  • Stop Office 2010 Upload Center Icon from Displaying in the Taskbar

    One of the new features in Office 2010 is the ability to upload your files to Office Web Apps. When you do, an Upload Center icon appears in the Taskbar and helps manage documents. Here’s how to stop it from showing up. If you’re running Office 2010 and upload files to the web, you’ll notice the Microsoft Office Upload Center Icon appears on the Taskbar in the Notification Area. It will stay there even after you’re done uploading the document and closed out of all Office apps. You can use this to monitor and control the documents you’re uploading to the web. Getting rid of it is fairly simple. Right-click the icon and select Settings. When the Microsoft Office Upload Center Settings window appears, under Display Options, uncheck Display icon in notification area and click OK. That is all there is to it…now it will no longer appear in the Taskbar.   After you upload your first document, it will also want to startup with Windows. You can go into msconfig and disable it from automatically starting up. If you need to access it again, it’s part of  Office 2010 Tools which you can access from the Start Menu. Or you can type upload center into the Search box in the Start Menu and hit Enter. If you upload a lot of work to Microsoft Web Apps you might find this tool useful, but if you only occasionally upload docs, you might be annoyed by it always being in the Taskbar.   • Work at Oracle as a Fresh Student by Ang Sun

    The past months have flown by since I started working at Oracle; but at the same time it feels like I’ve been here forever. I came to Beijing to find a job after I graduated from The University of Southampton with a MSc in Software Engineering. I got an offer the next day after I had an interview with my manager. This new style of working life hasn’t been a problem with me. The atmosphere here is fantastic and everyone is so friendly and easy to talk to. I am the first member in our AIE China Team. We do appreciate those colleagues from Core I/O team who helped us a lot to familiarize ourselves with the new environment. After hire orientation training I got to know many new people from various teams including Middleware, People Soft and Solaris. Also Oracle provides weekly system online training as additional training for those people who need it. The best thing about working at Oracle is that there is a balance between work and rest. It’s good to have a really nice park and green space near the Oracle buildings. Most of us like to walk around the riverside after lunch before we get back to work. I like to grab a cup of latte before discussing issues and the schedule of our projects in a weekly conference call with my US colleagues. It has been great experience; I am working alongside talented colleagues from different countries and nationalities.   • Customize the Background in Boxee

    Are you a Boxee user who thinks the default background is little boring? Today we’ll take a look at how to freshen up the look of Boxee by changing the background. Boxee Background When you log into Boxee, select the Settings button at the upper left corner of the Home page.   Select General on the Settings screen. When you select or hover your mouse over the Background Image button, you’ll see options to set a background image or set a background image folder. You’ll have the option of settings a single static image as your background, or choosing an images folder.   If you choose a folder, Boxee will rotate through the images in the folder. To set Background images folder, select that option. Browse for your image folder.. And then select OK.   Boxee will rotate through the images in the folder.   Images will change every ten seconds.   If you prefer a single static image, select Set background image   Choose a image and select OK. Now just enjoy you nice new backgrounds.   If you ever wish to revert back to the default Boxee background, simply select Reset Images on the Settings \ General screen. Adding your own backgrounds is a nice way to customize your Boxee experience. Ideally, you’ll want to choose high resolution images and images oriented as landscape rather than portrait.   • Split Internet Explorer into Dual-Panes

    If you have a wide screen monitor then you may want to make better use of Internet Explorer’s browser window area. Now you can split the browser window into dual-panes as needed with the IE Split browser plugin. Note: Requires .NET Framework 2.0 or higher (link provided below). IE Split in Action If you are using an older version of this software here is something to keep in mind before upgrading to the 2.0 release. Once you have installed IE Split you will notice a new toolbar added to your browser. As seen here, you can condense it down tightly and access it using the drop-down bar. A closer look at the drop-down bar. Notice the address bar…this will be for the left pane when you split the browser window. Here is our browser split into dual-panes. There are two address bars and two tab/title bars each corresponding to their appropriate pane. It may look slightly backwards at first but is not hard to get used to. A better view of the left pane with the IE Split navigation & title bars showing. Note: The title bar can be hidden if desired. And the right pane. You can also have multiple “split” tabs open if needed. There is nothing quite like getting double the value for the same amount of space. When you no longer need dual-panes open just click on the “x” to close IE Split down. All back to normal again. Conclusion While might not be for everyone this can still be useful for those who need side-by-side access to websites without using multiple separate windows.     I am Jannie Minnema, Director of Business Operations for Oracle in the Benelux. My career at Oracle started at Oracle Headquartes in San Francisco as a Project Manager, building Computer Based Training Products. After spending 3 years in Dubai, my husband and I moved to the USA as he wanted to study a MBA there. This move kick started my career as I was working in Silicon Valley during a time of great opportunity. After the USA, I fulfilled numerous roles at Oracle ranging from Project Management to Sales and Marketing. I currently work in the Netherlands were I am now Director of Business Operations for Oracle in the Benelux and a member of the Dutch Management Team. Business Operations advises the Benelux Management Team and focuses on topics such as Corporate Social Responsibility, Customer Satisfaction, Internal Communication, Internal training and effective usage of Sales Tools and Systems. We are currently also working on how best to introduce a “New way of Working”. The move to our new office building in 2011 aides in creating the right environment for this. Our goal is to continually improve the organisation. I enjoy working for Oracle because there is never a dull moment, and I am continuously challenged to improve.   • Setting up port forwarding for 7000 appliance VM in VirtualBox

    I've been using the 7000 appliance VM for a lot of testing lately and relied on others to set up the networking for the VM for me, but finally, I decided to take the dive and do it myself.  After some experimenting, I came up with a very brief number of steps to do this all using the VirtualBox CLI instead of the GUI. First download the VM image and unpack it somewhere.  I put it in /var/tmp. Then, set your VBOX_USER_HOME to some place with lots of disk space and import the VM: export VBOX_USER_HOME=/var/tmp/MyVirtualBoxVBoxManage import /var/tmp/simulator/vbox-2011.1.0.0.1.1.8/Sun\ ZFS\ Storage\ 7000.ovf (go get a cup of tea...) Then, set up port forwarding of the VM appliance BUI and shell:First set up port as NAT:VBoxManage modifyvm Sun_ZFS_Storage_7000 --nic1 nat Then set up rules for port forwarding (pick some unused port numbers):VBoxManage modifyvm Sun_ZFS_Storage_7000 --natpf1 "guestssh,tcp,,4622,,22"VBoxManage modifyvm Sun_ZFS_Storage_7000 --natpf1 "guestbui,tcp,,46215,,215" Verify the settings using:VBoxManage showvminfo Sun_ZFS_Storage_7000 | grep -i nic Start the appliance:$ VBoxHeadless --startvm Sun_ZFS_Storage_7000 & Connect to it using your favorite RDP client.  I use a Sun Ray, so I use the Sun Ray Windows Connector client: $ /opt/SUNWuttsc/bin/uttsc -g 800x600 -P <portnumber> <your-hostname> & The portnumber is displayed in the output of the --startvm command.(This did not work after I updated to VirtualBox 4.1.12, so maybe at this point, you need to use the VirtualBox GUI.) It takes a while to first bring up the VM, so please be patient. The longest time is in loading the smf service descriptions, but fortunately, that only needs to be done the first time the VM boots.  There is also a delay in just booting the appliance, so give it some time. Be sure to set the NIC rule on only one port and not all ports otherwise there will be a conflict in ports and it won't work. After going through the initial configuration screen, you can connect to it using ssh or your browser: ssh -p 45022 root@<your-host-name> https://<your-host-name>:45215 BTW, for the initial configuration, I only had to set the hostname and password.  The rest of the defaults were set by VirtualBox and seemed to work fine.

  • Quickly Copy Movie Files to Individually Named Folders

    Some HTPC media manager applications require movie files to be in stored in separate folders to properly store information such as cover art images and other metadata. Here we look at copying movie files to individual folders. If you already have a large movie collection stored in a single folder, we’ll show you how to quickly move those files into their own individually named folders. File2Folder FIle2folder is a handy portable app that automatically creates and moves movie files into a folder of the same filename. There is no installation needed. Simply download and run the .exe file (link below). Enter the current movie directory, or browse for the folder. File2folder now supports both local and network shares. When you are ready to create the folders and move the files, click Move! You’ll see the move progress displayed in the window. When the process is finished, you’ll have all your movie file in individual folders.   Change your mind? Just click the Undo! button…   …and the move and folder creation process will be undone. If you would like to have the folder monitored for new files, click the Start button. File2folder will process any new files it discovers every 180 seconds. To turn it off, click Stop. This simple little program is a huge timesaver for those looking to organize movie collections for their HTPC. We should also note that this will work with any files, not just videos.     I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 64bit. I'm using HTTP proxy over ssh as mentioned here. If I do not start TinyProxy, everything is OK. But, when I start TinyProxy, I'm getting the following.     How can I try CoffeeScript on Windows? The installation instructions are only for *nix: http://jashkenas.github.com/coffee-script/#installation EDIT: I don't think I need node.js -- I am just writing javascript for web pages, (using some jQuery, etc)...So all I really want is simple way to write CoffeeScript and "compile" it down to JavaScript. Isn't there a Ruby program that would do it? Or even better, a windows exe? (i dont use ASP.NET either...i use Python/Django) FINAL EDIT: Thanks for the help -- In the end I installed VirtualBox and created a virtual Linux machine which I now use to program coffeescript with node.js. (It was surprisingly easy to start using VirtualBox -- easier than doing the Cygwin thing). I run jEdit (for which you can get a CoffeeScript syntax highlighter) and I put the corresponding js file side-by-side with the coffeescript file. When I compile the coffeescript to js, the editor automatically re-loads the new javascript, which allows me to check that it has compiled the way I expect (which is a good thing while learning the coffeescript syntax).

I'm very passionate about programming and I constantly strive to hone my programming skills by reading blogs, solving Project euler questions, learning new technologies, developing small apps etc;. But I find it very difficult to manage my time. Working for 12 hrs a day in office leaves me stressed out and spend my weekends with my family. So i hardly have like 5-6 hrs per week to actually work on something of my interest which will help me improve. How do you manage time so that you find time to improve your current standing? EDIT: 12 hours includes 1hour of travel & 1 hr of break(lunch/coffee). Effectively I work for 10 hours per day in office which is mandated by my organization. -Snehal

If you don't stare at boring stuff on the monitor for 8 hours straight, co-workers suspect you being a slacker. Yes, not the managers who see the output. Only the co-workers who see the process and can't relate to this kind of work. Yesterday I had to explain to a trainee of some other profession that software development is like flying.     this seems to be a reoccurring issue: we receive a bug report for our software and with it tons of traces or logfiles. since finding errors is much easier when having a visualization of the log messages/events over time it is convenient to use a tool that can display the progression of events in a graph etc. (e.g. wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org) for analyzing network traffic) what tool do you use for such a purpose? the problem with most tools i used so far is that they mercilessly break down when you feed them huge data traces ( 1GB) so some criteria for such a tool would be: can deal with huge input files ( 1 GB) is really fast (so you don't have to get coffee while a file is loading) has some sort of filtering mechanism

  • Starting airplay from command line, to send output of 'Say' Mac OS X command to airplay

    Ok, Sunday question :) Trying to make a little joke... 1) if you open a terminal, and type "say -a ?", Mac OS X will give you the list of devices it can send spoken words to. On mine, it says: 39 AirPlay 47 Built-in Output 2) I have a Denon airplay-ready received in my living room and I'm trying to send spoken words to my wife downstairs... I can send music without any problem using iTunes so, from an infrastructure standpoint, I'm all set. 3) I want my computer to say (out of the blue) "Honey, why don't you bring me a cup of coffee". I can make it say that locally on my internal laptop speakers, but I can't seem to send that to device 39 successfully. I am suspecting that there are a few other things that need to be setup before it works, i.e. setting up airplay output to "denon", maybe opening a channel and reserving it. I don't know. Has anyone played with this? Is there a way to setup airplay from the command line? That would be awesome :)

    Hi All! this is my very first time here! so nice to meet you guys! ;-) When i was starting with this job, ( when i have chosed of doing this for the rest of my life) i have thinked also, one day, before or after, i would become blind or at least sick by drinking 5 or more coffee per day and of course by sitting down on my pc for hours!!! ;-\ From many years now, i'm asking myself how my eyes can stay in front o the monitor for so many hours per day!? well now i'm to a point of no return!!! i feel my eyes each day more tired, and my productivity is waning, but i can't change work now and i don't want do this!!!! what i need to do for prevent this to become a more serious problem for me and for my eyes!? any suggestion will be really appreciated!!!     I have a set of three values, call them x, y, and z. If value A happens to match only one in the set x, y, and z, then that means we have a proper match and we stop searching for a match, even if it is at y. It can match any one in that set. These values x, y, and z are non-constant so I cannot use a switch-case statement. How do I do this with an if-elseif-else statements without having to use GOTO. I am using C++ (no boost or any of that other fancy stuff). Now, I am trying to do this in code and it is racking my brain this morning (not enough coffee?)

Let's say I have a Business Model, this model contains :name, :address, :phone, :city, :state, :country etc. attributes. Right now I have permalink set up in this model only for :name has_permalink :name So I would get "/biz/name". However I would like to combine the Business name, city, and a incremental number if there are more than 1 location in the city for that business. For example I would like to use: "/biz/joes-coffee-shack-chicago" for the permalink or if a multple location business "/biz/starbucks-chicago-92" Is this possible with the current permalink_fu plugin or some fork of permalink_fu? Or will this require some modification to the permalink_fu plugin?

  • SSL confirmation dialog popup auto closes in IE8 when re-accessing a JNLP file

    I'm having this very annoying problem to troubleshoot and have been going at it for way too many days now, so have a go at it. The Environment We have 2 app-servers, which can be located on either the same machine or 2 different machines, and use the same signing certificate, and host 2 different web-apps. Though let's say, for the sake of our study case here, that they are on the same physical machine. So, we have: https://company.com/webapp1/ https://company.com/webapp2/ webapp1 is GWT-based rich-client which contains on one of its screens a menu with an item that is used to invoke a Java WebStart Client located on webapp2. It does so by performing a simple window.open call via this GWT call: Window.open("https://company.com/webapp2/app.jnlp", "_blank", null); Expected Behavior User merrilly goes to webapp1 User navigates to menu entry to start the WebStart app and clicks on it browser fires off a separate window/dialog which, depending on the browser and its security settings, will: request confirmation to navigate to this secure site, directly download the file, and possibly auto-execute a javaws process if there's a file association, otherwise the user can simply click on the file and start the app (or go about doing whatever it takes here). If you close the app, close the dialog, and re-click the menu entry, the same thing should happen again. Actual Behavior On Anything but God-forsaken IE 8 (Though I admit there's also all the god-forsaken pre-IE8 stuff, but the Requirements Lords being merciful we have already recently managed to make them drop these suckers. That was close. Let's hold hands and say a prayer of gratitude.) Stuff just works. JNLP gets downloaded, app executes just fine, you can close the app and re-do all the steps and it will restart happily. People rejoice. Puppies are safe and play on green hills in the sunshine. Developers can go grab a coffee and move on to more meaningful and rewarding tasks, like checking out on SO questions. Chrome doesn't want to execute the JNLP, but who cares? Customers won't get RSI from clicking a file every other week. On God-forsaken IE8 On the first visit, the dialog opens and requests confirmation for the user to continue to webapp2, though it could be unsafe (here be dragons, I tell you). The JNLP downloads and auto-opens, the app start. Your breathing is steady and slow. You close the app, close that SSL confirmation dialog, and re-click the menu entry. The dialog opens and auto-closes. Nothing starts, the file wasn't downloaded to any known location and Fiddler just reports the connection was closed. If you close IE and reach that menu item to click it again, it is now back to working correctly. Until you try again during the same session, of course. Your heart-rate goes up, you get some more coffee to make matters worse, and start looking for plain tickets online and a cheap but heavy golf-club on an online auction site to go clubbing baby polar seals to avenge your bloodthirst, as the gates to the IE team in Redmond are probably more secured than an ice block, as one would assume they get death threats often. Plus, the IE9 and IE10 teams are already hard at work fxing the crap left by their predecessors, so maybe you don't want to be too hard on them, and you don't have money to waste on a PI to track down the former devs responsible for this mess. Added Details I have come across many problems with IE8 not downloading files over SSL when it uses a no-cache header. This was indeed one of our problems, which seems to be worked out now. It downloads files fine, webapp2 uses the following headers to serve the JNLP file: response.setHeader("Cache-Control", "private, must-revalidate"); // IE8 happy response.setHeader("Pragma", "private"); // IE8 happy response.setHeader("Expires", "0"); // IE8 happy response.setHeader("Access-Control-Allow-Origin", "*"); // allow to request via cross-origin AJAX response.setContentType("application/x-java-jnlp-file"); // please exec me As you might have inferred, we get some confirmation dialog because there's something odd with the SSL certificate. Unfortunately I have no control over that. Assuming that's only temporary and for development purposes as we usually don't get our hands on the production certs. So the SSL cert is expired and doesn't specify the server. And the confirmation dialog. Wouldn't be that bad if it weren't for IE, as other browsers don't care, just ask for confirmation, and execute as expected and consistantly. Please, pretty please, help me, or I might consider sacrificial killings as an option. And I think I just found a decently prized stainless steel golf-club, so I'm right on the edge of gore. Side Notes Might actually be related to IE8 window.open SSL Certificate issue. Though it doesn't explain why the dialog would auto-close (that really is beyong me...), it could help to not have the confirmation dialog and not need the dialog at all. For instance, I was thinking that just having a simple URL in that menu instead of have it entirely managed by GWT code to invoke a Window.open would solve the problem. But I don't have control on that menu, and also I'm very curious how this could be fixed otherwise and why the hell it happens in the first place...

    Is there a way to tag open graph actions so as to target certain recipients and not others? For example, if my app talks about new coffee shop openings in various cities, is there a way to publish the 'opening' action to the graph, perhaps with location / coordinates, such that this is only seen by friends in that locality? I really don't want to spam my friends in London about an opening I'm excited about in Portland. How can I help facebook with the feed relevance in these cases? I noticed that there is a "place" property on open graph objects - could this somehow be used?

  • Identifying PHP unused variables (in Emacs)?

    Is it somehow possible to identify unused variables in a PHP file in Emacs? With other languages, this is possible by using tools such as flymake. I've already enabled Flymake to show syntax errors for my PHP files on the fly, but still it's frustrating that PHP logic errors are sometimes due to situations like: <?php $foo = whatever(); $bar = something($fo); ... Note the typo on $foo that will contribute to the developer's headache and to his exorbitant use of coffee.
