  I have a database containing multiple tables (Person, Parents, etc) Person table has certain attributes particularly ssn, countryofbirth and currentcountry. Parents table has ssn, and fathersbirthcountry I'm trying to output the SSNs of all people who have the same countryofbirth as their fathersbirthcountry and also have same currentcountry as fathersbirthcountry. SELECT Person.ssn FROM Person, Parents WHERE fathersbirthcountry = countryofbirth AND currentcountry = fathersbirthcountry; the above doesn't seem to be working, could anyone please help me out?

  I would like to create my own parallel computing server. Can you please point me to some resources I can use to help me develop my server. Sorry, like I said I need help getting started. Yes, I am limited to python, I cannot use C. I am using a bunch of workstations and I want to use all the cpus in those machines. So what I am looking for is blog posts, books, articles that can help me develop my own client/server tools to send code from the client to the servers and spawn python processes based on the number of cpus. I know how to do the subprocessing/multiprocessing part of the program, I do not know how to create the server that will take the client's requests. I also need to figure out what is the best way to handle sending file data, like netcdf files or other spatial data. Any suggestions very welcome.

• Help making TP-Link Wireless USB Adapter TL-WN723N work consistently

  I've only recently made the jump to Ubuntu, using 11.10/64 as my only desktop OS. Everything seems to be working fine, except my USB Wireless adapter, TP-Link's TL-WN723N which is randomly connecting and disconnecting. The connection time appears to be random, too: I've experienced hours of connectivity and lots of connections/disconnections. I've tried searching for a solution, but what I find doesn't concern this specific USB adapter. I'd like some help identifying the problem... I've also recently switched to using a D-Link router as a wireless hub, which creates its own wireless/n network. Unfortunately this didn't solve my problems, as the new n network can be joined, but there's no connectivity to the internet. I know that's not much info to help others solve my problem, so please let me know of what else I can provide to make this a better question -- and possibly help others facing similar trouble. lsusb reports that I'm using Realtek Semiconductor Corp.   Recently I was tasked with producing a help file from a C#/WPF/Crystal Reports application using Sandcastle. I have previously blogged about the problems in doing that and the change that is going into the next version of Sandcastle that allows the vagaries of Crystal (this missing BusinessObjects.Licensing.KeycodeDecoder) to be handled. Two of the formats could not be built and the error messages were not exactly helpful as to the cause. These two formats turned out to be obsolete. The MSHA format worked but was not suitable for a standalone application, so that left me with the older CHM format. I therefore asked on that thread "will the HTML Help 1 (CHM) format continue to be supported for the foreseeable future?".Rob Chandler, MVP in help systems, gave a very helpful answer, to the effect that there is not yet a replacement for the CHM format.

• How not to suffer from ideologists when you're a pragmatic person?

  My story: I'm a pragmatic person. Sometimes, the most simple solution to a problem to get the job done is the one that fits best for me, if its not an utter blasphemy and reproach to any design principles. Check out my answer to this question on stackoverflow. Simple. Works. Was accepted. Could be improved. Is clearly not perfect. And along comes this guy. He downvotes me, comments on the question how his answer is better, more accurate etc and calls me "plain wrong". Reminds me of this comic strip. :-) While on stackoverflow I can laugh at these things because those people are far away, in the real world I'm suffering from ideologies every now and then. Heck, I'm not creating a miracle piece of software, I need to keep that huge legacy thing running, and it's an adventure to me every day. I don't have the time or passion to beautify my code (or other people's code) to that extent. My question(s): How do you deal with ideologies / ideologists, when you're a pragmatic person? How do you deal with pragmatism / pragmatists, when you're an ideologic person? I'm interested in both point of views. Tell me your experience. But please, be fair, somewhat objective, and understand that you may NOT be entirely correct and your opinion is NOT the only true one... :-)

• Entrepreneur Needs Programmers, Architects, or Engineers?

  Hi guys (Ladies included). I posted on a related site, but THIS is the place to be. I want to build a specialized website. I am an entrepreneur and refining valuations now for venture capitalsists: i.e., determining how much cash I will need. I need help in understanding what human resources I need (i.e., Software Programmers, Architects, Engineers, etc.)??? Trust me, I have read most--if not all--of the threads here on the subject, and I can tell you I am no closer to the answer than ever. Here's my technology problem: The website will include (2) main components: a search engine (web crawler)...and a very large database. The search engine will not be a competitor to google, obviously; however, it "will" require bots to scour the web. The website will be, basically, a statistical database....where users should be able to pull up any statistic from "numerous" fields. Like any entrepreneur with a web-based vision, I'm "hoping" to get 100+ million registered users eventually. However, practically, we will start as small as feasible. As regards the technology (database architecture, servers, etc.), I do want quality, quality, quality. My priorities are speed, and the capaility to be scalable...so that if I "did" get globally large, we could do it without having to re-engineer anything. In other words, I want the back-end and the "infrastructure" to be scalable and professional....with emphasis on quality. I am not an IT professional. Although I've built several Joomla-based websites, I'm just a rookie who's only used minor javascript coding to modify a few plug-ins and components. The business I'm trying to create requires specialization and experts. I want to define the problem and let a capable team create the final product, and I will stay totally hands off. So who do you guys suggest I hire to run this thing? A software engineer? I was thinking I would need a "database engineer," a "systems security engineer", and maybe 2 or 3 "programmers" for the search engine. Also a web designer...and maybe a part-time graphic designer...everyone working under a single software engineer. What do you guys think? Who should I hire?...I REALLY need help from some people in the industry (YOU guys) on this. Is this project do-able in 6 months? If so, how many people will I need? Who exactly needs to head up this thing?...Senior software engineer, an embedded engineer, a CC++ engineer, a java engineer, a database engineer? And do I build this thing is Ruby or Java?

  I am currently getting a needs index error on my app engine app: http://www.gaiagps.com/wiki/home. I believe this index should have been created automatically by my index.yaml file (see below). Googling a bit, I think I just need to wait for my index to be built. Is this correct, or do I need to do something manually? Is there some sort of index-building queue? My tables are very, very small right now. EDIT: I added the line "indexes:" to my app.yaml, and now app engine reports the index is building, so I think this is fixed. • Java: Initializing a public static field in superclass that needs a different value in every subclas

  Good evening, I am developing a set of Java classes so that a container class Box contains a List of a contained class Widget. A Widget needs to be able to specify relationships with other Widgets. I figured a good way to do this would be to do something like this: public abstract class Widget { public static class WidgetID { // implementation stolen from Google's GWT private static int nextHashCode; private final int index; public WidgetID() { index = ++nextHashCode; } public final int hashCode() { return index; } } public abstract WidgetID getWidgetID(); } so sublcasses of Widget could: public class BlueWidget extends Widget { public static final WidgetID WIDGETID = new WidgetID(); @Override public WidgetID getWidgetID() { return WIDGETID; } } Now, BlueWidget can do getBox().addWidgetRelationship(RelationshipTypes.SomeType, RedWidget.WIDGETID, and Box can iterate through it's list comparing the second parameter to iter.next().getWidgetID(). Now, all this works great so far. What I'm trying to do is keep from having to declare the public static final WidgetID WIDGETID in all the subclasses and implement it instead in the parent Widget class. The problem is, if I move that line of code into Widget, then every instance of a subclass of Widget appears to get the same static final WidgetID for their Subclassname.WIDGETID. However, making it non-static means I can no longer even call Subclassname.WIDGETID. So: how do I create a static WidgetID in the parent Widget class while ensuring it is different for every instance of Widget and subclasses of Widget? Or am I using the wrong tool for the job here?   I have a master page that divides the main content into two areas. There are two asp:ContentPlaceHolder controls in the body section of the master page with IDs cphMain and cphSideBar respectively. One of the corresponding content pages has a control in cphMain that needs to refer to a control in cphSideBar. Specifically, a SqlDataSource in cphMain references a TextBox in cphSideBar to use as a parameter in the select command. Then in the Page_Load() event handler the contents of the TextBox in cphSideBar is copied into the contents of the non-visible TextBox in cphMain. I get the results I want with the work around I've come up with, but it seems like such a hack. I was wondering if there is a better solution I'm missing. Please advise.

  I have a library of classes, all interrelated. Some files are inside the document root and some are outside using the <Directory> and Alias features in httpd.conf Assuming I have 3 files: webroot.php (Inside the document root) alias_directory.php (Inside a folder outside the doc root) alias_directory2.php (Inside a **different** folder outside the doc root) If alias_directory2.php needs both webroot.php and alias_directory.php, This does not work. (Remember alias_directory.php and alias_directory2.php are not in the same locations) require_once $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/webroot.php'; //(ok) require_once $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/alias_directory.php'; //(not ok) This does not work because alias_directory.php is not in the doc root. Similarly require_once $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/webroot.php'; //(ok) require_once dirname(__FILE__).'/alias_directory.php'; //(not ok) The problem here is that dirname(__FILE__) will return the path for alias_directory2.php not alias_directory.php. This works: require_once $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/webroot.php'; //(ok) require_once '/full/path/to/directory/alias_directory.php'; //(ok) But is very nasty and is a maintenance nightmare if I decide to move my library to another location. How do I solve this problem, is seems that I need a way to resolve an Alias folder properly.

  I have inherited a website that needs the password changed that accesses the database. I can see that there are two tables within the database but neither of them have username or password info. The previous web guy moved out of the country and can't be reached. I am not up-to-speed enough to figure this out. I have gone through all the files to try and find the answer but can't get it. It's hosted by goDaddy.com and I have changed the passwords there but it didn't change this login info. www.executivehomerents.com/cpanel <-this brings up the prompt for the username & password which I won't give out but the page only gives you 5 choices and none of them deal with changing the password.   Imagine you access your MySQL database via PDO. You got some functions, and in these functions, you need to access the database. The first thing I thought of is global, like: $db = new PDO('mysql:host=127.0.0.1;dbname=toto', 'root', 'pwd'); function some_function() { global $db; $db->query('...'); } But it's considered as a bad practice. So, after a little search, I ended up with the Singleton pattern, which "applies to situations in which there needs to be a single instance of a class." I have multiple computers and I always make sure that if I am working with production server, I never leave it open but when I am doing some experiment I often leave my computer open. My daughter loves the part when I have left the computer open and I am not observing her. Recently I had the same scenario, I got urgent call and I moved away from my computer and when I returned she was playing with SSMS left open my computer. Here is the screen which was visible on the screen. For a moment, I could not figure out what was this screen and what was about to get updated. I tried to ask her what keys she pressed the reaction was “I wanted – eya eya o”. Well, what more I expect from 3 years old. She is no computer genius – she just learned to use notepad and paint on my machine. Finally, when I saw the above screen in detail, I realize that this screen was from the help screen and something got updated. I have been using SQL Server for a long time but I never updated help on the screen. When I need to search something if I remember that I have written it earlier I will go to http://search.sqlauthority.com and will search there or will search on Google. As this computer was already updated I fired up Virtual Machine and tried to look recreate how my daughter was reached to above screen. Here are the steps which I have to do to reach to above screen. Go to SSMS >> Toolbar >> Help >> Manage Help Settings (or type CTRL+ALT+F1) and click it. Above click brought up following screen. I clicked on Check for update online brought following screen up. When I clicked on Update it brought me back to original screen which my daughter was able to bring up earlier. I found it so interesting that what took me 2-3 minutes to figure out and the screen which I have never come across in my career I learned from my curiosity like my daughter.   I need a little help with .htaccess file I have songs, singers and albums links I want to rewrite.
