server has two NICS with a uplink only connected into eth0. My Server is a co-located server utilizing public IPv4 IPs. It is not behind a firewall or any system which monitors traffic. Via IPKVM I did a fresh install of Proxmox, I put in the correct IP, Mask, Gateway, and DNS information. The install went perfectly fine with no errors. Upon completion and rebooting the system: I am unable to reach the web GUI via the browser, it just times out. I am unable to ping the server. I am unable to ping outside to the Internet from within the server. Tried pinging out to 4.2.2.2 and yahoo.com I tried rebooting the server and restarting the network service. IFCONFIG shows my IP information under vmbro0 which also has the same MAC address as the eth0 device. eth0 only displays a IPv6 Scope:Link address, which I did not setup myself. This is my first time installing proxmox, but after searching for a few hours it doesn't seem like anyone else is having the same issue as me from a fresh install with just the defaults. So far the only thing I did was install it. Also, I know the network cable is good and the IP is good because I was running a Xen XCP server with the same network settings prior to wiping it to install proxmox. • 8007064c(2011) and 80280007(2009) persistant after all known repairs

  I'm on Windows 7 Home x64, and have ran into a major issue with Live Messenger(which I use daily). I have full offline installers for both 2011 and the last Wave 3 2009(14.0.8117.0416) Suites. Both give the following errors: Live Essentials 2011 Offline installer(official): An unknown error occured. Error:0x8007064c Source WLXSuite WL 2009 offline installer(official): You already have a more recent version of Windows Live. Error: OnCatalogResult:0x80280007 Next steps: If you want to install this older version, first uninstall any later versions that are on your computer. Get help with this error The 2011 installer also says it is updating messenger, I don't select anything else. Then last 2009 installer says their is a newer version that needs uninstalled even after the following procedures. MS Help pages provided all basically lead to using uninstall from control panel. Which I've uninstalled all Live components including watcom safety scanner and portable SQL from. I've followed online instructions for manually deleting folders from Program Files(x86), Appdata, and some others under \User\All Users and the one for the one account on the machine. I've used CCcleaner 3.01, ASC 3.7.3 and Beta 4 with deep scan along with deleting folders, and checked their uninstallers for Live components too, and none were there. wlmuninstaller.exe tool reports nothing, but after a failed install it finds something, but failes to clean it under all user admin privilege. The same errors still occur after all of that. Google searching I see people on forums suggesting reinstalling the OS cause MS doesn't even know how to fix this, but I'm hoping someone here can help. NOTE: I don't have System Restore or any other state freeze utilities going, and I don't have any real time AV going(I sometime scan with defender, anti rootkits, and online scanners). • AMD 700, 800 series chipset. I'm lost.

  I've been an Intel / NVidia user ever since I started using computers. Intel really gone up with the prices, and they won't get cheaper. So I decided to get an AMD. But WHICH one? I mean.. not shopping question but.. what are the differences? Like: 880GMA comes only with a single PCI ex and it looks like a chinese replica (no offense). While 890FX comes with 5PCI-ex for QuadCrossfire. Also.. what's the deal with 7xx series? I mean.. its the same price. Yet its older? Or why is it 7xx? Isn't there a single chipset between? Not chinese YET it's durable/fine for long-term usage? What it should know (desktop stuff): NVidia GPU (Zalman AMP2 GTX 260^2 (one card)) Phenom 1090T cpu A somewhat good audio. Any ideas which is the chipset I'm searching for? If this sounds too much of a shopping question, feel free to edit. I just want some clarification on these chipsets.

• Kindle (client) for Mac

  So we're clear, i'm talking bout the client/software version here--ie, that you install on your Mac or PC--not the device. The Kindle client was recently released for the Mac. I bought a couple of Kindle-edition books and i'm reading them using this client. Astonishingly, two features i consider to be more or less essential to any ebook reader are missing in the Kindle client, either that, or i can't find them: (i) text searching; and (ii) highlighting text. First, does anyone know how to access the search feature? I'm aware of the "Go To" button at the top middle of the reader window--the options in that menu when you click the button are: "Cover", "Table of Contents", "Beginning" and "Location." "Location" requires that you type in an integer (but it doesn't correspond to page number--e.g., typing "167" brought me to the table of contents), not a search term. Second, there's a button on the upper right-hand corner of the window "Show Notes and Marks" yet i can't find any way to highlight text. The only kind of "note" or "mark" i have been able to record is to "bookmark" a page by clicking the "bookmark" button also at the top of the window.

• Subversion Edge LDAP (require CAC Certificate not Username and Password)

  What I've Done: I've successfully installed and configured Subversion Edge 3.1.2 with LDAP support on a Windows 2008 server. I have configured LDAP users and am able to use LDAP credentials to work on repositories just fine. No issues whatsoever. Works great! What I Want To Do: I've been searching for several hours now in hopes to find some information on how to configure Subversion Edge server to require client certificates for user authentication against an LDAP environment. I have not found anything yet that gives me an indication of how to do it. I know there are SVN clients that are capable of prompting for CAC certificates but I cannot figure out how to set my server up to require it. NOTE: CAC authentication is already setup and working in the windows environment. Desired Outcome: When running svn commands that require authentication against my Subversion Edge Server I want it to prompt me for my CAC certificate instead of my Active Directory username and password. If anyone has any information on this I'd greatly appreciate it. EDIT: I'm still digging so if I find out anything I'll update this question with what I found.

• Changes to grub in ubuntu 10

  I've been running CentOS 5 for some years. I've decided to upgrade to Ubuntu, and with 10.04 just out, this seemed like a good time. I'm a tad paranoid, so I started off with a new set of drives - one to install on, one to backup to, and one as a spare. I removed my existing CentOS 5 drives, and did an install, and had no problems. I installed the server version, and used the default full-disk LVM installation. Next, I copies my backup scripts over, edited them to work with the new configuration, and did a test backup. That worked fine, as well. Then comes the real test, could I do an install of the backup onto the spare drive? (I won't put anything of importance on a system that doesn't have a reliable backup, and if I've never done a restore, it's not reliable.) I booted from a System Rescue CD (ver 1.5.3), with the spare drive as /dev/sda, and the backup drive as /dev/sdb. I had no trouble in partitioning, configuring LVM, formatting, making swap, or restoring the file systems. But when I got to restoring grub to the MBR, I ran into problems. My restore instructions from CentOS 5 said run grub, then enter two commands: root (hd0,0) setup (hd0) The first command exits with an error: "Checking if /boot/grub/stage1 exists ... no" I did some googling around, and found that the Grub2 included in recent Ubuntus is very different than the Grub 0.97 included in CentOS 5. One site suggested I use: grub-install --root-dir=/mnt/restore /dev/sda That appeared to work, but when I booted from the drive, I ended up at a grub prompt. Any ideas as to what I need to do? It seems like a simple problem, but my attempts at searching out answers on the web are being swamped by references to the old version of Grub. Help would be appreciated.

• VIM with iA Writer type formatting?

  I've been Googling for a while now. I would like to have iA Writer-like (or a bit like StackExchange) formatting in Vim. Since I love the way it formats my texts, but I'm constantly pressing "w" to skip words because my experience with Vim. I would love to be able to have the same smart formatting in Vim. I did found a nice Vim plugin for getting Vim to toggle to big and clean font: https://github.com/honza/writer.vim But this still does not enable me to use the formatting: # Header 1 ## Header 2 *underline* **strong** etc... Besides all this above, I would not mind to have Vim like shortcuts in my iA writer app if it would not be possible to implement iA formatting in Vim. Edit: After a while of even more searching, I found out this type of formatting is called Markdown. I am starting to think there isn't really a good way to directly edit a Markdown file in Vim, because Vim is not able to make things display like that? I would really like to be able to use the movement shortcuts in combination of the nice formatting of Markdown and how it is displayed in iA Writer.
