  • Generate n-dimensional random numbers in Python

    - by Magsol
    I'm trying to generate random numbers from a gaussian distribution. Python has the very useful random.gauss() method, but this is only a one-dimensional random variable. How could I programmatically generate random numbers from this distribution in n-dimensions? For example, in two dimensions, the return value of this method is essentially distance from the mean, so I would still need (x,y) coordinates to determine an actual data point. I suppose I could generate two more random numbers, but I'm not sure how to set up the constraints. I appreciate any insights. Thanks!

  • how to make a name from random numbers?

    - by blood
    my program makes a random name that could have a-z this code makes a 16 char name but :( my code wont make the name and idk why :( can anyone show me what's wrong with this? char name[16]; void make_random_name() { byte loop = -1; for(;;) { loop++; srand((unsigned)time(0)); int random_integer; random_integer = (rand()%10)+1; switch(random_integer) { case '1': name[loop] = 'A'; break; case '2': name[loop] = 'B'; break; case '3': name[loop] = 'C'; break; case '4': name[loop] = 'D'; break; case '5': name[loop] = 'E'; break; case '6': name[loop] = 'F'; break; case '7': name[loop] = 'G'; break; case '8': name[loop] = 'Z'; break; case '9': name[loop] = 'H'; break; } cout << name << "\n"; if(loop > 15) { break; } } }

  • form a number using consecutive numbers

    - by Mahesh
    Hi, I was puzzled with one of the question in Microsoft interview which is as given below: A function should accept a range( 3 - 21 ) and it should print all the consecutive numbers combination's to form each number as given below: 3=1+2 5=2+3 6=1+2+3 7=3+4 9=4+5 10=1+2+3+4 11=5+6 13=6+7 15=1+2+3+4+5 17=7+8 19=8+9 21=10+11 21=1+2+3+4+5+6 could you please help me in forming this sequence in C#? Thanks, Mahesh

  • How to shuffle pairs

    - by Jessy
    How to shuffle the elements in the pairs? The program below, generate all possible pairs and later shuffle the pairs. e.g. possible pairs before shuffle is ab,ac,ae,af..etc shuffled to ac,ae,af,ab...etc How to make it not only shuffled in pairs but within the elements in the pair itself? e.g. instead of ab, ac, how can I make ba, ac ? String[] pictureFile = {"a.jpg","b.jpg","c.jpg","d.jpg","e.jpg","f.jpg","g.jpg"}; List <String> pic1= Arrays.asList(pictureFile); ... ListGenerator pic2= new ListGenerator(pic1); ArrayList<ArrayList<Integer>> pic2= new ArrayList<ArrayList<Integer>>(); public class ListGenerator { public ListGenerator(List<String> pic1) { int size = pic1.size(); // create a list of all possible combinations for(int i = 0 ; i < size ; i++) { for(int j = (i+1) ; j < size ; j++) { ArrayList<Integer> temp = new ArrayList<Integer>(); temp.add(i); temp.add(j); pic2.add(temp); } } Collections.shuffle(pic2); } //This method return the shuffled list public ArrayList<ArrayList<Integer>> getList() { return pic2; } }

  • How does this C# asp.net random password code work?

    - by quakkels
    Hello all, I'm new to .NET and C# and I'm trying to figure out how this code works: public static string CreateRandomPassword(int PasswordLength) { String _allowedChars = "abcdefghijkmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ23456789"; Byte[] randomBytes = new Byte[PasswordLength]; RNGCryptoServiceProvider rng = new RNGCryptoServiceProvider(); rng.GetBytes(randomBytes); char[] chars = new char[PasswordLength]; int allowedCharCount = _allowedChars.Length; for(int i = 0;i<PasswordLength;i++) { /// /// I don't understand how this line works: /// chars[i] = _allowedChars[(int)randomBytes[i] % allowedCharCount]; } return new string(chars); } I think I've got a pretty good handle on most of this. I haven't been able to understand the following line: chars[i] = _allowedChars[(int)randomBytes[i] % allowedCharCount]; I understand that the code generates random binary numbers and uses those random numbers in the for loop to select a character from the _allowedChars string. What I don't get is why this code uses the modulous operator (%) to get the _allowedChars index value. Thanks for any help

  • How to create Context Menu using XML file ?

    - by Kaillash
    I am using XML file for creating Context Menu for my ListView. (Please see below). I also want to set a header for this Context Menu. I read (at http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg43062.html)that I can use menu.setHeaderTitle(myContextMenuTitle) in onCreateContextMenu Method. But I need to set this in XML file. How can I accomplish this? Following is code for onCreateContextMenu Method, correct me if I am doing anything wrong.. This is my context_menu.xml file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"> <item android:id="@+id/open" android:title="Open"/> </menu> This is my onCreateContextMenu Method: @Override public void onCreateContextMenu(ContextMenu menu, View v, ContextMenuInfo menuInfo) { MenuInflater inflater = getMenuInflater(); inflater.inflate(R.menu.context_menu, menu); super.onCreateContextMenu(menu, v, menuInfo); } This is my onCreate Method: @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); // extras = getIntent().getExtras(); registerForContextMenu(getListView()); ... }

  • XSLT fails to load huge XML doc after matching certain elements

    - by krisvandenbergh
    I'm trying to match certain elements using XSLT. My input document is very large and the source XML fails to load after processing the following code (consider especially the first line). <xsl:template match="XMI/XMI.content/Model_Management.Model/Foundation.Core.Namespace.ownedElement/Model_Management.Package/Foundation.Core.Namespace.ownedElement"> <rdf:RDF> <rdf:Description rdf:about=""> <xsl:for-each select="Foundation.Core.Class"> <xsl:for-each select="Foundation.Core.ModelElement.name"> <owl:Class rdf:ID="@Foundation.Core.ModelElement.name" /> </xsl:for-each> </xsl:for-each> </rdf:Description> </rdf:RDF> </xsl:template> Apparently the XSLT fails to load after "Model_Management.Model". The PHP code is as follows: if ($xml->loadXML($source_xml) == false) { die('Failed to load source XML: ' . $http_file); } It then fails to perform loadXML and immediately dies. I think there are two options now. 1) I should set a maximum executing time. Frankly, I don't know how that I do this for the built-in PHP 5 XSLT processor. 2) Think about another way to match. What would be the best way to deal with this? The input document can be found at http://krisvandenbergh.be/uml_pricing.xml Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

  • Can parser combinators be made efficient?

    - by Jon Harrop
    Around 6 years ago, I benchmarked my own parser combinators in OCaml and found that they were ~5× slower than the parser generators on offer at the time. I recently revisited this subject and benchmarked Haskell's Parsec vs a simple hand-rolled precedence climbing parser written in F# and was surprised to find the F# to be 25× faster than the Haskell. Here's the Haskell code I used to read a large mathematical expression from file, parse and evaluate it: import Control.Applicative import Text.Parsec hiding ((<|>)) expr = chainl1 term ((+) <$ char '+' <|> (-) <$ char '-') term = chainl1 fact ((*) <$ char '*' <|> div <$ char '/') fact = read <$> many1 digit <|> char '(' *> expr <* char ')' eval :: String -> Int eval = either (error . show) id . parse expr "" . filter (/= ' ') main :: IO () main = do file <- readFile "expr" putStr $ show $ eval file putStr "\n" and here's my self-contained precedence climbing parser in F#: let rec (|Expr|) (P(f, xs)) = Expr(loop (' ', f, xs)) and loop = function | ' ' as oop, f, ('+' | '-' as op)::P(g, xs) | (' ' | '+' | '-' as oop), f, ('*' | '/' as op)::P(g, xs) -> let h, xs = loop (op, g, xs) let op = match op with | '+' -> (+) | '-' -> (-) | '*' -> (*) | '/' -> (/) loop (oop, op f h, xs) | _, f, xs -> f, xs and (|P|) = function | '('::Expr(f, ')'::xs) -> P(f, xs) | c::xs when '0' <= c && c <= '9' -> P(int(string c), xs) My impression is that even state-of-the-art parser combinators waste a lot of time back tracking. Is that correct? If so, is it possible to write parser combinators that generate state machines to obtain competitive performance or is it necessary to use code generation?

  • Synchronizing thread communication?

    - by Roger Alsing
    Just for the heck of it I'm trying to emulate how JRuby generators work using threads in C#. Also, I'm fully aware that C# haas built in support for yield return, I'm just toying around a bit. I guess it's some sort of poor mans coroutines by keeping multiple callstacks alive using threads. (even though none of the callstacks should execute at the same time) The idea is like this: The consumer thread requests a value The worker thread provides a value and yields back to the consumer thread Repeat untill worker thread is done So, what would be the correct way of doing the following? //example class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { ThreadedEnumerator<string> enumerator = new ThreadedEnumerator<string>(); enumerator.Init(() => { for (int i = 1; i < 100; i++) { enumerator.Yield(i.ToString()); } }); foreach (var item in enumerator) { Console.WriteLine(item); }; Console.ReadLine(); } } //naive threaded enumerator public class ThreadedEnumerator<T> : IEnumerator<T>, IEnumerable<T> { private Thread enumeratorThread; private T current; private bool hasMore = true; private bool isStarted = false; AutoResetEvent enumeratorEvent = new AutoResetEvent(false); AutoResetEvent consumerEvent = new AutoResetEvent(false); public void Yield(T item) { //wait for consumer to request a value consumerEvent.WaitOne(); //assign the value current = item; //signal that we have yielded the requested enumeratorEvent.Set(); } public void Init(Action userAction) { Action WrappedAction = () => { userAction(); consumerEvent.WaitOne(); enumeratorEvent.Set(); hasMore = false; }; ThreadStart ts = new ThreadStart(WrappedAction); enumeratorThread = new Thread(ts); enumeratorThread.IsBackground = true; isStarted = false; } public T Current { get { return current; } } public void Dispose() { enumeratorThread.Abort(); } object System.Collections.IEnumerator.Current { get { return Current; } } public bool MoveNext() { if (!isStarted) { isStarted = true; enumeratorThread.Start(); } //signal that we are ready to receive a value consumerEvent.Set(); //wait for the enumerator to yield enumeratorEvent.WaitOne(); return hasMore; } public void Reset() { throw new NotImplementedException(); } public IEnumerator<T> GetEnumerator() { return this; } System.Collections.IEnumerator System.Collections.IEnumerable.GetEnumerator() { return this; } } Ideas?

  • libnet that properly calculates checksum on IPV6

    - by VeaEm
    I have recently started playing around with libnet and using it to generate IPV6 packets. I am very new at programming, however, I am quite happy with the library. I have one problem with it though. It seems that libnet currently does not have the ability to properly calculate checksums on IPV6 packets. Being so new to programming, I am not yet capable of fixing this problem (although I am learning, so that one day I can). I am curious, has anyone run across a version of the library that can do this properly? Thanks!

  • How to post a SOAP request from a browser?

    - by understack
    Is it possible to send a SOAP request directly from a browser to service provider? And then parse the output in javascript to show the result? For example, if I've a SOAP request like this : POST /InStock HTTP/1.1 Host: www.example.org Content-Type: application/soap+xml; charset=utf-8 Content-Length: nnn <?xml version="1.0"?> <soap:Envelope xmlns:soap="http://www.w3.org/2001/12/soap-envelope" soap:encodingStyle="http://www.w3.org/2001/12/soap-encoding"> <soap:Body xmlns:m="http://www.example.org/stock"> <m:GetStockPrice> <m:StockName>IBM</m:StockName> </m:GetStockPrice> </soap:Body> </soap:Envelope> Then can I get the 'IBM stock price' by clicking on a link on a web page? And show result after xml processing. EDIT Can I send the whole envelope as POST data?

  • Removing elements using XSLT 1.0

    - by pmdarrow
    I'm attempting to remove Component elements from the XML below that have File children with the extension "config." I've managed to do this part, but I also need to remove the matching ComponentRef elements that have the same IDs as these Components. <Fragment> <DirectoryRef Id="MyWebsite"> <Component Id="Comp1"> <File Source="Web.config" /> </Component> <Component Id="Comp2"> <File Source="Default.aspx" /> </Component> </DirectoryRef> </Fragment> <Fragment> <ComponentGroup Id="MyWebsite"> <ComponentRef Id="Comp1" /> <ComponentRef Id="Comp2" /> </ComponentGroup> </Fragment> Based on other SO answers, I've come up with the following XSLT to remove these Component elements: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"> <xsl:output method="xml" indent="yes" /> <xsl:template match="Component[File[substring(@Source, string-length(@Source)- string-length('config') + 1) = 'config']]" /> <xsl:template match="@*|node()"> <xsl:copy> <xsl:apply-templates select="@*|node()"/> </xsl:copy> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> Unfortunately, this doesn't remove the matching ComponentRef elements. The XSLT will remove the component with the Id "Comp1" but not the ComponentRef with Id "Comp1". How do I achieve this using XSLT 1.0?

  • Counting elements and reading attributes with .net2.0 ?

    - by Prix
    I have an application that is on .net 2.0 and I am having some difficult with it as I am more use to linq. The xml file look like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <updates> <files> <file url="files/filename.ext" checksum="06B9EEA618EEFF53D0E9B97C33C4D3DE3492E086" folder="bin" system="0" size="40448" /> <file url="files/filename.ext" checksum="CA8078D1FDCBD589D3769D293014154B8854D6A9" folder="" system="0" size="216" /> <file url="files/filename.ext" checksum="CA8078D1FDCBD589D3769D293014154B8854D6A9" folder="" system="0" size="216" /> </files> </updates> The file is downloaded and readed on the fly: XmlDocument readXML = new XmlDocument(); readXML.LoadXml(xmlData); Initially i was thinking it would go with something like this: XmlElement root = doc.DocumentElement; XmlNodeList nodes = root.SelectNodes("//files"); foreach (XmlNode node in nodes) { ... im reading it ... } But before reading them I need to know how many they are to use on my progress bar and I am also clueless on how to grab the attribute of the file element in this case. How could I count how many "file" ELEMENTS I have (count them before entering the foreach ofc) and read their attributes ? I need the count because it will be used to update the progress bar. Overall it is not reading my xml very well.

  • Could a truly random number be generated using pings to psuedo-randomly selected IP addresses?

    - by _ande_turner_
    The question posed came about during a 2nd Year Comp Science lecture while discussing the impossibility of generating numbers in a deterministic computational device. This was the only suggestion which didn't depend on non-commodity-class hardware. Subsequently nobody would put their reputation on the line to argue definitively for or against it. Anyone care to make a stand for or against. If so, how about a mention as to a possible implementation?

  • Generating easy-to-remember random identifiers

    - by Carl Seleborg
    Hi all, As all developers do, we constantly deal with some kind of identifiers as part of our daily work. Most of the time, it's about bugs or support tickets. Our software, upon detecting a bug, creates a package that has a name formatted from a timestamp and a version number, which is a cheap way of creating reasonably unique identifiers to avoid mixing packages up. Example: "Bug Report 20101214 174856 6.4b2". My brain just isn't that good at remembering numbers. What I would love to have is a simple way of generating alpha-numeric identifiers that are easy to remember. Examples would be "azil3", "ulmops", "fel2way", etc. I just made these up, but they are much easier to recognize when you see many of them at once. I know of algorithms that perform trigram analysis on text (say you feed them a whole book in German) and that can generate strings that look and feel like German words. This requires lots of data, though, and makes it slightly less suitable for embedding in an application just for this purpose. Do you know of anything else? Thanks! Carl

  • PHP: retrieve all declared namespaces of a DOMElement

    - by soulmerge
    I am using the DOM extension to parse an xml file containing xml namespaces. I would have that namespace declarations are treated just like any other attribute, but my tests seem to disagree. I have a document that starts like this: <rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#" xmlns="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/" xmlns:taxo="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/taxonomy/" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:syn="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/syndication/" xmlns:prism="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/prism/" xmlns:admin="http://webns.net/mvcb/" > And a test code like this: $doc = new DOMDocument(); $doc->loadXml(file_get_contents('/home/soulmerge/tmp/rss1.0/recent.xml')); $root = $doc->documentElement; var_dump($root->tagName); # prints 'string(7) "rdf:RDF"' var_dump($root->attributes->item(0)); # prints 'NULL' var_dump($root->getAttributeNode('xmlns')); # prints 'object(DOMNameSpaceNode)#3 (0) {}' So the questions are: Does anyone know where could I find the documentation of DOMNameSpaceNode? A search on php.net does not yield any useful result. How do I extract all those namespace declarations from that DOMElement?

  • Use XML Layout to contain a simple drawing

    - by user329999
    I would like to create a simple drawing (lines, circles, squares, etc...) but I'm having difficulty figuring out the best way to do this. The drawing would need to be scaled to fit the display since the size is indirectly specified by the user (like in a CAD application). Also, I don't want to take up the entire display, leaving room for some controls (buttons, etc). I would pass the data to describe the drawing. Here's how I imagine it would work. I create an XML layout that contains something that holds the drawing (ImageView, BitmapDrawable, ShapeDrawable, ...??? not sure exactly what). Then in my Activity I would load the main XML and obtain the resource for the control that holds the drawing. I would then draw to a bitmap. Once the bitmap was completed I would load it into the control that is to hold the drawing. Somewhere along this path it would be scaled to fill the entire area allocated for the drawing in the XML layout. I don't know if my approach is the way to do this or what classes to use. I read the http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/graphics/2d-graphics.html documentation, but it's not helping me with an example. The examples I do find leave me with hints, but nothing concrete enough to do what I want, especially when it comes to scaling, using XML and/or having other controls. Also, there seems to be no good documentation on the design of the 2D drawing system in a more conceptual manner, so it makes what I read difficult to put into any useful context. Any hints on what classes would be useful and/or a good example any other reading materials? Thanks

  • Easily (as in WYSIWYG) customize the docbook output

    - by Sukima
    I've used DocBook in the past and I love the idea behind the separation of content from presentation. I am very comfortable editing XML directly. In my extensive search to find the best documenting solution for my needs I am always coming back to this one solution: DocBook - Build system (ant, make, etc.) - Output I have seen lots of information concerning the best WYSIWYG, XML, Text editors for writing DocBook including alternative markup languages like asciidoc. All these solutions focus on the creation of DocBook or the nightmare of the DocBook tool chain. No one ever addresses the Output side other then to say "Just use XSL" or "Custom scripts" When tasked to make a document or manual I don't want to worry about spending countless hours attempting to reprogram, customize, and modify the XSL, CSS, and shell scripts (i.e. O'Riely books). That is a very arduous task. My query: is there a tool that makes the customizing easier? And is there anything that could be similar to say Pages or Word in that the user creates a template and the tool chain does the rest? Attempting to do a visual task like pretty logos and fixing all the broken layouts that the default XSL comes up with (pagination is a mess) is very difficult from a text editor. Content is easy. Editing DocBook XSL was truly a nightmare when I did it in the past. I've searched and I find lots of info on XML editors but nothing on XSL editors. Or am I lacking a key understanding of the process. Thanks.

    I want to send a binary file to .net c# component in the following xml format <BinaryFileString fileType='pdf'> <!--binary file data string here--> </BinaryFileString> In the component that is called I will use the above xml string and convert the binary string recieved within the BinaryFileString tag, into a file as specified by the filetype='' attribute. The file type could be doc/pdf/xls/rtf I have the code in the calling application to get out the bytes from the file to be sent. How do I prepare it to be sent with xml tags wrapped around it? I want the application to send out a string to the component and not a byte stream. This is because there is no way I can decipher the file type [pdf/doc/xls] by just looking at the byte stream. Hence the xml string with the filetype attribute. Any ideas on this? method for extracting Bytes below FileStream fs = new FileStream(_filePath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); using (Stream input = fs) { byte[] buffer = new byte[8192]; int bytesRead; while ((bytesRead = input.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)) > 0) { } } return buffer; Thanks.
