• WSUS report hide not approved updates

  I have a WSUS server which is configured as a replica of the upstream server. My parent organization requires that it is a replica. However, they are not always the fastest at approving updates. I would like to know if there is a way to exclude Unapproved updates from the "Updates Needed" tally. I consistently have 2-3 updates missing from all of my computers, and when I check on them, they are all listed as Unapproved. Any way to do this? Thanks!

  We have an isolated enviornment of a few hundred servers in which we use WSUS to push updates too. We have thousands of updates which to manage and push to devices testing along the way to ensure the update will not break anything. What are the best practices that you all follow in your enteprise networks to ensure an update does not go out to all the machines that will break something? We currently have ours broken into customized groups for each type of machine. There is one "Test Group" which has one PC of each type which we apply updates to for error checking. Is this a similar procedure others follow or is their an easier safer way to manage the thousands of WSUS updates?

• Stop windows resuming from hibernation to install automatic updates

  I always hibernate my work (Windows 7, x64) laptop when leaving for the night. Sometimes when I come in again in the morning, the laptop is powered up and there's a message telling me that new updates have been installed. (I've changed the registry so automatic updates don't force a reboot.) I'm happy to have Windows apply updates automatically, but I don't want it to resume from hibernation to do so. How can I stop this behaviour so I'm not wasting electricity?

• Remotely initiate windows updates

  I have a network with countless workstations on it and the windows updates are done through WSUS in push cycles to allow us to use a generic image and configuration and avoid network congestion. I have a number of workstations in storage that are connected once a month for a few days to recieve updates, however not all of them fall within their push cycle. I want to avoid going to each machine and clicking "check updates" as that would require me to connect a monitor, mouse and keyboard. Is there a way (preferably through powershell but im open minded) to initiate a check and install of updates on a remote system? Lets say for 1 system at a time right now, I can add a file reader and a look later. NOTE: the configuration of the WSUS server is above my pay grade, im simply being asked to ensure these machines are updated. Thanks for any help or hints

• Auto-mount in fstab no longer working until manually running 'sudo mount -a'

  I have 3 SMB shared drives I need to connect to for work purposes. I had Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick and had all my drives loaded into fstab to be auto-mounted. Everything worked fine for a while but just before I upgraded to 11.04 Natty, the fstab auto-mount stopped working. • Updates broke my themes/shell [Ubuntu 12.04 running Gnome 3 ]

  I am running gnome-session 3.4.2.1. After the latest updates (listed below) my theme regressed to what looks like tango - not sure. Am unable to change it using Gnome-tweak tool or the display settings. I am also unable to change the wallpaper. Here's what it looks like: Synaptic: Chromium and this is the wallpaper page even though I have selected the wallpaper, it actually does not change. This same problem occurred on my personal computer, and one other computer I have, all running the same software/config. The interesting thing is that while Gnome 3 and Unity are affected, Cinnamon is not. What I've done so far: purged and re-installed both gnome 3 and Unity- no change noted. So, how do I fix this?   Question: I need to auto-start a GUI application that requires sudo. I know I need to edit the sudoers file with: sudo visudo However, I don't know what to write in the file. • Do you leave Windows Automatic Updates enabled on your production IIS server?

  If you were running a 24/7 website on Windows Server 2003 (IIS6). Would you leave the Windows automatic update feature enabled or would you turn it off? When enabled, you always get the latest security patches and bug fixes automatically as soon as they're available, which is the most secure choice. However, the machine will sometimes get automatically rebooted to apply the updates leading to a couple of minutes of downtime in the middle of the night. Also, I've seen rare occasions where the machine does not restart correctly resulting in further downtime. If auto updates are off, when do you apply the patches? I guess you have to use a load balancer with multiple web servers and rotate them out of the production site, apply patches manually, and put them back in. This can be logistically inconvenient when the load balancer is managed by a hosting company. You will also have machines in production that don't always have the latest security patches and you have to routinely spend time deciding which patches to apply and when.

  I installed Eclipse via the Ubuntu repos (I'm on Ubuntu 11.10). Then I added the Indigo repo (http://download.eclipse.org/releases/indigo/) as only Helios repos were listed as part of the default install. If I go to HelpCheck for Updates then a number of updates are listed for install, however when I click Next I get the following error: Cannot complete the install because of a conflicting dependency. • How can I upgrade my server's kernel without rebooting?

  This is a loaded question because I'm already aware of, and am very interested in ksplice. The problem is that since they were bought by Oracle, they have been forced to pull numerous server distributions from the offerings. The answer isn't as simple as it once was. I noticed a question on Unix.SE that states: You can build your own ksplice patches to dynamically load into your own kernel Great! But how?! I've installed the free ksplice package in the repo on my desktop (not ksplice-uptrack which is non-free) and now want to generate and apply updates. What's the process? Are there any scripts out there to automate the process? Moreover, if all the machinery required for rebootless upgrades is sitting there in the kernel (and ksplice package), why on earth aren't we taking advantage of it by default? Note 1: I am happy for a solution beside ksplice but it has to deliver the same thing: rolling updates to the kernel that can be applied without rebooting the server. Note 2: I'll say it again; the main ksplice "service" does not support Ubuntu Server. It used to but it doesn't any more. When I talk about wanting to use ksplice, I'm talking about the open source tools in the ksplice package. • Auto-select external soundcard?

  Just got an external usb sound card because my internal speakers broke. The new sound card works just fine after plugging it in and going to System Settings Sound, and then selecting the device. However, I was curious as to whether there was a way to make ubuntu auto-select the device without having to go through System Settings. Can it just be selected upon plugging it in? Any and all help appreciated :)) (ps its running 12.04)

UPDATE: Slight correction. The drives never automounted, but I've stopped getting the notification that a drive is plugged in. What processes should I be checking? Something in Device Actions? • CakePHP: How can I disable auto-increment on Model.id?

  CakePHP 1.3.0, mysqli I have a model, Manifest, whose ID should be the unique number from a printed form. However, with Manifest.id set as the primary key, CakePHP is helping me by setting up auto-increment on the field. Is there a way to flag the field via schema.php and/or elsewhere to disable auto-increment? I need just a plain, old primary key without it. The only other solution I can imagine is adding on a separate manifest number field and changing foreign keys in a half dozen other tables. A bit wasteful and not as intuitive.
