• keyboard status leds not working

  Running Ubuntu 13.10 64bit The status leds are not working correctly on my new keyboard under Ubuntu. Pressing Caps Lock and Num Lock do not cause the leds to turn on/off to reflect their status. Rather I have a num lock led stuck on, and a caps lock led that never turns on. The actual function of the caps lock and num lock is unaffected though, just the leds not working. I am able to use ¨setleds¨ to turn the leds on an off from a console session, so I don´t think there's any hardware problem. Also the keyboard does not have the same problem under windows 7. Anyone have any solutions? thanks! BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash) (initramfs) alll thought the above problem was solved my issue now is..when i booted my pc again after this solving this to solve the above problem i had pressed e in the grub menu then corrected the partition then after starting i did sudo grub-update then i made some automatic update updates then in next reboot......my screen had gone blank .... and i am not even able to see bios screen....in the start ...the monitior just stays blank..................i have even tried disconnectiong my hard disk but still not able to get the display......solution required ....urgently.....

  Since Larry Ellison announced Oracle Exadata X3 as the new generation of the Database Machine, he established the product in the In-Memory Database arena. And that annoyed some people. We all know that In-Memory Databases are the ones that *only* execute in memory and use the other layers of storage for persistency (mainly disk). Oracle database has always been a technology that uses memory as a caching mechanism and that hasn't change nor it will change with Oracle Database 12c. So this is the central point of fuss when it comes to announcing an Engineered Systems as In-Memory Database, when in fact it still runs Oracle Database, not vanilla but still the same product. Let me tell you purist people out there: when you find no new ground breaking point to get all excited about you decide to bash it, and go against its claims. It's not like a car manufacturer that launches a mini-van in the market and calls it a Sports Car, we are talking about a fundamental change in the ILM stack: level 2 of caching is now self sufficient. It's not DRAM? Who cares, still let's you put in flash amounts of data not done up until now, so I guess Oracle can name it whatever Larry wants because in the end it's something never done before. Now let's imagine that you hop on the pure In-Memory Database bandwagon. You would be stuck with a database technology that lags behind the Oracle Database hundreds of light years in man/hours innovations and features. Do you really want to travel back in time? • Reasons NOT to open source not-for-profit code?

  I am a big fan of open source code. I think I understand most of the advantages of going open source. I'm a science student researcher, and I have to work with quite a surprising amount of software and code that is not open source (either it's proprietary, or it's not public). I can't really see a good reason for this, and I can see that the code, and people using it, would definitely benefit from being more public (if nothing else, in science it's vital that your results can be replicated if necessary, and that's much harder if others don't have access to your code). Before I go out and start proselytising, I want to know: are there any good arguments for not releasing not-for-profit code publicly, and with an OSI-compliant license? (I realise there are a few similar questions on SE, but most focus on situations where the code is primarily used for making money, and I couldn't much relevant in the answers.) Clarification: By "not-for-profit", I am including downstream profit motives, such as parent-company brand-recognition and investor profit expectations. In other words, the question relates only to software for which there is NO profit motive tied to the software what so ever.

• Google search question, front page not showing...

  I know this is probably a dumb question but I hope someone can give me some insight; I was ranked on Google first page of search results for "funny st patricks day shirts" but I was third from the bottom and not familiar enough with SEO, so I signed up for "Attracta" to rank higher. Big mistake. Since using Attracta, I've lost the first page and I'm now on the fourth page in that search. What I noticed is that Google is now just showing a sub-page or side page, (a link from my front page, to a page which has only a few designs in it) this is not where I would want customers to land first... but my front page is not showing in that search anymore. Obviously, the title of this side page is not geared toward that search result, so I know that's why I have the pr drop. Why is my front page not ranking over that page, though? Why is it apparently gone from that search, or so far back no one will ever find it? I need to know how to fix this quick if anyone has any advice at all for me. It's the busiest season for my website and the people who were stealing design ideas from me are all ranked higher than my site now. (I can prove this, lol) So, I'm very frustrated by that. • How to handle bugs that I think I fixed, but I'm not entirely sure

  There are some types of bugs which are very hard to reproduce, happen very rarely and seemingly by random. It can happen, that I find a possible cause, fix it, test the program, and can't reproduce the bug. However, as it was impossible to reliably reproduce the bug and it happened so rarely, how can I indicate this in a bugtracker? What is the common way of doing it? If I set the status to fixed, and the solution to fixed, it would mean something completely fixed, wouldn't it? Is it common practice to set the status to fixed and the solution to open, to indicate to the testers, that "it's probably fixed, but needs more attention to make sure" ? Edit: most (if not all) bugtrackers have two properties for the status of a bug, maybe the names are not the same. By status I mean new, assigned, fixed, closed, etc., and by solution I mean open (new), fixed, unsolvable, not reproducible, duplicate, not a bug, etc.

• LTS 12.04.1 will not resolve domain.local websites

  I have done a brand new installation of the Ubuntu server (v12.10) with bind configured to have a dns zone of gdos.local and apache configured for said domain. With a brand new installation of Ubuntu desktop LTS I try to connect to www.gdos.local and all I get is: Server not found Firefox can't find the server at www.gdos.local. Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com However if I change the domain to gdos.tmp and type in www.gdos.tmp, I get the internal website. If I change it to mybusiness.local , I get the same error message. If I use a Microsoft os, this works fine, all three domains resolve to a webpage. I have searched the internet flat for the past week on dns issues but have not come up with a solution. I have followed instructions from removing dnsmasq to editing like resolv.conf (in some very strange places) and I still have no joy on getting the .local domain extension to work. I can safely say the issue is not with the server but with the desktops because if the issue was server related the Microsoft OS's would not resolve it either. I have done several installs of the desktop in an effort to make sure that I did not break anything while trying to fix this. Please can anyone point to a workable solution for fixing the .local domain extension. Thank you Mark Hollander

• Installing chrome gives an error: "dependency is not satisfiable"

  I just installed ubuntu on my laptop, everything works fine, but I'd like to use chrome instead of firefox. I downloaded the .deb file from the chrome website, and when I open it, the install buton inside the software center is inactive (I can't click it) and it's telling me dependency is not satisfiable: libcurl3 I did a search for libcurl3 in the Software Center, the three results I'm getting are already installed. Any ideas how to fix this? I also tried installing chromium-browser, but that's not working out neither. I'm getting Package dependencies not resolved and this details block: The following packages have unmet dependencies: chromium-browser: Depends: libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1) but 1:4.5.2-8ubuntu4 is to be installed Depends: libxdamage1 (>= 1:1.1) but 1:1.1.3-1ubuntu1 is to be installed Depends: zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg) but 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3ubuntu3 is to be installed Depends: libnss3-1d (>= 3.12.3) but it is not going to be installed

  Not packages and not all applications. Just the applications user installed by himself from whatever source (Software Center, manually added PPA, etc.). If the above is not possible - a list of all installed applications or at least a GUI which lists the applications so I can take screenshots of it. I've read a dozen of similar questions and people posting answers usually don't even get close to OP question merit. Please note that my question includes 'user installed'. Answer: It is not currently possible in Ubuntu Linux. (choosing tijybba's answer as the closest one though)

The server was not found or was not accessible DOH!!!! Or a clean translation is that it cant find SQL or is offline or not running. SO check the power is on/Service running or as in my case Edit web.config & change back to Work SQL box   Hope you dont have this pain as the default errors @ the moment suck balls in the EntityFramework 4.XX releases   Cheers

During configuration of EPM products, a warning message is displayed if the Oracle DB is not UTF8 enabled. If you continue with the configuration, certain products will not work as they will not be able to read the contents in the tables as the format is wrong.b. The Oracle DB must be setup to use AL32UTF8 or a superset that contains AL32UTF8. c. The only difference between AL32UTF8 and UTF8 character sets is that AL32UTF8 stores characters beyond U+FFFF as four bytes (exactly as Unicode defines UTF-8). Oracle’s “UTF8” stores these characters as a sequence of two UTF-16 surrogate characters encoded using UTF-8 (or six bytes per character). Besides this storage difference, another difference is better support for supplementary characters in AL32UTF8 character set.

• Ubuntu not showing complete list of partitions while installing 10.04 and 10.10

  I am a total beginner to Ubuntu. I have tried to install Ubuntu on my 320 gb hard disk and am stuck at the partition page. The problem is, Ubuntu is not showing all the partitions. When I run the live CD and try to see all the drives these are not present. I have presently 4 drives, C: 58 GB D: 48 GB E: 87 GB and F: 102 GB. The F: drive is not shown; at the time of installing it does not show any of the drives, just a chunk of 257 GB, hence I am unable to install Ubuntu on my D: drive. On the C: drive, Windows 7 64 bit is installed.

• Facebook shared links not opening (Redirecting correctly) [on hold]

  I have been in a problem and after hours of searching find nothing useful to counter it. I have a website, and that website has RSS feed attached to facebook page. As I post the content to website it also appears on facebook page. But I have people complaining on my page that my posts don't open when they click the link to read the details. Since I am a Chrome user and didn't notice this happening for months. But as I checked it through firefox and Internet Explorer, I found the links shared actually don't open with these browswers. They only work in Chrome, means they are properly redirected in chrome browser and not in firefox and IE. Whenever I click on links of posts on my page through IE or firefox the url does not simply redirect to my website and I get to see nothing as if I am not connecting to Internet. When examining URL I see this: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F112NVO9&h=EAQHDgTUv&s=1 Which shows that facebook is not redirecting the links properly. Moreover I also use link shortening service bit.ly to shorten my shared links. I have checked same problem exists even if I don't shorten my links. And I checked I am not alone, even the tech giant website mashable.com links also don't open in IE and FF from facebook, they only open in Chrome. From mobile phone the links don't open (redirected properly) even in chrome. Can anyone tell me what is the issue? Nothing much is written about it on Internet as no once has faced this problem. P.S: I have checked from different systems, the problem persists.

• Google search does not show sub-pages from my website

  My website appears in Google search, but only the first page. Of course I have sub-pages linked from the first page, but the sub-pages do not show in Google search. Not in Yahoo, not in Bing. What should I do? It has been three years that sub-pages do not show. (I tried searching site:mydomain.com and pressed 'repeat the search with the omitted results included' link) What would you suspect the reason? My website addresses were like xxx.php?yy=zzz etc, etc, so I changed it to /yy/zzz using mod_rewrite. I thought it might be (X)HTML standard violations, so now I changed it. I hope Google will soon have my entire website, but I am a little bit pessimistic. Do you have any thought?

• Ubuntu 12.04LTS stuck at login mouse and keyboard not responding

  I have Ubuntu 12.04LTS installed on a dual-booted machine (i5 dual core 8G ram) and it's been working fine, but today for some reason when I logged out and tried to log back in it is stuck at the login page, i.e. the mouse and the keyboard are not responding. The mouse is stuck at the top left corner of my screen, and I can do nothing but to turn the machine off. (I have been using logitech wireless mouse and keyboard.) I can not access the virtual console (Alt-F1 or Cntrl-Alt-F1) either! Here is what I have tried so far: Verified it is not a H/W problem since the mouse and keyboard work fine with windows7 Booted with ubuntu installation dvd and ran trial mode and mouse and keyboard worked fine. Tried bypassing the login screen by booting into recovery mode and editing tty1.conf, but to no avail. I moved .Xauthority .profile and .bashrc from my $HOME to another location so my login would proceed completely by system defaults. But this did not help From recovery mode commandline used to dpkg-reconfigure to switch between gdm and lightgdm. This did not help either. By the way, when in recovery mode as root from command line I mount the filesystem, all apps work fine. Python is Ok, octave is ok, vi is ok etc. I have a feeling if I could only bypass the login screen, and automatically get into the desktop, I will be ok. But I haven't been able to accomplish this either. I desperately need help please. Thank you in advance. Update: So I tried to switch to lightdm by dpkg-configure lightdm. This at least brings me up to the classical linux commandline login prompt but without a gui. Should I install startx? Should I install ubuntu-desktop?

• Another VSeWSS Error Resolved (List Template not installed on Farm)

  Ran into a minor snag today trying to deploy a project with VSeWSS 1.3 - during the deployment it gave me the following error: Error    32    VSeWSS Service Error: Feature '2ade6552-200e-4425-8af5-f1f50c115b7e' for list template '10001' is not installed in this farm.  The operation could not be completed. At first glance, it looked my features were not installing in the correct order because the solution was installing a list that required a custom list definition before the custom list definition was being installed.  After switching the order in the WSP view (View -> Other Windows -> WSP View) -- you can use the up and down arrows on the view pane to switch feature installation order - I had the same error. I decided to try deleting the list, but upon visiting the list in the web interface I received a similar error about how the feature was not installed on the farm.  As such, I could not delete the list through the web interface.  Fortunately, the stsadm.exe tool worked just fine: stsadm.exe -o forcedeletelist -url <urltolisthere>

  I've tried to install Google Chrome for 32-bit .deb package. But it gave me the following errors: depends: lib32gcc1 (= 1:4.1.1) but it is not installable depends: lib32stdc++6 (= 4.6) but it is not installable depends: libc6-i386 (= 2.11) but it is not installable depends: libxss1 but it is not installable Currently, I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 (32-bit - i386).   my laptop has nvidia GT540m yesterday i install nvidia-current after updating fromsudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates then i write sudo nvidia-xconfig and then reboot my desktop visual effect changes and it look good like nvidia is working but still glx i not working and nvidia-setting tells me that You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver my dkms status is nvidia-current, 304.43, 3.2.0-30-generic-pae, i686: installed lspci |grep VGA output : 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 540M] (rev a1) also i can not login to my admin account but when i login to standard user or guest it works but still NVIDIA X driver is not working can any one suggest something so that NVIDIA X Driver start working as i seen many forum but none worked for me earlier i tried nvidia-173 ,nvidia-current(before x-swat/updates reprository) but none works for me
