• How to recover deleted NTFS partitions?

  Last night I made a terrible mistake. I was reinstalling Windows and I accidentally deleted all the partitions on all my drives. I realized my mistake before I had created any partitions, so nothing has been written to any of the disks. I'm currently at my wits' end about what I'll do if I don't manage to recover the data. I have two 1TB drives and a 2TB. One of the 1TB was the drive I was supposed to be reformatting so nothing to be recovered there. I am currently in a Linux livecd. In this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/245725 Microsoft advises to recreate the exact same partition but choose not to format it, and then recover the backup boot sector from the end of the ntfs volume. But none of the drives I want to recover are bootable drives. So does that mean I do not need to rewrite the boot sector? As in if I simply recreate a partition of the same size it will see all my data? • smb mount cannot sync file automatically

  Under Ubuntu, I use smb to mount the directory of the server(Ubuntu too), and set to a local directory, like /home/username/server. When I change some files of local directory, the files in the server change too. However, when I change some files of the server, the files in local directory don't change. Does someone know what the reason is ? And could someone fix it and make local changes updated to the server so that I could edit local and make in the server?

• Reset Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) File Permissions -- All Files

  Is their a script or process completely reset all file system file permissions to factory default? (Less restoring from a image backup or reinstalling the OS). This would include I've affected all files from / to Applications and home folder and all contents. (Everything) I've tried to use the Disk Utility's First Aid 'Repair Disk Permissions' but it didn't seem to touch or affect everything - some but not all. I've ran it twice so far... I've seen this but it's not quite the something. Fixing mac user file permissions, not the system The reason for all of this is I accidentally ran a chmod on all files (as sudo). Working too fast, now I'm in a hole.

• What is Causing this IIS 7 Web Service Sporadic Connectivity Error?

  On sporadic occasions we receive the following error when attempting to call an .asmx web service from a .Net client application: "The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server. Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host." By sporadic I mean that it might occur zero, once every few days, or a half-dozen times a day for some users. It will never occur for the first web service call of a user. And the subsequent (usually the same) call will always work immediately after the failure. The failures happen across a variety of methods in the service and usually happens between 15-20 seconds (according to the log) from the time of the request. Looking in the IIS site log for the particular call will show one or the other of the following windows error codes: 121: The semaphore timeout period has elapsed. 1236: The network connection was aborted by the local system. Some additional environment details: Running on internal network web farm consisting of two servers running IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 OS. These problems did not occur when running in an older IIS6 web farm of three servers running on Windows Server 2003 (and we use a single IIS6/2003 instance for our development and staging environments with no issues). EDIT: Also, all of these server instances are VMWare virtual machines, not sure if that is a surprise anymore or not. The web service is a .Net 2.0/3.5 compiled .asmx web service that has its own application pool (.Net 2.0, integrated pipeline). Only has Windows Authentication enabled. We have another web service on the farm that uses the same physical path as the primary service, the only difference being that Basic Authentication is enabled. This is used for a portion of our ERP system. Have tried using the same and different application pool - no effect on the error. This site isn't hit as often as the primary site and has never had an error. As mentioned, the error will only happen when called from the .Net client - not from other applications. The client application is always creating a new web service object for each request and setting the service credentials to System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. The application is either deployed locally to a client or run in a Citrix server session. Those users running in Citrix doesn't seem to experience the issue, only locally deployed clients. The Citrix servers and the web farm are located in the same physical location and are located in the same IP range (10.67.xx.xx). Locally deployed clients experiencing the error are located elsewhere (10.105.xx.xx, 10.31.xx.xx). I've checked the OS logs to see if I can see any problems but nothing really sticks out. EDIT: Actually, I myself just ran into the error a little bit ago. I decided to check out the logs again and saw that there was a Security log entry of "Audit Failure" at the 'same' time (IIS log entry at 1:39:59, event log entry at 1:39:50). Not sure if this is a coincidence or not, I'll have to check out the logs of previous errors. I'm probably grasping for straws but the details: Log Name: Security Source: Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing Date: 7/8/2009 1:39:50 PM Event ID: 5159 Task Category: Filtering Platform Connection Level: Information Keywords: Audit Failure User: N/A Computer: is071019.<**.net Description: The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a bind to a local port. Application Information: Process ID: 1260 Application Name: \device\harddiskvolume1\windows\system32\svchost.exe Network Information: Source Address: 0.0.0.0 Source Port: 54802 Protocol: 17 Filter Information: Filter Run-Time ID: 0 Layer Name: Resource Assignment Layer Run-Time ID: 36 I've also tried to use Failed Request Tracing in IIS7 but the service call never actually gets to where FRT can capture it (even though the failure is logged in the web service log). The network infrastructure group said they checked out the DNS and any NIC settings are correct so there is no 'flapping'. Everything pans out. I'm not sure that they checked out any domain controller servers though to see if that could be an issue. Any ideas? Or any other debugging strategies to get to the bottom of this? I'm just the developer in charge of the software and don't really have the knowledge on what to investigate from the networking side of things - although it does sound like a networking issue to me based on what is happening. • Web Site Serving, Cloud-Computing, oh, my

  I'm planning a software based service. To give it a bit of context (type of traffic), assume it similar to facebook in nature (with a little GitHub thrown in). I've been trying to understand my different hosting options. I've been using a shared host with GoDaddy for years just fine. I currently host a Wordpress web site there and I've not had any problems. Quite frankly, they've taken good care of me. However, the nature of a shared hosting environment is limited in nature. For example, I can't do anything but host a web site there. For example, I can not run a Mercurial server. Last time I attempted to build a web application with the intention of eventually launching it via GoDaddy, I ran in to all sorts of troubles because it was shared-hosted. Assembly issues, etc. At the time, the cost and time sank my project. (The lack of direct access was also frustrating.) (to be fair to godaddy, this was over 3 years ago) I've been looking at Rackspace or Amazon as a possible cloud solution but it seems to be just processing power and bandwidth (and an OS). From what I understand, I'd need to get Apache and MySQL Working on my own. The way cloud hosting is priced, however, seems appealing. I figure my final option might be to use a virtual private host. I think this would be more flexible than a shared-host site but less scalable than a cloud based server. So, I guess my question is what is an appropriate solution for someone who intends to build a web application service? I figure that I need to establish a hosting environment now rather than later so I can plan to effectively use the environment. I'd prefer to be fairly economical to start out with. I really can't afford to pay $999 (or even $99) while I build up the site and get the core functionality online but at the same time, I'd like to have the selected environment grow as needed. • Qmail: relay only from selected servers based on rDNS

  I'm looking for a way to disable Qmail relaying for everyone, but allow one certain group of hosts to do so. These hosts all use the same identifying rDNS entry. In Exchange 2003, Postfix, Exim and cPanel this can be achieved pretty easily. However, the only to do this with Qmail is to do this based on IP's. The IP's however tend to change. These changes can occur at any time, and it is impossible to keep all the servers up-to-date to the new IP's. Running a script that resolves the hostname and whitelists them accordingly is my last-resort option, but this is not fool-proof. Does anyone know whether this is possible and if so, how? Thanks!

• An easily customizable linux distribution using minimal disk space?

  I'm looking for a linux distribution that can be easily used to create my own distribution that's the same system with some software installed. So basically I should be able to create an iso which, when installed, will have the linux distribution with my desired installed. More specifically, I plan on installing mysql and a bit of my own software which shouldn't be too big. However, this distribution needs to be extremely small in terms of disk space. The distribution, including mysql should not exceed 100mb. It should, of course still be able to connect to the internet and perform other standard functions. I don't need X/any sort of window manager, and would prefer not to have it since it would increase disk usage. Currently I have tried ttylinux and tiny core linux. I've found that ttylinux, while is extremely small, has almost nothing so that mysql can't even be installed. Tiny core linux, on the other hand is a bit too big. I've found openembedded and linux from scratch, but I would prefer for the install and build process to be much easier. What other distribution would you recommend for my purposes? Minimizing disk usage is the most important, followed by ease of installing and creating the custom distribution.

• USB ports not recognizing devices (vista)

  I'm trying to fix a problem on a Vista machine where all the USB ports seem to have power but they don't recognize devices plugged into them. It seemed to start after I plugged my mp3 player (sansa clip) into it and disconnect it. So it sounds similar to this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900 but that was for XP. And I did try all the fixes (including the registry entry) but they did not help. It also sounds similar to this SU question 50110 but I don't think it is the mother board. I have see other places that suggest reinstalling the OS...but that seems like a last resort type of thing. I have also seen a suggestion of doing a system restore but not sure if that will help. Any ideas of what I can try?

• Subversion Edge LDAP (require CAC Certificate not Username and Password)

  What I've Done: I've successfully installed and configured Subversion Edge 3.1.2 with LDAP support on a Windows 2008 server. I have configured LDAP users and am able to use LDAP credentials to work on repositories just fine. No issues whatsoever. Works great! What I Want To Do: I've been searching for several hours now in hopes to find some information on how to configure Subversion Edge server to require client certificates for user authentication against an LDAP environment. I have not found anything yet that gives me an indication of how to do it. I know there are SVN clients that are capable of prompting for CAC certificates but I cannot figure out how to set my server up to require it. NOTE: CAC authentication is already setup and working in the windows environment. Desired Outcome: When running svn commands that require authentication against my Subversion Edge Server I want it to prompt me for my CAC certificate instead of my Active Directory username and password. If anyone has any information on this I'd greatly appreciate it. EDIT: I'm still digging so if I find out anything I'll update this question with what I found.

I am confused, because when I copy / paste the functions into the console, all is fine and they work. I also have a function defined in my profile, and it works. Where am I thinking wrong, why doesn't it work what I'm trying to do?

• Directly paste clipboard image into gmail message

  I would like to be able to directly paste my clipboard image into a Gmail message. I could then just do alt-print screen, go to Gmail compose and press ctrl-v to embed a screenshot, for instance. I'm not talking about embedding a image from disk into my email; that's easily done. I want to skip the step where I have to save it to disk first. Eudora/Thunderbird support this. There's a program that does this, it's at picturepaste.com, but it's paid (and and the website uses Javascript for no obvious reasons). You can see the demo movie there if it's not clear what I would like. I would like to find a free alternative, or make one myself, but I have no clue how picturepaste works.

• Virtualised Sharepoint Backup Strategies

  I have a Sharepoint (OSS 2007) farm running on three virtual machines in VMWare ESX, plus a SQL Server backend on physical hardware. During a recent Business Continuity Planning event I tried restoring the sharepoint farm with only the config and content databases, and failed to get things working. My plan was to build a new sharepoint server, then attach this to a restoration config database and install the Central Management site on this server, then reattach the content databases. This failed at the Central Management part of the plan. So I am back to the drawing board on the best strategy for backup and recovery, with reducing the time and complexity of the restore job the main objective. I haven't been able to find much in the way of discussion of backup/restore strategies for Sharepoint in a VMWare environment, so I figured I'd see if anyone on server fault has any ideas or experience.

  Direct shot to foot moment... While setting-up individual non-admin accts for MSSQLSERVER services, I temporarily set Server service login to Local System account. I remembered later that: SQL Server Configuration Manager performs additional configuration such as setting permissions in the Windows Registry so that the new account can read the SQL Server settings. I want my Local System back . (Actually just restored to its original security profile) Any advice? Thanks!

• Fixing SharePoint 2010 Permission Problems on Windows 7

  I had a tough time trying to have SharePoint working perfectly on a Windows 7 development machine that was occasionally disconnected from the Active Directory (when I am home I must connect through a VPN). I mostly had problems with service applications such as User Profile, Managed Metadata, Business Connectivity Services and the like, and all I knew were cryptical messages such as “access denied” or “the service or application pool is not started”. I was sure that both the services and application pools were running under a domain account that had proper permissions on the SQL Server instance, and basically it was a fresh installation. Lots of people are having the same problem, apparently. After banging my head against the wall for several days, I remembered about farm (what I had) versus stand-alone (which I had never tried) installations. Bingo! Here’s what I did: I dropped all SharePoint databases and logins and reinstalled SP from scratch, only this time not in farm mode, but as stand-alone. After the SharePoint Configuration Wizard started, I cancelled it and started the Management Shell. I created the configuration database manually by using the New-SPConfigurationDatabase cmdlet where I specified a local account – something that the Configuration Wizard wouldn’t allow me to do. Then I restarted the Configuration Wizard and everything began working perfectly! Yes, I got some pre-configured service applications and also some content which I didn’t need, but I realized it was possible to drop and recreate everything the way I wanted to. All services and application pools are now running under local accounts, which is fine for my development needs. Really, Microsoft… I hope this will bring light to someone facing the same problems!

• Allow VMWare client to connect only via VPN

  I have a VMWare (currently using Workstation on Vista, but thinking about switching to ESX) client with Windows XP. I've installed OpenVPN in the client and it connects to the corporate VPN server. I want to make sure that all traffic from the Windows XP machine goes trough this VPN tunnel, but I can't change any settings on the corporate VPN server. Is it possible to restrict the internet connectivity of the Windows XP client in such a way that it can only send packets to the IP of the corporate VPN server? In that way it'd be impossible for packets to bypass the tunnel. I've looked at NAT configurations but couldn't see how I could make this setup.

• Sharp mx2600 driver cannot see all the paper trays

  I am wondering if someone might have experienced this problem and have a solution. I have just taken over a network about a month ago so it is hard to know what truly worked and didn't work. However the end users reported that they used to be able to choose the tray they wanted to print from in the printer preferences in the driver for the Sharp MX2600n device then send the print job. Now they only have two trays to choose from instead of the four trays that exist. The only thing I have changed that might relate to this network device is the Admin password on the domain controller. I haven't made any changes to the Sharp device or the driver, until recently when I tired to update the driver for this device but that didn't fix anything. The domain controller is a Server 2008 VM running in Hyper-visor and it is pushing the shared printer out to the domain. I have looked at the web interface to manage the device and I can see all four paper trays in there, however if I try to see the number of trays from the driver interface, I can only see the top two paper trays and there should be four of them. This is the same with the admin account on the server or a workstation inside the domain, also a standard user account see's the same result. I have even tried updating the tray status within the driver to show more trays, but that doesn't help. I am hoping there is someone out there that has experienced this problem and knows a solution.

  I'm looking for a way to make Exchange 2007 only accept mail from a certain group of hosts. These hosts all use the same identifying rDNS entry. Exchange 2003 uses a whitelist based on the reverse DNS, there we could add the hostname to the to the "Domain" field. However, in Exchange 2007 this option seems to be removed. Is there a way to do this? IP's however tend to change. These changes can occur at any time, and it is impossible to keep all the servers up-to-date to the new IP's. • Cannot resolve dependencies when trying to install gnome-libs or xscreensaver on linux

  I am a linux noob and am trying to install ORacle10g on RHEL5 but am running into difficulties on the requirements stage. The only 2 packages I require is gnome-libs and xscreensaver. I have downloaded both: 'gnome-libs-1.4.1.2.90-44.1.i386.rpm 'xscreensaver-4.18-5.rhel4.11.i386.rpm' But when I try to install them I get dependency errors. I have been trawling sites and forums for 2 days now and am no closer to resolving this and continuing with my Oracle install. To pre-empt possible trouble-shooting questions, here is a list of the dependcies that could not be resolved: For gnome-libs: libdb.so.2(GLIBC_2.0) ORBit libdb.so.2 libllOP.so.0 libORBitCosNaming.so.0 libORBitutil.so.0 libORBit.so.0 libpng.so.2 And it says all the above is needed by package 1:gnome-libs-1.4.1.2.90-44.1.i386(/gnome-libs-1.4.1.2.90-44.1.i386) For xscreensaver: xloadimage is needed by package 1:xscreensaver-4.18-5.rhel4.11.i386(/xscreensaver-4.18-5.rhel4.11.i386) Sorry if I have explained this in a crap way - like I said - linux noob here. • How or why would this mechanic (not) work to bring game balance to a singleplayer RPG? [closed]

  Mechanic details The player, the monsters, and the merchants act as three separate parties. The player needs to beat up monsters for exp points and resources to sell and to buy potions from merchants to continue to fight. The monsters need healing and reviving to survive (also bought from merchants) and the merchants need potion ingredients from the player and the monsters to make potions to sell. These potions are only able to be processed in such bulk by merchants thus their potions would be cheaper than making them yourself. Only the monsters can farm ingredients in bulk. Only the player is or has to be overly aggressive (in bulk). Monsters can farm and produce "Level up candies" that do the work of exp. they are eaten right away after they are made and are never stockpiled or held for fear of the player and merchants who want to sell to the player. The monsters will defend themselves. Reviving is very expensive. The merchants can be found either with a concerned expression or a grinning expression based on how much profit they are making compared to their morale standing. The economies of each monster town and merchant city are distinct but interconnected. Magic Swords are worth a lot. So what I need to know is what concerns would there be to design a game around this mechanic and/or design this mechanic around a developing game. which would fare better? Is game balance an issue here? (how strong the monsters get or how quickly they die off based on the player's input into the system), Or is game balance solely in the hands of the player? (he decides if he overkills monsters or get underleveled.) What do I need to think about to make sure it isn't too easy or too hard to swing the amount/strength of monsters compared to the player and the amount of profit the merchants get vs the player. Would indicating how out of whack things are getting in game help with this?
