• Automatically delete old files from a specified folder?

  I want to set up an automatic task that will automatically delete files older than X days from a specific folder. I'd prefer to do it without having to install any 3rd party software, but I'll be ok if it's a very small and simple utility. I want this to force me to keep my files organized. I am setting my browser to download to a standard folder, and then with this script to automatically delete files older than a week, I will be forced to move & organize downloaded files I want to keep.

• How does Outlook handle old recurring reminders?

  Context: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit edition Microsoft Office 2007 Outlook Steps to Reproduce: Make an event that recurs once a week. Wait a week. See that it pops up OK. Wait a month. Notice that it doesn't say that it is a month overdue. Expected Result: The usual note that the reminder is [x] weeks overdue. Actual Result: Something like "6 days overdue". Possible Excaberating Issue: I have many overdue reminders. For the ones that aren't time critical (and all other things being equal), I work by category and age. For example, I do health-related reminders when I'm doing health stuff; if I have 2 health-related reminders, I do the older one first. Big Question: How is Outlook supposed to handle this sort of overdue recurring reminder? Is there any way to get Outlook to act the way I expect it to?

• Old CRT screen's high resolution doesn't work anymore on windows 7

  One year ago I decided to switch from Windows XP to Windows 7. I had a 17" CRT monitor with a screen resolution of 1600x1200 which worked fine on Windows XP. While installing Windows 7 everything went well until Windows 7 was going to install the video card its driver. Windows 7 puts the screen to its recommended resolution and my screen became black. I waited a few minutes to be sure the installation was finished. I turned off the computer by hand and restarted the computer on a resolution of 800x640. When windows 7 was done installing I went to screen resolutions and the resolution of 1600x1200 was on the top of the list with '(recommended)' next to it. I tried putting it on 1600x1200 but again my screen went black. I installed all windows 7 updates including the video card driver from the NVidia site (NOT from Windows 7). I tried about everything to make it work on 1600x1200 but with no succes. The highest resolution I got with the crt monitor was 1280x1024. I had a TFT screen which had 1280x1024 as max resolution and had better colors, so I used that one till today. My video card is 9600GT and my power supply is beyond sufficient. I even tried to install the driver I had on XP to see if it worked, but no results. I tried classic mode on windows 7, changed the dpi, the frequentie and the monitor settings, but nothing worked. I really like a vertical resolution of 1200, but it seems today I'm bound to all those standard monitors with a resolution of 1980x1024... Can anybody explain to me what the cause is that it worked on Windows XP but not on Windows 7? And maybe a solution to the problem (I actually gave up on getting it fixed...) Thanks a lot in advance. SOLUTION I downloaded the according monitor driver and installed it. Next I rebooted my computer on low resolution (800x640) and connected the CRT monitor. When Windows 7 booted successfully I went to computer management and 'update the driver' of my monitor. I manually selected 'Generic PnP monitor' and made that one active. I want to advanced settings at 'Screen resolution' and selected the mode '1600x1200 (32-bit) 80 Hertz (95 Hertz did not work). Now I had my resolution on 1600x1200. I repeated the earlier step to select the original monitor again instead of the Generic monitor. Quite a way to solve this problem, but it worked! Thanks a lot you all.

  I have a situation where I'm standing up a new website on a different web host. I've been denied access to the old site by the hosting company and the old site will most likely be turned off very soon. If my new site contains pages that are named slightly different how do I go about setting up 301 redirects on my new site? For example: www.oldsite.com\aboutus\ www.newsite.com\aboutus.html www.newsite.com\productx.html www.oldsite.com\productx\ Edit: Clarification: The old domain name is different from the new domain name. On my newsite do I just duplicate every page that existed on the old site and place redirect code inside those pages? What does the redirect code look like?

• Trying to install an old program on Windows XP and getting an error message

  Hello I'm trying to install an older application named headline.exe. I'm getting an error message saying the the program has to end and asking if I want to notify Microsoft. The event logs says "Faulting application _untitled.exe version 1.0.0.1591, faulting module flash6.ocx, version 6.0.88.0, fault address blah blah blah. I uninstalled flash and installed version 6 of Flash and nothing changed. Any thoughts? Thanks

• How to debug old initd script under systemd?

  I have an older initd script to start my application. It worked fine under older versions of SuSE, but fails on Open SuSE 12.3. The strange thing is cd /etc/init.d ; ./script start works fine. /etc/init.d/script start shows a redirection to systemctl, but doesn't start my application (and also doesn't show any output from the initd script). I don't see any log entries showing me what goes wrong. The only entry I see is in /var/log/messages saying the application was started. How do I debug this ?

• Remote X-windows between new RHEL5 and old Solaris 8

  I have a very small lab network with three boxes: a modern x86-based RHEL3 box, an x86-based RHEL5 box, and a 1998-vintage SPARC Ultra5 with Solaris 8. I can use ssh -X to run a program on the RHEL5 box and view the windows on the RHEL3 box. I believe this uses xauth and magic cookies?? I have followed the X-Windows HOWTO to set up xauth on the Solaris box, but so far no dice. I would like to be able to use the X-windows server on the RHEL3 box with a client program on the Solaris box (program running on Solaris host, windows appearing at Linux host). Is there a trick to this, or have I made a mistake following the instructions for setting up xauth and magic cookie?

• Use old raid drive as boot device without data loss

  There were two disks in sw-raid. There were /dev/md1 as swap, /dev/md2 as boot and a /dev/md3 with ext4. The sw-raid was disabled by stopping and removing mdadm and then zeroing the superblock on each /dev/mdX partition with: sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sda1 sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sda2 sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sda3 In the disk that is the first boot device, I don't know if it's relevant, the system type of each partition was set back from fd to 82 or 83 with fdisk, /etc/fstab was updated, changing /dev/mdX to /dev/sdaX, and grub was reinstalled on the boot partition (/dev/sda2) with grub-instal. But the system wont boot. What else should I do to use this disk as the boot device without reinstall or data loss? Current output of fdisk Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 2048 33556480 16777216+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda2 * 33558528 34607104 524288+ 83 Linux /dev/sda3 34609152 3907027120 1936208984+ 83 Linux With it doesn't boot I mean that it stops in the grub console (with the grub> symbol). • Convert old videos to have smaller sizes

  I have some videos from a few years ago,with various formats, such as avi, mpg, wmv, rm, rmvb, .... Their sizes are huge(more than 500 MB, and sometimes 1GB). Given there may likely be some advance in data compression, I would like to know which file formats and compression methods are recommended these days, by the standard that without losing obvious data, while achieving big size reduction. How can I perform the file format conversion and data compression in Ubuntu 12.04? Command line and batch ways would be the most convenient, although GUI ways are also appreciated. • How to install (old) packages for Ubuntu 9.04?

  Based on some excellent feedback by Mark here (http://serverfault.com/questions/285598/should-i-clone-a-physical-server-to-create-a-vm-for-a-staging-server), today I was able to use the vmware converter to clone my production server for a staging server. However the nic won't come up no matter what I do. I attempted to inistall vmware tools, as I suspect that the fact that it is not installed might prevent the nic from working. (I have the nic set as a vmxnet3 card in the vm settings). The install failed because there were several dependencies missing as well as the Linux headers. Given that Ubuntu 9.04 has been EOL'd, the packages I need to install to get the vmware tools to install are no longer available. I doubt the ubuntu 9.04 install CD has the packages on it. What are my options? I'd rather not upgrade the version of Ubuntu yet, as the point of the vm right now is to maintain parity with the production server. Might I have better luck resetting the driver to use vmxnet2 instead of the vmxnet3? Thanks in advance! Chris

• Problems reviving old pc including graphics card issue.

  I have a PC that seemed to have died years ago that I am trying to revive. It has a dual core athlon processor and a gigabyte motherboard. It had two dual output graphics cards, and I have long since forgotten which output would print out the diagnostic information as the PC starts up. Also I suspect that the resolution set on all the monitors was probably higher than my current single monitor is capable of displaying. The motherboard also has a built in graphics card, so I thought it may be simplest to remove both the graphics cards and plug my monitor into the onboard graphics just while I get things going. Does that seem sensible? Now the other problem: The PC has two hard drives. I have no idea which one is the primary one it is attempting to boot from. When I power up, the fan comes on and I hear some chuga-chuga-pause chuga-chuga-pause repeat indefinitely. I'm not sure which device is making the noise. There are no-beeps at any time. I see nothing on the screen at any time, not even for a second. Any suggestions? EDIT: If T start up the PC without the power connected to the CDrom there is no chuga-chugan noise.

• Revamping an old and unstable office IT-solution using Windows Server and OpenVPN

  I've been given the cumbersome task to totally redo the IT-infrastructure for a customer's office. They are currently running Windows XP all over, with one computer acting as a file server with no control over which users have access to which files, and so on. To top it off, this file server also functions as a workstation, which means it gets rebooted every time the user notices some sluggish behavior or experiences problems with flash games. To say the least, this isn't working for them. Now - I've got a very slim budget, but I need to set up a new server, and I wish to run Windows Server 2008 on it. I also need the ability to access the network remotely via VPN. Would it be a good idea to install VMware ESXi 4.1 onto the new server, and then run Windows Server 2008 as well as a separate Debian install for openvpn on it? I don't like the Domain Controller for the future AD to also run a VPN-server, because of stability issues when something goes to hell with either of them. There will be no redundancy though. However, I'm not sure if there is something to gain by installing a VPN solution on the Windows Server itself, when it comes to accessing file shares on the network via VPN. I don't know how to enable users logging in via the VPN to access the remote files, since they will be accessing the network from their own home computers (which is indeed a really bad idea, but this is what I've got to work with). They won't be logged in to the windows Domain, but rather their home workgroups. I need to be able to grant access to files in certain directories based on the logged in AD-user, but every computer won't necessarily be configured to log into the domain. I'm not sure how to explain this in a good way, but I'd be happy to clarify if somethings not clear. Any help would be great, because I've got a feeling that I can't do this without introducing a bunch of costly new rules when it comes to their IT-solution. I'd rather leave that untouched and go on my merry way to the next assignment.

• Laptop does not charge old or new battery with Old and New AC adapters.

  My Sager computer has been having a strange issue with the charging. For a long time it would be working perfectly as long as I was active on it. After I'd leave idle for a while it would suddenly decide it didn't want to use AC power anymore and would just discharge the battery until it shutdown because of low battery levels. Was not a huge deal to me since I just sent it to standby when done with it and it worked fine. Recently, however, it would not detect AC power while the battery was in. It ran from the battery just fine but until you powered it down, unplugged the battery, then plugged in the AC adapter it would not be on AC. In addition if I plug the battery back in after it's on AC power, it will see it but the battery won't charge though it can still discharge it. This is OS independent. I tried both a replacement battery and a replacement AC adapter. Neither solved my issue. I'm fairly comfortable opening and servicing a laptop but I don't know where to start. I'd like to avoid replacing my system board if possible. Any Ideas?

So I have the config like rewrite ^/foo/(.*)$ /bar/$1 last; At the same time, I want to block public access to the real url /bar, Then I add the config like location ~* ^/bar{ return 404; } But when I add this url into the config, the 1st config above not work, now both return 404 Anything I should fix in order to make the rewrite work? • Mac OS X keeps "old" environment variable around

  So far I had /Applications/play-1.2.5/ added to my $PATH variable. Now I'm working with 2.2.1, which I installed in /Applications/play-2.2.1 and changed in ~/.bash_profile (which is getting sourced at startup). However, when printing $PATH, 1.2.5 is somehow still around: mbp:~ user$ echo $PATH /usr/local/share/npm/bin:/Applications/play-2.2.1:/usr/local/heroku/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/Applications/play-1.2.5:/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/:/opt/X11/bin As far as I now, I only entered $PATH variables in .bash_profile, which looks like this: mbp:~ user$ cat .bash_profile source ~/.git-completion.bash ### Added by the Heroku Toolbelt export PATH="/usr/local/heroku/bin:$PATH" ### Play Framework export PATH="/Applications/play-2.2.1:$PATH" export PATH="/usr/local/share/npm/bin:$PATH" I'm also not sure where the XAMPP extension to the variable comes from. Can I see somewhere which other files are being sourced on startup?

  I have an old website with very bad SEO and PR, but still with some visitors per-day. Lately I've rebuilt the app and the concept of it and I'm going to deploy everything in a new domain. I would like to not lose those old visitors but I'm wondering if redirecting that old website to my new one is going to damage the SEO in the new website. This will require installing an older version of mysql, but the packages that are listed are only showing a recent version. I'm currently running debian wheezy 7.1 and what was installed was the packaged 5.5.31. What is the official way to install an older copy?   I recently upgraded a site and almost all URLs have changed. I have redirected all of them (or so I hope) but it may be possible that some of them have slipped by me. Is there a way to somehow catch all invalid URLs and send the user to a certain page and somehow know what URL the person came from so I could log this, and fix those?   Let me start by saying that I am not a server guy - I am a developer. But I develop and manage an ASP.NET application that uses Windows authentication. I've run into the problem I am about to describe before, and I would just like to understand how to remedy it since I am the one who always gets the original support request. A user, let's call her JaneDoe, has just gotten married and her login has been changed to JaneJones. We have an application that uses Windows authentication to store the user's login name to a table and then redirects the user to another non-Windows authenticated site with a GUID which points to the table entry we just made. When the user reaches the second site, we read in the login name from the database using the GUID that was passed. Then, we look up the login name in another database where we track application permissions. The problem is that the user is logging into her workstation as JaneJones, but the Windows authenticated site is still receiving a login name of JaneDoe. Is this a domain controller issue? Is it a workstation issue? What's the best way to resolve this?
