• How to get dataset to populate data into dbgrid in Delphi 6?

  I have created a DBGrid in Delphi 6 and tied it to a DataSource contained in a DataModule. The Dataset for that source in also located in the same module. In the OnShow event for the form, I activate the dataset and set a label equal to the rowcount for the dataset. This shows several hundred rows but nothing shows in the dbgrid. If I activate the dataset in the IDE, the grid populates with the expected data. Does anyone have any idea why this behaviour would change between the IDE and normal runtime? We are also using SDAC connection components. All 3rd party component choices are not mine to change. I can elaborate as necessary for clarification, but I mainly need troubleshooting ideas to start at.

Must have: Projects - ability to add people & tasks and schedule tasks to people Calendar - showing when people are busy or available Role based access - Admins and non-admins History - ability to look back at all history Anyone seen a product that's worth a look? Clarification: Must be hosted i.e. not require my own hardware or IT staff I'm looking for an app to schedule people with specific tasks at specific times and monitor the outcomes. I'm already using Mingle (for stories), Basecamp (to run the business) and Exceptional (to track bugs). I'm not looking for a bug-tracking system or a story management application (I already looked at VersionOne, but chose Mingle due to it's nicer UI) My response to the answer being auto-selected: I still don't feel the answer (chosen for me) is the correct one. It's a useful list but little more, and doesn't provide the solution I was seeking.

• Forward declaring an enum in c++

  Hi guys, I'm trying to do something like the following: enum E; void Foo(E e); enum E {A, B, C}; which the compiler rejects. I've had a quick look on Google and the consensus seems to be "you can't do it", but I can't understand why. Can anyone explain? Many thanks. Clarification 2: I'm doing this as I have private methods in a class that take said enum, and I do not want the enum's values exposed - so, for example, I do not want anyone to know that E is defined as enum E { FUNCTIONALITY_NORMAL, FUNCTIONALITY_RESTRICTED, FUNCTIONALITY_FOR_PROJECT_X } as project X is not something I want my users to know about. So, I wanted to forward declare the enum so I could put the private methods in the header file, declare the enum internally in the cpp, and distribute the built library file and header to people. As for the compiler - it's GCC.

• multi-row update table with "different" data

  I think the best way to explain this is to tell you what I have. I have two tables A and B both have columns Field1 and Field2. However Field 2 is not populated in table B I want to populate field 2 of table B with field 2 of table A where field 1 of table A matches field 1 of table B. something like update tableB set Field2 = tableA.field2 where tablea.field1 = tableb.field1. The reason this may seem so odd and obscure is that I'm tyring to do an inital data load form an old database to a new one. please let me know if you need clarification

• SVN correct directory structure

  I followed this tutorial to setup SVN on my Fedora box http://www.ashishkulkarni.com/installing-subversion-on-fedora-linux/ It worked. However, there is no trunk, tags or branches when I set this up. In the tutorial he creates a sandbox project /svn/repos/sandbox Now I am assuming that all projects will go under repos /svn/repos/project1 /svn/repos/project2 When I view the project there are no trunk, tags or branches, I have not yet checked in any project, will these appear when I do that? As I understand all my files should go below the trunk. What are the tags and branches for? Just some clarification about the structure would be nice. Thanks.

• Is there anything wrong with taking immediate actions in constructors?

  I have classes like this one: class SomeObject { public function __construct($param1, $param2) { $this->process($param1, $param2); } ... } So I can instantly "call" it as some sort of global function just like new SomeObject($arg1, $arg2); which has the benefits of staying concise, being easy to understand, but might break unwritten rules of semantics by not waiting till a method is called. Should I continue to feel bad because of a bad practice, or there's really nothing to worry about? Clarification: I do want an instance of the class. I do use internal methods of the class only. I initialize the object in the constructor, but call the "important" action-taker methods too. I am selfish in the light of these sentences.

• Where do I put constants file for Codeigniter (PHP)?

  I have a list of constants (I'm using them as an enum), some are define statements, and some are just global variables. Where am I suppose to put them in the MVC framework so I can use them for both my model and my controller that needs to reference it? I'd rather not stick it into config/constants.php since they shouldn't be called except for by this model and the controllers that use it. Edit 1: Clarification To be more specific, I have my message_model model and it has a bunch of constants that I need that are stored in message_model_constants.php. Where should I put message_model_constants.php and is there a way to have it automatically included by the controller that loads message_model when message_model is not (and I don't want it to be) auto-loaded. Edit 2: I really don't want to have the constants auto-loaded except for when I use the model

• Confusion between JPA and Hibernate cascading

  I'm using Hibernate 3.6 and have my code annotated (versus using hibernate mapping files). I ran into the known "problem" of using JPA cascading options that are not compatible with Hibernate's CascadeType (see this link for more info http://www.mkyong.com/hibernate/cascade-jpa-hibernate-annotation-common-mistake/). I was hoping to get a bit more clarification on the problem. I have some particular questions: 1) So @Cascade({CascadeType.SAVE_UPDATE}) works for saveOrUpdate(), but does it apply also if I use merge() or persist()? or do I have to use all three Hibernate CascadeTypes? 2) How do I decide whether to use JPA cascade options or the Hibernate @Cascade annotation instead? 2) There is a "bug" filed against this in Hibernate, but the developers apparently see this as a documentation issue, (I'm completely disagree with them), and I'm not seeing that it was addressed in said documentation. Anyone know why this is "working as designed" and not a bug in Hibernate's JPA implementation? Many thanks in advance.

• Delphi: How to localize description for a menu shortcut?

  Is there a way to get a localized description of a shortcut like Ctrl+Z so that I get "Ctrl+Z" if the app runs on an English system and "Strg+Z" on a German system? The VCL function ShortCutToText isn't internationalized. The API function GetKeyNameText is a bit better but still not perfect: If one switches the regional settings of a German XP to English (US), it still produces German texts. Besides the results are in CAPITALS which is ugly. Clarification: I know how I can replace ShortCutToText or the Smkc* resource strings with customized versions. But to use that I need the translated strings. And I would like to get these from the OS (or similar). Update: It looks like Microsoft expects developers to do the translation on their own - see 2. in Associating a Menu Item with an Accelerator Key.

• Homework - C# - Creating an object instance with a button click

  I'm new to learning Windows Programming with C#. My current assignment is to create a very simple bank account program: The user enters the accountholder name, account number and beginning balance, then presses a "Continue" button to work with that account by making deposits and withdrawals. I wrote a separate "BankAccount" class with the required data members and methods. I've put the code for the creation of the BankAccount object in the Continue button click event BankAccount currentAccount = new BankAccount(acctName, acctNum, beginningBalance); But that seems to make it local to that method only, and currentAccount is not recognized when I'm programming the click event for the "Record Transactions" (deposits and withdrawals) button. How and where should the creation of the BankAccount object be coded in order for it to be created when the "Continue" button is clicked and also recognized in the "Record Transactions" button click event? Please let me know if any clarification is needed, or if you need to see part or all of my code.

  I'm creating some pagination for my website, and want to use an input-element to navigate between pages. Like the following example: The input would require the "return" key to be hit for the script to trigger. If the value entered is not within range and alert would trigger. e.g. If there was 32 pages, "Please enter a value between 1 and 32" Can this be done using jQuery or javascript, by detecting the value change within the range of pages and redirecting to that page? • How can you stream results as json string downloads?

  I'm interested in presenting results faster in my mobile app. Is it possible to stream results out as the string downloads? I'm thinking about implementing an IObservable to push out the results as they are downloaded, but I don't know what algorithm to use to properly piece together the data which could be incomplete at any given point. Hope that was clear enough. CLARIFICATION: Guess it wasn't clear enough. My issue is the string downloaded is quite long. It can often take 15-20 seconds or more to download. I want to reflect changes faster to my user, so I would like to use reactive extensions to pump out entities as soon as a complete one is received. My issue is I dont know how to build the parser that can pick out complete entities from an incomplete response string.

  I have two related tables: Groups and Clients. Clients belongs to Groups so I have a foreign key "group_id" that references the group a client belongs to. I'm changing the Group id from an autoincrement to a UUID. So what I need is to generate a UUID for each Group and update the Clients table at once to reflect the changes and keep the records related. Is there a way to do this with multiple-table update on MySQL? Adding tables definitions for clarification.   I understand how declared properties work - I just need a clarification on when Objective C is using the accessor method vs. when it is not. Say I have a property declared using retain: @property (nonatomic, retain) NSDate *date; ... and later... @synthesize date If I say: date = x Is that calling the accessor method? Or is it just setting the variable? self.date = x This seems to call the accessor method (I think but I'm not sure, since it seems like the retain count is increasing). Can anyone clarify this issue? I'm curious because i have some variables that seem to become invalid before I need them (and I have to specifically call retain), and I suspect this is why.

  I'm iterating through the controls in a dialog and I'm trying to determine if a combobox was created with the WS_VSCROLL style. The style, obtained from GetWindowLong(hwnd, GWL_STYLE), doesn't contain the WS_VSCROLL bit (0x200000), even when I know it was set on create. Clarification: I am looking to see if the ComboBox was created with the WS_VSCROLL style. Calling GetWindowLong() (or using spy++) to get the style of the combo's listbox will include WS_VSCROLL if a scrollbar is needed to based on the current contents of the list. I am trying to determine if the ComboBox was created with WS_VSCROLL, not if a scrollbar is currently visible.

• Fastest method in merging of the two: dicts vs lists

  I'm doing some indexing and memory is sufficient but CPU isn't. So I have one huge dictionary and then a smaller dictionary I'm merging into the bigger one: big_dict = {"the" : {"1" : 1, "2" : 1, "3" : 1, "4" : 1, "5" : 1}} smaller_dict = {"the" : {"6" : 1, "7" : 1}} #after merging resulting_dict = {"the" : {"1" : 1, "2" : 1, "3" : 1, "4" : 1, "5" : 1, "6" : 1, "7" : 1}} My question is for the values in both dicts, should I use a dict (as displayed above) or list (as displayed below) when my priority is to use as much memory as possible to gain the most out of my CPU? For clarification, using a list would look like: big_dict = {"the" : [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]} smaller_dict = {"the" : [6,7]} #after merging resulting_dict = {"the" : [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]} Side note: The reason I'm using a dict nested into a dict rather than a set nested in a dict is because JSON won't let me do json.dumps because a set isn't key/value pairs, it's (as far as the JSON library is concerned) {"a", "series", "of", "keys"} Also, after choosing between using dict to a list, how would I go about implementing the most efficient, in terms of CPU, method of merging them?   OK so I have two tables, MEDIA and BUSINESS. I want it set up so the forms to input into them are on the same page. MEDIA has a row that is biz_id that is the id of BUSINESS. So MEDIA is really a part of BUSINESS. HOW do I insert/add these into their tables without a common ID because I haven't yet made the record for business? I'm sorry I didn't really word this very much... You might need more clarification to answer properly and I'll be glad to give any more info. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

What will happen if I do this? @interface MyClass : NSObject /* or any other class */ { int ivar_; } @end @implementation MyClass - (id)init { ivar_ = 12345; if ((self = [super init])) { NSLog(@"ivar_'s value is %d", ivar_); } return self; } @end In the case when [super init] returns a new instance, what will I see in the console? ivar_'s value is 0? I can't think of a way to check this myself, because I don't know which class may return a new instance from its init method. Also, can't seem to find explicit clarification for this scenario in the docs. Could anyone help me out? Thanks!

• Need some pointers/hints in writing a Windows Application

  Hi, I want to create applications in windows that has complete portability (within windows OSes of course). I have tried using one application written in Visual C++ but I had a real tough time in making it run in other windows OS (like it required .net framework libraries to be installed). This put me on the back foot because I had to copy a set of DLLs from one machine to another and most of the time something works some does not. And I am TOTAL amateur in writing windows based applications since my technological forte is mostly Java. Where to kick off? (like which tools/IDEs to begin with since I am seriously into writing my own utilities/tools). I am open to clarification should you guys feel my question is vague/blunt. Thanks.

• Splitting values into groups evenly

  Let me try to explain the situation the best I can. Lets say I have 3 values 1, 2, 3 I tell an algorithm to split this values into x columns. Lets say x = 2 for clarification. The algorithm determines that the group of values is best put into two columns the following way. 1st column 2nd column --------------------------- 1 3 2 Each column has an even number (totals, not literals) value. Now lets say I have the following values 7, 8, 3, 1, 4 I tell the algorithm that I want the values split into 3 columns. The algorithm now tells me that the following is the best fit. 1st column 2nd column 3rd column 8 7 3 1 4 Notice how the columns arent quiet even, but it is as close as it can get. A little over and a little under is considered ok, as long as the list is AS CLOSE TO EVEN AS IT CAN BE. Anybody got any suggestions? Know any good methods of doing this?

  Hey everyone, Using C#, I need to do some extra work if function A() was called right before function C(). If any other function was called in between A() and C() then I don't want to do that extra work. Any ideas that would require the least amount of code duplication? I'm trying to avoid adding lines like "flag = false;" into every function B1..BN. Here is a very basic example: bool flag = false; void A() { flag = true; } void B1() { ... } void B2() { ... } void C() { if (flag) { //do something } } The above example was just using a simple case but I'm open to using something other than booleans. The important thing is that I want to be able to set and reset a flag of sorts so that C() knows how to behave accordingly. Thank you for your help. If you require clarification I will edit my post.
