  • Django Querysets -- need a less expensive way to do this..

    - by rh0dium
    Hi all, I have a problem with some code and I believe it is because of the expense of the queryset. I am looking for a much less expensive (in terms of time) way to to this.. log.info("Getting Users") employees = Employee.objects.filter(is_active = True) log.info("Have Users") if opt.supervisor: if opt.hierarchical: people = getSubs(employees, " ".join(args)) else: people = employees.filter(supervisor__name__icontains = " ".join(args)) else: log.info("Filtering Users") people = employees.filter(name__icontains = " ".join(args)) | \ employees.filter(unix_accounts__username__icontains = " ".join(args)) log.info("Filtered Users") log.info("Processing data") np = [] for person in people: unix, p4, bugz = "No", "No", "No" if len(person.unix_accounts.all()): unix = "Yes" if len(person.perforce_accounts.all()): p4 = "Yes" if len(person.bugzilla_accounts.all()): bugz = "Yes" if person.cell_phone != "": exphone = fixphone(person.cell_phone) elif person.other_phone != "": exphone = fixphone(person.other_phone) else: exphone = "" np.append({ 'name':person.name, 'office_phone': fixphone(person.office_phone), 'position': person.position, 'location': person.location.description, 'email': person.email, 'functional_area': person.functional_area.name, 'department': person.department.name, 'supervisor': person.supervisor.name, 'unix': unix, 'perforce': p4, 'bugzilla':bugz, 'cell_phone': fixphone(exphone), 'fax': fixphone(person.fax), 'last_update': person.last_update.ctime() }) log.info("Have data") Now this results in a log which looks like this.. 19:00:55 INFO phone phone Getting Users 19:00:57 INFO phone phone Have Users 19:00:57 INFO phone phone Processing data 19:01:30 INFO phone phone Have data As you can see it's taking over 30 seconds to simply iterate over the data. That is way too expensive. Can someone clue me into a more efficient way to do this. I thought that if I did the first filter that would make things easier but seems to have no effect. I'm at a loss on this one. Thanks To be clear this is about 1500 employees -- Not too many!!

  • How to restrict a content of string to less than 4MB and save that string in DB using C#

    - by Pranay B
    I'm working on a project where I need to get the Text data from pdf files and dump the whole text in a DB column. With the help of iTextsharp, I got the data and referred it String. But now I need to check whether the string exceeds the 4MB limit or not and if it is exceeding then accept the string data which is less than 4MB in size. This is my code: internal string ReadPdfFiles() { // variable to store file path string filePath = null; // open dialog box to select file OpenFileDialog file = new OpenFileDialog(); // dilog box title name file.Title = "Select Pdf File"; //files to be accepted by the user. file.Filter = "Pdf file (*.pdf)|*.pdf|All files (*.*)|*.*"; // set initial directory of computer system file.InitialDirectory = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.Desktop); // set restore directory file.RestoreDirectory = true; // execute if block when dialog result box click ok button if (file.ShowDialog() == DialogResult.OK) { // store selected file path filePath = file.FileName.ToString(); } //file path /// use a string array and pass all the pdf for searching //String filePath = @"D:\Pranay\Documentation\Working on SSAS.pdf"; try { //creating an instance of PdfReader class using (PdfReader reader = new PdfReader(filePath)) { //creating an instance of StringBuilder class StringBuilder text = new StringBuilder(); //use loop to specify how many pages to read. //I started from 5th page as Piyush told for (int i = 5; i <= reader.NumberOfPages; i++) { //Read the pdf text.Append(PdfTextExtractor.GetTextFromPage(reader, i)); }//end of for(i) int k = 4096000; //Test whether the string exceeds the 4MB if (text.Length < k) { //return the string text1 = text.ToString(); } //end of if } //end of using } //end try catch (Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.Message, "Please Do select a pdf file!!", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Warning); } //end of catch return text1; } //end of ReadPdfFiles() method Do help me!

  • Can I make TCP/IP session to run less than 60 seconds?

    - by Pavel
    Our server is overloaded with TCP/IP sessions, we have 1200 - 1500 of them. Most of them are hanging in TIME_OUT state. It turns out that a connection in TIME_OUT state occupies a socket until 60 second time-out is elapsed. The problem is that the server gets unresponsive and many clients are not getting served. I have made a simple test: download an XML file from the server with Internet Explorer 8.0 The download finishes in a fraction of second. But then I see that the TCP/IP connection is hanging in TIME_OUT state for 60 seconds. Is there any way to get rid of TIME_OUT waiting or make it less to free the socket for new connections? I understand why TCP/IP connection enters TIME_OUT state, but I don't understand why Internet Explorer does not close the connection after the XML file download is over. The details. Our server runs web service written in Perl (mod-perl). The service provides weather data to clients. Client is a Flash appication (actually Flash ActiveX control embedded in Windows application). Apache "Keep Alive" option is set to 0

  • Are there any less costly alternatives to Amazon's Relational Database Services (RDS)?

    - by swapnonil
    Hi All, I have the following requirement. I have with me a database containing the contact and address details of at least 2000 members of my school alumni organization. We want to store all that information in a relation model so that This data can be created and edited on demand. This data is always backed up and should be simple to restore in case the master copy becomes unusable. All sensitive personal information residing in this database is guaranteed to be available only to authorized users. This database won't be online in the first 6 months. It will become online only after a website is built on top of it. I am not a DBA and I don't want to spend time doing things like backups. I thought Amazon's RDS with it's automatic backup facility was the perfect solution for our needs. The only problem is that being a voluntary organization we cannot spare the monthly $100 to $150 fees this service demands. So my question is, are there any less costlier alternatives to Amazon's RDS?

  • UDP packets are dropped when its size is less than 12 byte in a certain PC. how do i figure it out the reason?

    - by waan
    Hi. i've stuck in a problem that is never heard about before. i'm making an online game which uses UDP packets in a certain character action. after i developed the udp module, it seems to work fine. though most of our team members have no problem, but a man, who is my boss, told me something is wrong for that module. i have investigated the problem, and finally i found the fact that... on his PC, if udp packet size is less than 12, the packet is never have been delivered to the other host. the following is some additional information: 1~11 bytes udp packets are dropped, 12 bytes and over 12 bytes packets are OK. O/S: Microsoft Windows Vista Business NIC: Attansic L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller WSASendTo returns TRUE. loopback udp packet works fine. how do you think of this problem? and what do you think... what causes this problem? what should i do for the next step for the cause? PS. i don't want to padding which makes length of all the packets up to 12 bytes.

  • What 20 Lines (or less) of code did you find really useful?

    - by Ygam
    You can share your code or other's code. Here's a snippet from an array function in Kohana: public static function rotate($source_array, $keep_keys = TRUE) { $new_array = array(); foreach ($source_array as $key => $value) { $value = ($keep_keys === TRUE) ? $value : array_values($value); foreach ($value as $k => $v) { $new_array[$k][$key] = $v; } } return $new_array; } It was helpful when I was uploading multiple images using multiple file upload forms. It turned this array array('images' => array( 'name' => array( 0 => 'img1', 1 => 'img0', 2 =>'img2' ), 'error' => array( 0 => '', 1 => '', 2 => '' into : array('images' => array( 0 => array( 'name' => 'img1' 'error' => '' ),//rest goes here How about you? What 20 or less lines of code did you find useful?

  • The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request - uploading less 2MB file size?

    - by fiberOptics
    The file succeed to upload when it is 2KB or lower in size. The main reason why I use streaming is to be able to upload file up to at least 1 GB. But when I try to upload file with less 1MB size, I get bad request. It is my first time to deal with downloading and uploading process, so I can't easily find the cause of error. Testing part: private void button24_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { try { OpenFileDialog openfile = new OpenFileDialog(); if (openfile.ShowDialog() == System.Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK) { string port = "3445"; byte[] fileStream; using (FileStream fs = new FileStream(openfile.FileName, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.Read)) { fileStream = new byte[fs.Length]; fs.Read(fileStream, 0, (int)fs.Length); fs.Close(); fs.Dispose(); } string baseAddress = "http://localhost:" + port + "/File/AddStream?fileID=9"; HttpWebRequest request = (HttpWebRequest)HttpWebRequest.Create(baseAddress); request.Method = "POST"; request.ContentType = "text/plain"; //request.ContentType = "application/octet-stream"; Stream serverStream = request.GetRequestStream(); serverStream.Write(fileStream, 0, fileStream.Length); serverStream.Close(); using (HttpWebResponse response = request.GetResponse() as HttpWebResponse) { int statusCode = (int)response.StatusCode; StreamReader reader = new StreamReader(response.GetResponseStream()); } } } catch (Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.Message); } } Service: [WebInvoke(UriTemplate = "AddStream?fileID={fileID}", Method = "POST", BodyStyle = WebMessageBodyStyle.Bare)] public bool AddStream(long fileID, System.IO.Stream fileStream) { ClasslLogic.FileComponent svc = new ClasslLogic.FileComponent(); return svc.AddStream(fileID, fileStream); } Server code for streaming: namespace ClasslLogic { public class StreamObject : IStreamObject { public bool UploadFile(string filename, Stream fileStream) { try { FileStream fileToupload = new FileStream(filename, FileMode.Create); byte[] bytearray = new byte[10000]; int bytesRead, totalBytesRead = 0; do { bytesRead = fileStream.Read(bytearray, 0, bytearray.Length); totalBytesRead += bytesRead; } while (bytesRead > 0); fileToupload.Write(bytearray, 0, bytearray.Length); fileToupload.Close(); fileToupload.Dispose(); } catch (Exception ex) { throw new Exception(ex.Message); } return true; } } } Web config: <system.serviceModel> <bindings> <basicHttpBinding> <binding> <readerQuotas maxDepth="32" maxStringContentLength="8192" maxArrayLength="2097152" maxBytesPerRead="4096" maxNameTableCharCount="2097152" /> <security mode="None" /> </binding> <binding name="ClassLogicBasicTransfer" closeTimeout="00:05:00" openTimeout="00:05:00" receiveTimeout="00:15:00" sendTimeout="00:01:00" allowCookies="false" bypassProxyOnLocal="false" hostNameComparisonMode="StrongWildcard" maxBufferPoolSize="67108864" maxReceivedMessageSize="67108864" messageEncoding="Mtom" textEncoding="utf-8" useDefaultWebProxy="true"> <readerQuotas maxDepth="32" maxStringContentLength="8192" maxArrayLength="67108864" maxBytesPerRead="4096" maxNameTableCharCount="67108864" /> <security mode="None"> <transport clientCredentialType="None" proxyCredentialType="None" realm="" /> <message clientCredentialType="UserName" algorithmSuite="Default" /> </security> </binding> <binding name="BaseLogicWSHTTP"> <security mode="None" /> </binding> <binding name="BaseLogicWSHTTPSec" /> </basicHttpBinding> </bindings> <behaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior> <!-- To avoid disclosing metadata information, set the value below to false and remove the metadata endpoint above before deployment --> <serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="true" /> <!-- To receive exception details in faults for debugging purposes, set the value below to true. One more thing is this, whether I run the service and passing a stream or not, the created file always contain this thing. How could I remove the "NUL" data? Thanks in advance. Edit public bool UploadFile(string filename, Stream fileStream) { try { FileStream fileToupload = new FileStream(filename, FileMode.Create); byte[] bytearray = new byte[10000]; int bytesRead, totalBytesRead = 0; do { bytesRead = fileStream.Read(bytearray, totalBytesRead, bytearray.Length - totalBytesRead); totalBytesRead += bytesRead; } while (bytesRead > 0); fileToupload.Write(bytearray, 0, totalBytesRead); fileToupload.Close(); fileToupload.Dispose(); } catch (Exception ex) { throw new Exception(ex.Message); } return true; }

  • 4096 MiB SD card in Android Emulator... less than 9MB?

    - by Izhido
    Every time I attempt to create a new AVD with the latest Android SDK (under Eclipse), I can't actually specify SD Card Sizes greater than 1024 MiB. Any attempt to specify higher numbers gets me always the same message: "SD Card Size must be at least 9MB" What gives? Any idea why this could be happening?

  • bundle .NET dlls to run application in .NET-less machine?

    - by Camilo Martin
    AFAIK, ngen turns MSIL into native code (also reffered to as pre-JIT), however I never payed too much attention at it's startup performance impact. Ngen'd applications still require the .NET base class libraries (the runtime). Since the base class libraries have everything our .NET assemblies need (correct?) would it be possible to ship the framework's DLLs with my ngen'd application so that it does not require the runtime to be installed? (e.g., the scenario for most Windows XP machines) Oh, and please don't bother mentioning Remotesoft's Salamander Linker or Xenocode's Postbuild. They are not for my (and many's) current budget (and they seem to simply bundle the framework in a virtualized enviroinment, which means big download sizes and slow startup times I believe) EDIT: I know now, ngen doesn't do what I thought it did. But is it possible to bundle the .NET files with an application, without using a VM?

  • How does the linux kernel manage less than 1GB physical memory ?

    - by TheLoneJoker
    I'm learning the linux kernel internals and while reading "Understanding Linux Kernel", quite a few memory related questions struck me. One of them is, how the Linux kernel handles the memory mapping if the physical memory of say only 512 MB is installed on my system. As I read, kernel maps 0(or 16) MB-896MB physical RAM into 0xC0000000 linear address and can directly address it. So, in the above described case where I only have 512 MB: How can the kernel map 896 MB from only 512 MB ? What about user mode processes in this situation? Where are user mode processes in phys RAM? Every article explains only the situation, when you've installed 4 GB of memory and the kernel maps the 1 GB into kernel space and user processes uses the remaining amount of RAM. I would appreciate any help in improving my understanding. Thanks..!

  • Calling function using 'new' is less expensive than without it?

    - by Matthew Taylor
    Given this very familiar model of prototypal construction: function Rectangle(w,h) { this.width = w; this.height = h; } Rectangle.prototype.area = function() { return this.width * this.height; }; Can anyone explain why calling "new Rectangle(2,3)" is consistently 10x FASTER than calling "Rectangle(2,3)" without the 'new' keyword? I would have assumed that because new adds more complexity to the execution of a function by getting prototypes involved, it would be slower. Example: var myTime; function startTrack() { myTime = new Date(); } function stopTrack(str) { var diff = new Date().getTime() - myTime.getTime(); println(str + ' time in ms: ' + diff); } function trackFunction(desc, func, times) { var i; if (!times) times = 1; startTrack(); for (i=0; i<times; i++) { func(); } stopTrack('(' + times + ' times) ' + desc); } var TIMES = 1000000; trackFunction('new rect classic', function() { new Rectangle(2,3); }, TIMES); trackFunction('rect classic (without new)', function() { Rectangle(2,3); }, TIMES); Yields (in Chrome): (1000000 times) new rect classic time in ms: 33 (1000000 times) rect classic (without new) time in ms: 368 (1000000 times) new rect classic time in ms: 35 (1000000 times) rect classic (without new) time in ms: 374 (1000000 times) new rect classic time in ms: 31 (1000000 times) rect classic (without new) time in ms: 368

  • How to use less memory while running a task in Symfony 1.4?

    - by Guillaume Flandre
    I'm using Symfony 1.4 and Doctrine. So far I had no problem running tasks with Symfony. But now that I have to import a pretty big amount of data and save them in the database, I get the infamous "Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of XXXX bytes exhausted" During this import I'm only creating new objects, setting a few fields and saving them. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the number of objects I'm creating when saving data. Unsetting those objects doesn't do anything though. Are there any best practices to limit memory usage in Symfony?

  • How to make images hosted on Amazon S3 less public but not completely private?

    - by Jay Godse
    I fired up a sample application that uses Amazon S3 for image hosting. I managed to coax it into working. The application is hosted at github.com. The application lets you create users with a profile photo. When you upload the photo, the web application stores it on Amazon S3 instead of your local file system. (Very important if you host at heroku.com) However, when I did a "view source" in the browser of the page I noticed that the URL of the picture was an Amazon S3 URL in the S3 bucket that I assigned to the app. I cut & pasted the URL and was able to view the picture in the same browser, and in in another browser in which I had no open sessions to my web app or to Amazon S3. Is there any way that I could restrict access to that URL (and image) so that it is accessible only to browsers that are logged into my applications? Most of the information I found about Amazon ACLs only talk about access for only the owner or to groups of users authenticated with Amazon or AmazonS3, or to everybody anonymously.

  • How should it work if I want a page to have a theme-roller (more or less like the jQuery themeroller

    - by DanC
    The basic idea is to create a page that gives the user the ability to choose a skin or theme from a menu. When the user selects the desired skin/theme, it should be applied to the page, just like the jquery ui theme roller page. So, to be more precise, what I am trying to know is how to apply dynamically the style to a page - how to load the css and so forth. On the jquery ui theme roller, is there any javascript triggered after the new set of styles is loaded? (for js positioning or sizing?) (The answer may be simple as "just create a new style element and set its src"...) Just to be clear, I don't need the option to let users customize the UI, I want them just to be able to pick from a few pre set styles. Thanks!

  • How can I calculate the sum of all positive integers less than n? [closed]

    - by Adrian Godong
    I have the following function: f(n) = f(n - 1) + (n - 1) f(0) = 0 n >= 0 I have n declared on column A, and need the result of f(n) on column B. I'm trying to find the Excel formula equivalent for this function. Sample Result: A | B --+-- 0 | 0 or: A | B --+-- 1 | 0 or: A | B --+-- 4 | 6 but never: A | B --+-- 0 | 0 1 | 0 2 | 1 ... The biggest problem is, I can't simulate the value of f(n - 1). So referencing the previous row like the above example is invalid. I'm almost sure the answer is trivial, I just can't find it.

Any suggestions? var visitors = 187584; var updateVisitors = function() { visitors++; var vs = visitors.toString(), i = Math.floor(vs.length / 3), l = vs.length % 3; while (i-->0) if (!(l==0&&i==0)) vs = vs.slice(0,i*3+l) + ',' + vs.slice(i*3+l); $('#count').text(vs); setTimeout(updateVisitors, Math.random()*2000); }; setTimeout(updateVisitors, Math.random()*2000);
