• SFTP to download whole directory?

  I'm on ubuntu. I only have sftp access to a remote server. The remote server disabled shell, so i can't use ssh or scp command. Is there a way for me to recursively get the entire /var/www directory onto my localhost?

  I want to use WHM/Cpanel's Host Access Control interface to change some settings in hosts.allow and hosts.deny. I want to block all access to our SSH exept from the IP we have from our office. Daemon Access List Action Comment sshd ALL EXCEPT x.x.x.x deny Deny access from all other IPs apart from ours But I am worried about what happens if our IP changes, which it does about twice a week. How would I get back in to edit the hosts.allow / hosts.deny files?

I restructured my caching system to put cache files into different folders, inside the /cache dir. new cache files are already being written to those sub-folders.   I realize for single applications - the application itself has to be designed to take advantage of multiple cores. But what about executing many different applications simultaneously? On my development machine at an average instance, I run multiple servers (a database server, a web server), multiple instance of IDEs (either Visual Studio or NetBeans), Web-browser with multiple tabs (in Chrome, each tab is a process on its own), FTP client, SSH client etc. Does having a multi-core system improve the ability to run multiple applications simultaneously?

• Computer name not appearing on network

  I can connect to other computers on my home network (ubuntu + OSX machines) using the IP address, but I can't connect using the netbios name. On the mac the name appears in Finder but if I try to connect (goconnect to server smb://[email protected]) it doesn't work, while smb://[email protected] does. Same with ssh, ping and afp between the macs. This is a intermittent problem. It has worked in the past.

  I ssh into a ubuntu box with username "ubuntu" and I can become root without entering a password via "sudo su". How can I scp files onto this box using the ubuntu@ username? It does not allow me to do so using root@. The error is: scp: /etc/...: Permission denied I can do this same task in rsync by using --rsync-path="sudo rsync" for example.

  I've been developing these apps just fine on a local machine as has my co worker. We recently moved our work desks so we're now on a different floor of the building, but we only have one router that we're connected to. Since then, connecting to this one server appears to timeout more often than not. Occasionally I get through, and the loading is instantaneous. • Quick way to bypass proxy with DownThemAll

  I've been using an SSH proxy to my home network to encrypt my internet surfing, which is fine. But the connection is much slower than the direct one, and when I'm downloading large files I'd rather go around the proxy. Currently, I send it to Downthemall, go to FoxyProxy and disable the proxy, cancel and resume the download, then when it's started go back to FoxyProxy and re-enable it. Is there any way I can just get DownThemAll stuff to skip the foxyproxy?

  I can get the password and group from the LDAP client getent passwd getent group work sucessfully But when I try 'su USERNAME' the name from the LDAP server or 'ssh USERNAME@localhost' it prompt me a user password, I typed exactly the USERNAME password but it return "su : Authentication Failure" or "Permission denied, Please try again". I don't know why? it only work when I was at root at the client and "su USERNAME"

• Ping Unknown Host on CentOS at EC2

  Weird problem. We have a collection of servers running CentOS 5 on EC2. The setup includes two DNS servers and two LDAP servers. DNS has a CNAME pointing at the primary LDAP server. One machine (and only one machine) is giving me problems. I can ssh into the server using LDAP authentication. But once I'm on the machine, ping won't resolve the LDAP host even though DNS seems to work fine.
