• Re-running SSRS subscription jobs that have failed

  Sometimes, an SSRS subscription for some reason. It can be annoying, particularly as the appropriate response can be hard to see immediately. There may be a long list of jobs that failed one morning if a Mail Server is down, and trying to work out a way of running each one again can be painful. It’s almost an argument for using shared schedules a lot, but the problem with this is that there are bound to be other things on that shared schedule that you wouldn’t want to be re-run. Luckily, there’s a table in the ReportServer database called dbo.Subscriptions, which is where LastStatus of the Subscription is stored. Having found the subscriptions that you’re interested in, finding the SQL Agent Jobs that correspond to them can be frustrating. Luckily, the jobstep command contains the subscriptionid, so it’s possible to look them up based on that. And of course, once the jobs have been found, they can be executed easily enough. In this example, I produce a list of the commands to run the jobs. • Tomcat still running after uninstalling

  I installed tomcat7 using the following command: sudo apt-get install tomcat7 Then to uninstall it, I used below command: sudo dpkg -l|grep tomcat This listed all the packages related to tomcat. Then I removed tomcat7: sudo dpkg -P tomcat7 After that, I saw that, some related package were still there, and surprisingly I was still able to access the tomcat home page at - http://localhost:8080. So, I tried to remove it using the following command: sudo apt-get remove tomcat7 sudo apt-get autoremove But, still I was able to access the tomcat home page. So I re-booted my PC, thinking that the effect will take effect after that. But again, I'm still able to access the homepage. That means that tomcat is still running on my PC. What's going on here? Have I followed the steps correctly to uninstall tomcat. I want to uninstall to re-install a private instance of tomcat. I found out that the directory - /usr/share/tomcat7, is still there: /usr/share/tomcat7$ ls conf log webapps Is it something to do with the uninstallation?

• Simplifying the process of compiling and running objective-c apps in GNUstep

  I just installed GNUstep (following this post: http://www.jaysonjc.com/programming/objective-c-programming-in-windows-gnustep-projectcenter.html) It says to run this code: gcc -o helloworld helloworld.m -I /GNUstep/System/Library/Headers -L /GNUstep/System/Library/Libraries -lobjc -lgnustep-base -fconstant-string-class=NSConstantString every time I want to compile. It works just fine for me. However as I'm learning and will be compiling/running apps way often (making little changes and trying again), I'd like a simpler way to do this. Is there an easier way to compile and then run the app? Or am I just being lazy?

• Often "running in low-graphics mode” with NVidia GeForce GT 430

  Often (every fifth time perhaps) when I turn on my system, I'm greeted with the "running in low-graphics mode” window. Sometimes all I have to do is reboot and the system will start correctly, sometimes there can be a longer series of failed starts. If I go to the terminal and log in, I can run startx and my desktop will appear without problems. At the end of /var/log/Xorg.1.log I see this: [ 77.459] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. [ 77.459] Fatal server error: [ 77.459] no screens found [ 77.459] Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.x.org Is the NVidia creating the appropriate XOrg configuration dynamically on every boot, or what could explain that the configuration error above only occurs sometimes?

• Oracle 64-bit assembly throws BadImageFormatException when running unit tests

  We recently upgraded to the 64-bit Oracle client. Since then, Visual Studio 2010 unit tests that hit the database (I know, unit tests shouldn't hit the database--they're not perfect) all fail with this error message:Test method MyProject.Test.SomeTest threw exception: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'Oracle.DataAccess, Version=4.112.3.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.I resolved this by changing the test settings to run tests in 64-bit. From the Test menu, go to Edit Test Settings, and pick your settings file. Go to Hosts, and change the "Run tests in 32 bit or 64 bit process" dropdown to "Run tests in 64 bit process on 64 bit machine". Now your tests should run.This fix makes me a little nervous. Visual Studio 2010 and earlier seem to change that file for no apparent reason, add more settings files, etc. If you're not paying attention, you could have TestSettings1.testsettings through TestSettings99.testsettings sitting there and never notice the difference. So it's worth making a note of how to change it in case you have to redo it, and being vigilant about files VS tries to add.I'm not entirely clear on why this was even a problem. Isn't that the point of an MSIL assembly, that it's not specific to the hardware it runs on? An IL disassembler can open the Oracle.DataAccess.dll in question, and in its Runtime property, I see the value "v4.0.30319 / x64". So I guess the assembly was specifically build to target 64-bit platforms only, possibly due to a 64-bit-specific difference in the external Oracle client upon which it depends. Most other assemblies, especially in the .NET Framework, list "msil", and a couple list "x86". So I guess this is another entry in the long list of ways Oracle refuses to play nice with Windows and .NET.If this doesn't solve your problem, you can read others' research into this error, and where to change the same test setting in Visual Studio 2012.

• Second display running off laptop VGA not correctly positioned (offset left and up)

  I have black bars on the right and bottom of my display! I'm running my laptop's VGA output to an recognized as a It is 20", but the assumed 3" difference does not account for the incorrect position. Everything displays fine. It runs high-res video beautifully. But it's 3/4" offset left and an unreasonably annoying 1/4" offset up. I've tried going through the display's annoying & useless menu, but it doesn't have any way to adjust the position. I'm certainly no linux newbie, but on this Ubuntu (Pangolin, BTW) I can't figure out how to make simple positional display changes on Ubuntu. It's not only frustrating, it's a bit humiliating! So. Does anyone know of an app that will allow me to make basic display position alterations? ("App" - annoyingly trendy, but a useful word - no matter how grating.) Thanks, & Cheers, Paz

• logout when running firefox over ssh

  this is very strange and has never happened before. When I ssh to a remote computer at my uni and try and run firefox (even with -no-remote etc.) it automatically logs me out of my local computer. When I log in again it automatically runs teamviewer ( suspicious!!! ). It also came up with a "network service discovery disabled" error similar to this post when logging back in: network service discovery disabled. I am running ubuntu 12.04 on a hp pavillion laptop. I would appreciate if someone can tell me what I am doing wrong....

• Bug in firefox address bar autocomplete running on KDE

  Has anyone experienced this graphical glitch when typing in Firefox address bar? The drop-down list is not drawn correctly, with some "blocks" missing. After typing more letters or hovering the mouse cursor, the list redraws itself and becomes complete. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, Firefox 13.0.1 and this only happens in KDE (tested with 4.8.2, 4.8.3 and 4.8.4). It does not happen in Unity or Xfce with the same user profile. If I go to the KDE control panel and disable the Fade effect, the bug starts to happen to almost every menu in the system, including, the taskbar window previews. Enabling the “Fade” effect corrects the bug everywhere except in Firefox. I have an Nvidia card and I am using the proprietary driver (current, not current-updates -- not sure about the difference), but the linked question on an Arch Linux forum says this happen with the open source driver and with other cards too. Does anyone have an idea for a solution?

• Performance cost of running Ubuntu from external hard drive

  A friend just complained to me about Ubuntu being slow. Although I've noticed a certain lack of snappiness with Linux vs Windows in the past, I really can't say I've had much to grumble about with the recent distributions of Ubuntu. That said, his objections seem much worse than the ones I used to have and I know that his current setup is significantly more powerful than my laptop. And then it turned out he is running Ubuntu off an external HDD hooked up via USB2.0. The HD enclosure is USB3.0 but apparently he can't manage to get it to boot on USB3.0 so he switched to one of the USB2.0 ports or whatever and that works, albeit not very well. Now I would expect USB to add some overhead to communication between the computer and the HDD; SATA is after all designed to get the maximum out of a hard drive, whereas USB is, well, universal. What are your expreriences with booting off external HDDs? Edit: Does anybody know just how much of a slowdown can be expected?

• System went to sleep while running do-release-upgrade

  I am trying to upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 on a laptop. I have run sudo do-release-upgrade During the upgrade process the laptop went into sleep/locked screen mode. I have rebooted and noticed that dependencies are broken. Running: lsb_release -a shows that the version has been upgraded to 14.04. However, the upgrade process did not finish(there was no output, I had to restart the workstation as the screen was blinking continuously). Now, following this question I have run sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade and am now waiting for the process to finish.

  I know this is really an Eclipse issue but I can't seem to login in their forum. I am running eclipse juno for some c/c++ development.However, I wrote a .bash script that initiate the entire program.As input argument to this script, I have a a configuration file which is one directory lower than the .bash file. In terminal I just do: ./startenb.bash ./CONF/ANNE it runs just fine. How can I configure the external tools in eclipse to take this file path as input argument? Any help or old thread vaguely addressing this issue is highly welcome.

• Updates broke my themes/shell [Ubuntu 12.04 running Gnome 3 ]

  I am running gnome-session 3.4.2.1. After the latest updates (listed below) my theme regressed to what looks like tango - not sure. Am unable to change it using Gnome-tweak tool or the display settings. I am also unable to change the wallpaper. Here's what it looks like: Synaptic: Chromium and this is the wallpaper page even though I have selected the wallpaper, it actually does not change. This same problem occurred on my personal computer, and one other computer I have, all running the same software/config. The interesting thing is that while Gnome 3 and Unity are affected, Cinnamon is not. What I've done so far: purged and re-installed both gnome 3 and Unity- no change noted. So, how do I fix this? • Error running phusion passenger in standalone mode

  I'm trying to run standalone phusion passenger so that I can run different ruby rvm configurations on the same host. I already have ruby and passenger running fine on this host. I am following the instructions here. When I run standalone passenger the first time, it appears to successfully install nginx. But then when it tries to run, I get this error: [root@clark directra]# passenger start -a 127.0.0.1 -p 3001 -d --user dweb *** ERROR *** Could not start Passenger Nginx core: nginx: [alert] could not open error log file: open() "/tmp/passenger-standalone.16757/logs/error.log" failed (2: No such file or directory) nginx: [alert] Unable to start the Phusion Passenger watchdog (/var/lib/passenger-standalone/3.0.11-x86-ruby1.9.3-linux-gcc4.1.2-1002/support/ agents/PassengerWatchdog): Permission denied (13) (13: Permission denied) Stopping web server... done FWIW, /tmp is writeable. • Hide debug information when running apps from the command line

  Most of the time running a gtk application from the command line it starts dumping debug information to the stdio even though I put them in background. Example: ~$ gedit test.html # and ctrl+z to suspend zsh: suspended gedit .zshrc ~$ bg [1] + continued gedit .zshrc ~$ # do some editing (gedit:6208): GtkSourceView-WARNING **: Could not find word to remove in buffer (whoosh), this should not happen! (gedit:6208): GtkSourceView-WARNING **: Could not find word to remove in buffer (haystack), this should not happen! I want to note that the error, or warning, changes according to what I'm doing at the moment. The GtkSourceView-WARNING shown here is one of the cases. Anyway... Do you know if it's at all possible to avoid getting that information printed out?

The link says something about "master mode", how do i put my T61 wifi-inter4965 in master mode. Can i install madwifi or atheros drivers on it. I am using galaxy S froyo, and it does not support Ad-hoc network. Has anyone tired to achieve this.

However, many of them seem to suggest reinstalling different things. After pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 and getting to a terminal, I attempt commands like sudo apt-get install example. Upon doing so I get notices that say things such as could not resolve host which I am assuming means I'm not connected to the Internet. Since I can not connect to the Internet, none of these responses are helpful to me. What can I do?

• WebFX: Running JavaFX as web page

  This weekend I wanted to learn JavaFX, so I decided to code an idea I had a few years ago when I first saw JavaFX Script. So I started coding a web browser that runs HTML with the awesome, HTML5 supported WebView. But this browser also offers one extra feature: it loads FXML files as if they were HTML. So instead of defining your web page with HTML and running with WebKit, you can define a web page with FXML+CSS+JS and run as a JavaFX application. The project is called WebFX and already has a prototype on GitHub. I also uploaded a video on YouTube demonstrating the idea. What do you think about using JavaFX in the future for web pages, instead of HTML?

• Joomla Backend running slow on localhost

  I made a local backup of a Joomla site a few months ago to test changes before updating the live site. Everything worked fine. Today I checked the local version after a while but when I open the backend (/administrator) it takes a while until the site is loaded. I tried out different things and accidently disconnected my Network Connection. After that everything loads as fast as before. But when I connect the Network Connection the problem reappears. I am running Joomla 1.5.14 on XAMPP 1.7.0.
