• kde keyboard problems Ubuntu 12.04

  I have Unity & Gnome 3.4 installed successfully. All Dell keyboard keys work perfectly with both. I installed kde - full via terminal. Everything is working great except for the hotkeys. No calculator, no Mute, nothing. I check which keyboard is selected and choose Dell Multimedia USB Keyboard. No luck. How do I get my Dell keyboard to work with kde - the same keyboard that works with Unity & Gnome 3.4. Thanks in advance for any advice.

• What is a good way to keep track of strings for dictionary lookups?

  I am working through the Windows 8 app tutorial. They have some code about saving app data like so: private void NameInput_TextChanged(object sender, TextChangedEventArgs e) { Windows.Storage.ApplicationDataContainer roamingSettings = Windows.Storage.ApplicationData.Current.RoamingSettings; roamingSettings.Values["userName"] = nameInput.Text; } I have worked with C# in the past and found that things like using constant string values (like "userName" in this case) for keys could get messy because auto-complete did not work and it was easy to forget if I had made an entry for a setting before and what it was called. So if I don't touch code for awhile I end up accidentally creating multiple entries for the same value that are named slightly differently. Surely there is a better way to keep track of the strings that key to those values. What is a good solution to this problem?

• ASUS EeePC Fn+F2 ruins wireless until restart

  I managed to get my wireless working beautifully (ath5k driver working great), and it works over a disable/enable wireless cycle, even a suspend/wakeup cycle (read some people have issues with that). Unfortunately, I discovered that if I press Fn+F2 on my keyboard (Asus EeePC 900HA, so that's the wireless toggle key), wireless then stops working until I restart the computer. How can I fix this? I'm running UNR 10.10 (with Unity turned off tyvm!). I heard something about Jupiter controlling these keys, but what about asus-laptop? How can I fix this behaviour? TIA. (Note, I'm a power user, but still fairly new to Linux. I'm picking up speed though).

  I use Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity 2D and I've stumbled upon this issue: sometimes shortcut keys stop working in some windows. For instance, I have these windows opened usually: Google Chrome, Terminal, Skype, Pidgin. Sometimes everything is OK and shortcuts work no matter what window I hit them from, however, hotkeys hit from Skype (more often) or Pidgin (less often) do not work, but they still work from Terminal or Google Chrome. Moreover, not all hotkeys are affected, the problem holds only for locking the computer (Ctrl + Alt + L) and other custom shortcuts like executing some command or launching a program (I used zenity --entry with [Super | Ctrl] + [some letter: K, N, etc] for testing). Does anyone have a clue what is causing the problem and how to fix it?

• Have windows key (meta) trigger Gnome-do instead of Unity Dash (12.04)

  On my laptop the Unity Dash often launches really slowly. I might press the Windows button, and sometimes it will take up to 15 seconds to open, and the system becomes unresponsive during this time. This is especially likely if I haven't opened the launcher in a few hours. I have Gnome-Do installed, and I currently launch it with "Ctrl + Space", and it launches instantly and is very responsive. I would like to swap my shortcut keys, so Meta (the Windows key) launches Gnome Do, but I can't figure out where to change the keyboard shortcut for the dash. Any clues?

• Ctrl-Alt-T doesn't open terminal

  I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 and I've been using for a while now as ran it from a daily build about a month ago. It's fully updated with updates, upgrades an dist-upgrades and it was working up until very recently. Not sure exactly when I last issued a Ctrl+Alt+T as I quite often just leave it running however it will have been certainly in the last week. Basically when I hit that key combo I do not get a terminal. I know that each of the keys function as I can Atl+Tab through open applications and I can Ctrl+C to copy and past Ctrl+V to paste and I've typed plenty here that has a "T" in it. I have checked Keyboard Layout in Settings and the correct combo is assigned to the terminal. You'll have to take my word for that as I'm not allowed to post my screenshot!!!!!

  I recently started using a Kinesis Advantage with my MacBook and one of the things I've really missed since switching from my Apple keyboard is having the functionality of the OS X media keys. I know the Advantage keyboards are pretty customisable but having Googled for quite a while I haven't been able to find any sources saying that it's possible to map the function keys on the Advantage to the appropriate OS X function. Has anyone had any success in getting something like this to work? Any tips would be hugely appreciated.

  When using the home, end, page up and page down movement keys in a text editor, the cursor stays in the same spot, even though the window has moved elsewhere. I know that you can use the option modifier to move the cursor along, but is there a way to move the cursor where your window has moved to (without using the mouse)? Another alternative would be to make these movement keys always behave as if the option modifier key is already pressed. Is this possible?

• Logitech keboard wrong keys under MAC OSX

  I have a Logitech MK250 keyboard I use with my Macbook. One day the "minor/mayor than" and the "back slash" keys flip their functionality, so I have to hit "backslash" to get a "minor than" symbol and press the "alt + minor than" key to get the "backslash". Is there any way to reverse this annoying behavior? I often switch to Windows, where the keys work the expected way, and I'm always missing the right key.

• Arrow keys don't work in htop on OS X in Terminal

  Not sure when it happened, or what I did (if anything), but my arrow keys don't work in htop anymore to scroll around. You should be able to press up and down to scroll up and down the process list, but they don't work. Some keys tend to be the equivalent of 'go back' or something. If I'm on the settings screen, left, up and down all go back to the main screen. htop seems to be the only affected program.

  I am trying to set up SSH to a SCO Unix server that runs custom software that uses the function keys on the keyboard, however the keys do not appear to be in the correct format for SCO to recognise. None of the keyboard options on PuTTY work, including the SCO option. How do I change the keycodes that SCO/bash is looking for when it wants a function key? If it helps, the system is upgrading from Wyse50 terminals. thanks!

However, I have made the following observation: When I generate the key pair on the client and copy the public key to the server everythings works fine. But when I generate the key pair on the server and copy the private key to the client I cannot log in. Can anybody explain to me if and why the keys have to be created on the client?

• Internet Explorer 7 Bugs - incorrect display OR dead links

  Hi, I recently launched a website I have been developing over the past year - http://Live.heritageartpapers.co.uk/. My dad, who owns the company, had a phone call today saying it doesnt display properly in IE7. Bug #1: The header and footer are both in a div, whereas the content is in a table between the two divs. Reportedly the content (table) sometimes (not always, according to IETester) displays below the footer, but the footer still displays where it is supposed to (ie there is a massive gap where the content should fit). Bug #2: When the content does display in the correct place, all the links on the page are dead - click on them and nothing happens. As you can see if you view it in Firefox (the version I am using is 3.6), the links in the left hand menu turn orange on mouseover. However they do not even do this in IE7. Note that they do turn orange and do work if the content is displayed below the footer. I cant see why its happening - according to IETester, the IE7 interpreted source code has all the tags capitalised and many quotes removed (for example for the id attribute on most, if not all, tags) but I doubt this could cause the above bugs, could it? My question is whether anyone has ever seen any of these problems before, and/or has a solution to any of these problems??   Right from Jeff's blog: Software Engineering: Dead? I was utterly floored when I read this new IEEE article by Tom DeMarco (pdf). See if you can tell why. He quotes DeMarco, "I'm gradually coming to the conclusion that software engineering is an idea whose time has come and gone". Further, "What DeMarco seems to be saying -- and, at least, what I am definitely saying -- is that control is ultimately illusory on software development projects." I am writing these lines without context to invoke reading of the related subject. What are the views of the programming community here? I have started to realize that a community wiki is not getting the right amount of participation here. That is the reason I left this question out in the open, while still contemplating a change to CW. It was closed once, and I thought that was the end of it. But, now I see it was reopened and has more answers (all of which I have not yet read). However, I see a lot of CW requests and am forced to reconsider that. This is how I intend to make the CW decision here. There is a comment by Neil Butterworth requesting a CW at 12 upvotes -- "should be community wiki" There is a comment by Lance Roberts requesting no CW at 0 upvotes -- "+1 for not putting it in community wiki" The difference is 12 for a CW request at the moment If this difference becomes 5 more (that is 17), I'll move this question to CW, and it will not return back from there Of course, there is also a close vote at the moment; the question may be closed again.

• Add delay and focus for a dead simple accordion jquery

  I found the code somewhere in the world, and due to its dead simple nature, I found some things in need to fix, like when hovering the trigger, the content is jumping up down before it settled. I have tried to change the trigger from the title of the accordion block to the whole accordion block to no use. I need help to add a delay and only do the accordion when the cursor is focus in the block. I have corrected my css to make sure the block is covering the hidden part as well when toggled.   I'm using an Apple bluetooth keybord to control my Linux synergy server. SSH tunneling, Mouse, Keyboard, and Copy&Paste all work. Linux sees all the media/app keys that are on top of the F# keys correctly. However if I press any of those keys while controlling my OSX client, nothing happens on the client. • Brightness keys adjust brightness too many times

  Every time I hit a brightness key on my laptop's keyboard, it adjusts the brightness by three steps instead of one. How can I fix it so that it only adjusts one step at a time? I am using an Acer Aspire D250 with the newest firmware. It was working better when I was using Ubuntu 10.10 with older firmware (although the scale was off). Any tips on debugging this would be appreciated. • The dreaded Brightness issue (Fn keys + Max brightness)

  I'm trying to get some control over the brightness of my Samsung QX411 (Integrated Intel and discrete Nvidia, though Ubuntu doesn't see the latter yet, I'll play around with Bumblebee later) Using the FN+up/down lowers the screen brightness from max to one peg down or back up. If I try to bring the brightness down any more, it just flickers and stays the same. I can lower the brightness in Settings, but that's delicate and gets reverted to max if I open up the brightness settings again, or log out. The closest I got was adding acpi_backlight=vendor to a line in /etc/default/grub, (source) I could consequently lower the brightness a couple of pegs down to the minimum with FN+down, but then it's as if the problem got inversed, and I'd get stuck in the bottom tier, I could only increase the brightness by one peg and back down. Rebooting would revert to max brightness. acpi_osi=, acpi_osi=Linux, acpi_osi=vendor, acpi_osi='!Windows 2012', acpi_backlight=Linux, acpi_backlight='!Windows 2012' don't do anything for me. I've also tried adding echo 2000 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness to /etc/rc.local, where my max value from cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness is 4648, which didn't do anything. (same result with echo 2000 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness) source Samsung tools also didn't help in this regard. I've spent hours on this, it's getting quite frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How to bind mouse buttons to keys?

  I have a Logitech MX400 Laser Mouse which has 5 buttons + 4 for vertical/horizontal scrolling. I would like it set up so instead of horizontal scrolling pressing right on the scrollwheel will send Ctrl+Tab and left will send Ctrl+Shift+Tab, which will allow me to cycle through tabs in browsers. Also, it would be nice if I could remap the middle button to one of the ones on the side as it is really hard to press down. Another bonus would be if I could write a script that allows me to define what buttons do what dependent on which window is currently active. I have tried using xmodmap but I could only see how to rearrange buttons, not have them send key signals. Thanks in advance.   SQL Server used to have  cool little tool that would let you track your licenses. Microsoft didn’t use it to limit your system or anything, it was just a place on the server where you could put that this system used this license key. I miss those days – we don’t track that any more, and I want to make sure I’m up to date on my licensing, so I made my own. Now, there are a LOT of ways you could do this. You could add an extended property in SQL Server, add a table to a tracking database, use a text file, track it somewhere else, whatever. This is just the route I chose; if you want to use some other method, feel free. Just sharing here. Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk. And this is REALLY important. I include a disclaimer at the end of my scripts, but in this case you’re modifying your registry, and that could be EXTREMELY dangerous – only do this on a test server – and I’m just showing you how I did mine. It isn’t an endorsement or anything like that, and this is a “Buck Woody” thing, NOT a Microsoft thing. See this link first, and then you can read on.   One of the problems that existed in the CTP3 edition of StreamInsight was an error that occurred if you tried to access the grouping key from within your projection expression. That was a real issue as you always need access to the key. It's a bit like using a GROUP BY in TSQL and then not including the columns you're grouping by in the SELECT clause.
