SO has given me a good few hints on the kind of figures to quote ( and why ), and a few points to bear in mind such as Non-competition and [IP Protection] Having worked as a programmer for a while, I know that a few reasons for deadline delays may be - Estimates can be all over the place both from the Contractor, and the Job provider Things like bandwidth bottlenecks, merge for high-impact code etc Clarification time on provided requirements... etc If you have worked as a contract programmer then How frequently do you encounter a penalty/forfeit clause in your agreement? What do you deem unacceptable in the penalty/forfeit clause?

• Do I need to use decimal places when using floats? Is the "f" suffix necessary?

  I've seen several examples in books and around the web where they sometimes use decimal places when declaring float values even if they are whole numbers, and sometimes using an "f" suffix. Is this necessary? For example: [UIColor colorWithRed:0.8 green:0.914 blue:0.9 alpha:1.00]; How is this different from: [UIColor colorWithRed:0.8f green:0.914f blue:0.9f alpha:1.00f]; Does the trailing "f" mean anything special? Getting rid of the trailing zeros for the alpha value works too, so it becomes: [UIColor colorWithRed:0.8 green:0.914 blue:0.9 alpha:1]; So are the decimal zeros just there to remind myself and others that the value is a float? Just one of those things that has puzzled me so any clarification is welcome :)

• Is this an example of polymorphism?

  I'm working on a homework assignment (a project), for which one criterion is that I must make use of polymorphism in a way which noticeably improves the overall quality or functionality of my code. I made a Hash Table which looks like this: public class HashTable<E extends Hashable>{ ... } where Hashable is an interface I made that has a hash() function. I know that using generics this way improves the quality of my code, since now HashTable can work with pretty much any type I want (instead of just ints or Strings for example). But I'm not sure if it demonstrates polymorphism. I think it does, because E can be any type that implements Hashable. In other words HashTable is a class which can work with (practically) any type. But I'm not quite sure - is that polymorphism? Perhaps can I get some clarification as to what exactly polymorphism is? Thanks in advance!

• Cocoa Touch - Display an Activity Indicator while loading a UITabBar View

  I have a UITabBar Application with two views that load large amounts of data from the web in their "viewWillAppear" methods. I want to show a progress bar or an activity indicator while this data is being retrieved, to make sure the user knows the app isn't frozen. I am aware that this has been asked before. I simply need some clarification on what seems to be a rather good solution. I have implimented the code in the example. The question's original asker later solved their problem, by putting the retrieval of data into another "thread". I understand the concept of threads, but I do not know how I would impliment this. With research, I have found that I need to move all of my heavy data retrieval into a background thread, as all of the UI updating occurs in the main thread. If one would be so kind as to provide an example for me, I would be very appreciative. I can provide parts of my existing code as necessary.

• What Level of Education Is Most Useful?

  If you were going to hire a programmer to work for/with you, what level of CS education would you prefer them to have and why? This assumes all other things are equal which, of course, they never are in real life. Self taught? Bachelor's? Masters? PHD? The important part of the answer is why, not the level. I'm looking for how important people think a Computer Science education really is and if one can go too far. A little clarification: To make things a little more even, assume you're hiring them without a lot of work experience. Obviously having a higher education is of less value the farther you are from graduation.

• How to convert an arbitrary object to String with JSTL? (calling toString())

  Is there any way to call toString() on an object with the JSTL? (I need the String representation of an enum as index in a map in a JSP EL expression.) I hoped something like ${''+object} would work like in java, but JSTL isn't that nice, and there does not seem to be any function that does it. Clarification: I have a variable somemap that maps Strings to Strings, and I have a variable someenum that is an enumeration. I'd like to do something like ${somemap[someenum.toString()]}. (Of course .toString() does not work, but what does?)

• ASP.Net AJAX controls, adding via .ashx page

  Okay, this is a continuation of a previous question of mine, but it is distinct enough to be its own question. Based on user interaction, I'm calling a .ashx handler via a jquery ajax call, and that handler is building some html for me that includes some Telerik controls like a masked textbox (masked for a phone number like "(###) ###-####". I got around all the hurdles of using Render() to get the html output of a server control even when it doesn't have a "Page" object or a ScriptHandler object. However, when I show the control to a user, I see the mask in the text of the textbox, but the mask doesn't "work" in the sense that when a user starts typing, it is as if the mask is really just text. So, my question is, after putting the html code out for a masked textbox, how do I tell whatever javascript is supposed to mask the input to really start masking on that specific control? I really hope this made sense. Please tell me if you need any clarification.

  Hi all, Is there a vetted Windows-friendly, or even .NET-native, load-distributing/load-balancing utility out there along the lines of HA Proxy? We have a .NET stack product, and the one piece that we step out of the stack is for load-balancing. We need something with configurable rules for distribution -- perhaps subdomain-driven -- that NLB alone doesn't seem to offer. If it integrates directly with .NET, or offers an exposed API callable by webservices, so much the better! Thanks in advance! Clarification: we need to logically part over boxes. This is not just a cluster/failover/replication scenario.

• Is it possible to use WIndows Speech Recognition Engine in a word pronunciation game?

  I use to create an application that uses the windows speech recognition engine or the SAPI. its like a game for pronunciation that it give you score when you pronounce it correctly. but when i started experiments with SAPI, it has poor recognition unless if you load a grammar on it (XML) its give best recognition result. but the problem now is closest pronunciation from the input text will be recognize. for example: Database - dedebase - correct. even if you mispronounce it. it gives you correct answers. without using the xml grammar when you say database it give you "in the base/the base/data base/etc..." please post your answer,suggestion,clarification. votes for best answer. is it possible or not? by the way i use delphi compiler on the projects....

• making certain cells of an ExtJS GridPanel un-editable

  I currently have a GridPanel with the Ext.ux.RowEditor plugin. Four fields exist in the row editor: port, ip address, subnet and DHCP. If the DHCP field (checkbox) of the selected row is checked, I need to make the other three fields un-editable. I've been trying to perform this code when the beforeedit event is triggered, but to no avail... I've only found ways to make the entire column un-editable. • MySQLdb not INSERTING, _mysql does fine.

  Okay, I log onto the MySQL command-line client as root. I then open or otherwise run a python app using the MySQLdb module as root. When I check the results using python (IDLE), everything looks fine. When I use the MySQL command-line client, no INSERT has occurred. If I change things around to _mysql instead of MySQLdb, everything works fine. I'd appreciate any clarification(s). • CRM plugin to execute when opportunity is reopened

  I need to write a plugin for Dynamics CRM 4.0 that executes when a closed opportunity is reopened in order to change the salesstagecode. My questions are: When I register a new step to the plugin, what attribute(s) should I filter on? What property on the entity should I check the value of? and What should I look for the value of this entity to be so I can determine if the plugin execution should continue? I've typically written asynchronous workflows and my experience writing plugins is still developing, so I'd appreciate any help and clarification that can be offered. • ASP.NET control event handler not firing on postback?

  I have a control which has an ImageButton which is tied to an OnClick event... Upon clicking this control, a postback is performed and the event handler is not called. AutoEventWireup is set to true, and I've double checked spelling etc.... We haven't touched this control in over a year and it has been working fine until a couple of weeks ago. We have made changes to controls which load this control... so I'm wondering, what kind of changes could we have made to stop this event handler from being called? There is quite a bit of Javascript going on, so this could be the culprit too... Edit: Some clarification... we are dynamically loading the parent control of the ImageButton in the OnLoad event of the page... if that makes sense.

• Which C# 4.0 Book would you purchase, and why?

  I'm currently looking at purchasing a few C# 4.0 books, namely: Essential C# 4.0 by Mark Michaelis or C# 4.0 Unleashed by Bart De Smet. I am aware that both books are yet to be released, but would you consider purchasing either of these books, or would you recommend another? Thanks for your time. Clarification: I'm not a .net Ninja, but I do have 8+ years experience with the framework & related languages. So I'm generally looking for in-depth books. I also train/instruct the rest of my organisation generally 6 - 12 months after each .net release. Each of the developers I train has the same or more .net experience then myself. • Change color of text within a RichTextBox in C#

  I have a RichTextBox that I write a string to every time I click a Form button. The string ends with a newline so each time I add a string, it appends to the bottom of the RichTextBox. Each string begins with the string "Long" or "Short" and ends with Environment.NewLine. I'd like to color each line red if it beings with "Long" and blue if it begins with "Short". How can I do this? • How do I format positional argument help using Python's optparse?

  As mentioned in the docs the optparse.OptionParser uses an IndentedHelpFormatter to output the formatted option help, for which which I found some API documentation. I want to display a similarly formatted help text for the required, positional arguments in the usage text. Is there an adapter or a simple usage pattern that can be used for similar positional argument formatting? Clarification Preferably only using the stdlib. Optparse does great except for this one formatting nuance, which I feel like we should be able to fix without importing whole other packages. :-)

  Hello again. I am wondering if anyone has used the userInteractionEnabled method on a UILabel to allow the label to act like a button (or just to fire off a method). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers! Update (4/30/09 @1:07pm) Clarification: I have a standard InfoButton and next to it I want to place a label with the text "settings" and I would like the label to function like the button (which flips over to a settings screen. So, basically I need to tie the already defined showSettinsView to the "infoLabel" label; a user clicks on the infoButton or infoLabel and the method fires off. The infoButton is already working and is using an IBAction to trigger the method. I would like to know how to wire up the label to implement the same method. That is all. Cheers!

• Ideal Java library for cleaning html, and escaping malformed fragments

  I've got some HTML files that need to be parsed and cleaned, and they occasionally have content with special characters like <, , ", etc. which have not been properly escaped. I have tried running the files through jTidy, but the best I can get it to do is just omit the content it sees as malformed html. Is there a different library that will just escape the malformed fragments instead of omitting them? If not, any recommendations on what library would be easiest to modify? Clarification: Sample input: <p> blah blah <M+1> blah </p> Desired output: <p> blah blah &lt;M+1&gt; blah </p>

• EXC_BAD_ACCESS when not using self.

  I got nabbed by the following bug again and would like some clarification to exactly why it is a bug. I have a simple UITableView that loads some data: // myclass.h @property (nonatomic, retain) NSArray *myData // myclass.m @synthesize myData; - (void) viewDidLoad { ... myData = someDataSource // note the lack of self } - (UITableViewCell *) cellForRowAtIndexPath ... { ... cell.textLabel.text = [self.myData objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; // EXC_BAD_ACCESS } The table first loads fine, but when scrolling up enough that one of the cells is totally out of the view I then get the EXC_BAD_ACCESS error. Am I missing something in regards to @property retain. My understanding is that it releases anything that the pointer was previously pointing to before the reassignment. If I am correct then why would not using self. cause any problems? Thanks for the help.

• Editing a BrowserField's History

  I have a BrowserField in my app, which works great. It intercept NavigationRequests to links on my website which go to external sites, and brings up a new windows to display those in the regular Browser, which also works great. The problem I have is that if a user clicks a link to say "www.google.com", my app opens that up in a new browser, but also logs it into the BrowserHistory. So if they click back, away from google, they arrive back at my app, but then if they hit back again, the BrowserHistory would land them on the same page they were on (Because going back from Google doesn't move back in the history) I've tried to find a way to edit the BrowserField's BrowserHistory, but this doesn't seem possible. Short of creating my own class for logging the browsing history, is there anything I can do? If I didn't do a good job explaining the problem, don't hesitate for clarification. Thanks

• Building elf within Eclipse within Windows

  Hey guys, I'm having trouble building an Elf file within Eclipse within Windows. It seems that everytime I build, a PE / portable executable for windows is created. I've gone into the Binary Parser section and checked Elf Parser while making sure that everything else is unchecked. However, I continue to end up with a PE which I cannot run on Linux. For clarification, I'm using the Linux GCC toolchain within Eclipse. I've attempted a reinstall of Cygwin -- still experiencing the same issues. Any ideas? Thanks

  First off, I'd like to say that I'm already looking into the "Cutting Stock Problem" algorithm, however I feel that I need a bit more clarification, and possibly some help with some of the math (Not my strong point).   Refering to this question I asked a while ago: UI functionality modeling languages It looks like there is no good-enough solution. I decided to develop one. (and prepare a set of elements for DIA or something) I'm sure it will require a good insight in peoples' experiences and problems in designing functionally complicated GUIs. I've got some ideas already, but I'd like to hear from You what You'd expect from a GUI functionality modelling language. Clarification: It's functionality modelling, so it's not about where I put a button. It's about objects that have some events binded, and the interface behaviour logic. If You think (just as I do) that UML is far from useful for such purposes - feel free to put Your expectations here. I'll try to meet them. • SQL multiple primary keys - localization

  I am trying to implement some localization in my database. It looks something like this (prefixes only for clarification) tbl-Categories ID Language Name tbl-Articles ID CategoryID Now, in my tbl-Categories, I want to have primary keys spanning ID and language, so that every combination of ID and language is unique. In tbl-Articles I would like a foreign key to reference ID in categories, but not Language, since I do not want to bind an article to a certain language, only category. Of course, I cannot add a foreign key to part of the primary key. I also cannot have the primary key only on the ID of categories, since then there can only be one language. Having no primary keys disables foreign keys altogether, and that is also not a great solution. Do you have any ideas how I can solve this in an elegant fashion? Thanks.
