• Troubleshooting an NFS server hanging after authenticated mount request

  I need some advice on troubleshooting an NFS server problem on Scientific Linux (RHEL) 6.1. The log on the server shows that an authenticated mount request was made: Jan 13 16:30:02 ??? rpc.mountd[3996]: authenticated mount request from ????:784 for /shared-storage/cm/shared (/shared-storage/cm/shared) But after that, it does not continue. On the client, it is also hanging. The interesting thing now is that I have two NFS servers, which should be identical, and the one is working perfectly, but the other exhibits the above mentioned behaviour. The problem is also not completely persistent, i. e. sometimes the mount request succeeds. I assume that the problem must be related to the server rather than to the client, because it is working perfectly on the other server. My question is where I should search the problem. I have already re-created the exports using exportfs -r, I have restarted the NFS server, I have compared the rpcinfo outputs of both server - no success. The problem even survives a reboot. Any other ideas are appreciated. Again an edit: The error is not on the (software) device that is used for NFS, but on another one. The NFS mount also does not trigger the message.

  Hello, I have a root-server (i7/24GB/1TB) running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as my OS. After some security audits (OpenVAS, Retina etc) I see that Ubuntu isn't the most secure system for a semi-corporate environment. Its updated from many sources, ofc from the Ubuntu security repo too. But nevertheless I could exploit my OpenSSL install with an exploit from August/September. There are some critical updates needed which Ubuntu does not provide. I was using Debian and Ubuntu for almost 5 years but now I doubt. What distro is secure and up to date from your point of view? How can I make the server more secure? Outsourcing of every software-module to a VM? I am not new to server-hardening, my packages are up to date I read Ubuntu Security Notices and I have no unneeded services installed on my server. • Forcing users to change password on first login - Windows Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services

  I'm setting up a demo lab environment in which each demo lab user is assigned 4 accounts to use in the lab. Users access the lab via Remote Desktop to the "client" machine in the lab - exposed at demolab.mydomain.com. The Client machine is a Windows 2008 Server R2 Enterprise Edition server The Remote Desktop Services role is configured on this server Remote Connection settings are configured to allow users to connect with any version of the Remote Desktop Client All accounts are members of the local Administrators and Remote Desktop Users groups All accounts are configured to be forced to change the default password after first login The user is instructed to remote into the lab with an account designated as their main account, and establish 3 more remote desktop sessions within the lab using their 3 other assigned demo lab accounts. When establishing the initial remote desktop connection to the lab using their main account, the user sees the change password dialog as expected. However, after logging in and trying to establish remote desktop connections to the server with their three other accounts, they are prompted that they need to change the password after logging in but can't continue with the login process - they don't see the expected change password experience. After logging in with a primary accounts, it doesn't make a difference if I try establishing a Remote Desktop connection to the environment using the name of the server, e.g. Client, or demolab.mydomain.com. I experimented with changing the settings for Remote Connections to require NLA but that didn't make a different. Appreciate any tips. Thanks

• Delay index build until SQL Server table load is complete with SSIS

  I have a large table that I am updating. Is it possible to disable index updates on the destination table until the load is complete? It seems like a waste for it to be constantly updating the index with each commit. I can just drop and recreate the index before and after the load, I just want to know if there is a quick way to configure that in the OLEDB or SQL Server destination. Server is Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition, running SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition with SSIS.

The database consists of tables, packages, materialized views, procedures etc. We are planning to decommission Oracle and migrate to SQL server 2008. Can you provide your experience on this similar exercise? What is the best approach to undertake this exercise? Are there any tools available with Microsoft to implement this? Once SQL server is commissioned, is it possible to connect SQL server to Oracle server in downstream applications?

  Hello, Im looking for the best way to accomplish a full backup of our "vmail" accounts on our mail server (CentOS "iRedMail" 5.1). I also need to split on 4GB parts the resulting tar or bzip compressed backup, and get this DVD-RW burned, on same server. The idea is to get this procedure to running overnight, once a week. Our mail server holds about 45GB of information. I will appreciate any advise or help on this topic. Thanks.

• Trouble migrating Joomla from Linux to Windows server

  I'm having some trouble migrating a Joomla website from a Linux server to a Windows server. The database came over fine, Besides that, all I've done is download all the files from the current site, and change configuration.php so the log and tmp directories show "./tmp/" and "./logs/" I keep having an error in the PHP log stating PHP Fatal error: Class 'JTable' not found I've downloaded the site multiple times now, and I'm convinced this is a configuration problem, and not a missing file problem. I've even tried installing a mod for backup on the linux box to try and migrate the site, but sadly the mod had problems installing. The new server is running IIS 7.5 on Windows Web Server.   I am setting up log shipping with two 2008 sql servers connecting with a vpn. As far as I know as long as the sql agent is able to access the share on the primary/secondary servers everything will work. When I set up the Log shipping on the primary server using SQL Mangagement Studio, before I can set any of the "Secondary Database Settings" it asks me to connect to the secondary server. But I really don't want to open up the connection to the secondary server. I will be initialing this secondary database with a backup so as long as the transaction logs get copies everything should work. How to I work around the GUI not enabling any of the settings for the secondary server until I actually connect to it? Thanks in advance!

  We're developing some custom web parts for our WSS 3 intranet, and have just run into something we'd like to use ASP.NET sessions for. This isn't currently enabled on the development server. We'd like to use SQL Server as the storage mechanism, because the production environment is a web farm with very simple load-balancing. There are 3 options you can choose from to set up the SQL Server session storage, tempdb, default separate DB, named DB. Both tempdb and default separate DB create a new DB to store certain information in; tempdb stores the actual session info in tempdb, which doesn't survive a reboot, and default separate DB stores everything in the new DB. Since you've got to create the new DB either way, my question is this: why would you ever choose to store the session info in tempdb? The only thing I can think of is if you'd like to have the ability to wipe the session by rebooting the server, but that seems quite apocalyptic!

• Enabled Network Discovery on Server, and now VNC and Squeezebox clients don't work

  I've recently setup a Windows Server 2008. It's running an email server, Squeezebox server, MS SQL Server, etc. I'm doing remote maintenance with UltraVNC. I had everything working fine. Then the server needed to access a network share on another machine, and I was prompted to turn on network discovery, which I did. I chose the Home rather than Public option. Since doing that, some things have stopped working, while others are still fine. Shared folders and the the Email services (ports 25 and 110) are still accessible. VNC (port 5900) and Squeezeboxes (port 9000) no longer work. Here's what I've tried to try to solve the problem: Checked the network discovery settings, to see if anything looked strange. Checked the firewall settings, and those ports appear to be open. Also in the firewall settings, the entries for Private domain Network Discovery were all on, but the Domain/Public ones were off. I tried turning those on. In the services, turned on Function Discovery Resource Publication and SSDP Discovery. Any other suggestions?

  If my server is placed in PTP v2 enabled network which has grand master clock. And the switch is PTP aware. The server is W2008R2 (soon to be W2012). I also have PTP v2 software client. How does the master clock messages are getting on with Windows Server? Does it need special PTP-aware NIC or it will be treated as normal networking traffic and the software receives it through regular NIC no problem?

• Windows Server 2008 - inexplicable system time jumps/glitches/inaccuracies

  I'm running a production web server on Windows Server 2008. On this server I have a database which logs certain user actions, but every now and again I inexplicably get database entries which, according to the record ID and the records immediately before and after, have the wrong time logged against them (7 days+ too old). For example, record ID 1001 will be for Dec 7, 11pm, 1002 will be for Dec 7, 11:01pm, then 1003 will be for Nov 28, 1:38am, then the next will be back on track again. The problem seems to occur in random records (or 2-3 records in a row) and crops up once every few days. This is absolutely baffling because there is only one place in the application that assigns this date/time value and it's simply the system UTC date. I have been synchronizing the system time to time-a.nist.gov (which I read in another article was a bit more reliable than the default time.windows.com) and it seems to occasionally get out of time anyway (3-4 minutes), but I'm speculating that occasionally the time server has a temporary glitch where the date changes to a drastically wrong value for a short space of time, then changes back. Either that, or the motherboard clock battery is screwed and the reason the time momentarily changes is that the motherboard loses the time and then the time synchronization puts it back again. Could either of my suspicions be right? Should I turn off time synchronization for a production server? Assigning dates to an event log where the dates are up to 2 weeks prior to the actual date is a severe problem I can't have when the next version of my application is released. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

• SQL server 2000 reporting bad values to ASP.Net Application

  I have an instance of SQL server 2000 (8.0.2039) with a rather simple table. We recently had users complain about an application I wrote returning bad values for some of the dates in the databse. When I query the table directly via Server Management Studio, it will return the correct values, however the identical queries from my application report the wrong values, but only for a couple of dates. I have been over the code, and it is solid. If the error was in the code, all of the dates reported should be wrong. I have also run the code on an identical test database, and everything is reported properly. I believe the problem may lie in the sql instance itself, which is why I am posting in Server Fault. My question is, has anyone heard of a database reporting bad (incorrect) date values when queried via web application? It should be noted that this particular server was once manually rebuilt after having a cluster clean run on it.

  I have a small server room with its own AC unit. Recently, the AC died, and the temperature increased from 70 F to 90 F. We rarely go in this room, so I was lucky that someone happened to notice that the fans were running a lot louder than normal as they walked past the door. It looks like I need a way to be notified when the temperature in that room gets too hot. What tools are you using to monitor the temperature in your server room? How does this tool notify you of a problem (email, SNMP, etc). Note: I've read this question on server temperature, but I'm interested in the whole room, not just the inside of a server case.
